Recap
Christina overhears Paul talking about his dalliance with Caroline over the baby monitor.
No.22
Helen continues to talk about how Christina would never have got the job if it weren't for Caroline. Christina storms in through the back door.
PAUL: Hi, darling!
CHRISTINA: Don't touch me!
PAUL:(surprised) What?
CHRISTINA: How could you do a thing like that?
PAUL: Do a thing like what?
CHRISTINA: I heard you!
She holds up the baby monitor.
PAUL: Chrissie, listen, what you heard...
LUCY: You're too late Paul, we've heard every word and it's the sleaziest thing I could ever imagine.
HELEN: It's not as bad as it seems.
CHRISTINA: Cheating on me with my own sister, you don't think that's bad?
HELEN: Just give him a chance to explain.
CHRISTINA: I have head all the explanation I need! I want you out of here! Both of you!
PAUL: Oh come, on...
CHRISTINA: Don't touch me!
PAUL: Chrissie...
She slaps him.
HELEN: Christina! Calm down - please.
She starts to cry and keeps ordering them out of the house. Lucy is left behind to comfort Christina.
They hug, standing in the middle of the living room.
Garden of No.30
Phoebe asks Pam for advise about The Pill. Pam is a bit takenaback that Phoebe and Todd have embarked on a physical relationship at such a young age. Phoebe explains that she's having some side-effects like feeling moody. Just then, Todd come up and is a bit embarrassed at the conversation.
When Pam has gone, Todd admires Phoebe's brooch - it's a family heirloom. Phoebe loves it - it's been in her family for generations.
No.26
Paul and Helen are picking over the wreckage of Paul and Christina's marriage. Helen urges Paul to explain to Chrissie that there was no physical relationship with Caroline - but not yet. In a few hours, perhaps Helen will go and talk to her, when she's calmed down a bit.
No.22
Christina is cuddling Andrew and tells Lucy that she feels totally empty. She wonders when it started happening - when Andrew came along, or before that, when Paul and Caroline were lost in the bush together? Christina can't bear to think of her family being torn apart.
CHRISTINA: How could she do it? I would rather have died than...
She tails off, sobbing.
Christina gets herself together and tells Lucy she can have the job now - Paul didn't want to have it anyway. Lucy says she can't take it - not like this.
CHRISTINA: I thought he loved me! I really thought he did!
There's a knock at the door and Lucy goes to answer it. It's Jim, who is totally oblivious.
JIM: What's wrong?
LUCY: Why don't you ask Paul?
JIM: What's he done now?
LUCY: You really want to know?
No.26
Paul is pacing and Helen says she's made him up a bed in Todd's room. Jim comes in and immediately starts laying in to Paul. Helen tries to fend him off, but Jim is on a rant.
JIM: What sort of a man are you? What does it take to betray your wife with her own twin sister?
PAUL: It was just a kiss! That's all!
JIM: What monumental self-control(!) And that makes it alright, does it? Any decent man wouldn't have let the idea enter his head.
Paul gets angry and calls Jim a hypocrite - he cheated on his own wife which resulted in Glen. Jim isn't impressed.
PAUL: All this self-righteous hypocrisy is making me sick.
No.30
Todd is distracted and confesses to Phoebe that he's been to see his father. He's in a bit of trouble - he can't afford to pay his legal bills. If the lawyer drops the case his father will more than likely have a much longer sentence. Phoebe suggests going to Jim and Helen, but Todd points out that Jim did help before with bail money and ended up losing it. Phoebe says she'll get it from her inheritance - after all, she and Todd are part of each other's future. Todd is a bit uneasy, but realises he has no choice. Phoebe will talk to Dorothy about it tonight.
TODD: Hey. I love you.
PHOEBE: I should think so.
They kiss.
No.22
Lucy has made Christina some dinner, but she's not hungry.
LUCY: What do you think you'll do now?
CHRISTINA: I don't know. It's all happened so quickly I can't think.
There's another knock at the door and this time it's Helen. She asks Lucy to leave her and Christina alone for a while.
HELEN: Believe me, Christina, I understand how you feel. It wasn't to protect Paul that I didn't say anything, I thought it was best for you.
CHRISTINA: What I don't know won't hurt me. Especially when it's my sister and my husband.
HELEN: All that happened was one kiss. And they were so horribly ashamed, to the point where Caroline had to move away.
