Exhibition venue
Terese, Paul and Roxy have arrived at the factory space that Ned is using to host his exhibition. The theme of the exhibition is, of course, residents of Ramsay Street past and present - because, what else!
Paul starts rifling through some of the packaged-up paintings, hoping to get a preview of Ned's portrait of him - but at this point, a rattled-looking Ned comes in. He claims he's been out to fetch some double-sided tape, but that the shop was sold out. Changing the subject, he asks them to help put up the various portraits on the walls. Paul soon goes back to looking for his own!
Ramsay Street
Levi encounters Bea dressed up to attend Ned's exhibition, and remarks that she looks great. Levi tells Bea about Yashvi's run-in with Scarlett at the hospital today.
LEVI: Yashvi can't afford to be throwing her weight around when she's on the job.
They part ways, and Bea rendezvouses with Yashvi outside No 30, so they can head to the exhibition together.
YASHVI: Let's get this over and done with.
Bea mentions that Levi just told her about the run-in with Scarlett, and that he's worried about her. Yashvi says she's fine. Bea tells her that if she wants to bail once they've made an appearance at the exhibition, then they can.
No 30
Dipi asks Shane which of two costumes she should wear to the exhibition.
SHANE: You look great in both. Or neither.
DIPI: Well, that's not helpful. Just pick one and put me out of my misery!
Shane obliges, and Dipi tells him to get his skates on, or they'll be late. But Shane's feeling like he'll give it a miss.
DIPI: Puff, we need to support Ned.
SHANE: I'm just not feeling great. The thought of standing around with all those people making small talk - I can't do it. I don't know what it is.
DIPI: Okay. Well, is there anything I can do?
SHANE: No, no - I'll just lay low, get my head straight.
DIPI: Well, I'm staying with you.
SHANE: No, no, don't be silly. I'll just take a nap. You should give Pierce and Chloe a buzz - tag along with them, so you don't have to rock up alone.
Dipi is hesitant, but Shane encourages her to go, or she'll be late
Exhibition venue
Paul is hanging up a portrait of Karl and Susan!
PAUL: That look straight to you? Not that I really care with these two.
Terese unwraps another portrait - the one of Paul! He's depicted with rather an egotistical smirk, and Terese stands in front of it to hide it, knowing Paul will hate it. Sure enough, when he sees it, he does!
PAUL: You've got to be kidding.
TERESE: Oh, come on! It's not that bad.
PAUL: No, it's a lot worse! There is no way that that thing is going up.
TERESE: Paul, you can't take this out of the exhibition!
PAUL: Oh, really? So you don't have a problem with people seeing me looking like that?
TERESE: ... You know, it's quite powerful, actually, now that I'm looking at it. And, look, darling, it's the most interesting painting here. It'll be the talk of the town!
Roxy is hanging another painting, and Ned is getting stressed. Roxy wants to know why he's so tense - he says he's just nervous about the exhibition.
NED: Yashvi's gonna see her portrait for the first time, and I just... I really want her to love it.
ROXY: Breathe, my friend. She will love it.
NED: I hope so, cos I really think this is my last chance.
Ned says he has to go home and get changed, so Roxy tells him they'll finish hanging the rest of the portraits for him. She encourages him to think 'calm thoughts'.
No 24
Chloe and Pierce are both dressed up ready to head out to the exhibition. Hendrix announces he isn't coming with them after all - he's got a Skype lined up with Harlow.
HENDRIX: Sorry. Love trumps art.
Chloe compliments Pierce's suit.
CHLOE: Have I told you how much I love you in this colour?
PIERCE (weary): Yeah. Every time I wear it.
Chloe looks awkward, and Pierce looks pleased to receive a phone call from Dipi, asking if she can tag along with them. Pierce says that of course she can, and only then thinks to check it's okay with Chloe - which of course, Chloe says it is. But she looks slightly disappointed, perhaps having hoped to have Pierce to herself.
Exhibition venue
A montage of excited punters admiring Ned's artwork ensues, including portraits of Harold Bishop and Bouncer the dog! Yashvi and Bea admire the portrait of Karl and Susan.
BEA: I know Ned's been an idiot lately.
YASHVI: Understatement.
