Erinsborough Hospital
Louise and Hamish stare at one another in silence, until Louise hears Sheila exclaiming from behind the curtain. A dishevelled Sheila claims she was looking for her earring, but Louise looks suspicious.
LOUISE: I need some time with Mr Roche before his MRI.
But Hamish says he needs to speak to Sheila first, so she can pass some information on to Tyler. Louise has no choice but to wait outside, but doesn't look happy about it. Once she's gone, Hamish says he doesn't really need Sheila to pass on a message - he just wanted to give her a proper goodbye. Sheila worries about whether Louise knew what they were up to. Hamish says 'who cares?'
SHEILA: Well, it's not a very good look, is it? Us carrying on like teenagers in a hospital room, when you're supposed to have a head injury!
HAMISH: I loved every second of it. But maybe we should slow down until I'm 100%.
Sheila agrees, and suggests she bring him dinner on the boat later. Hamish agrees, and Sheila leaves, trying to tidy her hair in the process. Louise watches her suspiciously as she walks through reception.
Harold's Café
Sam is telling Sonya that he felt he was in with a good chance of getting the school counselling job - but that when Elly called him just now, she sounded all polite, as if she was about to turn him down, and said she was speaking to other candidates. Sonya says there's bound to be a lot of interest but that the school would be lucky to have Sam.
Meanwhile, Tyler and Aaron are talking about Hamish pulling his donation for the wellness centre. Tyler defends Hamish, saying he's a businessman and can't be seen associating with organisations marred by scandal. Aaron says the centre could go under without Hamish's money, but Tyler says he's sure it won't come to that - and heads off to the hospital to meet Hamish, looking worried.
Erinsborough Hospital
Hamish and Louise are having a heated chat in the examination room.
HAMISH: Why didn't you tell me you were in town?
LOUISE: Who was that woman?
HAMISH: Her name's Sheila Canning - she's Tyler's next-door neighbour. She's a sort of mother-figure - that's why I need to keep her on side.
LOUISE: A mother-figure with a crush?
HAMISH: Yes, that's all it is.
LOUISE: Why was she hiding?
HAMISH: When she heard you come in, she panicked mid-seduction. Well, thank heavens you arrived when you did!
Louise seems to accept this, and explains there was a temporary nursing job going at the hospital, so she flew over to take it. She says she kept her job in Port Lincoln off her CV, however - so that 'no-one will suspect a thing'.
LOUISE: Are you sure you're not interested in her?
HAMISH: Positive. You can't believe what a gossip this woman is. She knows everything about everybody - Tyler, his brothers. She's a great source of information. That's all. Keep your eye on the prize.
Hamish is about to kiss Louise, when David walks in, and they quickly separate. Hamish tells David that his headache has gone, and that he doesn't think he needs a scan now. David's surprised, but agrees to cancel the scan, saying he'll organise a follow-up appointment for Hamish instead. David leaves, and Hamish tells Louise to go too, to avoid raising suspicions.
HAMISH: Besides, I might not be able to keep my hands off you if you stick around.
Louise smiles, apparently placated, and says she'll see him at eight on the boat - the same time Sheila told Hamish she'd bring him dinner! Louise leaves the room, and Hamish looks serious.
The Waterhole
Elly, Steph and Jack are at a table, discussing the possibility of Jack applying for the school counsellor job. Jack seems pleased, and thanks Elly for thinking of him - but Sonya has come in in the meantime, and overhears this while waiting at the bar. Jack decides he'll work on the application while he and Steph are away seeing Adam in Sydney.
ELLY: Hey - you're gonna knock it out of the park.
JACK: Thanks, I'm sure I will - yes!
Sonya looks annoyed, and once Steph and Jack have gone, she comes over to talk to Elly, admitting she's confused as she thought Sam was a shoo-in for the job. Elly says she's not sure the school can afford Sam, as he's overqualified - which she didn't realise until after their chat - meaning he'd have to go into a higher pay bracket. Elly mentions that Shane was the one who suggested Jack.
SONYA: Did he now?
Sonya leaves, looking suspicious.
No 32
Shane is working on his latest invention, while talking to David about liveability; we learn that the competition judges are arriving in a few days. David explains that the first round of judging is culture and entertainment, and asks Shane and Dipi if would like to help by organising an event.
DAVID: I've noticed Diwali is coming up. The Hindu festival of lights - do you celebrate it?
Dipi looks uncomfortable, and Shane says that Dipi's family has celebrated it in the past.
DAVID: It's literally about lighting up the world with joy. I think that's a perfect message to give the judges.
He suggests lighting up Lassiter's Lake at night for Diwali. Dipi queries whether this is a good idea; Shane assures her it will be fun. David leaves, and Sonya arrives, just as Toadie has come in from the garden. Sonya accuses Toadie of getting Shane to talk Elly out of taking on Sam for the counselling job - but Shane admits he's solely responsible.
TOADIE: What?!
SHANE: Well, you and Sonya are meant to be together, and if Sam got the job, he'd be a constant presence. And that wouldn't make repairing your marriage any easier, would it?
