At the Clarkes
Eileen is so shocked that she is unable to give an answer to Malcolm's proposal. He points out that not many people get a second chance. She answers that second chances are one thing, second thoughts are another and she doesn't know if she can take the risk. She is frightened of being hurt again. Malcolm carries on persuading her and promises he won't let her down again. She tells him she doesn't know if he can be the kind of wife he needs. He says if she's talking about passion, all he wants is companionship and affection and knowing that neither of them have to be alone again. As a final push he adds that he's in love with her again. Eileen is hooked and says anyone that refused a proposal like that would be a fool. Malcolm kisses her and Des walks in to be told the good news. He's over the moon!
At Tony's flat
Scott interviews Mrs Romeo about the marriage she has arranged for Tony. She and Tony argue as Scott tries to keep up.
At the Robinsons
Madge is ironing and talking to Henry. They discuss how uncomfortable they feel sharing a house with the Robinsons. Madge points out that while they're out enjoying themselves she's stuck at home doing their ironing. Henry - "But mum, these are my undies." Madge pushes the (tiny) undies back into the washing basket. Henry - "These are your undies...!" Madge shoves her (much bigger) silky knicks back into the basket as Henry giggles (and so do I!). He tells Madge that he's planned her driving lessons and she asks what he means. Henry - "Well, police are clearing the streets, people are locking up their animals, insurance companies are having stress attacks..." She chases him out of the kitchen.
At the Mangels
Mrs Romeo has come back to visit Mrs Mangel, she needs someone to talk to. She tells her about her chat with Scott and how despite what he said about Australian traditions she wants to keep her own Italian traditions. What does Mrs Mangel think? Mrs Mangel thinks the answer lies in the tea leaves... oh no.
Mrs Mangel sees a dark young man in the tea leaves. An angel is beside him. Oh dear, between them is a sword or a knife. Mrs Romeo picks up that this means things will be bad between Tony and Angela. Mrs Mangel agrees and suggests that it's more important to be there for your children when they make mistakes rather than stopping them making them. Mrs Romeo is relieved to be given such good advice and leaves as Eileen arrives - she's come to break her news to Nel. Mrs Mangel can't believe it, she's furious with Eileen and tells her history always repeats itself. Eileen won't be brought down from her high and tells her she'll (Mrs M) be the first to admit it when she's wrong.
At the Clarkes
Des and Malcolm are celebrating with a beer and Paul arrives to join the party. He glumly tells them he's been chucked out of his own house - Gail's cleaning. Des tells him the big news and Paul's gob smacked. Once he recovers he suggests they have a card game that afternoon with the other boys on the street.
On Ramsay Street
Madge's first driving lesson is underway and not going too well - they've been in the car ages and not gone anywhere. Madge doesn't like Henry's "driving lessons for dummies" technique and tells him she knows what she's doing. He tells her in that case to start the car and watch the revs when she throws it into gear. A nervous Madge flicks a switch and looks at Henry in amazement as the windscreen wipers come on. He smirks. Madge - "Alright, what are revs?"
Paul stops by the window to ask Henry how the lessons are going. Eileen stops by the other window as Paul tells him what a disaster it was when he tried to teach Scott to drive. Madge shouts at them both to go away.
At the Clarkes
Eileen is complaining about Madge shouting at her. Malcolm calms her down and she tells him she is off to play bowls with Mrs Mangel, she hopes he doesn't mind? He assures her that he will find something to occupy him, as Des comes in with a card table. Eileen isn't impressed but he manages to talk her round, saying he needs to keep an eye on Des...
At Tony's flat
Tony is still protesting about Italian traditions. Mrs Romeo interrupts him and fills him in on a few facts about her own move to Australia. She still thinks her own ways are best, but he is Australian and she will let him find his own wife.
On Ramsay Street
Madge is bunny hopping around Ramsay Street as Paul and Scott watch and laugh. Henry is scared witless inside the car. As they stop Paul asks him if he wants to go to the card game at Des's and he's desperate to go but Madge refuses to let him, reminding him he promised to teach her to drive. He reluctantly sits back in his seat as Paul and Scott hum the funeral march and walk past.
At the Clarkes
The boys are talking poker and Malcolm's wedding. Paul hopes everyone has brought their wallets but Des points out Scott and Charlene have no money and they should play for matches. Paul refuses point blank.
On Ramsay Street
Henry is about at the end of his tether and so is Madge. Mrs Mangel and Eileen are arriving home from the bowls and stop to watch, Mrs Mangel commenting that that should have been Jane's car (She bought about a million tickets). Henry patiently tells Madge to put the car in first and press the accelerator a little bit harder. When she questions why he shouts in exasperation "You've got to at least be moving before you put it up to second!" She yells at him to stop yelling, and stamps on the accelerator, speeding backwards over the kerb and into a water hydrant. Henry shouts "Go forward!" which she does, causing the water hydrant to fall over and spout water 100 feet into the air - just as Eileen and Mrs Mangel come over. Henry and Madge (stupidly perhaps?) get out of the car too and the episode ends with all four dancing around in the spray and shouting.
