No 28
Susan and Hendrix are chatting; Susan's feeling guilty after Melanie tore strips off her. Karl comes in and says Sheila's dodging his calls, so has no idea what she said to Melanie to prompt her outburst. Susan's worried about Toadie's response.
SUSAN: Maybe it wasn't such a good idea to keep this from him (...) The look on his face when he left - I think we've really messed things up here.
KARL: No, no, things will calm down. Hopefully he's getting the full story from Melanie as we speak (...) Once Toadie has the full picture, he'll realise we were only acting in his best interests.
Hendrix doesn't look so sure.
The Flamingo Bar
Kyle and Roxy evidently have nothing better to do than hanging out at the fire pit, spying on Amy and Levi's latest date, which is just wrapping up. We can't hear what Amy and Levi are saying, but neither look to be having much fun. Kyle attempts to predict from a distance what Amy's saying.
KYLE: She's saying she had a great time.
ROXY: She may be saying 'great', but her face is saying 'dead on arrival'.
Roxy declares a 'massive cringe factor' as Levi attempts to go in for a kiss with Amy, but it doesn't quite come off. Kyle wills Levi to 'have another crack', but this time he goes for an awkward hug instead, which Amy doesn't look keen on. Kyle and Roxy wince.
ROXY: I think it's done. And I also think we should settle our bet.
KYLE: What? No way! Ned had a bad date too - we don't have a winner yet.
Levi heads home, and Amy flops down opposite Kyle and Roxy.
AMY: Well, that was a disaster.
ROXY (unconvincingly): Oh, really? We didn't really see.
AMY: (eyebrows)
ROXY: Maybe we did notice a little bit.
KYLE: You guys have been off your game lately.
AMY (sighs): That's what happens when serious questions get asked. Ned wants to make it official, with him... and Levi.
ROXY: Wait, what?!
KYLE: Into a threesome?
AMY: Nah. It's a poly (...) Like, I would have two official boyfriends.
ROXY: Two for the price of one. You go, girl.
Kyle looks less enthusiastic!
AMY: But I said no! I mean, I really like them - like, more and more every day. But I dunno, to make it official - it's just a bridge too far.
Amy explains that in theory, she's reverted just to casual dating with Levi and Ned - but it seems like the spark has gone following the polyamory discussion. Roxy says it could still come back, but Amy's worried it's gone forever.

Melanie is complaining to Toadie and Mackenzie about Susan's interference in her private life. Mackenzie's feeling bad for her own role in the Justin Buke saga, by sending out her version of Mel's CV without permission. Mel agrees Mackenzie was wrong to send the CV out, but adds that at least she was trying to help her, rather than 'gathering information to attack my relationship' like Susan.
MACKENZIE: I know it looks bad, but Susan isn't that kind of person.
MELANIE: Well, what's she up to, then? Research for my unauthorised biography? (!)
Amy comes in, and asks what the drama's about.
TOADIE (to Melanie): Actually, you know what? I would like to know, too. I will give you the benefit of the doubt, but you need to talk me through this.
MELANIE: What Anna Buke said I did -
TOADIE: Destroying her marriage.
MELANIE: It wasn't like that. Her husband told me that their relationship was over.
TOADIE: So you did have a relationship with Justin Buke?
MELANIE: He used our affair to punish Anna, then made out that I was a lunatic. It was humiliating. I thought I'd left it behind me until Susan started trawling.
TOADIE: What about the other stuff that she said, about you being a stalker? And the prawns, what's that about?
But for Melanie can answer, Nell comes in. She's having trouble sleeping. Melanie takes her back to bed to read her a story, but Toadie says they'll have to continue their conversation later - and once Mel and Nell have gone, he admits to Amy and Mackenzie that he still doesn't know what's going on.
Lassiter's Complex
The next morning outside the pub, Ned and Levi are comparing notes on their recent dates with Amy, which both went terribly. Roxy and Kyle are with them. Ned and Levi are both concerned that their time dating Amy has come to an end. Sheila turns up, and makes little effort to disguise her joy at hearing this.
