Recap
Paul wanting to set things right with Kate and Sophie.
Jade adoring Kyle.
Kyle invites Jade to move in with him.
Mark wanting to move in with Jade and Kyle.
Kyle and Jade can't find a housemate.
Harold's Store
Jade comes into the store after a run, and Kate and Michael both enquire how things were with Kyle, with their first night in the house. Jade says they need a third person there as a buffer. Michael reminisces about his days in a shared house and Jade thinks perhaps he wants to move in: but that's not the case.
Kyle arrives - they really need to find someone, and he has a friend who has a friend... But Jade says no, and suggests Libby. Michael butts in and says Lib has gone to see Ben, and no- one knows when she's coming back.
Cut to Kyle checking out the classifieds, and Michael reminiscing again about his share house to Kyle who's so not interested.
Kyle asks Kate whether or not she has any shifts going - he needs more money. Michael tells Kyle that he and his wife (Tash's mum) used to live off nothing from month to month, just to pay the rent. In fact, there was this one time when they had to keep warm by...
Kyle walks off.
Lassiter's
Outside Harold's Mark is still house hunting when Toadie walks by with Callum, who offers Mark a room again! Mark politely refuses. Kate comes over to clear his table, then take Toadie's order - but she's called away by Paul. He asks if she and Sophie would like to have some lunch with him, but she says no - she's working. She's surprised that Paul is even bothering to talk to her; he's made too many mistakes for them to have a proper Uncle / Niece relationship.
Kate stalks off, unforgiving, and Toadie calls Paul on his 'Uncle' act. Paul reminds Toadie that he's not a man to give up.
Harold's Store
Kate storms into the store where Sophie begs her for a raise in her pocket money - she desperately needs a new iPod. No- one *needs* a new iPod, but I get her point. Kate refuses - they don't have the cash right now. She tells Sophie to leave.
On her way out Sophie runs into Cal who says Kate's probably still annoyed that Paul asked them to lunch. Sophie backs her sister up: Paul doesn't deserve to be their Uncle. But Callum think that perhaps she should give him a second chance, especially as he's family and she doesn't have much of that left.
CALLUM: Whatever. It's just lunch, and Paul's paying. I know what I'd be doing.
The word 'paying' seems to give Sophie some food for thought...
Number 22
Sophie turns up to have lunch with her Uncle. Paul doesn't think it's a good idea; Kate wouldn't like it. But Sophie says she can make up her own mind. She puts on a great disappointed act, so Paul suggests they go to the city for the day. Sophie smiles to herself.
Number 26
Jade's on the phone to a potential client, but it's not working out - and she loses two clients. Kyle tells her it doesn't matter - he has found a way to save money. Switch off the light, the TV, one- minute showers, and put a brick in the toilet cistern. Out of desperation, Jade concedes.
(Green point: he only put the TV on Standby, meaning he's still using 80% of electricity as if it were still on. He should switch off at the socket. Ahem.)
Cut to later, and a musical montage of 'money and fancy clothes':
Kyle goes to make smoothies; Jade makes him whisk them by hand.
Kyle goes to make a phonecall; Jade switches his phone off.
Kyle warms his hands by the oven; Jade switches it off and reminds him they are not using heating.
Kyle huddles in a jacket, and Jade passes him a doona.
Kyle tries to get Jade to keep warm by holding her close to him and wrapping the doona around him but, distinctly uncomfortable, Jade pushes him away. They decide to go ask Michael for some advice. So, a filler episode for Michael, then...
Charlie's
Having lost the doona on the way, Kyle and Jade arrive to find Michael at the bar. Where else? He has no other life to speak of. They ask him how he did it, living with no cash (because, you know, they've tried for all of 1 hour). Michael agrees he can give them some pointers.
