- Susan is knocked to the floor in the Eirini Rising courtyard by a bunch of marauding teenagers
Eirini Rising
Susan is still on the floor in the courtyard, in pain and struggling to get up. Karl appears and rushes to help her. She tells him she's hurt her wrist and pulled a muscle in her side, so can't get back on her feet. Terese rushes out to join them. Susan explains a bunch of teens knocked her down; she maintains it was an accident, but the kids rushed to get away.
Karl thinks Susan needs x- rays, so helps her to her feet. Susan points out that the gang of teens dropped something on the floor - it appears to be a harmonica. Terese deduces that the teens must have been the same intruders who have been stealing musical instruments from the residents.
Ramsay Street
A sad- looking Mackenzie sends Haz a text asking him to meet her in the street. He soon appears, while Byron also emerges from No 24, having also had a text from Mack. They gather round forlornly, looking at what Mack wanted to show them - a sign that has gone up on the front lawn advertising No 32 for sale.
Cara and Remi approach. They express their condolences about the house being put on the market, and their hopes that they'll find somewhere just as good to live instead. But the No 32 gang look totally dejected.
No 22
Andrew is chatting to Terese about the crime spree at Eirini Rising; he's going to see if the police can pull any fingerprints off the harmonica, and suggests she hire extra security in the meantime. Terese has already been in touch with the security firm to arrange this.
Jane arrives and gives them both an update on Susan's condition; her hip is just a pulled muscle and her wrist is only sprained. Andrew promises to get to the bottom of finding out who the teenagers are, and leaves.
TERESE: I hate that I can't keep my residents safe, not to mention my staff.
JANE: Terese, I wanted to apologise to you, for the way that I reacted when you suggested that the students might've been responsible for the robberies. I mean, it clearly is a likelihood. Although they simply couldn't have got in through the connecting door.
Terese admits she hasn't told the Eirini Rising residents about today's incident, as she doesn't want to scare them; and she's concerned 'World War III will break out' if they think the students are responsible.
TERESE: We sold this place as a safe, idyllic new life. And it's not safe, and it's far from idyllic, for anyone involved.
No 28
Susan is back from the hospital on the sofa, but is looking rattled after her ordeal. Karl tells her she'll be as good as new in a few weeks, but she doesn't look reassured.
KARL: Darling, are you worried this might trigger an MS relapse?
SUSAN: I've been in remission for so long...
KARL: Yeah. Any type of inflammation is not good for you. Maybe I should make an appointment with your rheumatologist?
SUSAN: Yeah, whatever you think.
KARL: You know, you don't need to go to work tomorrow.
SUSAN: Yeah, well... I think I might just have an early night.
She gets up, clearly still in a lot of pain, and heads to bed. Knowing she's not feeling herself, Karl looks concerned.
No 24
Jane comes home to join Aaron and Nicolette. Aaron asks after Susan; Jane says she's in shock but otherwise okay. Aaron announces he's going to bed, saying he's going to get an early start tomorrow and check out the new management at his old gym, The Shed. Jane comments that he's been doing a lot of exercise lately.
AARON: Yeah. Guess it's just the only thing that gets me out of my head. Makes me feel like myself.
Once he's gone to bed, Nicolette asks Jane when she's going to get to see the wedding dress she decided on.
JANE: Oh, it was beautiful - but I'm not sure that it feels right to buy a dress when we haven't even set a date yet.
NICOLETTE: But if it's right, wouldn't it be nice to get that part sorted? The earlier you start wedding planning, the better.
But Jane looks unsure about that.
No 32
Mackenzie, Haz and Byron have just finished dinner, and discuss strategies to avoid having to move house - Mackenzie jokes that she could tie herself to the front door, or spread a rumour that there was a triple homicide in Byron's bedroom!
BYRON: Why is it my bedroom, though?
MACKENZIE: Oh, it's just the most homicidal of all the rooms.
Haz has a more serious suggestion - Byron could ask Vic to buy the house. But Byron says Vic has his heart set on buying a business for him and Nicolette. Byron wonders if there's anyone else they know that might want to invest in the house. Haz reminds them that Krista is out of the running, so Mackenzie suggests they could buy the place themselves.
BYRON: Oh, that's perfect, with all the cash that we have lying around (!)
Mack admits it's probably a pipe dream. Vic comes in, and tells them he's heading out for a walk, then leaves. Mackenzie tells Haz and Byron that they should all agree to stay together as a household, whatever happens. Byron and Haz are in agreement.
MACKENZIE: And who knows? We might be able to find a magical unicorn sharehouse 2.0!
No 24
Vic turns up with a bottle of something- or- other and asks Jane if she fancies a nightcap, but she claims she's 'not really a nightcap kind of girl anymore'. Vic persists by reminding Jane of the good old days, but at this point she gets a text from Mike; it appears he and Jane have arranged to have a call, so she asks Vic if they can do the nightcap another time. Disappointed, he leaves her to it. Jane looks conflicted.
The next day, Nicolette has summoned Byron and Vic round for a brainstorming session about their planned family business; she's even set up a whiteboard to show off all her thinking. She has identified a few options - the first of which is a general store/café close to Leo's vineyard, serving local food and wine.
