Kennedys
Harold has come to pick Karl up for his volunteer work. Madge comes in and asks Susan and Karl if they are going to come to the flying machine competition.
Madge tells Susan that she'll make herself available for the school council - the article in the paper was ridiculously negative. Susan says she's in! Madge reminds Susan that she does like to have her say(!)
No.30
Sally is upset because it's the anniversary of her mother's death. She is very short and rude with Joel when he tries to be sympathetic.
Flying Machine Competition
Phil is announcing the rules of the Flying Machine Competition. Everyone has got their flying machines ready. Karen is still nervous about flying the machine. Lou comes up with a wheelchair(!) and promises Karen it's perfectly safe!
Patrick snipes at Paul. Amy tells Patrick off for dissing Paul's father. Patrick laughs in her face.
Karen is in the wheelchair with a lifejacket and helmet on. They're going to launch her via bungee(!) Karen is very scared.
No.30
Susan is taking photos of Darl(!). Karl is worn out after his night volunteer work. Susan makes him breakfast. Karl says the volunteer work was pretty grim. He says that they all underestimate Harold - he is fantastic with the underprivileged people that he helps.
Flying Machine Competition
The first competitor is Pinhead on a pig-shaped machine. He dedicates his flight to his school teachers who said he'd never achieve anything(!). He falls straight in to the water!
Drew and Paul are up second. Paul pedals like mad and goes quite a long way before falling into the river. Everyone claps and congratulates him on reaching 15 metres.
Third attempt is a huge firework which goes straight into the water(!).
Fourth attempt is Patrick (Amy's brother). He falls straight into the river. Paul and Drew are very pleased he only managed 3.5 metres!
Fifth attempt is Madge and Harold. It turns out to be a boat with a kite attached(!). Lou insists to Phil that they have not entered a flying machine. Phil says they have to build and fly a self-designed flying machine so Madge and Harold are within the rules. Lou is not happy.
Sixth attempt is a dragon with wings that manages one metre(!)
Seventh attempt is Lou, Toadie and Karen in the wheelchair(!). Karen is terrified as they pull back the bungee ropes. She falls straight into the water. Lou and Toadie leap in to save her.
Last entrant is a law student and an aeronautical engineer(!). Their flying machine goes for ages and easily makes the other bank, landing gently.
Phil does the summing up. Phil declares Madge and Harold's entry was legal. The winner is declared to be the law student and the aeronautical engineer. He presents them with the Jack Ramsay bequest of $7000.
(Montage of flying machine entries)
Kennedys
Sally is still being ridiculously stroppy with Joel (whose crime was to offer her his support and sympathy!). Joel says he wants to talk. Sally says she really likes him but that she wants to break up with him - it's not working out. He asks her what more she wants! He looks disappointed.
