No 30
A despondent Sonya is reading the test results, as Toadie returns from putting Hugo to bed.
SONYA: You know 99 percent accuracy still leaves room for error?
TOADIE: Sonya...
SONYA: No, we've been duped by a DNA test before, Jarrod.
TOADIE: Cos Andrea switched the samples. There's no way she could've done that this time. I know this is a shock - I'm in shock too. We're gonna get through this, though. Tell me you believe that? I love you.
Hugo is crying, and Sonya tells Toadie to go and see to him - they can talk in the morning. She continues to look distraught as he goes.
The Waterhole
Ned is on the phone to Brad, thanking him and saying he's 'truly sorry' (presumably about his feelings for Lauren). Ned says it's best he stays in Erinsborough to sort himself out.
As he ends the call, Ned sees Elly at the bar. She's still embarrassed after assuming he wanted to get back together with her, but Ned adopts a conciliatory tone, saying he'd been meaning to call her to chat it out. He explains he's sticking around for good, as Terese has offered him a job as a porter at the hotel.
NED: You know, I would like us to be friends.
ELLY: Oh, I dunno, Ned - being friends with the ex - it's a little bit tricky!
NED: What if I shout you a drink?
ELLY: Well, then I will make an exception!
She then remembers she'd decided only to have one drink tonight. Ned is impressed! Elly leaves.
Lassiter's
Paul, Leo and Terese are having a meeting about the boat. Terese wants to ditch the charter company that has been managing the rentals for the vessel, and handle the hiring themselves. She suggests Lassiter's could handle it, and integrate boat hire into its packages. Leo feels this makes sense, so Paul says Terese and Leo should put together a proposal.
Terese objects, saying she can handle it herself, but Paul says he needs someone to represent his interests. Terese grudgingly agrees.
No 30
Sonya has got out of bed to give herself a hormone injection for the IVF, having realised it will throw off the schedule if she doesn't do it tonight. Toadie, who has followed her into the living area, seems hesitant - but she asks if he'd like to inject her like he did last time, and he agrees. There's an awkward sense of going through the motions as he administers the injection, and then kiss.
Lassiter's
The next morning, Ned is in his porter's uniform, ready for his first day - Terese explains the basics of his role. He doesn't seem hugely enthusiastic and isn't keen on having his tie done up - but Terese tells him the uniform is strict!
TERESE: I know this is a change of pace for you, but you'll get used to it.
NED: Hey, you set this up for me; you didn't have to. I'm just glad to be busy.
TERESE: Well, you will be busy. In fact, your shift started five minutes ago!
NED: Right. Better get to work then, boss!
No 30
Toadie gets up with Hugo to find the house empty. He finds a note from Sonya, saying she's decided to take Nell to daycare early and head to work.
Harold's Café
But Sonya is actually at Harold's, chatting to Dipi about Hugo and the DNA results.
SONYA: I was up all night trying to figure it out. And whatever happens, I can't make Hugo not Jarrod's. Which means that we're stuck with Andrea too, if she ever shows her face again.
DIPI: Son, you've been able to get over the things she's done to you before - and you're so much stronger now.
SONYA: Yeah, but that's it. I don't think we're past it. Not with Hugo here. I mean, he's just - he's a living reminder of one of the worst times of my life.
This conversation is interspersed with scenes of Toadie looking after Hugo back at the house.
SONYA: It's an awful thing to say, because he's just a little baby that's lost his mother. But I just look at him, and it just brings up all these feelings again, you know?
DIPI: As tough as it seems, I really think you need to let Toadie know how you feel.
SONYA: Yes, but what is that going to achieve? I'm sure he feels bad, and I don't want him to feel worse.
DIPI: Yeah, but even so, holding in all of this stress, it's - it's not good for you. And what about your plans?
SONYA: Well, I don't know. Jarrod gave me my hormone injection last night - and I was there, you know, trying to make it like everything was okay. But his heart was not in it.
DIPI: Do you still want to go through with it?
SONYA: I do. But am I crazy for thinking that I could handle another kid right now? Or that Jarrod would even be on board now that he's got Hugo?
DIPI: You have to talk to him.
SONYA: I know, but I'm scared. I'm scared that everything we've wanted - everything is just about to fall apart.
Lassiter's Complex
Elly and Mark are walking towards the hotel. Elly is thanking Mark for helping with Bea and her studying - saying it's earned Mark a coffee. They see Ned hard at work bringing in luggage.