BYRON: Yeah, I don't know if I can do a store...
NICOLETTE: This is a presentation, not a conversation!
Her second idea is a private fine dining experience based on guests' preferred theme or cuisine. Byron seems keener on this idea, and Vic thinks they'll do well in whatever they choose - because their 'healthy competition' with one another will help breed success!
When Vic goes to the bathroom, conversation between the siblings turns to Mike.
NICOLETTE: Have you noticed Mum's lukewarm vibe about the wedding?
BYRON: You mean the dress shopping?
NICOLETTE: She didn't seem excited about it all to me. Or anything else wedding- related.
BYRON: I mean, long- distance can't be easy. I'm not surprised she's holding back a little.
NICOLETTE: She's holding back a lot!
BYRON: Mum and Mike love each other, okay? They'll work it out.
But we cut to a shot of the corridor, where Vic has been listening with interest...
Eirini Rising
Karl and Susan are on their way to work, Susan still hobbling a bit after her fall. Karl asks Susan if she's sure she doesn't want to take the day off, but Susan insists she's fine. They convene with Terese and Andrew in the courtyard. Terese also suggests to Susan that she could be at home resting.
SUSAN: Would you let this keep you away from work?
TERESE: No. You've got me there!
Terese tells them that she's stepped up security and that Andrew will be interviewing all the residents today about their stolen items, especially Harold who wants to make sure the theft of his tuba is on record. She explains she's decided not to tell the residents about what happened to Susan, however. Andrew wants to take Susan's statement first, but Susan still seems shaken - and when Andrew goes to get the paperwork...
SUSAN: I shouldn't have come in. I'm not ready.
Karl says he'll take her home, and Terese assures Susan that everything is under control here.
No 32
Haz is cleaning the pool when Byron turns up.
BYRON: Haz- Man.
HAZ: B- Dog.
There's a comedy moment as Byron points out that the pool is already leaf- free - Haz hadn't realised he'd finished! Mackenzie rushes out to join them excitedly; she has good news.
MACKENZIE: I think I might know how we can stay here! Okay, so I wasn't completely joking last night when I said that we should try and buy the house together. I've been doing some sums, and I think it might actually be possible! (...) I made a tentative appointment at the bank (...) There could be a chance that we can get a loan.
Haz and Byron exchange a glance.
HAZ: I dunno. We all have pretty different incomes...
MACKENZIE: Yeah, that's why I think we should just lay it all out there and see what they say.
BYRON: I guess it's... it's worth a try.
HAZ: Alright. Yeah, let's give it a go.
They all high- five one another.
No 24
Jane comes in with some shopping, and Nicolette gets straight to asking her how things are going with Mike. Jane says they actually spoke last night, but they didn't discuss wedding dates; Mike was telling her all about the new bike route he's charting in Italy.
NICOLETTE: Why don't you care about your wedding?
JANE: Excuse me?!
NICOLETTE: It's like you switch off whenever it comes up. And come to think of it, you don't even mention Mike unless I ask about him first.
JANE: That's not true.
NICOLETTE: When was the last time that he wrote you a love letter?
JANE: Well... I don't know. I can't remember off the top of my head!
NICOLETTE: He used to send them every week. And you would run to the mailbox, so excited.
JANE: He's busy, Nicolette. As am I.
NICOLETTE: That's just the thing. You seem to be okay with that! Can you honestly tell me that you two haven't drifted?
JANE: I can honestly tell you that we have not. So how about you focus on your own life, instead of poking your nose into mine?
Jane walks off, but Nicolette looks concerned as she glances over at the framed photos of Mike and Jane on the sideboard.
No 32
By the pool, Byron and Haz are getting excited about the idea of becoming homeowners - a Jacuzzi in the living room being among the items on their plan of action - and generally advancing their bromance. But Mack re- emerges, finishing up a call with a financial advisor. She's been told that even if the three of them could afford a deposit, they'd struggle to get a loan, as they couldn't be sure of meeting repayments.
MACKENZIE: I'm so sorry for getting your hopes up.
HAZ: Hey, don't be sorry. It was worth a try.
MACKENZIE: I think we're gonna have to face the fact that... we're gonna lose our home.
Music of dejection.
No 24
Jane is having a spring clean, while also using the opportunity to put out a lot of clutter for hard rubbish. She takes off her engagement ring so she can put on some rubber gloves, placing it carefully on a large dish next to a pot of herbs. Vic comes in, and apologises for coming over so late last night.
JANE: It's fine. I appreciate the thought.
VIC: So the call with Mike went well?
JANE (coolly): It did.
VIC: Surprised you didn't come home in that dress. It looked perfect on you.
JANE (annoyed): You've been talking to your daughter. Because she's been going on about it, and I really don't need to hear it from you too.
VIC: The people who love you most seem to be noticing the same thing.
JANE (annoyed): Noticing what, exactly?
VIC: Well, you're engaged to a man on the opposite side of the world who keeps pushing his return date.
JANE: ... What makes you think you can comment on my personal life?
