At the Robinsons:
Gail has run to Helen to unburden herself of her woes. Helen guiltily admits that it was she who let the cat out of the bag, albeit unwittingly. She leaves Gail brooding so she can go and talk to Paul.
At Paul and Gail's:
Paul tells Helen to keep out of things. Helen asks why he doesn't believe that Gail didn't tell Rosemary and he says he knows Gail. He is shocked to find out it was Helen who told her. He is now furious with Helen and says if he'd had time to explain to Rosemary she'd have been fine about it. Helen reminds him that when he was a little boy he'd always admit when he made a mistake - and he's made a whopper about Gail.
At Mrs Mangel's:
Jane asks Amanda why her dad didn't give her money when she left - she thought he was doing well? Amanda doesn't answer and sends her off to get a nail file for her. Harold returns home from church and tells Amanda he's just been to visit Mrs M on his way home. She was a little quiet and he thinks maybe it was because of Madge. He ponders that it might still be because of the fight they had. Amanda asks if Mrs Ramsay often fights with the neighbours and Harold laughs before telling her of course not. Amanda suggests inviting her round for afternoon tea so she can get to know her better and Harold is delighted. He rushes off to invite her. Jane comes back into the room with Amanda's nail file - and a stash of cash she's found in her drawer.
At the Robinsons:
Gail answers the phone to Jim who wants to speak to Paul (Why not try ringing his house then?) He wants him to come and look at a workshop he's thinking of buying. Gail hangs up as Helen and Paul come into the kitchen. Helen leaves the two of them to talk and Paul makes a lame attempt at an apology.
GAIL: You could say that you've been an absolute pig
PAUL: Okay I've been an absolute pig. Anything else?
GAIL: Yes. You could say that you'll trust me in future.
He insists that he does trust her - their marriage is a sign of that. Still not satisfied Gail says he could have said it all with a little more sincerity so he goes down on one knee and apologises again. She smiles and lets Helen out of her room.
At Mrs Mangel's:
Amanda tells Jane that her father used money as a way to stop her coming back to Australia to see Jane - she has now taken what she thought she was deserved so she could come back and they could have a new start. Jane is taken in hook, line and sinker at her promise to stay with her from now on.
At the Ramsays:
Madge tells Harold that if she had afternoon tea with Amanda she thinks she'd choke. Harold lectures about the sermon at church and the prodigal son. Ten hours later he uses the sermon to point out that if Madge had turned the other cheek with Mrs Mangel then she wouldn't be in hospital now. It is her duty to go and see Amanda. Poor Madge is browbeaten into shouting that she'll come to afternoon tea, alright?!
At Mrs Mangels:
Amanda is wondering whether to serve Madge with Sherry or cocktails? (How about both?) Jane tells her Madge and Mr Bishop don't drink, then recounts the tale of Nell and Harold getting drunk on cider. Amanda finds it hilarious, particularly when Harold comes in and insists he never drinks.
On Ramsay Street:
Jim and Beverly have a little kiss after telling each other how much they enjoy each others company. Madge and Helen come up and Madge tells Helen about Amanda pretending to be her to the school caretaker. She's tempted to hit her over the head with the flowers he brought for her but promises Helen she'll be so nice that she'll be dying to get rid of her.
At Mrs Mangel's:
Madge and a very put on posh voice arrive for afternoon tea. She gives Amanda the flowers and tells her they're from Merv. Amanda, with an equally fake laugh, thanks her very much. Obviously this is going to be handbags at dawn but Harold thinks it's going splendidly.
At the workshop:
Helen and Beverly think the workshop is an old heap of junk but Jim thinks it's Paul's opinion that really matters. Paul hates it but goes off with Jim to look inside, leaving Gail to tell Helen and Bev that they've had another row in the car. Paul and Jim come back out, Paul saying that Jim should forget it. Gail announces that Paul's policy is to demolish anything old and Paul nastily tells her to shut up, much to everyone's shock. They row again and Paul asks Jim if he'll drive Gail home, then storms off. Helen says this is ridiculous, fighting over the Waterhole, but Gail says it's much more than that.
At Mrs Mangel's:
Amanda asks Madge if she's ever travelled but isn't impressed with Madge's travels through Australia, thinking only OS (overseas) travel counts. It knocks off the rough ages and gives one sophistication apparently. Madge cattily comments that it can also give one "pseudo-sophistication", then one might sound quite pretentious, mightn't one?
At the Robinsons:
Helen is apologising to Beverly for Paul and Gail's fight. She tells her that if things got serious between her and Jim she'd be happy to move out for Beverly to move in.
At Paul and Gail's:
Paul and Gail are talking and discuss what is really going wrong. Gail tells him that she thought they were entering into a partnership, but he sees himself as the senior partner. He says of course - he makes the decisions and she backs him up. She can't do that though and thinks she could help him more if he'd just listen to her. Grudgingly he agrees and says he doesn't want to walk away from the marriage - apart from his family she's the best friend he's got.
At Mrs Mangel's:
A silent war has broken out between Amanda and Madge. Harold is on the phone to the Reverend and has to leave. Jane has buzzed off too.
AMANDA: Alone at last.
MADGE: Yes. Time for a little straight talking after all the fencing we've been doing.
AMANDA: Lets start with my mother. Did you really drive her to that heart attack?
MADGE: (Very politely) No. I did not.
AMANDA: I think you did. I also think that Harold is far too much of a gentleman to be caught up with a woman of your class.
MADGE: Oh. Now you're showing your true colours aren't you madam.
As Jane comes in unnoticed Madge stands up and calls Amanda a devious, rotten mother who should keep her claws off Harold unless she wants to end up in hospital as well. Jane is outraged and yells that first she thought with her nan and now she's threatening her mother! Madge turns round in shock and Amanda grins smugly over her shoulder.