SONYA: ... Well, that was just out of line, Shane! You could've cost him his job!
Sonya marches out, and Toadie gives Shane a look.
SHANE: Someone had to do something, right?
Erinsborough Hospital
Tyler arrives to meet Hamish, who says he's feeling much better - but remarks that Tyler seems a bit despondent. He admits he's worried about Amy, Steph and the wellness centre. Hamish assures Tyler that he'll arrange the donation as soon as he's sure that the West Waratah Star isn't going to run a story on the cannabis that was delivered to the motel. Louise watches them from reception.
HAMISH: It's great the way you care about your friends, but I do think it takes too much out of you. Maybe it's time you take a little break.
TYLER: Yeah.
HAMISH: Why don't we do that boat trip sooner rather than later?
TYLER: What?
HAMISH: Do some island-hopping, you know? Chill?
TYLER: That would be great. But it wouldn't feel right bailing on Piper during the exams.
HAMISH: Thinking about everybody else but yourself. Maybe Piper needs some solo time to focus on her studies - less distraction?
But Tyler says Piper's had a lot on her plate and needs support, so Hamish pretends to relent - lamenting that a boat trip would have been fun. Tyler says he'll think about it. Louise watches worriedly as they leave.
No 26
Hamish arrives to see Sheila, who's in the garden polishing her gnomes. (She introduces him to two of them, Barry and Donovan.) Hamish tells Sheila that he'll have to cancel their boat date tonight, as some work has come up. He suggests they go out for dinner later in the week instead. Sheila tells him that she has the place to herself, and kisses Hamish. They decide to hop in the spa together.
Lassiter's Lake
Toadie is walking along the bridge across the lake, and finds the one of the love locks that were all the rage in Erinsborough in 2014; this one bears his and Sonya's names. Toadie looks conflicted as he holds it.
The Waterhole
Sam is telling Sonya that he understands Elly's dilemma regarding the counselling job - but Sonya says Shane shouldn't have interfered in the first place.
SONYA: Really, his concerns just aren't warranted.
SAM: Maybe they are. I want you to know, I gave Toadie my best professional advice when I was treating him. He has a lot to work through, and he should focus on that before reconciling with you. For both your sakes.
SONYA: Okay.
SAM: But if I'm being honest, the feelings I had all those years ago - they're still there.
SONYA: ... I don't even know what to say to that.
SAM: You feel ambushed.
SONYA: No, I - no.
SAM: It's okay. I don't mean to pressure you, okay? And you don't have to answer me if you don't want to. This job was only ever meant to be temporary - and I'll understand if you want me to give notice and go. But I'd like to stay. And I think I would regret it if I didn't own up to how I was feeling - and find out if there's even the slightest chance you feel the same way.
Sonya looks conflicted.
No 26
Sheila is lounging in the spa as Hamish leaves; the atmosphere is tangibly post-coital. They agree to see each other later in the week for dinner, and kiss.
Ramsay Street
Sonya is telling Steph and Jack about Sam's surprise confession to her, and that she told him she'd need time to think about it. Steph asks if Sonya has feelings for Sam.
SONYA: Well, I - no, I dunno. It's...
Steph tells her not to worry; Sam didn't want to pressure her, after all. Steph says they can talk it over when she gets home. Steph and Jack drive off to see Adam in Sydney, promising to say hi to Lucas and Vanessa for Sonya.
After they've gone, Toadie turns up to speak to Sonya. She apologises for barging in earlier and accusing him of orchestrating Shane's intervention over the counselling job. Toadie says it's fine.
TOADIE: But Shane wasn't wrong about us belonging together.
SONYA: Jarrod...
TOADIE: Please. I need to say this. I'm head over heels in love with you. And I have been since the first day you turned up on my doorstep to train Rocky. And I know that I told you that you were right to put the brakes on the other week. But I don't want that.
SONYA: But, I mean, what about you having to sort through your issues?
TOADIE: Yeah. I have come a long way already. And I will continue to go to counselling. But you're my wife. And I've sacrificed so much already because of my guilt over Dee's death. But now I am ready for what I want. And what I want is you in my life, forever. And if you feel the same way that I hope you do, then meet me on the bridge over the lake at sunrise tomorrow morning.
SONYA: Sunrise?
TOADIE: Yeah. I don't want to spend another day without you. And if you feel the same way, then be there. And if you don't, well, then, I will accept that it's over, okay? And if you want to move on, then I won't stand in your way.
Sonya tries to speak, but Toadie stops her, and leaves. Now she looks even more conflicted.
Lassiter's Complex
Louise surprises Hamish outside the new-look Harold's frontage. She notices his wet hair and asks if he's been swimming; he claims he had a shower at Tyler's. Aaron turns up, and for some reason, Louise says he must be Tyler's brother. Hamish is forced to think on his feet, and introduces Louise as...
HAMISH: ... my EA. She knows everything about me.
Aaron jokes that she could convince Hamish to reinstate his wellness centre donation. Louise remarks that she isn't sure about that, but says that she's sure Hamish will do what he can before he leaves town! Hamish angrily drags Louise away, saying they have a meeting to get to, ending the conversation with Aaron very abruptly. He looks puzzled as they leave.