SHEILA: I think it's the best thing that could've happened.
ROXY: And there it is!
KYLE: Gran's a real pain in the butt when she's right.
SHEILA (walking away): I heard that!
LEVI: Look, it's my fault, man. This whole fun, casual thing made me drop my guard. The next thing I know - boom, feels.
NED: We're in the same boat.
ROXY: Yeah, all aboard the SS Unrequited Love.
NED: You know, maybe we should be the ones to cut our losses. Call it quits.
LEVI: Yeah. Waiting for Amy is doing my head in.
Harold's Café
While grabbing a coffee, Karl and Susan run into Toadie. He's still very frosty with them.
SUSAN: I'm truly sorry. I've handled things terribly.
KARL: Honestly, we were torn about disclosing Melanie's affair. It was in the past - we didn't want to jeopardise your future.
SUSAN: Yeah, we loved seeing you two so happy.
TOADIE: You set me up so that a stranger could publicly rip into my girlfriend.
SUSAN: We had no idea that Sheila was going to contact -
TOADIE: Sheila wouldn't have known anything about this if it wasn't for you. I feel so stupid! The whole street has been talking about me and Melanie behind our backs.
SUSAN: At least now you know the truth, and it's up to you how you want to deal with it.
TOADIE: It's not even about the truth. It's about how you two have handled things. That's the reason why this whole thing has blown up.
KARL: Jarrod, we did it because we care about you.
SUSAN: Yes, you know how much we love you.
TOADIE: Well, you've got a funny way of showing it, haven't you?
He walks off, leaving them looking guilty.
Lassiter's Complex
Amy has been summoned by Ned and Levi.
AMY: What?! You're dumping me? Both of you?
LEVI: We didn't actually use the 'D' word.
NED: There's no point in dragging this out when we obviously like you more than you like us.
LEVI: It's not fair on any of us.
AMY: Well, what happened? It was literally fine a minute ago. Surely we can figure something out. We were having so much fun!
LEVI: Yeah, we were, but... we're not anymore.
NED: We both want something more than you do.
AMY (sighs): Well, actually, I've kind of developed feelings for both of you. I mean, I can see myself in a relationship with either of you, it's just... not at the same time (...) Polyamory is just still... no. I just feel like it would open a whole world of pain for me.
NED: Well, then you have to choose.
LEVI: Okay. If that's what needs to happen.
AMY: What, you guys would be okay with that?
NED: It's fair. Look, if it's not me, no hard feelings.
LEVI: Same. Hundred percent.
Amy looks conflicted.
Eden Hills University
Mackenzie admits to Hendrix that she's feeling so guilty about sending out Melanie's CV that she can't focus on her uni assignment with Nora, her classmate. Mackenzie wants to find a way to make it up to Toadie and Mel; she doesn't disbelieve Anna Buke, but thinks Mel has paid too highly for her past mistakes.
MACKENZIE: One mistake can't knock you out of contention for happiness, not forever. How do I remind Toadie of that?
Hendrix shrugs, but Mackenzie has a brainwave. She asks Hendrix to organise a romantic brunch for Toadie and Mel. Hendrix agrees.
HENDRIX: But only because I like you so much.
The Waterhole
Susan is expressing her frustration to Sheila about her having stirred the pot with Melanie, while Karl tries to keep things calm, saying they need to focus on fixing things with Toadie. At this point, Melanie walks in, closely followed by Hendrix. Karl and Susan start apologising to Melanie, but she's not interested in hearing it.
KARL: Is there anything we can do?
MELANIE: Maybe just stay out of my way for a while, Karl. In the meantime, Hendrix and Mackenzie have offered to do a special brunch for Toadie and I (...) Hopefully it'll help us get past all the damage that Susan's caused.
Sheila makes herself scarce, and while Mel's at the bar, Hendrix quietly apologises to Karl and Susan, saying he's not taking sides by making brunch - Mackenzie asked him as a favour. Susan and Karl assure him it's fine. But Karl takes Hendrix aside for a quiet word.
