- Elly finally telling Mark he isn't the father of her baby
Number 24
Mark slowly drags his hands out of Elly's grasp and stares at her, dumbfounded. Elly tearfully tells him that she went to the hospital for further testing and realised the pregnancy test she'd originally taken was wrong.
ELLY: I really wanted to tell you; I knew you'd be devastated and I was looking for the right moment. And then you said you thought you'd never be able to touch me again.
MARK: How does that have anything to do with it?
ELLY: Because that's the night it happened. After you said that to me. Mark, I was a mess. I wasn't thinking clearly and I genuinely thought we had no hope.
MARK: (incredulous) So you went out and slept with someone? Who is he? Is it someone I know?
ELLY: ... It's Shaun Watkins.
MARK: Finn's brother?!
ELLY: I never meant to hurt you like this.
Mark stares at Elly, in total disbelief at how his life has just imploded.
Number 26
Paul gives Jimmy a big hug, thrilled to see his grandson. Terese comments to Gary that he's gone all out for Amy, wondering if it's a special birthday, but Gary and Jimmy guiltily dodge the question. While Gary rushes off to greet Leo and Jimmy is sent on an errand, Paul mutters to Terese that something suspicious is going on. Leo and Paul exchange their usual 'we're still feuding and being around each other is awkward' look. Sheila gets on Gary's case about making sure Kyle arrives at the party before Amy, so Gary pretends he's going to sort it out.
The Waterhole
Amy catches Kyle out and 'innocently' wonders if he has somewhere else to be, eventually telling him she knows what he's hiding.
KYLE: (startled) Dad told you?
AMY: He didn't need to say anything it was so obvious.
KYLE: I wanted to say something earlier. It all got so complicated.
AMY: Yeah you're telling me. I don't usually like surprises but for this I'll make an exception.
Kyle's mood deflates; he and Amy aren't on the same page. Amy asks Kyle if they can pretend they never spoke to keep the integrity of the surprise intact. Kyle acts a bit weird so Amy says she knows things have been strange between him and Gary, but his dad truly cares about him: "We both do." Kyle replies that he just wants Amy to be happy.
Number 24
Mark sits quietly, processing his thoughts, while Elly explains that she met Shaun at a bar but didn't know who he was until Finn's hearing, "That's why I ran out." She goes on to say that it only happened one time and Shaun knows he's the father, but he doesn't want to raise a child, he wanted them to. This hits another raw nerve in Mark.
ELLY: He promised to go back to Switzerland and leave me alone if... If I convinced Karl, Susan and Bea into letting Finn stay with them. That meant you and I had the chance to be a family. Mark I wanted to tell you so bad, but it was one lie after another and everything was out of control.
MARK: Right, so the father knows, BUT I DIDN'T DESERVE THE TRUTH?
ELLY: I did it for the sake of my baby. But Mark, I can't lie to you anymore.
Mark storms out the door and Elly races after him.
Ramsay Street
Elly chases Mark down the street and runs in front of him to get him to stop and listen. She cries, telling him she just wants to explain herself further.
MARK: We have a twelve-week ultrasound on our fridge, but you weren't even twelve weeks then. Is that even your baby on the fridge? (Elly shakes her head) Where did it come from then? WHERE DID IT COME FROM?
Elly hunches over in more tears, knowing how awful the truth is going to be for him.
ELLY: It's Caitlin's.
Mark closes his eyes, in pure dismay and grief over what Elly's done. Desperate, Elly tries to wrap her arms around Mark so he'll keep listening to her.
ELLY: I know, I'm sorry; I know it's the worst thing I could have done. I've betrayed you, I've betrayed Sonya...
MARK: Get away from me.
ELLY: No!
MARK: (disentangles himself) Get away from me before I do something I regret.
Elly has a breakdown as Mark walks away from her.
Number 28
Karl asks Susan if he should give Mark a call to see if he and Elly want to join them for lunch. Susan says they might be going to the party at #26, which makes Finn feel guilty the Kennedys and Bea weren't invited because of him. Bea thinks that now Harry's been caught the neighbours might give Finn more of a chance, but Finn doesn't think it'll be that easy. Karl warns Finn that he has to be honest with them and inform them if there are any further changes in his memory. Finn promises, not wanting to let them down. Everyone's alarmed when Elly suddenly walks through the door, sobbing her heart out.
The Waterhole
Aaron thanks David for meeting him; he wasn't sure if David was going to answer his texts. David says Clive called him into the hospital. Aaron asks if he's in trouble.
DAVID: Well I can keep my job, but my role as part of Finn's mental health team is under review.
AARON: I'm sorry, I didn't mean to put your career on the line. I just...