Harold's Store
Brennan comes in and says hi to a police colleague - who ignores him. Brennan orders a coffee and asks Kate if Paul's bothering her. He says he's happy to step in if required, but Kate defends herself, and says that if there's one thing she and Sophie agree on, it's Paul. Which can only mean that we're about to cut to:
Number 22
...where Sophie and Paul have arrived home from the city having had lunch. Paul gives Sophie the present he bought her - seems like an iPod Shuffle from the packaging. She's thrilled.
Paul tells her she can come to him for anything, and Sophie picks up the cue: does he want her to talk to Kate for him? Paul denies it. He knows that Kate's still angry, and Sophie shouldn't say anything.
Number 24
Sophie's at the dining table on her laptop, with her iPod playing. Kate comes home and Soph hastily tucks the iPod away. Kate asks how Sophie's day was. She lies and says she was with Callum before making an excuse to go to her bedroom.
Kate starts to make dinner, and on flipping open the kitchen bin sees the gift bag from the city, with the receipt inside.
Cut to later when Kate is fuming at Sonya that Sophie lied to her. Sonya tries to defend Sophie a bit: maybe Sophie's not angry at Paul, he is family after all. But Kate won't believe it and calls her sister from her bedroom. She demands to know about the receipt.
Kate yells at her sister, but Sophie puts up a staunch defence and declares that she just wanted Paul to be her Uncle again, but couldn't say anything because Kate hates him.
KATE: Really? Do you want an Uncle or did you just want an iPod?
SOPHIE: What's the big deal? He owes us!
Kate demands that her little sister take the gift straight back.
Charlie's
To another musical montage:
Jade takes two toilet rolls from the bar toilets.
Kyle nicks the sugar sticks from two tables.
They order two waters from the bar.
Kyle gets the business card of a woman giving away free samples when setting up house.
Kyle nicks some half open and half eaten crisps from another table.
Cut to later where Jade, Kyle and Kate are playing pool. Kate loses and has to buy drinks for Kyle and Jade, even though she tells them she doesn't really have any cash.
Brennan's at the bar and says hi to Kate who gets change for the pool table. Kyle and Jade rib her for not stealing the barman's tips when she was there!
Brennan watches Kate as Michael comes in and reminisces - yet again - about his shared house days.
BRENNAN: I've pretty much always lived on my own.
MICHAEL: You're kidding! You're missing out big time.
But Mark's not interested and leaves, still staring at Kate. Over at the table Jade and Kyle agree that this penny pinching really isn't going to work.
Number 26
Both now sulking at home, Jade orders takeaway. Brennan arrives at the door and announces that he's moving in.
KYLE: Dude, you're not staying here!
MARK: Ah, listen - dude - we both know why you moved into Ramsay Street, alright? It's to get closer to Kate. And I'm going to be right here making sure that you don't.
JADE: What's going on?
MARK: I'm moving in.
KYLE: No he's not!
MARK: You've got a room, I need a place.
He hands them this month's rent up front, in cash. Jade takes it and welcomes him to the house.
Harold's Store
Paul passes Kate in the store, and she apologises for Sophie's behaviour earlier, and about the iPod. Paul reiterates that he wants them to be a family, but Kate retorts that Sophie was just using him to get what she wanted. But now she's given it back it doesn't matter. Paul is surprised, and tells Kate that Sophie didn't give the iPod back.
Number 24
Kate returns home and Sophie stubbornly refuses to give her present back.
KATE: You can't use people to get what you want.
SOPHIE: I didn't!
KATE: Really? So why'd you go and have lunch with him behind my back?
SOPHIE: Because I knew that you wouldn't let me!
KATE: Yeah, for very good reason!
SOPHIE: It's not like he can't afford it.
Ooops. Paul's at the door and heard that one. He walks in and is upset to hear what Sophie said. He takes the iPod from her, and says she should come and see him when she wants an Uncle, not a bank.
PAUL: Oh, and next time listen to your sister. She deserves more respect.
Sophie's gutted and embarrassed and Kate's cross.
