Outside Number 32
'You're back!' Max grins, pointing out the blatantly obvious. Inside number 26, Lyn runs out into the loungeroom, hearing Steph's bike, and laughs in delight when she looks out the window.
MAX: We must be the last of the early risers! I've had a yard full of teenagers all night...what's your excuse?
Steph still hasn't said anything, silently climbing off her bike and walking to stand in front of Max. But now, she speaks.
STEPH: There was something I forgot to do before I left...
And with that, she wraps her arms around his neck, and kisses him. He doesn't seem to mind too much, as he pulls her closer, and kisses her back (listen for the whoops and cheers of a certain group of viewers...). From Lyn's vantage point at the window, she turns her nose up, but back in the street, Steph and Max are on cloud 9. Max laughs as he kisses Steph again, and then asks if she is just going to take off again now. She says it all depends...and Max realises he has come back for him. Max invites her inside for a drink, but she says she should take her things back home and let them know she's back first. Steph promises they'll catch up later, and asks how his day is looking.
MAX: Oh, it gets better all the time!
They grin dopily at each other, and then turn their backs to head off, but Max calls out to Steph. He runs back over to her as she looks up, and starts kissing her again. Summer comes out the door with another bag of garbage, and spots her Dad and Steph kissing. She is excited, and points out the canoodling couple to Heather and Boyd. Heather smiles, but Boyd is disgusted, passing his garbage bag to Summer, and storming back inside.
Number 26
Lyn boils the jug, as Steph bursts in the front door. Lyn gives Steph a hug, but wonders why she cut her trip short, and Steph says that she got a dose of homesickness. Lyn tells Steph that Joe has landed in th US, and Steph says she can just imagine it - Mick Dundee II. Steph makes small talk with Lyn about her pregnancy, and Lyn asks how Alex is. Steph mumbles '...yeah' and Lyn asks if they have had a fight. Steph says it is nothing like that - they just both wanted to go in different directions. Lyn says him forward and her backwards, but Steph doesn't know about that - what's the point of roaming all over the countryside if everything you want is right here? Lyn asks if it is Alex's fault...or has Steph been thinking about 'someone else?' Steph says she knows what Lyn is going to say, but she has to be true to how she feels, and she would feel like big fat wimp if she was running away from Max. Lyn reminds Steph how much baggage Max comes with, and Steph says she knows.
STEPH: But I just can't help smiling whenever I see him, or even think about him...I just...I can't get him out of my head! I've got to give it a fair go.
Steph asks Lyn if she thinks she's crazy, but Lyn says she is so brave and strong, and tells her she deserves a bit of good luck.
Number 32
Max walks back into the house, grinning from ear to ear (him and a certain group of viewers...), and exciting Summer exclaiming that this is the best thing ever, and asking him why he isn't dancing or something! Max says they just have to take things one step at a time, and NO Summer can't go and see Steph - she's coming over later, but Max wants her all to himself! Max rushes off to have a shower. Summer is still dizzy with excitement (her and a certain group of viewers...), but Boyd just scowls at her.
Coffee Shop
Nina tells Susan all about her new job at Lassiters, and Susan congratulates her, but reminds her to take some time to relax too, and spend time with her friends. Speaking of 'friends', Jack walks in the door, and Susan says goodbye. Jack walks straight past Nina to the drinks fridge, and Nina sits at a table, her and Jack exchanging glances. Jack walks over and asks if he can sit with her, but Nina doesn't know whether it is a good idea. Jack says she is taking things a bit too far - she's been avoiding him, and if anything it's going to make people more suspicious. Jack asks if they can just put it behind them and be friends.
Number 32
Summer excitedly hugs Steph, and tells her she knew she wouldn't stay away for long. Steph asks how she knew, and Summer says she just 'had a feeling.' Boyd and Heather come back in to finish cleaning, and Steph comments that she is sorry she missed the party - it sounds like it was pretty big. Boyd doesn't say anything. Max thanks him for cleaning up, and Boyd and Heather thank him for the party. Max thanks Boyd again for staying back to look after Summer, but Boyd just looks at him, so Max suggests he and Steph head off before anymore of the day gets away. Steph bids them goodbye, and Summer and Heather respond, but Boyd doesn't even acknowledge her. They leave and Heather looks at Boyd.