KARL: This brunch - could you just keep an ear open, you know? Let us know how it goes?
HENDRIX: What do you mean?
KARL: Well, we're not really sure how we stand with Toadie at the moment.
HENDRIX: So you want me to spy on them?
KARL: No, no - no. Well, nothing overt (...) We just want to find out if we're still on the Christmas card list. Please?
No 30
Hendrix is playing waiter as he prepares brunch for Melanie and a very awkward-looking Toadie. Mel's impressed by Hendrix's menu plan, and says if he ever wants to vacate the 'KGB stronghold next door' he can come and live with her and cook in lieu of rent! Hendrix leaves them to talk.
TOADIE: You still haven't told me what's going on.
MELANIE: I told you not to worry!
TOADIE: I'd rather know the truth. The things Anna said - stalking, and a restraining order - they are serious.
MELANIE: I know. I know it is. It's just... embarrassing.
TOADIE: Just give me a chance to understand, hey?
Melanie agrees.
Lassiter's Complex
Amy has brought Nell and Hugo for dinner at the pub, prior to taking them to their playdate. Sheila is hanging around, and makes a cheap jibe at Amy's expense about her dating habits, which is not even witty enough to record here.
AMY (curtly): I'll let you know when I'm ready to order, thanks, Sheila.
SHEILA: Oh, don't know what you want? What a surprise (!)
As Sheila walks off, Amy shows Nell the menu, and asks her what she wants to eat.
NELL: Pancakes and spaghetti.
AMY: Two meals at the same time? I think you should pick one.
NELL: I want both.
AMY (empathising!): But which one do you like better?
NELL: I like them both for different reasons.
AMY: What if people think you're a guts?
NELL: I don't care.
AMY: Well, you know what? You can have both.
Amy smiles as she considers how Nell's take on this has a bearing on her romantic dilemma!
No 30
In the sun room, Melanie explains herself to Toadie, while Hendrix keeps a watchful eye and ear open from the kitchen, as per Karl's request!
MELANIE: Getting involved with Justin was wrong. But I realised too late he was just using me to punish Anna (...) Their marriage had got rocky, things turned nasty, and she had no problem embarrassing him in public. I was the one who ended it. Why would I do that if I was gonna stalk him?
TOADIE: Then, why the restraining order?
MELANIE: I'd organised to go to Justin's to drop his stuff off. He told me that Anna wouldn't be there.
TOADIE: But she was.
MELANIE: Justin pretended he had no idea what I was doing there and [that] I must've followed him.
TOADIE: Ah, what about the prawns?
MELANIE: Mm. Not my finest hour. But Anna was going around telling everyone that I was a nutcase, and it hurt. So I decided to show her what crazy really looked like.
TOADIE: Manure on the doorstep, and prawns in the car. You really know how to get 'em, don't ya?
MELANIE: Childish, I know. But it did make me feel a little bit better.
TOADIE: They've really put you through the wringer, haven't they? I'm sorry that this has happened to you (...) and then Susan and Sheila just give you a big fat reminder.
MELANIE: I know you and Karl and Susan are really close, but when I think about having to be around them now... Have they always interfered like this?
TOADIE: I'd like to say that it was a one-off, but they have form.
Overhearing all this, Hendrix taps out a text message for Karl, which says, 'Mel's trying to get Toadie to turn on you.' Unfortunately, he accidentally sends it to Toadie instead! Toadie goes into the kitchen and shows Hendrix the message.
HENDRIX: That was meant for Karl.
Toadie looks annoyed.
Harold's Café
Amy, Levi and Ned reconvene to discuss her dating dilemma.
LEVI: So... have you made your decision?
AMY: I have. But not between you. I choose you both.
NED: You want to keep on with the casual thing?
AMY: I want to try... the polyamorous relationship.
LEVI: Look, I know we pushed you to choose, but if you need more time -
AMY: I don't.
NED: I thought you were a hard 'no' on that.
AMY: I was, but... look, I dunno how this is gonna work, but it's no reason not to try. I have feelings for you both. Proper feelings... for different reasons.