BEA: But he is one talented idiot. Like, really talented.
YASHVI: I know!
Levi turns up. Bea queries whether he's even into art, but he says he's here to support Ned and Yashvi.
YASHVI: You even ironed your shirt! I'm touched.
Nearby, Ned is excited that Yashvi has turned up, telling Roxy that she wouldn't have come if she wasn't still interested.
Meanwhile, Bea is looking at Paul's portrait.
BEA: Whoa, wow, that's...
Paul turns up alongside her.
BEA: ... that's interesting!
PAUL: Oh, come on, you don't have to pretend with me.
BEA: No, honestly, it's, umm... it's evocative, it's... I think Roxy needs to speak to me. Sorry.
Bea makes a hasty retreat!
Meanwhile, Ned is showing Yashvi one of his earlier pieces.
NED: But I included it because... it shows my journey. Blah-blah-blah.
YASHVI: It's amazing. Everything's amazing.
She sees one canvas that's still covered over, and asks if it's her portrait. He confirms it is.
YASHVI: Well, I'm guessing it's covered so you don't have people running from the building, screaming?
NED: Or because it's the highlight of the whole exhibition.
YASHVI: I might need that drink!
NED: Hey, you don't need to be nervous. That's my job!
YASHVI: Well, I'm glad that you didn't let Scarlett get in your head. Cos this show is the best revenge.
But Ned is still looking nervous.
The Waterhole
Dipi meets Chloe and Pierce in the pub for pre-exhibition drinks. Dipi and Chloe compliment one another on their outfits.
CHLOE: Doesn't she look amazing?
PIERCE (coughs): Uh, yeah.
While Pierce gets some drinks, Chloe asks after Shane. Dipi explains he's just not ready for crowds - it's still early days following his recovery. As Pierce rejoins them, Chloe gets a message, and announces that she has to go into work to arrange a replacement duty manager, as someone's called in sick.
Pierce offers to help, but Chloe tells him to stay and have a drink - she'll catch up with them again at the gallery. Pierce and Dipi look awkward as she goes.
Exhibition venue
Levi is looking at Ned's portrait of Bea, and takes a picture of it. She catches him in the act, and he claims the camera must've gone off accidentally while he was texting! She offers to get him a drink, but he says he's okay.
We briefly see a portrait of Lou Carpenter, as the camera pans across to where Paul is still looking at his own portrait, with Ned and Yashvi.
PAUL: It's not exactly flattering, is it?
NED: I wasn't trying to flatter you. Yes, I could've made you look younger and prettier, but that's not you.
PAUL: Thanks a lot!
NED: You've lived a hell of a life, Paul. I was trying to capture that. Plus, I figured you out of everyone wouldn't need your ego stroked. You know who you are, and you've made peace with it.
On hearing this, Paul takes a second look, and seems more positive about it.
PAUL: Yeah, I mean, I've got to admit, it is a fairly compelling image, isn't it?
NED: Exactly. I didn't want it to be comfortable; I wanted it to challenge people.
PAUL: I can see that.
Yashvi moves over to join Terese, who is chatting to an art critic, Andrew Shannon.
YASHVI: Andrew Shannon, as in the judge for the Osborne Prize?
ANDREW: I am. Nice to meet you.
YASHVI: What do you think of the exhibition?
ANDREW: Well, Mr Willis has made a very... confident debut.
YASHVI: Well, I'm so glad you like it, cos this means so much to him.
ANDREW: Would I be correct in guessing you are his muse?
YASHVI: Uh, yep, that would be me.
ANDREW: Well, I'm looking forward to the unveiling.
Andrew drifts away.
YASHVI: A confident debut? Is that art-speak for 'this is awesome'?
TERESE: I think he's very impressed!
Meanwhile, Ned is still talking to Paul about his portrait.
NED: I took a lot of inspiration from your grandmother's portrait of Mrs Mangel (...) I know it was controversial back in the day, but it's a really strong piece.
Yashvi listens to them, smiling.
The Waterhole
Dipi is impressed with Pierce's choice of wine, and they take a seat together. He remarks on Shane's absence, and Dipi says recovery is sometimes a case of two steps forward, and one back.
PIERCE: So just a bad day, then?
