Sheila 1 is rallying the troops in preparation for the arrival for lunch of her guest of honour, Sheila 2.
SHEILA 1: Now, which one of these says 'salad fork' to you?
She rants to Levi and a still-hungover Bea about how they must impress Sheila 2, who she knows (from having stolen her Daintree parcels) likes 'the finer things of life'. Levi suggests that he and Bea go out for lunch so as not to cramp Sheila 1's style, and Bea is extremely keen. But...
SHEILA 1: Don't even think about it. I am already one Canning down with Kyle sleeping off his big night. Now, I need you here to keep the conversation flowing, because it's supposed to be a family lunch. Please?
LEVI (wearily): I'll get the china.
Sheila 1 tells Bea to go to Harold's to get two kinds of mineral water, declaring that 'teamwork makes the dream work'. Bea reluctantly departs.
No 22
Yashvi is still hungover, too, and dozing in the sunroom. Ned wakes her and tells her he's heading off on his art gallery jaunt alone; he was going to stay and keep her company, but all she's done is sleep. Yashvi apologises and tells him to enjoy it; however, an alarm goes off on her phone, reminding her she's supposed to be looking after Harold's while Nicolette is off work.
Yashvi thinks about asking Chloe to step in, but Ned suggests Nicolette probably needs Chloe more than Harold's does right now.
YASHVI: Yeah, but I can't do it! I have no brain power! I can't even smell food right now.
Visibly a little weary of Yashvi's self-pity, Ned nonetheless tells Yashvi to rest up, and he'll cover for her at Harold's.
YASHVI: Really? Thank you so much, you're the best! Thank you!
NED: You owe me.
As Ned leaves, Yashvi puts back on her hangover sunglasses, and goes back to sleep.
Ramsay Street
As Ned leaves No 22, he and Hendrix, who is playing with a basketball in the street, nod in greeting to one another. Chloe approaches Hendrix, who asks her if she's at a loose end and wants to play video games with him.
CHLOE: You must be bored out of your mind if I'm the best option you've got on your school holidays.
HENDRIX: Nah, you're totally my first pick... Okay, you got me. Mackenzie's busy, and I don't really have any other friends - that I want to see.
Chloe says she can spare an hour before getting back to Nicolette. Toadie appears, weighed down with paperwork, and Chloe opens his car door for him as he has no hands free. He explains all the papers are for a big new case he's taken on, which involves a stack of background work.
CHLOE: Sounds intriguing.
TOADIE: And complicated, especially now there's press involved. Have you heard of the Carmello case?
CHLOE: Dang, that *is* big!
Chloe explains to Hendrix that Mr Carmello is a CEO who has been in the public limelight for giving bonuses and gifts to one of his executives, and then it turned out they were having an affair; now he's being sued for misusing funds.
Toadie explains he has to meet Carmello in 15 minutes. When Hendrix asks why he's not wearing a tie, Toadie explains he can't find one and has no time to look; he's had to pull in Melanie to help with the case, which means Mackenzie's been left to pack and move the entire law office on her own (from the hotel suite they've been using back to the original office in the Lassiter's Complex, where presumably the engineering work that's been going on for months is now complete).
HENDRIX (over-eager): Well, I can help?
TOADIE: Really? I can't pay ya.
HENDRIX: I'm happy to volunteer. I'll call Mack.
Toadie thanks Hendrix, and gets into his car.
Harold's Café
Bea is picking up the mineral water for the Canning lunch, and has run into Karl, who isn't helping her hangover by running through his latest ideas for the Finn Kelly podcast. As Karl leaves much to Bea's relief, Sheila 2 comes in, and Ned appears from the kitchen in an apron.
Bea and Sheila 2 are both surprised Ned is working here; he explains he's just covering for hungover Yashvi. Sheila 2 praises Ned as 'one of the good ones'. Bea introduces herself to Sheila 2; they've only seen one another in passing at the Hive, but Bea explains that she will be at the Canning lunch, too. Sheila 2 explains that's why she's here, to pick up dessert to take along.
Ned offers Sheila 2 a look at the menu, but she claims she's a 'decisive lady', having already picked. Bea again looks a little suspicious of the rapport between Ned and Sheila 2.
