Lassiters Hotel
Chloe brings Harlow an 'apology snack' from Harold's to thank her for her help before. But Harlow says it was no trouble - the quarterly projections are already in Chloe's inbox. Terese overhears them and congratulates Harlow on a great job. She then calls Jesse over to the front desk so she can get more information for his room, including his date of birth. When Jesse says it's the first of May, 1996, Terese gets a funny look on her face. Jesse asks if something is wrong, but Terese brushes it aside and keeps working.
Harold's Café
Later, via a chat between Terese, Susan and Melanie, we find out the first of May 1996 was meant to be Josh and Imogen's due date but they arrived a bit earlier than scheduled. It's shaken Terese, but Melanie says it can be tied to "Angel signs", which can be messages from loved ones who have crossed over. Susan looks sceptical but Terese is interested in hearing more. Melanie tells her Jesse has a "builder number", which means he's the type of person to piece things together. Terese says she's found herself wanting to help Jesse with his family situation, but Melanie replies he might have been sent to help Terese instead. "Or maybe it's just a mother's instinct to care," Susan adds. Terese says she cares, but seeing Jesse brings up a lot of memories and emotions.
SUSAN: Maybe the reason you're drawn to help him is because you still have feelings around Josh's death to work through? And helping Jesse is a way for you to take one more step in the healing process.
Lassiters Complex
Terese walks through the complex, lost in her own memories and feelings about Josh. There are flashbacks to the time Terese told Josh the West Waratah Star wanted to offer him a sponsorship deal, Terese and Brad finding Josh trapped in the rubble of the hotel, Josh dying and Terese tearfully wondering how she's supposed to live her life without her son. Roxy runs into Terese and snaps her out of her reverie. Roxy can see Terese is rattled and says she doesn't know how her aunt is able to be so kind to Jesse by offering him a hotel room after what happened. Roxy says no one would blame Terese if she didn't want to be the bigger person, but Terese replies she's just trying to do the right thing.
The Waterhole
Karl, Toadie and Hendrix are all eating lunch together when Susan joins them. Susan carefully says she ran into Melanie at Harold's, which gains Sheila's attention as she cleans in the background. Toadie says Mel's had no luck finding a new job just yet. Sheila 'helpfully' suggests Toadie ring some of Melanie's old bosses to ask if they want her back, but Toadie thinks that would be a bit weird. Swapping a look of alarm with Karl, Susan says that she's sure Melanie will have luck soon. When Toadie steps away to take a work call, Susan and Karl immediately scold Sheila and Hendrix for hinting things to Toadie. "I'm not!" Hendrix protests through a mouthful of sandwich. But Sheila says she's had a re-think and doesn't feel right about keeping Toadie in the dark.
SHEILA: Something dodgy's going on and he needs to know.
KARL: Has it occurred to you the reason we're staying silent is because there's nothing in it?
SHEILA: A restraining order is nothing?!
Hendrix continues to eat his sandwich in horrified awe as Susan harshly whispers for Sheila to keep her voice down.
SHEILA: I thought you two were supposed to be family with Toadie? Y'know, pseudo parents.
SUSAN: Of course we are.
SHEILA: Well what kind of parents are you that keep something like this from their child? Unless there's something you're not telling me?
KARL: Yeah we all know how you handle things like this in your family.
SHEILA: Excuse me?
KARL: You tell everyone everything regardless of the fallout. How has that worked out for you in the past by the way?
SUSAN: It's just not how we handle things, Sheila, so please just stay quiet.
The Waterhole/Number 30
Later on, Melanie has joined Toadie at the bar and is offering advice about eating nuts as they're a natural mood booster. While she nicks to the loo, Toadie calls Mackenzie, who has been doing some uni work at home. She promises him she'll head into the office soon, but Toad tells her not to worry. He'd like Melanie to work the rest of the day as she could really use the money after losing out on another job prospect. Mackenzie feels sorry for Melanie, and Toad says she's trying to put on a brave face but he thinks it's really getting to her. After they hang up, Melanie returns from the bathroom. "Come on, let's go grab some nuts," she smiles at Toadie. Standing behind the bar, Sheila and Roxy watch them leave.
SHEILA: The cheek of Susan and Karl not telling me everything because they think I can't keep a secret.
ROXY: You literally just finished blabbing to me.
SHEILA: That was out of frustration.
Roxy thinks the Kennedys might not have said anything because they only know as much as Sheila does and didn't think it was worth it. "Susan is a bit of a lamb when it comes to digging the dirt," Sheila concedes, and adds that it also explains why she hasn't told Toadie the truth yet. Roxy asks Sheila what she's going to do about it. "What do you think?" Sheila smirks, looking like she's ready to take gold in the busybody Olympics.