NED: Okay... well, I'm in.
AMY: Really?
LEVI: Me too.
AMY (nervous): Alright. So we're doing this.
NED: We are.
No 28
Toadie is having a go at Karl for 'sending a spy to dig the dirt on my girlfriend'.
KARL: I was just so worried when you were so cold to us.
TOADIE: So instead of speaking to me, you recruited Hendrix?!
Susan emerges from the bedroom.
KARL: I just wanted to mend things. I didn't know where we stood.
TOADIE: Well, you can stand as far away as possible for all I care!
Susan tries to apologise, but Toadie says they never learn, and have hurt Melanie enough already.
KARL: You're defending Melanie?
TOADIE: Of course I am! She has been attacked from all sides with no cause. She had an affair - yes, she knows that's wrong. And you two of all people should understand that.
SUSAN: What we did, we did out of concern for you and the kids.
TOADIE: Okay, well, then, maybe it's not your place to worry about that anymore.
SUSAN: No, Toadie -
TOADIE: No. I think from this point on, you can just respect our boundaries.
He walks out.
Eden Hills University
Mackenzie is on the phone to Hendrix, and is concerned to hear about his faux pas with the text to Toadie. But he seems to report that Toadie and Mel are none the worse for it, despite Toadie's anger with Karl and Susan.
Mackenzie rejoins her friend Nora to work on their assignment. She asks how Nora's legal internship went.
NORA: I shadowed one of the partners. He seemed great at first.
MACKENZIE: But then?
NORA: I heard he had an affair with an assistant, about a year ago. He felt really creepy after that.
MACKENZIE: Oh. Awkward.
NORA: Everyone said she was a nutbar. Possessive. Apparently, she laughed like a seal.
MACKENZIE: ... You weren't interning for Justin Buke, were you?
NORA: No, Michael Cousens.
Mackenzie is shocked...
The Waterhole
The polyamorous trio raise a toast to their new relationship, while Kyle and Roxy watch from a distance.
NED: We should probably have a code of conduct.
AMY: Absolutely. I mean, we can't get through this without rules and boundaries.
Meanwhile, Roxy explains to a confused Kyle that this officially means it's no longer a competition between Ned and Levi - they're both in a relationship with Amy.
KYLE: How do you go from casual fun, to two serious boyfriends? It's a bit nutty.
ROXY: Polyamory is not nutty, it's just different. And I'm all for it.
KYLE (lying): Yeah, me too! For sure. Just... too bad our bet's off.
ROXY: It doesn't have to be. We could both win.
They agree on a mutual massage as winnings; but meanwhile, Kyle is worried about what will happen when Sheila finds out about Levi's new relationship. Roxy agrees it won't be pretty.
No 30
Mackenzie arrives home, to find Melanie raving about Hendrix's 'culinary genius'. Toadie has just gone to get some ice-cream to have with dessert. Melanie thanks Mackenzie for organising the brunch, saying it's really helped her and Toadie to get back on track. But Mackenzie is looking very worried, and Hendrix asks what's wrong.
MACKENZIE: I know about the affairs, Melanie. Not just Justin Buke. All of them.
HENDRIX: How many more?
MELANIE (flustered): Who has been filling your head with malicious gossip?
MACKENZIE: My friend from uni told me about Michael Cousens. Then I called all the firms that you didn't want on your CV. You had affairs at all of them. A lot of them ended badly as well.
MELANIE (flustered): Well, you can't just believe what some receptionist says! And why is any of this your business?
MACKENZIE: Toadie's my family. And even if you were the victim of Anna and Justin, how do you explain all the others?
MELANIE (upset): Please don't tell Toadie! We're happy again. And I don't know whether we could make it through another issue.
MACKENZIE: You have to know, Melanie, that this is going to come out, one way or another. Tell Toadie before he finds out from someone else.
Toadie walks through the door, with ice-cream.
TOADIE: Don't worry, I spoke with Karl and Susan. They know whose side I'm on... What have I just walked in on?!
Everyone looks sheepish.