Lassiter's
Mackenzie is packing up boxes of files to shift back to the original law offices, when Hendrix arrives to help. The banter begins immediately, as he makes it clear she owes him for his help.
MACKENZIE: Sorry - me owe *you*? Remind me, who was the one who saved you from the spider last week?
HENDRIX: Uh, Bea Nilsson and an oven mitt. After you left it full rein of the house and my nightmares.
MACKENZIE: What's that on your shoulder?
HENDRIX: You're evil. Okay?
MACKENZIE: I can't help it. It is too easy with you!
Mackenzie instructs Hendrix on which boxes to move, and tells him his sourdough bread went down well with Harlow. She explains that Harlow's going to be staying with them a while longer, as she's furious with Paul. Mackenzie finds a tie in the top drawer of the filing cabinet, remarking that it's a weird place for it to be.
HENDRIX: Oh, Toadie was looking for that! He really needs to work on his filing system, doesn't he?
MACKENZIE: Big time.
HENDRIX: What else is in there?
MACKENZIE: A spider.
HENDRIX: Don't.
No 26
Bea is resting up on the couch, when Levi appears in a suit jacket Sheila 1 has presumably made him put on for lunch. They talk briefly about Karl's meddling in the podcast. Levi reassures her that she can just ignore all Karl's ideas!
Sheila 1 emerges from the bedroom, wearing a dress and a hideous fur neckpiece. Deciding that Bea doesn't look suitably smart, Sheila 1 donates the neckpiece to her, saying she doesn't have time to go and get changed. Levi jokes that he should polish the taps in the kitchen in preparation; Sheila 1 tells him this is a good idea!
In the kitchen, Levi moans that none of the food looks keto. Sheila tells him it's not for his benefit, and not to breathe on the hors d'oeuvres. There's a knock at the door.
SHEILA 1: Stand here near the door, to receive our guest of honour!
Sheila 1 puts on her best sophisticated hostess impersonation as she welcomes in Sheila 2, declaring that the dessert she's brought will 'go really nicely with the salmon roe'.
SHEILA 2: I'm sorry. I didn't know this event had a formal dress code.
SHEILA 1: Oh, no - this old rag? It's just the first thing I saw on the bedroom floor this morning!
Bea and Levi look bemused as the Sheilas head into the kitchen.
Harold's Café
Karl bores Ned with his thoughts about the Finn Kelly podcast, explaining he's ruminating on what kind of voice to use and testing out some options on Ned! Karl gets a text from Kyle, saying he's asked him to help out at the tram as he's feeling unwell; Ned guesses Kyle is in hangover mode, too, but doesn't say so. Karl goes to ring Bea, to let her know he won't be able to help with the podcast after lunch.
Yashvi turns up; she's feeling much better after her nap and has come to thank Ned for dropping his art gallery plans to stand in for her here. She apologises for not being 'my best self' this morning; to make it up to him, she's got them tickets to the National Gallery of Victoria.
YASHVI: I was a brat before, and I wanted to make it up to you.
NED: Nah, you weren't a... well, you *were* a brat, but this is very thoughtful, so, thank you.
They hug.
Lassiter's
In the law office, Hendrix is lugging heavy boxes around and ostensibly working up a sweat, so takes off his shirt. Mackenzie doesn't know where to look, and Hendrix clocks her discomfort and apologises - but Mackenzie says it's nothing.
Chloe turns up to see how they're getting on, and Mackenzie takes one of the boxes downstairs, leaving Chloe to query why Hendrix is only in a vest.
CHLOE: Looks like two tickets to the gun show!
HENDRIX: I got hot.
CHLOE: Last week you said you weren't into Mackenzie.
HENDRIX: Yeah. Nothing's changed.
CHLOE: So you're not showing off for her. Not even a tiny little bit?
Hendrix insists they're just mates, and that Mackenzie is still talking to Jay Rebecchi long-distance. But Chloe is sceptical.
CHLOE: You guys almost kissed, and now you're helping her with manual labour, so...
HENDRIX: Yeah, because I had nothing better to do!
CHLOE: Alright, I get it. Just make sure you're not sending her mixed signals. If you're only interested in being friends with Mackenzie, make that message nice and clear.
No 26
Levi, Bea and Sheilas 1 and 2 are seated around the dining table, enjoying their mineral water, and making slightly awkward polite conversation, as Levi continues to wonder whether the food is keto. Sheila 1 brings out the main course - a lobster.
