No 30
As the confrontation continues, Cara and Remi are trying to convince JJ to see things from their perspective, while Dex stands by listening.
CARA: Felix is a criminal.
REMI: He's not someone you need in your life.
JJ: No, you don't know what I need!
REMI: Actually, yes, we do know.
CARA: He encouraged you to break the law, JJ. A decent person wouldn't do that.
REMI: Let alone a good father.
CARA: Plus, he knew your connection for weeks, and he didn't say anything.
JJ: Well, he must have been scared!
REMI: He was using you.
JJ: You don't get it, do you? Good father, bad father - it's not about that. I just want to know about where I come from!
CARA: You come from us! And it's our job to protect you from people who could hurt you!
REMI: Who already have.
JJ: *You've* hurt me.
JJ storms out. Dex looks guilty as Remi wonders how JJ found out.
DEX: I told him. I heard you guys talking about it.
REMI: Dexter! You really should have come to us first.
DEX: We needed a clean slate. We said no more secrets.
The Waterhole
Chelsea and Paul are having a drink at the bar; Chelsea laments about how awful it must have been for Krista to lose her memory after hitting her head.
CHELSEA: Although, with all the drugs in her system, how much would she remember anyway?
Paul sees Toadie and Terese come in together, and looks peeved as they start chatting to Wendy by the door.
CHELSEA: Are you okay?
PAUL: Yeah. Yeah, fine.
CHELSEA: Again... I really am sorry, for discussing our private business with Terese.
PAUL: Ah, forget it. After what you went through with Krista, I think that gives you a free pass.
Chelsea takes Paul's hand.
CHELSEA: I really do appreciate what we have. I may not be your one true love... but we make a pretty good team.
PAUL (smiling): Yeah. Yeah, we do, don't we?
Paul continues to look wistfully in Terese's direction, then makes a decision.
PAUL: Chelsea... ask me again.
CHELSEA: Ask you what?
PAUL: You know.
Chelsea looks like all her Christmases have come at once!
CHELSEA: Paul Robinson, will you marry me?
PAUL: ... Yes. Yes, I will.
They go in for a massive pash, and a thrilled Chelsea immediately decides they need an engagement party, before asking Wendy for a bottle of her best champagne.
Ramsay Street
The next morning, Cara is sitting on the No 30 mailbox having a cuppa, and contemplating the situation with JJ. Remi comes out to sit next to her.
CARA: Maybe we should've been upfront with JJ.
REMI: If we were, he would've completely ignored us.
CARA: Yeah, I guess.
REMI: If Felix had been a positive influence, things would be different. But he wasn't.
CARA: I mean, maybe it suited us to push him away?
REMI: When we had the boys, we always knew they might be curious about their fathers one day. We said we'd respect that.
CARA: Yeah, I remember the conversations.
REMI: Yeah, it's confronting, but I honestly think we would support it if the guy hadn't been so terrible. Do you doubt that?
CARA: No, no. I just... I just want to do the right thing. I guess I never want to put my feelings before JJ's. Or Dex, for that matter.
REMI: Yeah, neither do I. That's not what we're doing.
CARA: Yeah. You're right.
They kiss, just as Aaron comes over for a chat. He explains he's on his way to the hospital to pick up Krista. Remi hopes her memory comes back soon so she can move on. Cara asks if Aaron knows how Haz is doing; Aaron says he can't bring himself to see him.
Whimsical music begins to play as Chelsea rushes up to them excitedly.
CHELSEA: Guess who's getting married? I'm going to be Mrs Paul Robinson.
CARA: Wow (!)
REMI: Well, kudos on a job well done! All your hard work paid off.
Chelsea gives Remi a look, then tells them that the engagement party is tonight at the Waterhole.
REMI: When's the wedding? Yesterday?
CHELSEA: Oh, it won't be for at least a few weeks. I asked the boutique to fast- track my dress, but... perfection takes time.
CARA: You've already picked out your dress?
CHELSEA: ... Anyway, if that's all the congratulations I'm getting, I better run. I've got a party to plan!
