There's an update to the opening titles today, as Ned (Ben Hall) is removed from the roster, prompting a fresh shot of just Zara and Amy at the marina.
The Vineyard
We pick up where we left off, with Paul gloating at Glen as Kiri looks confused by his claims.
KIRI: My - my *what*?!
GLEN (to Paul): Why would you do this?
Leo turns up, and asks what's going on.
PAUL (to Glen): I'll leave you to fill her in.
KIRI: Why would he make up something like this?
GLEN: He's not... I'm your dad.
Kiri doesn't know what to say, as Paul looks positively gleeful.
Harold's Café
Harlow is with Corey, and tells him she's deferred her uni course - adding that it 'feels right'. Nicolette comes in.
NICOLETTE: Hey, have you seen Paul?
HARLOW: Hi to you, too (!)
NICOLETTE: I mean, he's not answering his phone, and he's not in his office.
Harlow says she hasn't seen Paul, so Nicolette walks off, leaving a voicemail telling Paul to call her back 'now'. Harlow yawns.
COREY: Bored?
HARLOW: No. Weirdly exhausted.
COREY: Well, not that weird, considering everything that's been going on (...) Big emotional upheaval tends to sap the energy.
Harlow admits that the situation with Ned has got to her, as well as her fall-out with Terese. Corey tells Harlow that Terese will realise she was the one in the wrong. Harlow notices that Freya, who has popped in for a takeaway, is having trouble at the counter as her card has been declined. Harlow pays for Freya's order while she's settling her own bill. Freya is embarrassed, but grateful.
FREYA: Thank you. It's funny how quickly your money dries up when no-one wants to hire you.
Corey is listening to this with interest. Harlow offers to ask at the hotel to see if there are any vacancies in housekeeping. Freya thanks her again, saying that would be amazing. Meanwhile, Nicolette is in the kitchen, sending Paul an all-caps text message, demanding that he call her ASAP!
The Vineyard
Kiri walks back towards the courtyard; Glen and Leo follow, as does Paul a little further behind.
GLEN: I'm so sorry, Kiri. I never planned on you finding out like this. Or ever.
KIRI: No, it's not real.
GLEN: You need to speak to Barbara.
Kiri asks Leo if she can go home; he says yes, and offers to give her a lift. They head off, leaving Glen with Paul.
GLEN: How did you find out?
PAUL: Oh, I think you've got Nicolette to thank for that. Yeah, she managed to track down Karen who, you know, just happened to mention that you knew Kiri's parents.
GLEN: You...
PAUL: So all I had to do was just have a bit of a conversation with John Wong, and here we are.
GLEN (furious): Why tell her?! She's devastated!
PAUL: Hey - any pain that she is feeling right now is on you.
GLEN: I had no intention of telling her!
PAUL: No, of course you didn't. Telling the truth isn't really your style, is it? You know, maybe - just maybe - if you'd lied a little less, this wouldn't have happened.
GLEN: What are you talking about?!
PAUL: I know about you and Terese.
Glen loses his temper and grabs Paul by the collar.
GLEN (shouting): This is payback?!
PAUL: What, do you want to add an assault charge to your troubles too, do you?
Glen just about summons the restraint to let Paul go and walk away.
Lassiter's Complex
Nicolette is leaving Paul another impatient voicemail. Nearby, Kiri and Leo convene with Chloe, who's heard the news about Glen being Kiri's dad and can't get her head around it.
KIRI: I can't even get a hold of my mum to find out if it's true.
Leo tells Kiri he's sorry about Paul's behaviour, and goes inside to fetch her a drink. Chloe offers to get off work early and come home with Kiri. Kiri says it's fine, but then bursts into tears. Chloe comforts her.
KIRI: What if it's true - Glen has been lying to me this whole time and Dad's not actually my dad?
They hug - but Nicolette has seen this from a distance, and approaches them.
NICOLETTE: Sorry, I dunno if this is a really bad time, but I think there's something you need to know about Glen (...) I just spoke with his ex-wife, and I think he's somehow connected to you.
CHLOE: Did you tell Paul any of this?
NICOLETTE: ... I thought he could help.
CHLOE: Even if that's true, which I doubt, he just did the absolute opposite.
KIRI: (...) He just told me Glen's my father.