SHEILA 2: Actually, I'm a vegetarian.
SHEILA 1 (horrified): Oh! I should've asked. Oh, what was I thinking? Don't worry, I can make more salad!
SHEILA 2: No, wait, wait - I'm sorry, I was just joking. I'm just trying to lighten the mood.
They all laugh, relieved, as Sheila 2 declares lobster her favourite thing in the world. Clearly feeling things are a little formal, she suggests they just get their hands dirty, and crack it open. Bea agrees, relieved, and asks Sheila to pass the salad, leading both Sheilas to reach for it, and more laughter.
Lassiter's
Mackenzie and Hendrix have now moved most of the boxes out into the corridor, and Hendrix has his shirt back on - but now the door has jammed, so they can't get back in to bring out the last lot. Hendrix tells Mackenzie he has something to tell her; he's just spoken to Jay on the phone.
MACKENZIE: Is he okay? I haven't spoken to him in, like, a week. He seemed a little bit off.
HENDRIX: Uh, yeah, he's okay. He's alright. I was gonna invite him down for a day, before school goes back. But he told me about this girl - Casey?
MACKENZIE: Who's Casey?
HENDRIX: ... She's going out with him.
MACKENZIE (laughs): No! Jay wouldn't go out with someone and not mention it.
HENDRIX: ... Sorry you had to hear it from me.
Mackenzie's mood turns.
MACKENZIE: Is this your idea of some sort of sick joke? I bruised your ego by just wanting to be friends, and then you go and do this? Unbelievable.
Very upset, Mackenzie storms off, leaving Hendrix lost for words.
No 26
Conversation has now fully loosened up around the table, as Sheila tells a story about Levi shoving a serviette up his nose as a nine-year-old, and getting it stuck and having to go to the emergency room.
Sheila 2 says she had a few ER trips herself when she was younger, due to surfing accidents, leading Sheila 1 to ask where she grew up. Sheila 2 says she was born in 'Boorlo, in Whadjuk Nyungar Boodja' - Boorlo being the Aboriginal Nyungar peoples' word for Perth. (The Whadjuk are one of several specific groups of people within Nyungar Boodja, meaning 'Nyungar Country' in south-western Australia.)
Levi reveals Bea grew up in Western Australia too, and Bea and Sheila 2 both laugh about how bad the beaches are on the east coast in comparison. Sheila 1 asks if Sheila 2 can teach them some of the Nyungar language.
LEVI: Yes, and you've got to teach me all the swear words.
Sheila 2 says she'd love to share her 'kaartdijin' (knowledge) of the Nyungar language, but says she needs to speak to one of the Elders of Wurundjeri Country in which Erinsborough falls, as per Aboriginal culture, to ask for permission.
SHEILA 2: Even though I speak Nyungar, I acknowledge this is Wurundjeri Country who speak Woiwurrung. And because I'm not from this particular country, then I need to ask for permission to teach you mob my language, from a Wurundjeri Elder. It's a sign of respect.
LEVI: That's pretty cool. I didn't know that.
Sheila 2 gets a text from someone called Sara, saying, 'I have the info'. Bea asks how her art classes with Ned have been going. Sheila 2 says she's been having a lot of fun, and that Ned is a fantastic artist and a good teacher. Bea mentions she's a mechanic, and Sheila 2 replies that her hire car has been making strange noises. Bea tells her to bring it in for a service tomorrow.
Harold's Café
Kyle is sitting at a table alone, still hungover, when Karl approaches. Unimpressed to see Kyle out and about, Karl remarks that Kyle didn't say what his illness was in his text, and gives him a telling-off for making him cancel his 'very important' appointments to run the tram in his place. Kyle guiltily says it won't happen again.
Yashvi, who is now working alongside Ned, takes a phone call - it's the police, wanting her to work a shift tonight. She tells Ned this means she won't be able to go with him to the gallery tonight after all, and suggests he take someone else.
YASHVI: Karl likes art.
NED (unenthused): Yeah...
But at this point, Ned spots that Sheila 2 has come in, and suggests it might be a good networking opportunity with his potential new boss if he asked her to come with him instead. Yashvi thinks this is a good idea, and Ned introduces her to Sheila 2.