Penthouse
Meanwhile, Paul is breaking the 'happy' news to Leo.
LEO: I did not see that coming.
PAUL: Really? I get married all the time.
LEO: Yeah, true. But isn't it kind of overkill? And isn't it counterintuitive to Operation Get Terese?
PAUL: No, that's not what this is about. Besides, that ship sailed. Terese and Jarrod are back together.
LEO: Right, so you're cashing in your chips and settling for second best, huh?
PAUL: Look, she's a good woman, and she makes me feel alive.
LEO: Alright, fine. Get a good pre- nup. And, umm, don't expect me to call her Mum.
Lassiter's Lake
JJ is sitting cross- legged on the grass when Dex arrives, and sits down next to him.
DEX: You got up early.
JJ: Yeah. I didn't want to see Mum or Ma. All night, I was thinking about how they reacted to that letter. You know, how they acted like Felix didn't care about me one bit. Yeah - like, okay, he knew he was my dad, didn't say anything. But he still made an effort to get to know me, you know? Like, maybe he was just waiting for the right time to come forward. Maybe he was just trying to be respectful to them?
DEX: If that's what you believe... that's what matters.
JJ: Mm. Yeah. Hey, umm, I never thanked you for filling me in. I'll, erm... I'll do something thanks- worthy for you one day.
DEX: Huh!
JJ: I promise! I promise.
Erinsborough Hospital
Mackenzie, Byron, Holly and Krista are all sitting with a comatose Haz in his hospital room, and they fuss over Krista as she's leaving hospital today. Mack is enthusiastically filling the room with Haz's favourite things for when he wakes up, including a framed photo of him and her together, and another photo of the whole sharehouse gang. Mack also encourages the others to speak to him directly, as he might be able to hear.
While Byron gets on with chatting to Haz, Holly tells Mackenzie that she's 'rocking this'.
HOLLY: Just don't feel like you have to do it all on your own. If you can think of anything else, I'm here to help.
MACKENZIE: Actually, there is something... I want to find Haz's family.
HOLLY: But, didn't they cut him off?
MACKENZIE: Yes, they're estranged - but they should know about this.
HOLLY: Yeah. Okay. Consider it done - I'm gonna do this for Haz.
Mackenzie hugs Holly.
Shortly afterwards, Krista is getting a hug from Melanie outside the hospital, as she waits with her bags for Aaron to come and pick her up. He soon arrives, and they tell him they're also waiting for Krista's discharge papers. Aaron tells them the news about Paul and Chelsea getting married. Evidently, Krista's memory still hasn't returned.
MELANIE: Interesting!
KRISTA: I don't get those two. But they've both been really nice to me - and, I mean, Chelsea possibly saved my life, so... best of luck to them, I guess. I wish I knew why I went to Chelsea's room before the accident.
MELANIE: It'll come.
KRISTA: Maybe it won't. The doctors said there's no way to know if I'll get my memory back entirely, or just a little bit, or not at all.
Melanie goes to chase up the discharge papers, giving Aaron and Krista the chance for a private chat. She asks how he's doing, and Aaron replies that she doesn't need to worry about him.
KRISTA: I'm so ashamed of myself. Can't believe I relapsed, and then I dragged you into it.
AARON: Krista, you didn't drag me into anything; I made my own decisions. Listen, can we start looking out for each other? If I ever cross a line, I need you to pull me up.
KRISTA: I will.
AARON: I'm gonna delete Shannon's number.
KRISTA: Me too.
They both go into their phones and do it. Krista tells Aaron they've got this, and they hold hands.
No 30
Cara and Remi have realised the boys aren't at home, and are worriedly waiting for them to return.
REMI: What are you thinking?
CARA: Months ago, when JJ thought that Andrew was his dad, he said that we were enough. And... I remember feeling such a sense of relief when he said those words.
REMI: I did too.
CARA: And now, Felix is in the picture, and there's all these red flags, and JJ is still determined to get to know him. It scares me. What if we can't protect him?
