At the Ramsays
Madge insists that Henry explain. He admits it was for Des but he leaves Sally's part out of the story. Eileen is very upset and can't understand - "as far as Desmond and I are concerned Malcolm doesn't even exist". She goes to see Des for an explanation. Henry tells Madge it's a hell of a lot worse than she thinks it is.
At the Clarkes
Harold answers phone to Henry and says Des is out but Eileen is there. Henry hangs up. Harold starts jabbering on to Eileen. She asks where Des is then tells Harold he has jeopardised a life time of trust and confidence (Des, not Harold). Harold, the wimp, goes to Madges!
At the coffee shop
Mike is closing up when Pete Baxter comes in. Mike is delighted to see him and they talk about their school days. Pete is back to be a bank teller at Des's bank. Mike winds him up about the terrible boss he'll have.
At the Clarkes
Sally and Des return home to find Eileen pacing the floor. Des asks if she's alright. She quietly asks him what he has to say - Henry has confessed everything. Des is devastated. Sally tells her it's all her fault, Malcolm Clarke is her father.
At the Ramsays
Madge is buzzing around the kitchen talking about Eileen. Harold tells her to shut up! He wants her to take a break from the family. She won't stop talking to listen to him. He blurts out that he wants her to go away with him for the weekend. She looks shocked.
At the Clarkes
Sally tries to explain to Eileen but she is even more hurt now she knows Malcolm had an affair. More than that, she can't believe Des deceived her like this. She asks what would happen if they found Malcolm, would he want to see him? He says yes. She replies in that case there is obviously no place in his life for her. Sally offers to leave but Eileen says she must stay, she and Desmond can find their father and play happy families.
At the Ramsays
Harold tells Madge they need time away from the problems of Ramsay Street. Madge isn't sure, she's worried about gossip. Henry winds Harold up further. Madge refuses to go away and Harold tells Henry he wishes he would keep his mouth shut.
On Ramsay Street
Mike tells Mrs Mangel he is going out with Pete. Mrs Mangel moans about having prepared the vegetables already. She also nags about Bouncer being loose in the street and warns him he will be run over again. Pete says he'd heard she's a bit of a dragon but Mike sticks up for her and says she just misses Jane. Pete sneakily says "I bet you do too."
At the Clarkes
Eileen is all packed up and ready to leave. Des tries to talk but she walks out, knocking Henry over in the process. Sally blames herself. Henry says they've blown it good and proper - there's no way Malcolm Clarke will call now.
At Mrs Mangels
Eileen arrives in tears. She (sort of) explains things to Mrs Mangel and Mike, saying Desmond has done a dreadful thing and she doesn't want to set eyes on him again. Mike winds Pete up more, saying he warned him about Des... that's his mother he's made cry.
Mrs Mangel comforts Eileen and offers her a shoulder to cry on. She says she went through all this with her own husband. Eileen says she would have understood, if only Desmond had told her what was going on.
At the Clarkes
Des is short with Sally so she goes off to bed. Harold comes home and Des tells him Eileen has moved out. Harold says she'll be okay once she gets over the shock. He goes to make a cheese sandwich and says Madge won't go away with him because she's concerned about tongues wagging. Des says what's more important - his relationship or a bit of gossip? He tells Harold not to put up with it - he should tell her she's going and sweep her off her feet. "What are ya, a man or a mouse?" Harold stops eating his bit of cheese (!) and says Des is right. He won't take no for an answer.
At the Ramsays
Harold strides in looking for Madge. Henry tells him Madge is out. Harold is pleased and starts going through the washing basket. He is taking Madge away on a short holiday and angrily tells Henry to go and get him a suitcase.
At the Mangels
Nell brings Eileen camomile tea. She tells Eileen she sometimes thinks "It'd be better if the good Lord had invented Eve first and forgotten all about Adam." Eileen says it's the hair. Men have so much body hair, like apes. They're closer to the animal family and can't help it (Ha ha ha! Have to remember that one for future use myself!) Nell comments that Mr Bishop is a true gentleman but Eileen remarks that she still has her doubts about him. Cut to -
The Ramsays
Madge returns with the milk to find Harold standing with her suitcase. She asks what's going on and he forcefully tells her "we are going on a holiday." She protests but he doesn't stop to let her draw breath. "For once in your life Madge Ramsay you are going to do exactly as you're told." He passes the suitcase to Henry and picks Madge up in his arms, forgetting his cast has only just come off! Quickly he throws Madge at Henry and carries the bag instead. Henry carries Madge outside, still protesting!