DAVID: Yeah, well, this isn't something I can just forget.
Their conversation is cut short when Aaron sees Mark come in looking terrible. They go over to the bar and ask what's wrong, utterly gobsmacked when Mark tells them Shaun's the father of Elly's baby. David quietly leaves for Amy's party so Aaron can take care of his brother. "I'm losing another baby," Mark murmurs. Aaron puts an arm around Mark and rests his head on his shoulder.
Number 28
Finn listens from the kitchen while Elly finishes telling her family what happened. She adds that she didn't want to lose her husband, but she was waking up every day fearing that the stress was affecting her baby. Bea and Susan appear empathetic (Karl not as much), but Bea doesn't understand why she told Finn and not her family. Finn says he's only known for a week but he worked it out on his own.
FINN: I really wanted to tell you guys but it wasn't my story to tell. Plus I felt guilty. I was kind of involved in the whole deal Elly made with Shaun.
BEA: What deal?
Elly buries her face in her hands, horrified, and bursts into a fresh round of tears.
BEA: Elly what is he talking about?
ELLY: Um... Shaun needed to know Finn had somewhere safe to go. He promised to keep my secret and leave if I convinced you guys to let Finn stay here.
Susan, Karl and Bea are hugely taken aback, vocalising their indignation. Bea starts yelling at her sister for her deception but Susan quietens her down before angrily telling Elly to explain herself.
Number 26
Gary takes Shane aside in the kitchen for a quiet word, thanking him for coming to the party considering they haven't always been 'besties'. Shane looks a bit awkward but smiles at Gary.
SHANE: Mate, I've got to say watching you make dumb choices over and over and over... you don't make it easy on yourself, do you? But you remind me of, well, me when I was younger before I got my act together. And it looks like you're doing that now too so good on you. (He lifts his beer) Here's to you and making good decisions!
Gary smiles and returns the cheers just as Jimmy yells out that his mum's out the front. Everyone races around to hide, yelling "Surprise!" when Amy walks through the door. Gary can immediately tell she'd figured out the birthday party element - but Amy truly is surprised when Jimmy appears from the kitchen. She rushes over to give her son a cuddle and tells Gary he's amazing. While Amy and Jimmy are catching up, Sheila brings up Kyle again to Gary but becomes concerned when Gary dodges another chat with her.
Number 26 Backyard
Jimmy tells Amy and Paul that he really misses them, but he's been having fun spending time with his dad and he loves his new school. Amy says they miss him too but the most important thing is that he's happy.
AMY: Just as long as you don't lose your Aussie accent.
JIMMY: No way, the girls over there love it!
Gary saunters by to offer them food and Amy smiles and says he's made her a very happy woman. Gary replies that this is just the start, which rings more alarm bells for Paul. He asks Gary what else he's got planned but Gary just smirks and leaves. Jimmy calls out hello to Leo, who says hello in return, but Leo then tells Jimmy he'll catch up with him properly later on.
JIMMY: Leo doesn't look too happy to see me.
AMY: I don't think you're the problem.
PAUL: No your mum's right, mate. Truth is, Leo and I, we're not speaking at the moment.
JIMMY: G-dad, what have you done now?
Meanwhile, Sheila corners Gary once more because she's convinced he's stuffed something up with Kyle and wants to know the details. Gary admits he told Kyle not to come, which doesn't sit well with Sheila, but Gary says she has to trust he's made the right call for everyone. Sheila wants to know what the hell that means, but Gary replies it means he wants to make Amy happy, "And that's exactly what I'm going to do."
Number 32
Kyle stares longingly at a photo of Amy on his phone, quickly hiding it away when Sheila lets herself into the house. She bluntly tells him she knows there's something going on between him and his dad, so spill.
KYLE: For starters, Chloe told him I'm still in love with Amy. That went down like a lead balloon.
SHEILA: Oh, well your father didn't mention that.
KYLE: I don't want to love her, Gran. I don't. But every time she looks at me... I'm trying real hard here!
SHEILA: Amy loved you once but she has moved on. And you can see how happy she is with your father.
KYLE: But what if there is just some small part of her that still loves me?
SHEILA: There's not! She is marrying Gary in a few months' time and...
KYLE: No.
SHEILA: Yes she is.
KYLE: No, listen! This party is about to turn into a surprise wedding for Amy. That's why dad doesn't want me there.
SHEILA: A wedding? Oh he wouldn't.
Kyle scoffs and says it's a stupid idea so Sheila should go back and talk Gary out of it.
KYLE: He can't do this.
SHEILA: And I can't interfere.
KYLE: Oh that'd be a first.