Dex comes in at this point, and reports that JJ is still out, and clearing his head - he'll be back 'when he gets back', Dex adds, before going to his room. Cara and Remi don't look reassured.
Erinsborough Hospital
Byron joins Holly outside the hospital. She's been trying to find info about Haz's family online, but has come up with next to nothing so far. Byron explains they deleted their online presence after learning about Haz's hacking ways; Holly had gathered this already.
HOLLY: I need to do this for Haz, to make up for how I treated him.
BYRON: You don't have to make up for anything.
HOLLY (panicked): Are you kidding? I yelled at him. I insulted him to his face, and behind his back. And I said that he was dead to me around the time that he literally nearly died.
BYRON: Yeah, look - take a breath, okay? You had every right to be angry at Haz. And now he needs us more than ever, so let's just focus on being there for Mack and Haz. Forget about all this guilt stuff, yeah?
HOLLY: ... Yeah, I guess. I just want him to wake up.
BYRON: Yeah, me too, Hoyland.
Lassiter's Complex
Leo glares at Aaron as he approaches and doesn't stop to talk, but Aaron initiates a conversation, saying he's just dropped Krista home from the hospital.
AARON: Leo, I am so sorry. I screwed up.
LEO: Yeah. You did.
AARON: You and David, you swore to look out for Krista, and I... I just did the opposite. But I swear to you, I'm going to make up for it.
LEO: ... You better. You know, I turned to you when Krista dumped me. You saw how confused I was about why she did it, and you knew the whole time. I think of you as a brother, Az. You're supposed to have my back.
AARON (emotional): Yeah, I... I don't know what to say. I... just keep doing these stupid things, and... I'm just lost. Look, if it's worth anything, I had no idea that Krista was going to call it. You guys are so good together - maybe now you can talk and hash it out, and...?
LEO: No. I'm gonna respect her wishes.
No 26
In the garden, JJ is in his boxing gear, going at Andrew's punchbag like it's trying to kill him, while Wendy and Andrew watch from a distance. Andrew has just arrived after Wendy texted him; she explains to Andrew how JJ just turned up out of the blue; she'd assumed he didn't get on the diversion programme, but he said he did, so it has to be something else that's bothering him. Andrew approaches and asks JJ what's wrong.
JJ: I'm angry (...) Do you really not know what my mums have done?
ANDREW: Pretty sure I don't.
JJ: They told me that Felix was sending my letters back because he didn't want to hear from me, he didn't care. And they were lying. They asked him not to have any contact with me - to totally reject me.
JJ goes back to hitting the bag, and Andrew stops him.
ANDREW: Hey, woah. Right or wrong...
JJ: Wrong! Wrong.
ANDREW: Look, your mums probably just wanted to protect you.
JJ: I don't need protecting from my father! I have a right to know him. They're not listening to my feelings, Andrew!
Lassiter's Complex
Krista is out for a walk when Shannon, her drug dealer, approaches.
SHANNON: Hello, stranger!
KRISTA: Look, no offence, but that's exactly what I want to be to you from now on. I'm finished with drugs.
Shannon mocks her, saying they're supposed to be friends, before trying to tempt her with some 'excellent new stuff'. Krista begins to walk away, but Shannon pursues, offering her a 20 percent discount to get back on board! Leo sees this altercation from nearby, and comes over to intervene. Krista asks Shannon to leave her alone, and Leo repeats her instruction.
SHANNON: Okay. Chill. I'm going.
Once she's gone, Krista thanks Leo, and explains Shannon's her old dealer.
LEO (bitter): Good riddance, then... It's good to see you're out of hospital. I'll see you around.
Leo walks off.
Harold's Café
Toadie and Terese have come in for a coffee. Toadie acknowledges that conversation may be awkward between them as they start hanging out again, so he suggests a 'non- talky activity' to break the ice - spying a checkers board on one of the tables. Terese agrees to it, but at this point Paul comes in.
PAUL: Ah, I heard you two were back on.
TERESE: Well, we're giving it a go.
PAUL: Congratulations. Good luck. Oh, and you're probably gonna hear it anyway, so you may as well hear it from me. Chelsea and I are getting married.