CHRISTINA: I don't believe that. If that's all there was to it, Helen, Paul would have told me.
HELEN: I've known Paul all his life and I know when he's telling the truth.
CHRISTINA: That's what I thought about my sister and look where that got me.
HELEN: He wanted to tell you, but I talked him out of it, I thought it was right at the time, but it wasn't and I'm so sorry.
CHRISTINA: Well I'm sure everybody's very sorry, Helen. But it's too late. If that's all you've got to say, can you go now?
No.26
Lucy rants at Paul and tells her she doesn't want any more to do with him. In fact, she's decided to resign. Paul is not pleased and begs Lucy to put a good word in for him with Christina. After some heated words, Todd pipes up.
TODD: Uncle Jim, don't you think we should try a little harder to understand?
JIM: We all understand only too well.
TODD: Yeah...well...it just seems to me that someone should understand what Paul has to say. We were all pretty stunned when Glen turned up and found out he was your son. But even then, we stood by you. Isn't that what families do? Seems to me it shouldn't be any different with Paul.
No.30
Phoebe has popped by to thank Pam for her advice earlier - she's seen her doctor and there's nothing to worry about. But she tells Pam that Dorothy says she can't lend Todd that money for his father's legal fees - her father left it for her university education.
Outside No.26
Jim has seen the light and is being more sympathetic towards Paul.
JIM: We're all human. We all make mistakes.
Paul says he doesn't know where the feelings for Caroline came from - they were just there, and he's never stopped loving Christina.
JIM: I understand the temptation. I had my own...involvement...with Caroline.
Yuk.
PAUL: Dad, I can promise that nothing like this will ever happen again. I've just got this sick feeling that it's too late.
No.22, the following morning
Lucy has come to see how Christina is but she's not much better. She feels she should have seen it coming. She's not looking forward to having it out with Paul.
CHRISTINA: It has to be done. I'd better get it over with. Could you tell Paul that I'm ready to talk to him now?
No.30
Phoebe and Todd are talking about Paul and Christina. Phoebe is trying to tell Todd that she can't lend him the money, but she can't bring herself to do it.
No.26
Lucy comes in to tell Paul that Christina wants to talk to him.
PAUL: Lucy, is she any calmer this morning?
LUCY: I'm not your spy! Go and talk to her.
JIM: Good luck.
PAUL: Chrissie, a reasonable person. It'll be alright.
He closes the door behind him.
LUCY: Don't bet on it.
Jim tells Lucy to cut Paul some slack - he's only human after all. Lucy isn't impressed and says that she still wants to give up her job.
LUCY: I'm not about to work in the same office as Paul. I'm not even happy about sharing the same planet!
Helen urges her not to over-react - Paul and Caroline did show restraint.
LUCY: Restraint? Gran, why don't you go and talk to Chrissie about restraint? Her life is ruined! All because Paul refuses to grow up and stop acting like some sex-mad teenager.
No.22
CHRISTINA: Paul, I might be naive, but I'm not stupid enough to believe that Caroline would uproot her life and leave her job, leave her home, and you would lie to me the way you have because of one innocent kiss!
PAUL: I didn't say it was innocent. But that's where it stopped, I swear! Look, I don't know how it happened, it just did! I was lonely I just...anyway, you spent so much time with Andrew, you were in a positive state of exhaustion.
CHRISTINA: So you called in the reserve?!
PAUL: It wasn't that at all. I was confused.
CHRISTINA:(angrily) That's always the easy copout for you, isn't it? You were confused, didn't know what you were doing. That's utter garbage, Paul.
PAUL: Chris, I can't tell you how much I love you. And I know me saying sorry isn't going to change things or make up for what I did, but I don't know what to do, what to say! I mean, can you tell me?
CHRISTINA: Oh, I wish I could. I loved you. I was happy in our marriage. I thought it was something we'd have together forever. I don't know how we'll copy losing...
She starts to cry again.
PAUL: Don't you see you don't have to? It's not lost, Chris. We can sort it out.
She shakes her head.
CHRISTINA: I would never be able to look at you again and not think about what you did to me. That's not my idea of marriage.
PAUL: I know it's going to take time. But we can sort it out...we can get back to the way we were. Come on, we can be happy again. You've got to give us that chance. Please?