DIPI (nods): Yesterday was good. We even...
She's about to share the news that they slept together, but realises what she's saying and stops herself.
DIPI: Just for a little while there, I thought things were back on track.
PIERCE: Well, I guess that's a good sign.
DIPI: I just want things to be the way they used to be, you know? At the moment, everything feels like work. We're both on our best behaviour all the time, thinking twice about what we say. Nothing's easy... But like I said, it's a process. A couple of months from now, this'll all be a bad memory.
PIERCE: Don't do that, alright? Don't step away.
DIPI: I'm not.
PIERCE: You are. What Shane did... you have every right to feel the way you do. I don't think I'd be so forgiving if I was in your shoes... Hey, I'm sorry. I didn't mean to upset you.
DIPI: No - you didn't say anything that's not true. I'm just scared.
PIERCE: Of what?
DIPI: That we won't come back from this. That Shane's broken something with all of his lies - that my marriage won't survive this.
Pierce goes to hold an upset Dipi's hand, but then stops himself and withdraws it again.
Exhibition venue
Yashvi joins Ned and Roxy by the drinks table, and tells them what Andrew Shannon said about Ned's 'confident debut'. Ned is surprised and pleased to hear this.
Meanwhile, Paul and Terese are talking to Andrew about Paul's portrait.
PAUL: I don't know if you're familiar with Helen Daniels? She was a quite prominent local artist. Anyway, this piece was inspired by one of her works, of another local identity.
Meanwhile, Ned still can't get over the 'confident debut' remark - and Yashvi tells him that everyone else here is raving about his paintings, too.
NED: That's really nice. But you know the only opinion that'll matter to me is yours, right?
Roxy gives them some space.
YASHVI: I'm gonna love my portrait. Course I am. But it doesn't mean it's gonna magically fix everything.
NED: I know I've got a lot of ground to make up, Vee. But I just need a sign that this isn't over for you. Cos it's definitely not over for me.
YASHVI: I'm just here to support your art, that's all.
NED: Yeah, right - of course. Sorry, I didn't mean to pressure you. I will dial back the desperation.
YASHVI (smiling): Is that what that was?
NED: Yeah, well, I was gonna get on my knees and -
YASHVI: Oh, no, don't you dare!
NED: Okay, I'll save it for later.
She laughs.
No 24
Hendrix is on the sofa when Chloe comes in.
CHLOE: Ding-dong, incoming!
HENDRIX: What's incoming?
CHLOE: Oh, I was just, uh, making sure that you weren't still Skyping with Harlow.
She says 'Skyping' with accompanying air quotes, implying she thinks there may have been more to the chat than conversation!
HENDRIX: Whoa, whoa! What kind of pervert do you think I am?
CHLOE: The teenage kind.
HENDRIX: ... Yeah. Fair. Fair.
Chloe explains she's heading to the exhibition shortly, but her new shoes are giving her pain, so she's come back to change them. Hendrix reports that Harlow is 'scaring the hell out of all the Lassiter's big wigs' in New York with her green initiatives.
CHLOE: Can I ask you something? Have you noticed anything going on with your dad today?
HENDRIX: He's no weirder than usual. Why, what's happened?
CHLOE: I dunno. He... he just was... flat before. You haven't noticed?
HENDRIX: Nah. All I can see is he's just stoked that you're home.
CHLOE: You're right. I'm probably just overthinking things.
The Waterhole
It's now Pierce's turn to confide in Dipi about his own relationship.
PIERCE: When Chloe said that she can only ever think about us in the present, it made me realise that, you know, even though we're married, she's never actually fully committed to our future.
DIPI: Chloe loves you.
PIERCE: You don't have to make it right. I think I've always known that I love her more than she loves me.
DIPI: You could be wrong.
PIERCE: But I'm not, okay, and I just have to get used to that. But Chloe's happiness is still the most important thing to me, so...
DIPI: ... It's hard work, isn't it - this love business?
PIERCE: Yeah, it is. Do you think you ever really know someone?
DIPI: I used to think so. But people change. They keep secrets, for whatever reason. Marriage is the hardest thing I've ever done.
PIERCE: Funny. It's meant to be easy with the right person.