MARK: Ah, looks like I'm not the only one who's had a career change, hey, Ned? At least I'm my own boss!
No, Mark, you're not - liar! Anyhow, Ned doesn't raise to the bait, and just gets back to work. But now Elly is angry with Mark for baiting Ned.
ELLY: Was that really necessary?
MARK: Oh, come on - I was only stirring.
ELLY: You know what? I don't want to have a coffee anymore.
She walks off in a huff, leaving Mark bemused.
The Boat™
Terese and Leo are discussing their joint proposal to bring the boat within Lassiter's ambit. Terese is annoyed that Paul didn't just say yes in the first place, but Leo tries to remain focused on the task at hand. She also objects to Leo being sent along to protect Paul's interests.
TERESE: I mean, what does he think I'm going to do, steal the lifejackets?
LEO: I dunno. Isn't this your whole shtick?
TERESE: Sorry?
LEO: You and Dad! You never agree on anything if there's an opportunity for an argument first.
TERESE: No, no, no, no - that's his MO, not mine! (...) Your father's the unreasonable one, not me.
Leo just smiles.
Ramsay Street
Mark is putting the finishing touches to the new fence around the front of the house.
AARON: You know the neighbours are gonna think we're trying to keep them out?
MARK: Yeah. If only!
Aaron asks if he's resolved things with Elly after she told him off earlier. Mark says not, adding that he thinks Elly overreacted.
AARON: Point-scoring with Ned isn't the best look.
MARK: Look, I was no ruder to him than he was to me the other day.
AARON: Still, it doesn't reflect very well on you.
MARK: If she doesn't have Feelings™ for him anymore, what does it matter?
AARON: As long as you don't come off looking jealous, that's all.
MARK: I just don't like him. That's it!
But Aaron says Elly probably does - as a friend - so Mark should 'be the bigger man' and make more of an effort to get on with Ned.
Harold's Café
Dipi and Sonya continue their chat; Dipi offers to look after Hugo whenever they want, so that Sonya and Toadie can have quality time together.
At this point, Toadie comes in with Hugo, and Sonya watches them from the kitchen, looking upset. Sonya heads out of the kitchen and greets Toadie; apparently she hasn't been answering his calls. Toadie suggests they talk, but Sonya claims she has to get to the nursery - they can talk at home later.
Lassiter's Complex
Mark arrives to make a ham-fisted attempt at burying the hatchet with Ned, and begins helping him to unload luggage from a car.
NED: Do you need something?!
MARK: No, I just came to talk to you, actually.
NED: Well, I'm working, as you can see.
MARK: Well, this must be weird for you, wearing a uniform. Doing this kind of a job.
NED: This kind of job?
MARK: No, I mean, you're just used to being your own boss. It can't be easy taking orders.
NED: Right - cos you know all about demotions, yeah?
MARK: I wasn't having a go.
NED: Actually, you weren't demoted, were you? You were fired for tampering with evidence!
MARK: You know what? I don't need this!
NED: Neither do I.
MARK: Great.
Mark walks off, and Ned waves him goodbye!
Harold's Café
Elly catches up with Ned at a table. Ned tells her that Mark came back and started throwing his weight around again.
NED: I mean, the guy is so arrogant! He goes out of his way to tell me how sorry he is that I'm slumming it!
But when Ned explains the context of the conversation, Elly thinks it sounds as if Mark was trying to make amends for being a douche earlier on.
Meanwhile, Gary fusses over baby Hugo, and tells Toadie he thinks he looks just like him. Toadie admits he's been nervous to think that way given the circumstances! He explains to Gary that it couldn't possibly be worse timing, with his and Sonya's attempts to have a baby of their own.
If IVF works, they could have another baby, says Toadie - or even end up with twins. But the process is an emotional rollercoaster, and he's worried that with everything that's gone on, it's not the right time for the IVF.
TOADIE: Am I the worst husband in the world if I just want to put the brakes on a little bit?
GARY: Not where I'm coming from. But it can't be an easy conversation to have with Sonya.
TOADIE: I've hurt her so much.
GARY: On the other hand, a baby is a baby. And if Andrea doesn't turn up, then Sonya becomes his mum, more or less. Maybe you could convince her to wait a little before you press go on the next bubba. Just to see how this pans out?
