No 24
Mark is measuring up the fence by the pool - he wants to get a Perspex screen installed to make it safer for when the baby is here. Aaron thinks he's getting ahead of himself a bit, but Mark says that Sonya thinks he's more invested in his love life than the baby. He insists he'd never let anything get in the way of being a father. Aaron suggests Mark go and tell Sonya that.
AARON: Mark, you've got, like, twenty years of co-parenting ahead of you, right? You have to be able to talk to each other.
MARK: I'm not sure we're actually calling it co-parenting, officially. You could say that we're having some issues with boundaries.
Aaron tells Mark he needs to learn how to communicate honestly.
Robinson's Motel
Steph and Victoria are in bed together. Victoria is still asleep. Steph gets up and opens the door to the motel room, only to find a bunch of dead flowers lying on the mat. She's creeped out, and when Paul arrives, he says it's probably Ellen continuing her vendetta. Paul suggests Steph take some time off and get away for a few days.
PAUL: I insist. You must be owed a mental health day or two, hey? Come on, scram - I don't want to see you here later.
Steph puts the flowers back on the floor and goes back into the room.
The Waterhole
Terese is giving Jasmine a business update on The Waterhole, mentioning a downturn in the younger crowd.
JASMINE: Can't trust Gen Y. We have a short attention span.
Jasmine is annoyed to see another positive headline for the Erinsborough Backpackers, featuring Warnie the wombat, on the front of the West Waratah Star. She demands to know what Terese is doing to undermine Leo's business. Terese says she's working on strategies; Jasmine wants details by the end of the day.
TERESE: Look, I'd be able to focus on ideas if I knew the reason behind this pursuit of Leo. Come on, Jasmine - I saw the way your grandfather reacted to the Tanaka name. Please - you've got to tell me what's going on.
JASMINE: I've got to get to my next meeting. Make sure that strategy is sent to me ASAP.
No 30
'Dee' has turned up; she's trying to get Toadie to come with her to a meeting at Willow's prospective grammar school today - it's a final formality to seal her offer of a place.
'DEE': Two parents are always better than one at these kinds of things. Especially when there's not much supporting documentation.
Toadie explains that Sonya has an ultrasound appointment today, so he can't come - but Sonya says it's fine, as Mark is accompanying her to the scan. She mentions she wants to clear the air with Mark after saying some things she shouldn't have said. At that moment, Mark comes in to pick up Sonya for the scan, and they leave, Sonya wishing them luck with Willow's meeting.
'DEE': So, does that mean you're free?
TOADIE: ...
Robinson's Motel
Steph is in the bathroom, looking stressed out. She takes her psych medication and returns to the main room to rejoin Victoria, who is just waking up. Steph tells Victoria she's going to take off on her bike for a few days, as she doesn't want all the 'emotional stuff' getting on top of her. Victoria wonders if she's done something wrong, but Steph insists not - she just needs to get away.
VICTORIA: Explain what the bike's all about.
STEPH: Oh, the bike? The bike is everything.
VICTORIA: Can I come with you, though?
STEPH: Are you sure?
VICTORIA: Mmm. Take me.
Steph smiles.
Erinsborough Hospital
Nurse Lee Darwin is performing the ultrasound, while Mark and Sonya watch on the screen. The nurse asks if they want to know the baby's gender; Sonya says no, but Mark says yes at the same time.
SONYA: It's your baby, Mark, so it's really your choice. I answered without thinking.
MARK: Yes, please - I'd like to know.
Nurse Darwin tells them it's a girl, which Mark seems pleased about - but she appears to have noticed an anomaly, and goes to get the doctor to take a look. Sonya assures Mark it will be fine. Mark mentions that they haven't discussed names for the baby.
SONYA: I didn't think that I'd be involved.
MARK: Okay. Well I've been thinking about it, and if it's okay by you, I want to call her Caitlin.
SONYA: After Kate?
MARK: Yeah. Is that bad? I mean, if I was still doing this with Steph, I probably wouldn't have gone there. But she meant a lot to me.
David comes in with the nurse.
DAVID: Lee asked me to come in because the measurement on the nuchal translucency is slightly outside the range we'd like to see.
MARK: Right - and what does that mean?
DAVID: Oh, it's not something to be alarmed about. It could be nothing. But in my opinion, you should seriously consider an amniocentesis to find out for sure.
Mark and Sonya look worried.
Harold's Café
Leo is flirting with Amy, by helping her with an answer to a crossword - flirtation. He then goes to order a coffee. Terese, who is at the counter, makes a barbed remark to Leo about how nice it must be to have Tim Collins on side, running positive pieces about the backpackers' in the Star.
