At the coffee shop
Mrs Romeo is thrilled with Jane - she is much prettier than her photograph. She invites Jane round for dinner that night so she can get to know her much, much better. Jane is scared - especially when Mrs Romeo pinches her cheeks, hard. She is conned into accepting the dinner invite and Mrs Romeo goes off to buy dinner. Jane throws a fit at Henry, who is delighted she's going along with the scheme. Sally comes in to join the row and he runs off. Sally and Jane compare notes about how the scheme is getting out of hand. Jane tells Sally to meet her outside in a hour - they're going to sort this out once and for all.
At the garage
Charlene is dressing Scott for a job interview. He is so nervous his hands are shaking. She tries to reassure him, saying it's "just a dumb old job interview. If you get it, you get it. If you don't..." Scott finishes her sentence with "And if I don't I'm going to kill myself." Look on the bright side Scottie! He goes racing off as Tony arrives for work, late. And also in Postman Pat's van. He tells Charlene how his mother is treading the fine line between caring a little and... Charlene asks "Driving you crazy?" He jokes "You've got one too eh?" Henry rushes in to tell Tony his mother has met Jane, and even worse she's invited her for dinner. They think things can still be okay until Charlene reminds them about one major obstacle they've forgotten - "That cute little battleship, HMAS Mangel"
On Ramsay Street
HMAS Mangel is off shopping and bumps into Malcolm Clarke. He tries to chat to her but she's having none of it.
At the Clarkes'
Mrs Clarke and Mr Clarke laugh at Mrs Mangel being nosy and Eileen jokes that "Nel Mangel would dredge the Indian Ocean with a hand pump if she thought that something was at the bottom of it." She quickly adds, "Not that there is of course." Malcolm isn't so keen to let the subject drop and reminds her how well they're getting on, again. She looks confused.
At the garage
Tony recounts a tale of how hard he used to work in his parents' shop when he was younger and how hard it was fitting in with the other kids when his parents only ever spoke Italian at home. Charlene asks about the arranged marriage and Jane and Sally arrive right on cue to tell Tony he can either come with them now to tell his mother the truth or they'll do it themselves.
At Mrs Mangel's
Henry has filled Mrs Mangel in on the cunning plan and not surprisingly she's disgusted by the whole thing. When his charm fails to win her round he offers her free lawn mowing to get her on board, then free window cleaning. She's in.
At Tony's flat
Tony bluntly tells his mother that the wedding is off. When she questions he admits that he lied to her and the wedding was a sham. She bursts into tears, more upset at the fact that he lied to her than that he didn't want to marry Angela.
At the Clarkes'
Malcolm and Eileen laugh over their dinner. They are delighted that Des has come home early, and he's delighted to see them getting on so well. As Malcolm goes out to get Des's bags Eileen tells Des his father is not the man she remembered - she actually likes him now and thinks she's wasted years of her life. Des asks if there's any chance they can try again but Eileen is terrified of the idea - what if he left her again? Des promises her he'll have a chat to his dad.
At the Ramsays
Scott comes home from his job interview, it was lousy. He worries that he'll never get a cadetship. Charlene cheers him up and tells him a woman from the Erinsborough News rang to talk to him. He moans that it's not exactly a major newspaper and Charlene points out that she's not exactly doing the Grand Prix circuit herself.
At the Mangel's
Jane has brought Mrs Romeo round to see her nan for a chat as she's new to the area. Mrs Romeo is still upset at Tony's lies. Mrs Mangel sits her down and says she's just pleased the whole charade is over. She goes off on a rant about society's values have changed and Jane has to remind her that Mrs Romeo's English isn't that good, perhaps she could speak more clearly? Mrs Mangel, pronouncing every consonant, quite understands. She introduces Eileen, whispering to Eileen "She's from Italy, speak slowly." Eileen shouts "Hello!" at her and Mrs Romeo shouts back "Hello!" Mrs Mangel then says she'll put the kettle on, still speaking in her slowest voice, and mimes making a cup of tea, adding "yum yum yum" for good measure!
At the Ramsays
Charlene is checking Scott's hair for nits as he lies on her knee contemplating the article he can write for the Erinsborough News job. He's worried he has nothing to write about as he's been a boring school kid for the last 13 years. Charlene, bored with the nit nursing, is now undoing his shirt as she reminds him that he just recently happened to get lost at sea and fall down a cliff face. He gets all excited but then realises that no-one would believe it. His thinking is interrupted as Henry drifts in. Charlene tells him he should have an invitation. He isn't bothered and tells them about Tony and his mum, the whole thing's a fiasco. Now his mum will put even more pressure on Tony about the arranged marriage. Aha! A light bulb goes on over Scott's head as he realises that would make the perfect article.
At the Clarkes'
Des and Malcolm are looking at the Racing Pages in the paper and discussing Eileen. Malcolm admits he was a lousy husband and father but times change. Des asks what his intentions are and he laughs. He concedes that he's lonely and is now really keen on Eileen. But how does Des feel about it all? Des smiles and tells him he reckons he can cope with that.
At Mrs Mangel's
Eileen and Nel are discussing children and feeling sorry for Mrs Romeo. Eileen says arranged marriages are a trifle pre-historic. "I think it's always better to surrender control. I never impose my opinions on Desmond." Mrs Mangel looks at her in disbelief. They decide they must help Mrs Romeo and Eileen encourages Nel to read Mrs Romeo's tea leaves - she could tell her something terrible would happen if the marriage went ahead.
At Tony's flat
Mrs Romeo is yelling in Italian and trying to make Tony go back to Perth with her. The door goes, it's Scott, come at the perfect moment to save Tony. He explains his idea for his article.
At the Clarkes'
Eileen comes home to an empty house and Malcolm tells her he sent Des out because he wanted to spend some time with her alone. He sits her in a chair and tells her he'd be honoured if she'd agree to be his wife, again. Perhaps for the first time ever, Eileen is speechless.
