Number 30
Karl arrives home as the family are about to have their supper. He wants to talk things over with Susan, but she isn't at all in the mood to listen. After Bea overhears some of their terse conversation, he's forced to tell the family who Olivia is - an old friend that he reconnected with.
SUSAN: She's not just an old friend, they dated!
"It was a long time ago," Karl quickly adds in to reassure the family and that "nothing is going on between us." Susan isn't too fussed about that, what she is irate about is him discussing their "most personal problems to another woman."
SUSAN: You betrayed me.
Goodwood prison
Andrea is like a dog with a bone - trying to get her mum to organise it so that Hugo visits because she misses him so much. Heather is sympathetic to her daughter but explains now isn't the time to ask for the visit. She also puts the kybosh on Andrea's plans to share her illicit alcohol, fearful that her sentence could get extended if caught.
Number 30 (next day)
As Toadie tries to get the kids ready, Dee drops round to tell him about her plan to visit Heather. He isn't happy at all and after she forces him to, bluntly tells her that she is "making a mistake."
TOADIE: I'm never going to be happy with you seeing her.
DEE: I know. I just wish it didn't have to be like this.
He asks if she can let it go and her quick reply is no, because she is her mother and "can't pretend she doesn't exist." While admitting that its not easy, she is hopeful they "can get through this," they simply "need to be honest with each other."
Ramsay Street
Karl rushes after Susan so that they can talk, but she is in a rush to get to work as she's got a meeting with the department regarding Angela Lane. "I made a mistake and I want to fix it," he says to try and get her to talk, but the quietly seething Susan, simply tells him to get his hands off the door so she can drive away!
"That did not look good," Hendrix says to Harlow after the pair watched what was happening from the driveway of #24. Harlow is putting it down to a "tiff," but Hendrix thinks its more and asks if she can help him with something.
Number 28
Aaron and David pop over to see if the K's have done their reference yet and Bea explains now isn't probably the best time. while they are there, David mentions that it's time for Aster's next round of vaccines, but Elly rejects every day and time Shaun comes up with, citing that she needs to re-establish Aster's routine first.
Number 30
Toadie sits stewing remembering (with the aid of flashbacks) when Heather, as Nanny Alice, was in their lives last and what happened to Sonya as a result.
Goodwood prison
Dee is catching up with her mum by telling her about her life in Byron Bay. Heather initially apologises for going there (and what happened) but is more than happy at the outcome - having Dee in her life as her daughter.
Chat then turns to how things are for Heather in her new wing (good) and that she is trying to keep Andrea on the straight and narrow, even if she is trying to risk her sentence being extended by getting up to no good (the alcohol). Heather then mentions about Andrea is continually asking to see Hugo, something both women agree that isn't going to happen! While they are being honest with each other, Heather praises Dee for keeping her distance from Andrea.
School
After finishing chatting to Harlow, Susan enters her office to find a bunch of flowers sitting on her desk. She goes over and opens up the card to see what is written:
I'm sorry.
I hope you can forgive me.
Karl
She immediately scoffs and then throws the flowers in the bin!
Number 28
Hendrix sneaks into the house to place a box on the kitchen counter. Before the lad can leave, he hears Karl talking to Bea (about Olivia) and quickly dives behind the sofa so not to get caught when they come out from the bedrooms. Bea suggests that if Karl needs to talk, then it would be better if he used one of them than Olivia. Karl knows who he would rather talk to - Susan but "she hasn't made that easy," which is why they "are where they are."
Karl then spots the box sitting on the kitchen counter and goes over to see what is in it - a new seat for his bike and a card saying:
To Karl, with love.
Despite it being unsigned, Bea concludes that it was from Susan and thinks it's a good sign and Karl says to her that he "always wanted this." Hiding behind the sofa, Hendrix can't keep the smile off his face at a job well done!
The Waterhole
Kyle spots Toadie sitting in the veranda of the pub and tells him his good news - he has his driving licence back so no more lifts with Sheila, even if he is a bit apprehensive about driving again. After noticing that Toadie looks a bit down, he explains why to his friend - Dee is visiting Heather, which he hates her doing that and adds that he is always going to be on edge every time she goes there.
After spotting Dee walking towards them, Kyle heads off. She tells him that the visit went well and gives him the heads up over what Andrea wants - for Hugo to visit.
TOADIE: That is never going to happen!
Dee knows that and adds in that Andrea has said the same thing to Andrea. Toadie is relieved to hear that at least but remains diplomatically quiet when Dee then adds that she thinks Heather is trying to change.
School
Harlow and Hendrix run into each other to see how well their mission has been accomplished. He is happy that Karl loved the bike seat but given she wasn't in the room when Susan saw the flowers, she can't report how they went down with Susan.
Just at that, Karl arrives at the school and enters Susan's office. He thanks her profusely for his bike seat while she points him to the bin to where the flowers are! We now find out why the flowers are in the bin - she seems "to remember a similar gesture in the past when you were sneaking around with Sarah Beaumont!"
SUSAN: Did you just think you could trod out same old trick and hope for the best?!
Karl is trying to explain that there's been "some kind of mistake" but Susan is on a roll and interrupts, accuses him of being "insensitive" and trying to get her to believe "nothing is going on!"