Nicolette is shocked, having not joined the dots.
No 22
Harlow has come to see Terese, who awkwardly acknowledges her. Harlow promises she didn't know about Montana's finances, and that she had nothing to do with Amy's van being vandalised.
HARLOW: I just hate the tension between us.
TERESE: ... I'll make us a cup of tea. Look, I'm so sorry that things got heated between us. I should never have accused you the way I did.
HARLOW: No, this whole situation was a huge mess.
TERESE: Are you alright?
HARLOW: Not really, actually.
But at this point, Glen comes in, repeating, 'She knows!' Sensing something is seriously wrong, Harlow says her conversation with Terese can wait, and Terese promises they can catch up soon. Harlow leaves, but seems a bit put out that her chat with Terese has been cut short, despite Terese's assurances that she'll be in touch. With Harlow gone, Terese asks Glen what happened.
No 24
Freya comes to talk to Kiri and Chloe in the sunroom; she says she's heading to her room to chill, but offers a friendly ear at any time if Kiri needs it. Once Freya's gone, Chloe suggests that Kiri should get some rest too, but Kiri is too anxious waiting for her mum to reply to her messages and answer her questions.
KIRI: My list of questions just keeps growing. Was Glen a sperm donor? I know that Mum and Dad struggled to get pregnant with me. Does that mean that Dad knows? He must, right? There's no way that Mum would've kept this from him. And she definitely wouldn't have an affair.
CHLOE: Try not to get too far ahead of yourself.
KIRI: But if he's a sperm donor, that means that Mum and Dad kept this from me. They lied to me. My family doesn't do that. My parents raised me to always be honest - that integrity was everything. I just... I just don't know how to deal with this.
CHLOE: You won't have to do it alone. I will be here every step of the way.
Kiri's phone rings; it's Barbara. Kiri asks her outright if Glen Donnelly is her father...
No 22
Terese and Glen are having a cuppa. Terese says Paul has really outdone himself this time, and Glen explains that Paul told Kiri for revenge, because he thinks Glen and Terese are together. Aghast at how petty Paul is being, Terese asks how Kiri is.
GLEN: Shocked. Confused. I really want to check in on her, make sure she's okay.
TERESE: Oh, I...
GLEN: Not a good idea?
TERESE: I just think, if she's as overwhelmed as you say she is, it might be best just to leave it. Maybe till tomorrow?
Glen looks anxious.
The Waterhole
Harlow and Corey are having a drink at the pub, but Harlow is glued to her phone.
COREY: Do I need to start putting a limit on your screen time, young lady?
HARLOW: Sorry.
COREY: No, it's fine. My ego loves competing with an inanimate object.
HARLOW: I just thought Terese would've texted me by now.
COREY: To apologise for throwing you out of the house when you were there to clear the air?
HARLOW: She didn't throw me out. Glen looked like he was having a really tough time.
COREY: Yeah, but so are you. But Glen seemed to take priority, which is a bit weird (...) You know what? I'll shut up - you're clearly just a nicer person than I am.
HARLOW: What do you mean?
COREY: Well, it's just, if I was Terese, and you came to me saying that you were having a hard time, I would have got back to you ASAP.
Harlow heads to the bathroom, promising Corey will have her full attention when she returns. But while she's gone, her phone chimes. Corey picks it up, entering Harlow's passcode, and finds that the new message is from Terese, apologising and suggesting they catch up tomorrow morning. Corey deletes the message, then puts the phone down again.
No 32
David, Aaron, Nicolette and Jane are digesting dinner, and the news that Kiri is David's cousin!
NICOLETTE: Oh, nothing says 'welcome to the family' like dropping an insane truth bomb with no context whatsoever!
Aaron feels bad for Kiri, saying Paul was insensitive even by his standards.
NICOLETTE: That's putting it mildly. If I'd have known he was gonna use the information like that -
JANE (annoyed): Well, have you not *met* Paul? It didn't stop you from working with him - honestly, Nicolette!
NICOLETTE: Okay, settle, okay? It was a one-time thing, and Paul's the one who's created this big mess, and he's upset Kiri, and - you know what, he can ignore my calls all he wants, but when I get in contact with him, he's gonna wish he didn't cross me.