HEATHER: What's with you?
BOYD: What?
HEATHER: Your Dad just gave you the biggest party of the year!
BOYD: Yeah, last night was cool, but him going off with her today just wrecks it.
Number 26
Lori is in the loungeroom having Physio, and Lyn and Susan are talking about Steph and Max. Susan tells her not to worry, when Lori shrieks in the next room. They race in to find out what's wrong, and Lori says she got some tingling in her legs! It's working! Lyn says if persistence counts for anything, Lori will be up and running in no time! Lori wants to call jack, but Lyn says they should wait till the end of the session, and Susan says he was down at the Coffee Shop with Nina, so he shouldn't be much longer. Lori looks a bit put out, but she doesn't have time to be upset, as the Physio hurts her - but pain is good, she says!
Coffee Shop
Nina asks how Lori is, and Jack says she is determined to get out of the chair. Nina asks if she will, and Jack says he hopes so. Nina tells jack Lori is lucky to have him...They can do this, can't they? Just chat and be friends? Jack tells her he wants to, and Nina says she does too.
JACK: And we like each other right?
NINA: Like?
JACK: Just...don't, Nina, ok? It doesn't do us any good...
Park
Max and Steph walk arm in arm through the park, carrying a picnic, and Steph asks Max why he let her go. Max says he thought about trying to talk her out of it, but he didn't want to get in the way - there was Alex and all...
STEPH: As if!
Max says he is carefree - like Steph, but Steph says he means aimless - there is a difference. Max says he didn't think it was right of him to talk her out of it - she didn't need his life. Steph wants to know what's so bad about his life, and Max says nothing, but it is complicated...at some stage the kids are bound to compare her to their Mum, and...Steph silences him, and reminds him that she has known abut Summer, Boyd, and Max's wife all along.
MAX: And you still think I'm some kind of a catch?
STEPH: Bachelor of the year!
He kisses her, and they continue walking, grinning happily at each other.
Number 32
Heather asks Boyd what CD he wants to listen to, and he snaps at her just to pick one and put it on. She comments on his mood, and Summer points out he has been snappy and grumpy all day. Boyd says it is Max going off with Steph - it's just wrong! Summer says he told Max he was ok with it, but Boyd replies that is when he thought Steph was gone for good. Summer reminds him Max is allowed to have a girlfriend, and Boyd says he knows, he just thought it would be someone closer to his own age...Summer doesn't see why the age difference is such a problem, and Heather says Steph seems nice. Boyd says she is...but he doesn't see how Steph Scully could ever replace their Mum. Heather reminds him that Max won't want that - but he does have to get on with his life, and besides, he could do a lot worse...has he seen Sarah Fletcher's Step-Mum lately....?
Number 26
Jack congratulates Lori on her exciting news, and Lori says she really feels like she is going to beat this. Jack wishes he had been there, and Lori is sorry he wasn't, but he promises next time he will be. Lori asks where he was and he relies that he just had bits and pieces to do, then he stopped at the Coffee Shop to get them some lunch. Lori tells him she's already eaten.
Number 28
Susan is telling Lyn about Karl's speech on airplane safety he has written to calm Joe. Lyn says she doesn't think ti would work, but Susan says she heard it...and it is an excellent sedative, if nothing else! Lyn laughs and says Joe not wanting to appear afraid in front of Karl would be enough. Lyn is excited for Joe, being in New York, and says she wishes she could see it for herself. Susan comments that there's no fun for the pregnant, but Lyn says she's had a great few weeks - second trimester is 'glowphase'!! Susan asks if Lyn has thought about Anti-Natal classes, and Lyn says of course not - she did them with Steph, but not with any of the others. Susan says a refresher might be useful, but Lyn doesn't like the thought of all the newlyweds and first-timers, and her - 'Grandma Scully' in the same room. Susan offers to go with her if she wants the moral support, and Lyn supposes it would take her mind off 'things'...Steph-shaped things to be precise. Susan doesn't know what worries her about Max and Steph - Max is a lovely guy. Lyn says she knows, and she is certain he will do the right thing by Steph, but if it doesn't work out there is so much to walk away from. Susan reminds Lyn of what she had just said about Max. Lyn says she knows, but they don't know what will happen in the future. Susan says no, but in the end it just comes down to them.