Hendrix's happy face has now quickly been replaced with a concerned one as we hear inside Karl tell his wife he didn't buy her flowers, he dropped by to thank her for the bike seat. This of course is news to her, and Karl fills her in on where he found the seat and assumed it was from her given how many times she's heard him go on about wanting one of them.
SUSAN: Oh, and have you been going on about how much you want one to Olivia?!
"It just keeps getting better, now she's leaving gifts for you in our home," Susan remarks after Karl admits that he might have mentioned the seat to Olivia. "We don't know it was her," he points out and just as Susan cries out "who was it," Hendrix bursts into the office and admits it was him!
HENDRIX: I'm really sorry, I was trying to help.
Number 28
Shaun enters the living room carrying Aster and declares that she is ready to go get her jabs. Elly tries to suggest she isn't but both Bea and Shaun counter every argument put up, until eventually she [metaphorically] puts her foot down and takes Aster back to her bedroom declaring that the pair of them aren't going anywhere!
School
"What were you thinking?!" Susan asks Hendrix and Karl also points out to the lad that whatever is going on, it's between them. "You probably shouldn't have taken it onto the street then," the lad mumbles to Karl's comment before Susan lambasts him for entering their home and her office.
HENDRIX: You've had my back always, I just wanted to return the favour.
Susan tries to point out that this isn't his problem to take on, they "are our issues." Karl adds that they "will work through them" before following on that they won't be solved "with one neat act." "Why not?" the lad asks back especially since they've admitted that it can be fixed.
HENDRIX: Why isn't it already?
When that question is met by silence, he then adds:
HENDRIX: Unless you're not really sure it can be?
After a few looks back and forth between the K's, it's Susan who says to him that they "don't know how things will go." Karl reassures the lad "not to worry about it."
Goodwood prison
Heather is tending to a plant out in the garden when Andrea picks up a stone and throws it against the wall, causing her to jump... and catching the guard's attention too! We find out why Andrea is annoyed - Heather got rid of her (alcohol) stash to protect her and promises to do it again if necessary. Andrea isn't happy at her mum doing that and thinks it's a phase she is going through, something Heather denies and her parting words before Andrea takes off is that she isn't "giving up on you."
HEATHER: You're my daughter, I care about you and somewhere within yourself is a good girl... just like your sister.
Road beside the Community Centre
As they walk towards the mural, Toadie is unloading to Kyle that Dee is sure Heather has changed (for the better) but is worried that its all going to fall apart, and Dee will get hurt. Kyle can't believe that Dee doesn't see what he does in Heather, knowing the full truth about everything but Toadie has the answer to that - "Heather turns lying and manipulation into an art form."
KYLE: You absolutely sure that Dee thinks Heather has changed?
TOADIE: Yes! But I'm not falling for Heather's act, I'm not going to let Dee fall for it either.
Lassiters Lake
Karl remarks to his wife that things must be "pretty grim" if Hendrix "casts himself as a marriage counsellor!" "He's worried," she replies and adds so are the girls.
KARL: And so am I.
He makes it empathically clear nothing happened between Olivia and himself. "I believe you," she acknowledges but adds it doesn't make what he did "hurt any less." "Turning to her was inappropriate," Karl says but then adds that he feels "like a stranger looking in on my own life."
KARL: I don't even know how to help the woman I love. And I don't want this to sound like an excuse, but you have to let me in.
SUSAN: I wish I could, I want to, but there's just been so much. The guilt that I've felt about what happened with Finn was overwhelming. And then to find out that you blamed me for bringing him back into our life... that, it just destroyed me. I felt completely alone and hopeless.
Karl now wishes he'd kept quiet, but Susan points out that wouldn't have been honest. The comment makes Karl wonder where being honest has got them?
KARL: I just wanted to protect you.
SUSAN: I don't need your protection.
Karl agrees but then adds that he doesn't want to feel shut out. Susan concedes that is why he turned to Olivia and they both agree to "learn to trust each other again."
KARL: I'm willing to try.
SUSAN: Yes, me too.
Goodwood prison
Heather seems shocked to see Toadie waiting for her when she enters the visiting room. She goes to tell him that she is sorry, but he interrupts to tell her to "save it" because he isn't there for her or her "personal healing journey."
TOADIE: I'm here for Dee.
HEATHER: Okay.
TOADIE: I don't know if she's told you, but we are back together.
"I'm happy for you," she says and is about to say more but Toadie cuts her off.
TOADIE: Things are going really well for us except we've hit a little speed bump.
"Me?" Heather hesitantly replies and Toadie confirms it and is sure the interest she has in Dee will only lead to her being hurt.
TOADIE: I won't let it happen.
"I don't want to hurt Dee," and almost remorseful Heather replies back to him, she simply wants her "to know the real me."
HEATHER: I want to know my daughter.
(Toadie then laughs in her face)
TOADIE: Well you are amazing! You haven't changed a bit. I can tell you're lying through your teeth.
HEATHER: (tearfully) No I'm not.
TOADIE: Really?! Okay, well, if you have really changed, then why don't you do what's best for Dee? BACK OFF, STAY THE HELL OUT OF HER LIFE!