David in particular has been looking quietly unimpressed with Nicolette throughout this speech, but shrewdly holds his tongue. Isla starts crying over the baby monitor, and David and Aaron are relieved for an excuse to leave the room.
NICOLETTE: I'm gonna get the blame for this, aren't I?
JANE: Well, you are just as much to blame as he is.
NICOLETTE: Mum, I would never have thrown Kiri under the bus like that.
JANE: Well, Paul wouldn't have found out about it if you hadn't been obsessed with digging around about Glen in the first place.
NICOLETTE: Uh, excuse me, but you started enjoying the intrigue as well, Mum.
JANE: ... Well, yes, but you crossed a line by involving Paul. So there's no point in acting like he is the only bad guy around here (...)
NICOLETTE: Mum, I never meant to hurt Kiri.
JANE: By making a deal with the devil, that is precisely what you've done.
The Waterhole
Harlow is struggling not to check her phone to see if there's been a message from Terese, so Corey gives her permission. Harlow admits she's already had a look, and says Terese still hasn't come back to her.
HARLOW: Maybe you're right. About me not being a priority.
COREY: I'm sorry.
Paul comes over to greet them, but finds Harlow in a downbeat mood after her stressful day. Paul heads to the bar and Corey goes too, for another round of drinks. Paul asks Corey if Harlow is taking Ned's departure hard.
COREY: She'll be okay. Don't worry, I promise to keep a close eye on her for you.
PAUL: Good man, thanks.
Corey glances back intently towards Harlow...
The Penthouse
Nicolette is pacing around the living area, while David is with Leo and Abigail on the balcony.
DAVID: Should we be worried about her?
LEO: I dunno, but whatever she's got to say, he's got it coming.
DAVID: Dad messed up someone else's life again for his own gain, but Nicolette had a hand in it too.
LEO: Well, whatever it is, it's gonna affect my business as well, so...
DAVID: Do you think Kiri and Glen will be comfortable working with each other again?
LEO: I dunno.
Paul comes into the living area.
NICOLETTE: You are out of control.
PAUL: Oh, good morning to you too, Nicolette (!)
NICOLETTE: I can't believe you would do that to Kiri before talking to me first!
PAUL: Us chit-chatting wasn't gonna change anything.
NICOLETTE: Of course it would've - I would've stopped you!
PAUL: Oh, and who was it that wanted me to go after Glen, then, hey? There was always going to be fallout.
NICOLETTE: No, you took it too far - again.
PAUL: But you were the one who drove all the way out to Mallacoota (...) You wanted to bring Glen down just as much as I did, and the only reason you got upset is because Kiri got caught in the crossfire.
Leo and David enter from the balcony.
LEO: Kiri sobbed the whole way home from the vineyard, Dad. You completely tore her apart - your own niece.
DAVID: Yeah, you talk about the importance of family, but it only seems to count when it suits you.
PAUL: Finding out the truth about who her father is is gonna be better for Kiri in the long run, isn't it?
DAVID: Don't try to spin this as if it's altruism!
PAUL: Well, it was good for the three of us.
DAVID: That was a completely different situation. We were looking for you.
LEO: Yeah, and Kiri had a completely happy family life. You pulled the rug out from under her just to hurt Glen.
Paul doesn't have a response to that, and turns to find Nicolette glaring at him.
PAUL (to Nicolette): Just... shut up, alright?
Terese comes up in the lift, and asks everyone to leave Paul and her alone to talk. They file out, as Terese glares angrily at Paul.
Harold's Café
Harlow and Corey come in for breakfast, to avoid the current 'vibe' at the penthouse. David comes in, and invites Harlow over to No 32 for dinner tonight, so they can discuss the family situation. Harlow is keen, saying she's free tonight, but at this point Corey intervenes.
COREY: Actually, umm... I bought tickets for a play tonight in the city for us. It was supposed to be a surprise to help cheer you up.
HARLOW: Oh, sorry.
COREY: No, no, it's fine. Family's more important. I'll see if I can get a refund, or... whether anyone wants to come at late notice...
There's an awkward silence, until David volunteers that they should line up a different night for dinner instead. Harlow agrees. David asks what the play is, which almost catches Corey off-guard.