Lassiters Hotel
Terese finds Harlow and a sullen-looking Jesse in the foyer and asks what's wrong. Harlow tells Terese that Shay just sent an email to Jesse, placing the blame solely on him for the collapse of the Quill Hotel. Terese thinks that's absurd. Jesse says that Shay also said all of the staff cuts at the hotel are on him too, which makes him feel horrible. Terese asks to see the email and tells Jesse that none of it falls on him, but Jesse says he was the one who conned his family into buying the dodgy land. Terese replies that one deal isn't going to bring down a whole business - the land sale was just the final straw in a history of mismanagement. While Jesse continues to look distraught, Harlow appears as though she's forming an idea.
Number 30
Mackenzie jokes with Hendrix that she's about to take out a good samaritan award because she just edited Melanie's CV and sent it out to every big law firm, whether they're hiring or not. Alarmed, Hendrix asks if it was the CV that said Melanie worked for Justin Buke, face falling when Mackenzie confirms it was. Mackenzie is worried when Hendrix says they have to get all the CVs back she sent out. Mackenzie wants to know what's going on to make him look so stressed.
The Quill Hotel
Shay isn't pleased when Terese calls in for a visit, especially since she's still dealing with the fallout of the dud information Terese convinced Jesse to pass on. But Terese retorts that she didn't convince Jesse of anything, it was all his own doing, but he wasn't thrilled about betraying anyone in the long run. Terese says that Jesse's devastated Shay's cut him out of the family, but Shay coolly replies that he was never actually part of it to begin with.
TERESE: Really? Because I think that he thinks he is. And I'm sure his brother Archie does too.
SHAY: Do you know how much our business suffered because of his mother?
TERESE: Yes, yes I do! We have all suffered at the hands of Julie. Shay, you have a chance to change the story here. Don't punish Jesse for something that's not his fault.
Number 28
Karl and Susan are chatting about their dinner plans when Sheila barges in and says they should do something with prawns. She gleefully informs them she found out Melanie planted prawns in Dr. Buke's car, which led to the restraining order. But it soon becomes clear to Sheila that Susan and Karl already knew this information. Susan asks how Sheila found out and is horrified when Sheila says she went straight to the source. "Do you have any idea what you've done?" Susan snaps, earning a baffled look from Sheila.
Lassiters Hotel
Melanie is trying to encourage Toadie to walk around the lake with her to boost their energy when they run into Mackenzie. Acting weird, Mackenzie asks if they've had to deal with any dramas today, but Melanie says she's just "walking off the job hunting blues". Avoiding eye contact, Mackenzie wonders if those blues have anything to do with unusual emails or phone calls, making Toadie and Melanie very suspicious. Toadie asks what's going on, but before Mackenzie can answer, a furious Anna Buke storms up to them. "I thought we made it very clear we wanted you out of our lives!" Anna shouts, leaving Melanie shocked to see her. Anna says that her and Justin have worked very hard to get their marriage back on track, and there's no way Melanie's going to push her way back in. Mackenzie looks nervous, while Toadie has no idea what's happening. Anna can't believe Melanie listed Justin on her CV, but Melanie insists she didn't use that resume. Mackenzie attempts to cut into the conversation and explain her role in the misunderstanding, but Anna and Melanie are too busy arguing to hear her.
ANNA: I've been personally contacted twice as well. First by a school principal then by a bar manager.
MELANIE: I have no idea why anyone would contact you about me! I promise I don't!
ANNA: That is not going to wash. Not after everything you've done to me. Just destroying my life once, was that not enough for you?
TOADIE: I'm sorry, just who exactly are you?
ANNA: I am someone who refuses to go through the hell this woman inflicted on my life again.
Hearing the commotion, Sheila races over.
MELANIE: Anna I swear I do not want any part of your life! Or Justin's!
ANNA: The restraining order is still in place. One phone call from me and the police will be on your doorstep.
SHEILA: Oh, I can explain-
MACKENZIE: It's my fault-
TOADIE: I think you need to tell me exactly what's going on.
Melanie looks quite overwhelmed.
The Quill Hotel
Terese tells Shay they actually have a lot in common as they've both been wronged by Julie Quill. Shay says they both also love to win and knows Terese is probably loving watching them crash and burn. Sighing, Terese tells her to take her business hat off for once and understand that it's actually about family. If Shay wants to preserve the Quill legacy as much as she claims, then cutting Jesse out and destroying his life isn't the way to do it. "The only legacy you're going to be saving is Julie's," Terese adds. Shay gets a phone call, so Terese leaves her to it, but it appears as though Terese's words might have actually struck a chord with Shay.