LEO: You get advertorials with your promo package - why shouldn't I?
TERESE: My advertorials aren't making the front page. And my backers aren't happy.
LEO: Heart's breaking for you (!)
TERESE: So - do you know them? The Udagawa family?
LEO: Only through working for you. Why?
TERESE: Well, prominent Japanese family - been doing business in the area for thirty years, on and off...
LEO: Here's something for the fact file, Terese - not all Japanese people know each other. Wow - who knew? (!)
Terese walks out, leaving Leo shaking his head.
The Waterhole
Mark and Sonya are discussing whether to have the amnio. Mark points out that it's only recommended when the chance of abnormality is high. But Sonya is worried about the 1 in 200 chance of a miscarriage that can result from an amnio.
SONYA: It's up to us.
MARK: Is it? Is it up to us, or is it up to you? I mean, it's invasive. It's your body.
SONYA: I know. But it's your baby.
They agree to talk to the obstetrician and go from there. Mark points out that Sonya will need a lot of rest if they do go ahead with it - she says Toadie or Steph will look after her.
SONYA: I want to say, I'm really sorry about last night, Mark.
Sonya explains she saw Mark with Elly and panicked; she wanted to make sure nothing was going on between them. Mark insists there isn't, but asks if it's really anyone else's business if there was.
SONYA: The truth is, I'm actually really concerned about you getting into some kind of rebound thing. And I don't necessarily think that Elly is the best influence on you, and I really don't need her chiming in when things are already so complicated anyway. And yes, look, I know I'm being judgemental about her, and I could've handled it better - and I'm sorry.
MARK: No, that's fair enough. I get it.
SONYA: ... And I think you should call the baby Caitlin. It's a beautiful tribute.
For his part, Mark admits he's struck out a lot recently with relationships - but that there will be someone eventually.
MARK: But I need you to know that nothing is gonna get in the way of me being a dad.
SONYA: I know that.
As Mark leaves, Paul arrives.
PAUL: So how is her royal majesty the mayor, eh?
SONYA: What do you want, I'm tired.
Paul sits down and tells Sonya that Steph is struggling with the current situation. He believes that Victoria is just a distraction for Steph - a problem compounded by Ellen being out for revenge.
PAUL: So I want you to tell the father of your baby not to go monstering Steph. She's pretty fragile.
Sonya looks bemused at being lectured by Paul.
Ramsay Street
Steph and Victoria are preparing to head off on their motorbike getaway.
STEPH: I'm a bit of a ninja when it comes to packing.
VICTORIA: You're a bit of a ninja when it comes to a few things, actually.
Mark shows up.
MARK: What are you doing?
STEPH: Going away for a few days.
MARK: With your girlfriend?
VICTORIA: Hi, Mark.
MARK: What, that's it? Things get messy and you just take off?
Mark stomps off back towards the house, and Victoria encourages Steph not to let it bring her down. They leap on the bike together, and roar off.
No 30
Mark moans to Sonya about Steph, saying that she ought to have stuck around knowing Sonya may be having an amnio. Sonya admits she told Steph that the scan went well, and says she feels like they should keep it between themselves until they make a decision.
SONYA: I'm asking you not to involve any other women, so maybe the rule needs to be, when it comes to the baby, we don't involve anybody else in the decision-making at all.
MARK: What about Toadie?
SONYA: ... I just don't want to worry him unnecessarily. He's got so much stuff going on at the moment. So if we can just agree to keep this between ourselves, then you can date whoever you want.
MARK: Sure. Agreed.
Rebecchi Law (incorporating Brand Enthusiasm)
Toadie and 'Dee' arrive. Aaron talks to them about a sausage-sizzle he's organising to promote Brand Enthusiasm, which he says will bring in a lot of traffic.
TOADIE: I hope it's the right kind of traffic!
AARON: Look, I'm sure there is a huge demand for my sausage. But I'm thinking it's people who want promotions.
'Dee' says the meeting at Willow's school went amazingly, and Toadie agrees. As long as Willow keeps her nose clean, he says, there shouldn't be any problems. In Toadie's office, he asks 'Dee' if she thought Willow seemed nervous after the meeting. 'Dee' says she probably just wanted to do him proud.
'DEE': Thank you so much for coming.
TOADIE: ... I hope you can appreciate that protecting my marriage is my number one priority.
'DEE': Oh, absolutely. As it is for Sonya.
TOADIE: Yes, it is, yeah.
'DEE': It's not surprising you ended up with someone so strong. Exactly what you needed.
TOADIE: Yeah, she is amazing.