COREY: Ah, now, I couldn't say that - that would ruin the surprise. Although it's the first of many that we're going to get to see, now that you're deferring uni.
DAVID: You're deferring uni?
HARLOW: ...
COREY: Yeah. Yeah, it's a big decision, but it's the end of semester, timing's right.
HARLOW: Yeah. It's been a tough year, so I do think I need to.
David looks concerned, but doesn't say anymore - just tells them to enjoy the play. The moment David's gone, Harlow worries David's annoyed, and thinks she should maybe go to dinner. But Corey immediately makes David out to be the one whose behaviour is out of order, saying he should be happy that Harlow has plans.
HARLOW: Yeah. Yeah, you'd think so...
The Penthouse
Terese is giving Paul a serve, saying Glen and Kiri did not deserve what he did to them.
PAUL: Glen deserves everything he gets.
TERESE: Oh, what, because you think that he broke his promise to you? I know about the horrible pact that you made him agree to. And for your information, he's honoured it. Him and I aren't together.
PAUL: Ha. I'm not blind, Terese.
TERESE: Oh, I'll admit, we had a few moments. But he put a stop to them, out of respect for you. And he's also been planning on leaving town, because he didn't want to risk Kiri finding out the truth.
PAUL: Good riddance, I say.
Terese sits next to Paul.
TERESE: You know, you're not as smart as you think you are. Now that Kiri's been told, there's really no reason for Glen to leave. Now, any sort of loyalty that he once had towards you has completely gone. So, whatever you were hoping to achieve has backfired. You've crushed your niece, and you've ruined any chance you had of having a decent relationship with your brother. So, well done.
Paul doesn't look so smug now.
Ramsay Street
Glen is putting the bin out when he sees Nicolette passing.
GLEN: You've got a nerve.
NICOLETTE: Not now.
GLEN: For someone who claims to care so much about Kiri, to do that to her!
NICOLETTE: Well, that's rich, coming from you! You're the one who's been obsessing over her since day one, lying this whole time!
GLEN: Whatever I did was to protect her.
NICOLETTE: So why did you tell her about me? You know, it makes a lot more sense now - you didn't want her to stay in town, because then she'd find out about you! We could've had something real, and you killed it.
GLEN: I didn't tell her about the things you did to protect me! I did it to protect her!
NICOLETTE: Are you serious?!
GLEN: Kiri's kind and good-hearted. You're mean and spiteful. You're the last person I'd want my daughter to end up with.
Rattled by this, Nicolette walks away. Kiri then approaches, and Glen asks if they can talk.
KIRI (keeps on walking): I want to talk to my *actual* parents. My mum's on her way.
GLEN: Okay, well, whenever you're ready.
KIRI: I don't want to *be* ready! You managed to stay out of my life for 25 years, and I was happy. Why couldn't you keep it that way?! I wish we'd never met.
Glen looks upset as Kiri walks off.
Harold's Café
Corey is using reverse psychology on Harlow to ensure she spends the evening with him, rather than David. She says she'll catch up with David another time, but admits she's annoyed about Paul's latest scheme.
COREY: Well, don't worry, because that play tonight will take that crazy family out of your head.
He's still not giving her any clues as to what the play is, though, presumably because he still hasn't booked one yet! They get up to leave, just as Freya comes in, and notices Harlow has left her cardigan on the chair. Harlow thanks Freya, saying she's 'all over the shop at the moment'. Freya asks if Harlow's had a chance to ask housekeeping about whether there's a job going; Harlow's forgotten, but Freya tells her not to worry about it.
HARLOW: Have you found another job?
FREYA: I wish. I, umm... I just don't feel that comfortable working for your grandfather, after what he did to Kiri. No offence.
HARLOW: No, no, I totally get it. Good luck with the job hunt.
Corey seems intrigued by Freya, and once she's gone, asks Harlow what her 'story' is. Harlow explains Freya was the one who was with David at the incident with Gareth at River Bend.
COREY: The nurse?
HARLOW: Former nurse now, I guess. She's had a tough time.
Corey looks even more curious.
No 22
In the garden, Glen sits down at the table with a bottle of Leo's gin, and stares at it, deeply conflicted. He takes out the stopper, and pours a very large measure. Trembling, he lifts the glass...
