Recap
Scott tries and fails to wake Lucy up. Jim tells him she's not asleep, she's unconscious.
At the Clarkes:
Eileen is praising Beverly's talents and questioning why she isn't married. She tells her she's failed to meet the right man - like herself.
DES: Oh she's met plenty of them but most of them are good runners!
Beverly repeats her earlier request about interviewing Eileen about the aging process. She needs someone who's articulate and self aware, and Eileen has looked after herself so well... Flattered, Eileen replies "My friends do say I have the jowls of a thirty year old." She agrees to be Beverly's proto type.
At Paul and Gail's:
Mike goes round to start editing the Lassiters video. He tells Paul and Gail that the first thing he edits out will be any background shots of Jane - he can't stand seeing her look so daggy. Gail says she's heard that the only reason Jane is dressing like that is because her mother can't stand to see her daughter looking so pretty. Mike tells her it stinks.
At the hospital:
Charlene is kicking herself for not realising earlier that Lucy was sick. Scott comforts her and says she told him about it and he did nothing either. Helen joins in the pity party muttering on about crying over spilt milk, then wishes she hadn't said that (She tried to make Lucy laugh with this saying a couple of episodes ago). Jim comes back from talking to the doctors, quoting medical words which make everything more confusing. He and Scott have a bit of a row and Helen points out that they're in a hospital - "There are people here who are very sick, and may I remind you that Lucy is one of them."
At Paul and Gail's:
Paul is laughing at Amanda and Madge arguing in the video. He laughs at how rough it is and tells them not to take it so seriously, before noticing that Amanda Harris scrubs up alright. Mike points out that he'd been calling her a horrible person not so long ago, then reminds him that he's married. Gail crows that "That shut you up didn't it.". Creativity is stemmed for a moment when the door goes - it's Rob. He tells Gail he's just dropped in on his way through.
Later:
Rob is unusually quiet while Gail tries to talk to him. Paul comes in in a flap and tells them that his dad just rang about Lucy. He is distressed and goes off to the hospital, leaving Mike and Rob to talk about how she's not a bad kid. Gail is amazed her dad is finally talking and sensing the atmosphere Mike makes a hasty exit. Gail asks Rob if he wants a beer and he asks for a cup of tea instead. She almost dies of shock.
At the Clarkes:
Beverly is interviewing Eileen and Des is teasing her about her answers. Mike comes home and tells them all about Lucy. Beverly grabs her things and shoots off to the hospital.
At the hospital:
Paul is impatiently pacing about worrying about how long everything is taking. Beverly comes up and Jim remarks "That daughter of mine seems determined to keep us seeing each other." Beverly asks what the situation is and Paul angrily tells her they are sitting there asking exactly the same thing. She promises to go and find out what's going on.
At Paul and Gail's:
Rob tells Gail he's stopped drinking because he's not getting any younger. He tossed a coin and it told him to stop. Gail yells at him because she's been so worried about him and he shouts back that she stopped caring about him long before he left - he'd become nothing but a burden to her. She asks if the letter he left behind was some kind of test, then tells him Henry hadn't given her the letter in time. He laughs and the ice between them melts a little. Gail fills him in on what happened to the garage and lets him know Jim is thinking of starting up a new workshop. He says he'll stay the night but isn't promising he can stick around.
At the hospital:
Beverly comes back but has no real news - they don't know what they're dealing with but are carrying out tests. It seems there is pressure being exerted on the brain but they don't know what's causing it. Jim presses further and Beverly reluctantly tells him they suspect Lucy has a brain tumour.
At Paul and Gail's:
Gail is shocked at the news about Lucy. Paul tells her how worried Jim is, then asks where her dad is. She tells him he's staying the night and Paul asks whether that means they have to play musical bedrooms again? Yep. Gail tells him what Rob said about not staying around, but she's hopeful he'll change his mind once he talks about the workshop with Jim. Paul advises her not to get her hopes up on that one. Jim's got enough on his plate at the moment.
At the Robinsons:
Scott and Charlene go off to tidy up the kitchen and Jim starts tidying up Lucy's blankets. He picks up her slippers and sad piano music plays. He tells Helen he's off for a walk and leaves.
In the kitchen:
Scott is struggling with the washing up. Charlene rubs his back and he sadly talks about how awful he's been to Lucy since she got back from Europe - "I even told everybody what a little snob she was." Charlene comforts him with the fact that he gave her his skateboard, despite the fact that he was clearly holding it the other day when he walked Charlene to work, but this only upsets him more. He turns round to face her, crying, and says he should have given her something that counted, like his time or attention. Now he might never get another chance. Charlene hugs him while he cries, and tells him she knows Lucy will make it. He eventually moves away and says he must have splashed detergent in his eyes, before getting on with the washing up. Wise old woman Charlene isn't convinced and looks at him worriedly.
At the Clarkes:
Des and Daphne are cuddling Jamie and worrying about Lucy. Des thinks they should wrap Jamie in cotton wool but Daphne tells him you can't overprotect a child either.
At the Robinsons:
Jim is still sitting up, looking at Lucy's story book. Helen comes out and tells him she couldn't sleep either. She sits next to him and says they have to be brave for Lucy's sake. Jim tells her he can't see the logic in the situation - his wife, her daughter, died having Lucy and that seemed to be balanced because one life ended, but another began. But if he loses Lucy as well, where is the balance in that? The others are all grown up and Lucy is the last one who needs him. Then he breaks down in tears and cries "But not as much as I need her."