The Rotunda at the Park
STEPH: So...fancy a bit of...frisbee?
Max laughs that it's the first time he has ever been asked that on a date, but Steph reminds him she is a physical girl - she hopes he can keep up. Max mocks hurt, and says that he was up all night supervising teenagers, and their raging hormones, but, well if he doesn't pass the physical...He gets up as if to leave, but Steph pulls him back down to her and says he'll do. Max is relieved. She says that she thinks they'll have to give the kids an early curfew from now on, just for his sake, because something tells her they have quite a few of those parties ahead of them. Max says he hopes so, and Steph nods. They kiss happily.
Number 24
Nina tinkles the ivories, while Summer looks out the window. Nina says she thought she was just getting a drink - what's the stop off about? Summer thought she heard Max's car, but Nina says it is the third time this lesson! Summer can't help it - she thought Steph was gone for good. Nina says she is happy for them, but doesn't know what to say when Summer asks if she thinks they'll get married - Steph only got back today! Summer says not tomorrow or anything, but one day. Nina says you have to give it time, and Summer asks how long she would wait. Nina doesn't know, but Summer replies that if you know the person is perfect, you shouldn't have to wait at all.
NINA: If you knew they were perfect you wouldn't...
Summer asks if there is someone she thinks she is destined to be with, but Nina thinks she is just trying to avoid practice, and tells her to go over her Major Arpeggios again. 'Boring' Summer sighs, but starts playing.
Number 26
Lori wheels herself into the kitchen, and starts to get herself a drink, but Lyn reminds her she can ask for help if she needs it, and gets a glass down for her. Lori just doesn't want to put her out, but Lyn says she has been an inspiration through everything - she never let it get her down. Lori says she ahs had lots of support. Lyn asks what she is thinking about for dinner, just as Jack arrives home, and Lori says Jack is due for kitchen duty - he can cook. Lyn is off for dinner with Susan, and points out that Lori and Jack have the house to themselves. Jack wants to get pizza and invite some people 'round but Lori was hoping they could have a talk.
Number 32
Max and Steph arrive home and tell Summer the picnic was nice, even though it rained. Max is surprised to see Heather is still there, but she is on her way home. She thanks him again for the party, and heads off. On the front doorstep, Heather points out that Boyd didn't even say hello to Steph. Boyd says he didn't get chance, but Heather says she'll think he doesn't like her, and to let her see that he does. They say goodnight, and Boyd heads back inside, where Max is telling Summer he and Steph are taking things one step at a time. Steph is in the kitchen - Max has asked her to stay for dinner, and he asks Boyd what he feels like. Boyd says he could go a pizza...if that's ok with Steph. Max says of course it is, but Summer thinks Japanese or Thai might be better, and runs off to get some menu's. Boyd tells Max that he knows some things will be different from now on, and he wants Max to know he is ok with it. Max is really grateful. Boyd asks if Steph will be going on their surfing trip with them the following week, but Max said he thought they might keep that as a special family holiday if that's ok.
MAX: Look mate, whatever happens between me and Stephanie, it's not going to change the way I feel about you guys, you know that?
BOYD: Yeah, I know...
Number 26
Jack is telling Lori how good it is that Max and Steph are finally together, and asking what she thinks, but Lori doesn't answer. Jack asks her what is up and she says that since she has been 'stuck on her butt' she's had time to think about things - them, mainly. She's been sensing the negativity for a while now, but has been brushing it aside. Jack wants to know how long a while is, and Lori replies since she got here...but also for a bit before they left New Zealand. She says since the accident she knows she can beat anything, and she doesn't want him to wrap her up in cotton wool - he can be straight with her. Jack wants to know what Lori wants from him, and Lori says she doesn't know...maybe nothing, but if there is anything he has to tell her...be honest about it.