They gaze at one another, tension in the air. Pierce suggests they should get going, so as not to miss the show. As he gets up, Dipi looks worried.
Exhibition venue
Ned is preparing to unveil his masterpiece of Yashvi; he's terrified, but Terese assures him he'll be fine. He calls out for the assembled punters' attention, and they gather around.
NED: This has been a dream of mine for a long time, and I wouldn't be here without the support of my friends and family so, to everyone, thank you. Now, you probably realise that there's one portrait that I haven't revealed, and that is because it is my official entry into the Osborne Prize. And the subject is someone very important to me.
Yashvi smiles nervously in the audience.
NED: The people that know me know how much she means to me, and, uh... how much my life literally revolves around her. But painting her has been my greatest challenge. She is my inspiration, my muse. I literally wouldn't be here without her. How do you capture that in one portrait? I just hope I've done her justice.
Ned pulls back the sheet that's hanging over the canvas, and the crowd gasps - as the portrait underneath is revealed to be not Yashvi's, but Scarlett's, complete with the slash down the middle that she made with the palette knife! Yashvi's smile fades.
NED: Uh, I'm sorry, this isn't right...
But Scarlett herself has appeared at the back of the venue, and walks slowly towards the gathered crowd. Roxy, Paul, Terese, Bea, Yashvi and Levi watch with concern.
SCARLETT: I knew you couldn't resist showing it. You've been harassing me for weeks. Hounding me with your sick, twisted obsession! But this ends today. I'm not living in fear of you anymore, Ned. None of you helped me when I begged you to. No-one helped me. And you did a great job convincing everyone I was the crazy one - when it was you all along. And now, everyone can see the truth.
NED: Shut your mouth.
SCARLETT: Yeah. Show them who you really are, Ned.
NED: What the hell is wrong with you? Why won't you get out of my life?
SCARLETT: Or what?
NED (shouting): Get out! Get out!
Ned starts marching towards Scarlett, who turns from him and runs out of the building. Levi runs after them, and Yashvi calls out after Ned...
No 30
Pierce and Dipi come in - Dipi's had a text message from Yashvi, asking her to come home, but with no further explanation. Dipi realises Shane must be asleep next door, and lowers her voice. Pierce says he should go, but Dipi's keen for him to stay for a cuppa and a bite to eat.
DIPI: That was really good wine. Thank you for that. And thank you for listening.
PIERCE: Hey, you listened to me too.
DIPI: Wine and sympathy - the perfect combination. And now, coffee and reality.
PIERCE: Yeah.
They gaze at one another again, at close quarters, as silence descends - there is definitely chemistry crackling between them.
PIERCE: I should go.
Shane appears, surprised to see Dipi back so early. Pierce leaves. Shane asks Dipi if everything's okay. She says it is, but looks far from convinced.
Exhibition venue
Terese is trying to call Ned, but he's not answering his phone. She asks Roxy to tell her and Paul what's been going on with Scarlett, from the beginning. Paul's annoyed they've been kept in the dark.
ROXY: He asked me not to tell anyone. He was embarrassed Scarlett sucked him back in.
TERESE: Paul, he's livid. What if he catches up to her?
Andrew Shannon is looking with intense curiosity at the portrait of Scarlett, and Roxy goes over to join him.
ROXY: I bet you're wondering where Ned's real entry is.
ANDREW: Extraordinary.
ROXY: Sorry?
ANDREW: Unformed, even.
Levi comes back in, and reports that Scarlett and Ned have both taken off in their cars.
YASHVI: Is he following her?
LEVI: I hope not. It wouldn't look good for him.
Yashvi goes to call Ned.
A road somewhere
Ned is in the car, and takes Yashvi's call, putting it on speakerphone.
NED: I'm sorry, Vee - that painting, she must've switched it for yours.
YASHVI: Ned, are you chasing after Scarlett?
NED: I'll be okay.
YASHVI: Ned, are you going after Scarlett?
NED: I'll call you tomorrow, okay?
He hangs up.
Exhibition venue
Yashvi, Bea and Levi look worried as Yashvi's phone goes dead.
A road somewhere
Scarlett smirks from the car in front, as Ned tails her down the highway. She waves into her mirror at him, mockingly. Ned revs his engine angrily.