Lassiters Hotel
Harlow is working on the laptop and asks Jesse to tell her everything he knows about who's on the Quill board. Jesse asks why and Harlow says it's a way to make things right with his family, and give Terese and Paul a big win along the way. Chloe interrupts them to ask Harlow for an answer to one small question about the leave request forms. But Harlow pretty much brushes Chloe off and advises her to look at a tutorial online as she's too busy working on something important for Terese. Curious, Chloe asks what Harlow's working on, but Harlow just says it's big picture brand stuff. Chloe pretends she's fine about Harlow's dismissal, but throws her a suspicious glance as she leaves.
Lassiters Complex
Hendrix tells Mackenzie he's called the rest of the firms she sent the CV out to and got them to delete the email after he lied and said the CV file was corrupt with a virus. They return to where Melanie is standing with Toadie and Sheila. Melanie promises she'll answer all of Toadie's questions just as soon as she works out how this all happened.
MELANIE: (upset) You poked around in a part of my life that I put behind me. Why?
SHEILA: I was just looking out for Toadie.
TOADIE: By snooping behind Melanie's back?
MACKENZIE: I didn't poke, I just re-did your CV and sent it off.
MELANIE: Without telling me.
MACKENZIE: Now I realise why you didn't want that and I should have listened. I'm so sorry.
MELANIE: Sorry isn't good enough.
SHEILA: Oh hang on, this is your dirty laundry. And as far as that Doctor Buke thing goes, well I didn't start that!
MELANIE: No, you didn't. A 'school principal' did. And no guesses who that is.
Lassiters Office
Terese tells Chloe and Harlow that she just paid a visit to Shay Quill in the hopes that she'll stop blaming Jesse for all of her mistakes. Terese says Shay wasn't too happy about it but she thinks she got through to her a little bit. Harlow thinks it's fortunate timing Terese has reached out to Shay because she's come up with an idea that might solve a lot of problems. Harlow says she's looked into the Quill's finances and she's figured out a way they can help the bounce back financially.
HARLOW: I think Lassiters should invest. Manage their recovery.
CHLOE: The Quill group is massive.
HARLOW: And the Melbourne location is the only one that they still hold the majority share. It just needs a revamp.
TERESE: So that's what we'd invest in?
HARLOW: That and they are in desperate need of new leadership. Jesse says that Shay's basically imploding.
Terese admits it's a big leap, but Harlow reminds them Paul always says that you need to make your own opportunities.
The Waterhole
Terese, Chloe and Harlow have moved to the pub for a drink. Chloe says that Harlow's definitely Paul's granddaughter - the pitch she just gave them was awesome. Terese agrees that it was well researched and could be a great opportunity. Harlow wonders if that means Terese is going to go through with it. Terese says there are still a lot of hoops to jump through - most of them emotional - but if they do get the finance they could actually turn things around. Jesse walks over to the bar and gives them a smile and a wave. Chloe tells Harlow that if they're looking into it seriously, she can help her out with the investment plan, but Harlow replies that Chloe's already got a lot going on and she can handle it alone.
TERESE: Well you've certainly proved that weaving this deal together in your downtime. (Jokingly to Chloe) We should be careful, she'll put us out of our jobs!
Chloe paints on a smile but actually looks quite concerned this might be the case.
Number 28
Susan and Karl are both trying to reach Toadie and Melanie on the phone but are having no luck. Susan's frustrated that things have blown up so much, especially since she doesn't like petty gossip to begin with. Melanie suddenly storms into the house, with Toadie and Hendrix following her.
MELANIE: Maybe you should have thought of that before you decided to ruin my life!
SUSAN: Melanie I am so sorry for everything.
MELANIE: No you're not! You have never approved of me and Toadie being together. Neither of you!
KARL: No, no, not true!
TOADIE: (trying to placate Melanie) Maybe just dial it down a bit, babe.
MELANIE: You think he deserves better.
SUSAN: No!
MELANIE: Well he does deserve better - better friends! Not ones that snoop and judge and scheme, all for their own entertainment. You make me sick.
Melanie charges back out. Toadie gives a stern look towards Karl and Susan.
TOADIE: I have no idea what you've done, but I really wish you'd come to me first.
He follows Melanie out the door leaving Susan, Karl and Hendrix feeling awful about how things went down.