Kyle thinks he'll talk sense into Gary instead, but Sheila stops Kyle from barging past her. She sternly wags a finger in his face and warns him not to get involved.
Number 24/Number 28
Aaron tells Mark that talking about things might help, but he's not in the mood. He's also not in the mood to deal with whoever's just knocked at the door, so Aaron says he'll deal with it. But it turns out to be Karl, surprising Mark by commiserating with him instead of being there to act as Elly's proxy.
KARL: Years ago Izzy lied to me about her pregnancy - the one before Holly. She led me to believe I was the father then she ripped that away from me. So, I understand your pain.
Over at #28, Elly tells Bea and Susan that the longer the lies went on the more self-destructive she became. Bea says she knows Elly would have been struggling, but she wishes her sister had've confided in her. Elly says she betrayed all of them by convincing them to let Finn live there. Susan shakes her head, clearly still riled by the news.
Mark tells Karl and Aaron that Elly begged him to trust her again but he could feel something was still strange between them. He just assumed it was because they hadn't settled back into everything yet. He says he's an idiot, but Aaron and Karl say none of this was his fault. Mark doesn't see it that way: "I let it happen, though. I let it happen to me again."
Elly says she's cheated on Mark twice now and given him every reason not to trust her. She tells Susan she feels ashamed for letting them down. Susan replies that Elly's family and they'll always be there for her, but her tone is laced with frustration and ire. Elly says she doesn't deserve it - and she doesn't deserve Mark either.
Mark states that he loved Elly and believed in her, but he has no idea who she is anymore. "It's like she's a different person." Karl says they're all grappling with it, but Mark replies that he's had enough. He heads for the hallway and tells them it's time for him to take control.
Number 26 Backyard
Sheila steals Gary away from Amy, Toadie and Shane to have a chat. She tells him Kyle informed her about the wedding then puts her two cents in. Sheila reminds Gary that Amy is a control freak at the best of times and wonders if this is such a crash hot idea. But Gary snippily replies that Amy's surrounded by all of her loved ones, "What could be more romantic?" The two Cannings pause their argument to gape at Kyle, who has just arrived. He gives Amy a hug and wishes her a happy birthday. Gary looks shaken.
Number 24
Elly arrives, grateful that Mark texted her to come over because they've got a lot more to talk about. But Mark just shakes his head and says there's nothing more to say. He points out the suitcase near the door and tells her she can collect the rest of her stuff when he's not there.
ELLY: I didn't think we were there yet.
MARK: See that doorframe? It's where I was going to hang the baby bouncer. (He points to the cupboards) Baby bottles, bowls and plates? They were going to go in there. And the play mat, that was going to go down here.
ELLY: I wanted that too.
MARK: You wanted what was right for you! You let me imagine having this life. You let me believe I was going to be a father again! After you cheated on me with Chloe you asked me if I was only taking you back because you were pregnant.
ELLY: (in tears) You said you still loved me.
MARK: I lied. I only did it because I wanted that baby.
Elly cries and Mark takes off his wedding ring, placing it on the bench.
MARK: And now there's nothing left to say. So you can take your stuff and get out of my house.
Taking one last look at Mark, a very distraught Elly picks up her suitcase and leaves. Mark sees the ultrasound photo on the fridge and is overcome with more sadness and anger, resulting in him sweeping all the candles and flowers from their forgotten date to the floor in a chaotic mess.
Number 28
Finn's the only one home when Elly staggers back inside crying, suitcase in hand. He looks as though he wants to offer his sympathies but isn't sure how, so he's surprised when Elly actually chooses to hug him, seeking comfort.
Number 26
Gary gathers everyone in the lounge room for what Amy assumes is just speech time. Kyle takes Amy aside and says he needs to tell her something, but Gary cuts in before any secrets are spilled and urges her to the front of the crowd with him. Kyle isn't impressed. Amy tells everyone she isn't too great at making speeches but thanks them all for coming. She gives a special shout out to her fiancé and says how lucky she is, but Gary admits he's the lucky one between them. Kyle can't stand to watch anymore and walks out.
GARY: I've got another surprise for you. Today is not just your birthday it's also... (he gets Jimmy to unhook the birthday banner, revealing a 'Mr & Mrs' banner underneath) Your wedding day!
Amy looks like her whole life has drained out of her, particularly when a celebrant walks out to start proceedings. And while Gary's ignorantly happy, Jimmy can see his mum's not reacting well, Leo's stunned, Sheila starts up a slow clap, Terese smiles and tries to support them, Paul's soul has evaporated and left this mortal realm, while the rest of the guests are just like, 'man these Ramsay Street parties are always dramatic as hell'.
Happy birthday, Amy! (insert sad party whistle blower sound here)