VIC: Because I care about you, Jane. I don't want to see you unhappy... Look, I know it was initially his job keeping him away, but I mean, is that still the only reason?
Jane ignores him and keeps cleaning.
VIC: You and I, we... we had a time apart, but not like this. We never fizzled.
JANE: Our failed relationship can hardly be compared to the mature one that I have with Mike!
VIC: Mature, or... stale?
JANE (irritated): My personal life is no longer any of your concern! You see yourself out.
Jane walks off into another room!
No 28
Susan is on the sofa, looking thoughtful. Karl brings her a herbal tea and sits opposite.
SUSAN: Are you scared of getting old?
KARL: Oh. Well, I, I... I don't really think much about it. I suppose that's why I'm looking after my health, just to maximise the years I've got left. However many there might be.
SUSAN: I'm scared. Yesterday I just hurt my wrist and pulled a muscle, but... I couldn't get up! I wasn't strong enough!
KARL: You were in shock.
SUSAN: No, Karl, no - it's not just that. In my mind, I'm still in my 40s. But lying there, unable to help myself, I realise that I'm... I'm not where I thought I was physically. And then earlier in the day, before I fell, there was this delivery man who was dropping a parcel at reception. He thought I was a resident!
KARL: (laughs)
SUSAN: No, seriously - you think about it! I am not that much younger than some of the people living there.
KARL: Well, neither am I.
SUSAN: When I retired from school... I was worried that that was it, there would be no more opportunities for me, I was past it. And then Eirini Rising came along, and it was everything I could have hoped for. What if I'm not up to it?
KARL: Oh, Susan, honestly! Of course you're up to it. No, no - you have so much to offer! Don't let this scare you off, darling. It's just a little setback. Hey - you and I have got a lot of life left.
Susan looks somewhat reassured by Karl's positivity.
The Waterhole
Remi and Cara are at the bar, chatting to Aaron. Cara remarks that the No 32 housemates looked shattered to see that the house was up for sale.
AARON: Yeah, well, I'm not surprised. That's a great home.
REMI: You and David were keen to buy that back. Is that something you're still considering?
AARON: Look, I would be lying if I said I wasn't considering it.
As Cara and Remi leave, they run into Haz and Mackenzie. Cara mentions that Aaron might be considering putting in an offer on No 32.
MACKENZIE: As an investment, or to live in?
CARA: Dunno. Might be worth asking.
REMI: Might be worth minding our own business!
Once Remi and Cara have gone, Mackenzie tells Haz that this could be the perfect development. Haz points out that they don't know what Aaron would plan to do with the house; Mackenzie says she's going to ask him.
Eirini Rising
Andrew has finished taking the residents' statements, and Terese thanks him. A resident called Santiago was pleased to be reunited with his harmonica, we learn! However, the bad news is they haven't managed to get any fingerprints from it.
ANDREW: How are you and the kids going, with Toad in Colac?
TERESE: Oh, we're fine. I mean, we miss him. We might take a drive down to see him soon.
ANDREW: I know you've got a lot going on - with single parenting, worrying about Susan, and drama at work. I'm no Toad, but I'm a good listener. And I'm right here.
TERESE: Look, the parenting I can handle. And Susan's okay. But work? You know, when Jane and I dreamt up this idea, we thought it was a no- brainer - having a school and a retirement experience side- by- side, genius. And I thought it would be so good for the community. But it really has been cursed from day one.
ANDREW: Oh, it's just early days.
TERESE: No, it's more than just teething issues. I feel like it's so much bigger than that. You know, maybe having the young and the old side- by- side isn't a genius idea after all. I mean, what if I've made a terrible mistake?
No 24
Jane comes in, and goes to retrieve her engagement ring from the dish she put it on earlier - but it's nowhere to be seen. Nicolette emerges from her bedroom and suggests someone might have moved the ring, asking if anyone was here. Jane realises that she left Vic alone with the ring when she walked out on him, and storms out of the house to confront him about it!
The Waterhole
Mackenzie is still with Haz, and soon seizes an opportunity to ask Aaron about No 32. Aaron admits he's considering buying the house, but says he hasn't made any decision yet. Mack goes on to ask whether he would consider keeping the tenants on if he bought it.
AARON: Mack, that house is a really special place for me and David. Like, we had always planned to buy it back someday. So if I did, it would be as a family home for me, Nicolette and Isla.
MACKENZIE: Right. Yeah, of course.
AARON: I'd give you guys plenty of notice to find a new place, though. If it did happen.
HAZ: Thanks for your honesty.
As Aaron gets back to work, Mack and Haz glance forlornly at one another.
No 32
Byron and Vic are discussing the bespoke dining idea as a prospect for the family business - but at that point, Jane marches in, followed closely by Nicolette.
JANE (furious): How dare you?!
NICOLETTE: Mum, calm down.
JANE: Where is it?
VIC: Sorry?
JANE: You barge into my house - interfering in my life with your probing questions and opinions, and then you do this!
VIC: Okay, I have no idea what you're talking about.
JANE: You took my engagement ring, Vic, and I want it back now!