Harold's Café
Sheila has arrived, and is telling Dipi that her spa encounter with Hamish was 'unlike anything I have ever felt before'!
SHEILA: And I mean that literally! (...) You know that scene in When Harry Met Sally when the lady says, 'I'll have what Meg Ryan's having'? Well, I don't think I've ever had what Meg Ryan was having.
DIPI: Never?!
SHEILA: Well, things were good with Frank, and Russell. And maybe I did have a... No, I think differently now! And now that I do, I want more! Much more! Do you think it's wrong to hope that Hamish never goes back to Queensland?
Dipi says not, and opines that he'll probably be around for a while given how steamy things are getting! Sheila nods ecstatically!
The Waterhole
David is telling Tyler and Aaron that he was surprised Hamish cancelled the hospital scan, having been so dead set on it previously. Aaron tells the boys what Louise said about Hamish leaving town, and thinks it's funny that Hamish never mentioned her before. Tyler's unfazed, saying of course Hamish would have an assistant.
TYLER: And yeah, he has to go back to Noosa at some point. He actually asked me to go with him for a while. And I might, as soon as Piper's done with exams. You do know there's nothing to worry about?
Aaron apologises for sounding overprotective.
TYLER: You mean you're buying into all the stuff Mark's been saying?
AARON: Bro! It's not just that. He went and pulled his donation from the wellness centre. I mean, come on, man - that's rough.
TYLER: Relax, okay? He told me today that he's gonna give it back soon. You can trust him.
The Marina
Hamish and Louise are on the boat, drinking wine.
LOUISE: Are you tiring of me?
HAMISH: What? Don't be ridiculous.
LOUISE: Because if you were, I'm not sure there'd be any reason for me to keep quiet about Russell's will.
HAMISH: Oh, sweetheart, there's no need -
LOUISE: I'm sure Mark and Chloe would like to know that we hid the original version. The one that gave them equal shares of the boat.
HAMISH: Come on, now.
LOUISE: Good luck convincing four Brennan kids to let you take a trip on it before they come to arrest you for tax evasion. You need me. Don't ever forget that.
HAMISH: I love you, Louise. When will you start to believe me? Seventh of November, we're gone. Heading for Palau.
LOUISE: And you really think this boat'll make it that far?
HAMISH: With Tyler on board to maintain the engine, yes! Look, Louise, you have to trust me! Tyler's got no job. He's at odds with Mark. Aaron is too thick to be a stumbling block. So all that's left is to get Tyler away from his girlfriend.
LOUISE: And if Tyler doesn't go for that plan when we're out to sea?
HAMISH: Well, then, it's just you and me.
Hamish sips his wine coldly.
The Waterhole
Sonya is with Sam. She thanks him for being honest about his feelings earlier, saying it was brave of him. She says she cares about him a lot, and that if they'd seen each other after she got out of rehab something could have happened between them.
SONYA: I just love Jarrod so much. And I know it's been really hard between us lately, but I mean, I've always known that he's the one that I want. And it's, you know, time I stopped fighting that. I'm sorry.
SAM: Don't be. I want you to be happy.
They hug, and Sam bids Sonya farewell, before leaving. She looks emotional as he goes.
Lassiter's Lake
The next morning, Toadie waits at the bridge at dawn, looking hopeful that Sonya will turn up.
No 30
Sonya applies make-up in the mirror, preparing to come and meet Toadie. Before she goes, she fetches a chair from the dining area, and uses it to stand on, in order to access a cupboard high up in the kitchen. Here, she finds her old dog-training documentation, and a pad containing behavioural notes about Toadie's dog Rocky, which was how they met.
Sonya has a flashback to 2009 (Episode 5755), remembering how she, Toadie and a young Callum were trying to train Rocky at the lake.
Lassiter's Lake
In the present, Toadie takes a call, presumably from Shane, whom he says will be the first to know when Sonya turns up. Toadie looks even more hopeful now, as he looks at the love lock, continuing to wait.
No 30
Sonya is still on the chair in the kitchen, having another flashback (again to Episode 5755) in which Toadie flirtatiously suggests Sonya could give him some private lessons on how to train Rocky. He's so ensconced in chatting her up, that Rocky has escaped in the interim! Toadie goes rushing after the dog, and back in the present, Sonya laughs at the memory.
Sonya checks her watch, realising she needs to get going - and topples from the chair, landing in a heap on the kitchen floor.
Lassiter's Lake
Toadie is now pacing on the bridge, starting to look worried that Sonya won't show.
No 30
The camera pans along the dog-training notes to where Sonya is lying, unconscious, on the floor.
Unmissable Drama
- Sonya is still out cold on the floor
- Susan suggests to Toadie that Sonya needs to hear him say it one more time
- Terese unveils the new- look Lassiter's Complex
- Paul is amused to see Gary shifting Terese's couch, telling him he doesn't know how sad he is
- Terese tells Paul that 'people have been hurt here'
- Gary tells someone on the phone that he's done something really stupid