SHEILA 2: So nice to meet you! He's always talking about you.
Yashvi says it's great to finally meet the Sheila Canning 'who isn't Levi's gran' and rushes off to get ready for her police shift. Ned offers Sheila 2 the spare ticket to the gallery, and she says she'd love to join him. Karl listens in jealously, and Sheila 2 is weirded out by his lingering!
The Waterhole
Toadie catches up with Mackenzie and thanks her for all her hard work shifting the files between the two offices. She mentions about the jammed door and he looks a bit shifty, saying he's fixed it now. Mackenzie points out that Toadie is wearing a tie that's on backwards. He fiddles with it, embarrassed.
Toadie wants to brief Mackenzie about the Carmello case, but quickly discerns that she is preoccupied with other thoughts. He offers her an ear, and she explains she's just spoken to Jay on the phone, who's confirmed that he's seeing someone in Sydney.
TOADIE: Is that a bad thing?
MACKENZIE: Yeah. Well, no... Yeah.
TOADIE: Was there something going on between you two?
MACKENZIE: Nothing official. We never said that we'd be together, but... I had this idea that we both thought it would happen one day. But I know I shouldn't be sad for something I never had.
TOADIE: Well, the heart is a funny thing. Sometimes you've just got to be grateful for what's in front of you. Like great friends (...) It was really good of Hendrix to help you out today.
MACKENZIE: Yeah. I think I might've been a bit unfair on him today...
Fitzgerald Motors
The following morning, Sheila 2 has brought her car to the garage, where Bea is inspecting it as agreed. Identifying the problem, she says it will take about an hour to fix. Levi and Yashvi turn up. Yashvi asks Sheila 2 how the art gallery was; Sheila 2 says some of it was breathtaking, and Yashvi reports that Ned felt the same.
SHEILA 2: He was so much fun. Honestly, it was like watching a kid in a candy store.
Sheila 2 rushes off for a meeting, and a mildly suspicious Bea remarks that Sheila 2 seems to be spending a lot of time with Ned.
YASHVI: Yeah. It's nice.
BEA: Is it? I mean, I'm just a bit worried that she's so keen to spend time with him.
YASHVI: Yeah. But they have similar interests, like art. And I think she's gonna become his boss soon, so...
But Bea doesn't look like her suspicions have been quelled. Levi and Yashvi head off on their patrol, and Bea gets into Sheila 2's car. But she's shocked to find a file on the seat with the words 'Ned Willis' on the front.
The Flamingo Bar
Hendrix is chatting to Chloe about Mackenzie becoming upset with him yesterday. He says she had a right to know Jay was seeing someone, but she took it the wrong way.
CHLOE: Mackenzie would've been in shock. Once she calms down, she'll realise you really wanted it to work with her and Jay.
HENDRIX: Mm. Except there was part of me that... was kind of relieved that Jay had moved on. Like, I was almost glad. That's weird, isn't it?
CHLOE: I hate to keep banging on about this, but it might mean you like Mackenzie.
HENDRIX: That's not it.
CHLOE: Are you sure? What does your gut tell you?
HENDRIX: I'm not into Mackenzie. I'm worried about her.
CHLOE: How so?
HENDRIX: Well, if her and Jay were to get together, it would be long-distance. And that's really hard. That would suck. So, I guess I am just relieved that she doesn't have to go through that.
CHLOE: Yeah. That explains it.
HENDRIX: Yeah. I just want her to be happy, you know?
Chloe smiles, and looks convinced there's more to it.
Fitzgerald Motors
Sheilas 1 and 2 are chatting as they walk towards the garage. Bea sees them coming, and takes the opportunity to pick up the 'Ned Willis' file from the front seat of the car.
SHEILA 2: Oh, I spoke to Aunty, who's one of the senior Elders for Wurundjeri Woiwurrung Country, and she's given me permission to teach you mob my Nyungar kaartdijin.
SHEILA 1: Oh, that is great - the kids are gonna love it! So, how do I say 'goodbye' in Nyungar?
SHEILA 2: So, we don't have a word for 'goodbye'. We say, 'Noonook boorda djinang,' which means, 'See you soon'.
While Sheila 1 tries to say the Nyungar words, Bea hesitates, then gets out of the car, still holding the file...