'DEE': Yeah, she is. I don't know how she maintains it - a strong marriage, and carries another man's baby. A lot of people couldn't maintain those boundaries.
Rattled, Toadie suggests they call it a day. 'Dee' agrees, and says he should catch up with Sonya and Mark to see how the baby scan went. After 'Dee' leaves, Toadie calls Sonya's work - but is concerned when he's told she's not there...
A road somewhere
Steph and Victoria are having bike troubles - it's smoking, and a strange smell is coming from the engine.
STEPH: Someone's put diesel in the tank (...) One guess who's done this.
Rebecchi Law (incorporating Brand Enthusiasm)
A suspicious Toadie asks Aaron if Mark was unwell this morning. Aaron says not, and Toadie reveals that both Mark and Sonya have called in ill to work this afternoon.
AARON: You're not suggesting that something's going on between them, are you? Like, other than having a baby, of course?
TOADIE: No, of course not. It's just - it's out of character for both of them (...) and I'm concerned that something may have happened with the scan. But, you know, I can't call them cos both of their phones are off.
AARON: Mate, I'm sure it'll be fine.
Toadie doesn't look convinced.
No 24
Sonya and Mark are hanging out by the pool, talking about 'Dee'.
SONYA: Nothing's been the same since she arrived. That's partly why I don't want to talk to Jarrod about what's going on with the baby; I just don't want to stress him out even more.
But Mark says he's more worried about Sonya getting stressed out by all the Dee/Willow drama; she needs to remember that she deserves to be looked after too. To this end, Mark starts giving Sonya a shoulder massage.
Toadie approaches from around the side of the house, and seeing them together, looks concerned. He stands and watches for a while, as Mark, with his arms around Sonya, feels the baby kicking. Upset, Toadie walks away again.
Lassiter's
Amy is at the hotel doing some repairs, which she assures Terese won't take long. Terese sees Jasmine in the office behind reception, and watches as she takes a large envelope from her briefcase, marked with the name 'TANAKA'. When Terese enters the room, Jasmine slams the case shut immediately.
Terese says she's been considering the strategy they should pursue against Leo - the most effective way to drive him out would be a price war, she contends, but it would also damage Lassiter's bottom line.
JASMINE: I'll take responsibility for that.
TERESE: Doesn't this seem a little bit extreme?
JASMINE: It's just a short-term measure until Leo cuts his losses and takes his brother with him.
TERESE: Right. So this is about David too?
JASMINE: You just focus on getting the price war started. I'll handle everything else.
Terese looks worried.
Fitzgerald Motors
Steph tells Victoria that the bike needs serious repairs. Keith (presumably the new manager) has told her it will take a few days as the garage is booked up with jobs.
STEPH: I just think us staying together isn't gonna work.
VICTORIA: What, because of your bike?
STEPH: No - because this isn't the first incident. Ellen's clearly not over you, and I just can't deal with it - especially if this keeps up.
Victoria suggests Steph go to the police (someone other than Ellen!) but Steph says Mark (the only other police officer) wasn't any help last time either, so it's pointless. Victoria says she still wants to go on their road trip, and suggests they take her car instead.
VICTORIA: Please, let's just give us a chance, okay? I really need to get away too. And going away with you would make me happy.
Steph agrees, albeit somewhat reluctantly. But once Victoria's gone to fetch the car, a series of quick shot changes suggest that Steph is quite rattled and mentally taxed by what's happened.
Ramsay Street
Sonya returns home to find Toadie waiting for her. He doesn't let on he's seen her with Mark, but says he's been calling her - she says her phone was off. He asks why she wasn't at work, but Sonya changes the subject, asking about the meeting with Willow and Dee. Toadie turns the questioning back on her, asking if everything was okay with the ultrasound.
SONYA: Yeah. Yeah, it's... it's fine, for now, so...
She claims she was feeling quite tired, so decided not to go back to work afterwards and 'recharge' instead.
TOADIE: So what did you do?
SONYA: What?
TOADIE: To recharge?
SONYA: Err, I had a nice long lunch. I just... got some fresh air, and just relaxed.
TOADIE: Okay, good.
SONYA: Yeah, it was good. I feel much better, so...
Sonya goes back into the house, but Toadie looks suspicious and quite angry.
Lassiter's
Amy is still doing some work at the hotel, and Terese waits for her to vacate the area near the office, so she can sneak in. She opens Jasmine's briefcase, and finds the envelope with 'Tanaka' written on it. Terese begins looking through the thick pile of documentation inside. We can't see what it is. Then, Jasmine comes in suddenly, catching a startled Terese in the act!