The Boat™
Terese is on the phone to Brad, promising to keep a close eye on Ned while he's in town. Afterwards, Leo asks if everything is okay.
TERESE: Yeah, for the most part. You know, in spite of everything, Brad and I are still very much bonded over our children. And Ned's not even mine.
LEO: Do you miss being in a relationship?
TERESE: ... Oh, I miss having my 'someone'. You know, that person in my life that's in my corner.
Leo asks how the matchmaking with Piper is going. Terese says she thinks Piper's slowly but surely getting past Tyler.
TERESE: Even the strongest need a bit of love in their lives, Leo - maybe with just a little nudge.
Leo looks thoughtful.
The Waterhole
Leo is now engrossed in writing up a document on his computer of Terese and Paul's common interests! So far he has work, travel, wining and dining, and competing with each other! Gary, who is delivering desserts, sees what he's doing; Leo tries to spin some yarn about it being for a Lassiter's PR campaign, but Gary can see that Leo's attempting to play Cupid to Paul and Terese.
GARY: Trust me, it's a terrible idea.
LEO: Just because they didn't work out the first time, it doesn't mean they won't ever.
GARY: Look, I'm not denying the two of them have a serious spark. That definitely played a part in our break-up - but that doesn't prove that they can go all the way.
LEO: Oh, I dunno.
GARY: Then why have they never tried? Because Terese knows in her heart of hearts they're poison. Oh, they're intellectual sparring partners that love butting heads, but Terese needs someone who's not scared to be vulnerable. That's why we got along so well.
LEO: It's maybe why you ended.
GARY: I didn't challenge her enough.
LEO: Well, Dad would.
GARY: Maybe. But Paul would never be able to drop his alpha male defences for long enough to allow Terese in. That's why he'll never win her heart.
No 30
Toadie is sitting on the couch with Hugo. He looks wistfully at a framed picture of himself, Sonya and Callum - and then more photos, of Toadie and Sonya with Nell, and the pair on their wedding day. Toadie looks thoughtful and emotional, as Hugo babbles.
Ramsay Street
Mark is washing his car, when Elly shows up with a takeaway coffee for him.
ELLY: I like your fence.
She explains she heard about his second run-in with Ned, but gathered that Mark was trying to be nice - and may have now convinced Ned of that too.
MARK: Look, full disclosure - you're the reason I went to see him.
ELLY: Really?
MARK: I know what I said earlier wasn't cool.
ELLY: Well, the fact that you know that counts for a lot.
MARK: Enough for me to ask for a proper date?
ELLY: If you and Ned were buddies, then maybe! But this has earned you a takeaway coffee and a stroll around the lake!
MARK: I'll take what I can get.
They head off for their stroll.
No 30
Toadie comes in and finds Sonya looking despondent.
TOADIE: Don't know why, but the Bombers theme song seems to put him to sleep.
SONYA: Well, it worked for Nell, when you used to sing it for her.
TOADIE: Yeah, I remember.
SONYA: I'm sorry I've been avoiding you.
TOADIE: Well, you're here now. I get that this is hard.
SONYA: Oh, it all got too much. Just hearing you up all night with Hugo, and then, just the way you looked at him in the café. He's your son.
They hold hands.
TOADIE: I know a baby wasn't meant to come into our lives in this way. And I cannot apologise enough for the hurt that I have caused you. But I look at Hugo, and -
SONYA: He's blameless.
TOADIE: Yeah. Completely. He didn't ask for any of this. He's just a baby, and he deserves to be safe, and to be loved.
Sonya gets emotional, which she says is down to the hormones.
SONYA: I have enough room for Hugo, okay? I've been thinking about it, and I know it's not gonna be easy. But I have enough love for you, Jarrod. I have enough love for him, and for a baby of our own.
TOADIE: ... You don't think that it's gonna be too full-on?
SONYA: Well, yeah, it's gonna be a bit of a juggle. But we just have to look after each other. I do believe there's nothing that we can't manage if we work together as a team.
TOADIE: I wish I could be as sure as you.
SONYA: Oh, you are - you are. You're just scared, which is completely understandable.
TOADIE: ... No, I'm... I'm sorry, Sonya. I have to be honest. I don't think that I can do this. Not right now. Not all at once.
SONYA: Jarrod...
TOADIE: I know the timing is terrible. But I think we have to put IVF on hold. Put our baby on hold.
