Bushland
Nicola doesn't want to move the injured Fitzy. Most of the volunteers go, leaving the more experienced Nicola, Jay, Ned and Steve to tend to Fitzy. Kirsten isn't happy about leaving Ned but she goes anyway. Toadie is unable to stop Steph staying to help too. They move the fallen tree and Nicola has a look at Fitzy's injuries.
Meanwhile the Napiers pack up the picnic as the park is being evacuated. Rebecca worries about Karl and Susan but Ollie says they can't stay to look for them. He wants them to head for the lake but Marco argues against it. Elle just wishes they would hurry up and decide.
Susan and Karl can't get a phone signal. They decide to move to higher ground.
The picnicking crowd are still arguing. Ollie thinks their cars might be burnt out so the lake is the best option. The crowd come around to his logic and leave while still trying to get hold of Karl and Susan.
Karl answers his phone to Oliver but he can't hear him over the sound of a passing helicopter. He manages to gather they're headed for the lake but neither he nor Susan know where it is. They decide to keep going on the path they're on.
Car Park - Bushland
Kirsten transfers Mickey to Toadie's 4X4, telling her son she loves him before jumping back in the other 4X4. Toadie can't believe she's going back and shouts at Ty to stop her. However she's not to be stopped. Mickey can only watch her roar off into the distance.
Bushland
Back in amongst the smoke, Kirsten gets out and shouts for Ned but gets nothing. She goes further into the smoke, coughing and spluttering.
Carmella needs to stop and Ollie says they're close to the lake now. Marco says that's not the only thing they're close too - this was a bad idea. Declan tells them of a brick building nearby where they can take cover, so they head there (we see they've inadvertently left a bag of supplies for Chloe behind). The door is padlocked but Declan, wielding a rock, gets it open in no time.
Paul races around with a cloth over his mouth as sirens echo round about him. He sees Kirsten's abandoned 4X4 and jumps in, shouting for the missing driver. He spots Kirsten on the ground and shouts her name but then more burning debris falls between them and he gets back in the car, leaving. Kirsten raises her head an inch, watching him go.
Susan thinks they should've gone the other way but Karl tells her it's all around them. They take cover under a blanket, coughing and spluttering. They say "I love yous" and kiss, huddling together. Karl says they'll be alright, trying to calm a distressed Susan.
Hall
Ollie can't get through to anyone on his mobile but at least they're taking cover. Marco discovers they've left the bag behind, so Rebecca soaks a bit of Chloe's blanket with water and gives that to her to suck on.
Bushland
Karl and Susan hear a vehicle and Karl flags it down to discover it's Paul. They jump in and speed away.
The fire service volunteer group discover a track has been closed and Steve finds a Scout camp west of there they can head to for shelter. Jay and Steve help support Fitzy as they move quickly towards their destination. Tagging along at the back, Nicola finds herself losing grip and falling down the hill. A few seconds later, noticing she's missing, Steve goes back to get her.
Hall
Declan tells Rebecca about Paul watching them earlier - he's worried about him. Rebecca assures him and Elle that it was hours ago and he could be home now. Fitzy, Steph, Ned and Jay pile in.
Bushland
Steve rushes to Nicola's rescue and she thanks him with a big smacker right on the lips. He asks what she's doing and she apologises - she was scared. Then she rushes off ahead.
Hospital
There follows a weird, blurred, migrane inducing moment where we see Toadie standing about, paramedics wheeling victims in on trolleys and Karl tending to Mickey and Callum. Then we see it's Paul's eyes we're watching the room through. He stands, frozen.
Susan tells Rachel that's she okay as they pass; Callum hugs Toad. Mickey asks Paul if he's seen his mum but Paul just looks dazed.
Hall
Jay rolls off the list of those present over his radio to command. Chloe is still hungry and Carmella wishes she had her bottle. Jay discovers that Kirsten didn't return back with the others before he loses contact with control. Ned worries that Mickey could be out there too and Jay says she probably left Mickey behind - why put him in danger too? Ned decides he has to go and search. Jay argues that they don't know where the fire front is but Ned says they'd feel it if it was anywhere near them. Marco decides to go and so Ollie must too. Fitzy agrees with Ned that it's his call to make, despite Jay's protestations. Carmella doesn't want Marco to go but he's determined to retrieve Chloe's bottles. She tells him she lost her engagement ring - she can't lose him too. Marco says it's just a ring - he's not missing out on spending the rest of his life with her.
The boys go, saying goodbye to everyone. Jay warns them that if they let the fire get between them and the shelter, they know how it ends.
Bushland
The boys shout for their missing friends. Ollie's so affected by the smoke that Marco has to take him back. Ned continues alone.
Hall
Jay asks command where the fire front is but the radio keeps breaking up. He thinks he shouldn't have let them go but Steph tells him they wouldn't be here at all if it wasn't for him. There's a banging at the door and they manage to pull it open. Nicola and Steve come in and Steve isn't pleased to hear Ned's still out there. Steph defends Jay, saying there was no stopping Ned.
Hospital
Toadie tells Susan that he keeps hoping Kirsten is brought in but then when he sees the trolleys pass, he's really glad she's not on them. Susan tells him he couldn't have stopped her. Toad asks Karl for updates and Karl says they've managed to gather the fire front is headed right towards the hall. Nothing's certain though - it's impossible to predict.
Toadie calls Steph's mobile and tells her he has so much to say to her but he can't say it now, so he'll wait until she comes back. He tells her to call him. Susan looks on sympathetically and strokes his face.
Bushland
Ned shouts Kirsten's name, then finds her, wheezing on the ground. He scoops her up and carries her away.
Marco tells Ollie to go on ahead of him - he has to stop and get Chloe's stuff. Ollie thinks he's daft but Marco breaks away and manages to find the ring too.
Hall
The door handle is sizzling hot but Steve and Jay manage to let Ollie in. Ollie tells them not to shut it as Marco's right behind him but they can't keep it open as the fire is almost upon them. Steve asks about Ned but Ollie says he went to find Kirsten and he hasn't seen him since. Steve looks worried as Nicola looks at him.
Outside we see Marco reach the hall and bang on the door. Steve and Jay try to pull it open but it won't go. Carmy wails at them to open it. Marco tries to push from outside. The fire is fast approaching but the occupants of the hall can only stand and listen to his efforts, helpless.
Jay spots the flames from through the boarded up windows and shouts at everyone to get down and take cover.
Later, after the fire has passed over, Carmella asks if they can open the door. Steve and Jay manage to pull it open. A firefighter comes in and Carmella asks him about Marco but the fireman, eager to evacuate them. says he hasn't seen anyone. Carmella yells that they need to look for him.