TOADIE: That's sudden.
PAUL: Well, you know... when you know, you know. You could say we're moving almost as quickly as you guys did.
Paul walks off smugly, while Terese reels. Toadie awkwardly asks her how she feels about the news.
TERESE (shrugs): Fine. They deserve each other.
She tells him to set up the checkers board, while she gets the coffee.
Erinsborough Hospital
Holly comes into Haz's room with news for Mackenzie and Byron - she's asked the police to help track down Haz's family.
HOLLY: It'll be tough cos his parents are overseas, but they're gonna do their best.
MACKENZIE: Thanks for taking that on, Holly.
BYRON: Let's hope they'll wanna know he's in hospital when we find 'em. Haz's life has always been a bit of a mystery.
HOLLY: If you think about it, he was, right from the start. Always friendly, but never wanting to get too close.
BYRON: Never wanted any serious relationships.
HOLLY: Not until you. Now we know why, all the stuff he was hiding.
MACKENZIE: But we did get close. And now we're all he has.
Mackenzie holds Haz's hand. The camera pans over and we see Byron's hand is on Haz's other.
No 30
Andrew has brought JJ home. He looks relieved to find the living room empty, but Remi and Cara come in from the sunroom and JJ immediately exits to his room. Andrew explains that JJ has been boxing at his place, and that he's told Andrew why he's so upset with them.
CARA: We were trying to protect JJ.
ANDREW: I know. I think deep down, he knows, too.
REMI: Yeah. Somehow it doesn't seem like it.
ANDREW: Look, being adopted, I completely understand what it feels like to have a curiosity about where you came from.
CARA: Did you ever track down your biological family?
ANDREW: No. But there was a time when I had a burning curiosity. I was a little older than JJ. But there was something in me that just... I had to know. And then one day, the curiosity passed.
REMI: I guess the difference is, JJ knows exactly where to find Felix. And he's made up this story in his head about why Felix behaved the way he did.
ANDREW: You're both great parents. At some point, that will win out.
Lassiter's Complex
Chelsea turns up outside the pub to bully Wendy and Aaron into getting things ready for her engagement party, and neither of them are very keen on liaising with her - but Wendy reluctantly goes to get her notepad!
CHELSEA: I saw that look.
AARON: What?
CHELSEA: I don't need, want or care for your judgement, Aaron.
AARON: Your life is none of my business, Chelsea.
CHELSEA: Except for tonight. I expect to be your sole focus. This is my moment; it's been a long time coming, and I deserve to be the woman of the hour.
We see Krista approaching with Melanie, who's in her community service vest. Chelsea's face immediately falls when she sees Krista, but Aaron notes that Krista said how good Chelsea had been to her lately, and Chelsea quickly regains her composure.
CHELSEA: I want decorations *everywhere*. Think 'too much is not enough'. This is my big night. And it's going to be everything.
No 30
JJ is grudgingly at the table with Remi, Cara and Dex for a family meeting.
REMI: We know you had a connection with Felix.
CARA: And we're not denying you have a right to know him.
REMI: But now is not the right time.
JJ: When is the time?
REMI: When you're older. When you're emotionally mature enough to navigate the person he is.
JJ: You say that like I've never met the guy! I know him. I've spent weeks hanging out with him.
CARA: Look how that ended.
JJ: ... Okay. Yeah, that ended badly.
REMI: We just can't risk Felix messing with you again.
JJ: That should be my decision. How old do I have to be to see him?
CARA: Eighteen feels like a reasonable age.
JJ: Seriously?! Well, at the very least, give him my letters so that he can respond back if he wants!
CARA: It's not a good idea either.
JJ: So you're just not gonna compromise at all? Well, what a waste of time.
JJ gets up and walks out. Cara appeals to Dex.
CARA: Please tell us you get where we're coming from.
DEX: I do... but I also get how he feels. I mean, we're different - I never think about my dad. But he does. And you can't switch that off.
The Waterhole
Paul and Krista are catching up. He tells her not to rush back to work until she's ready, as they can cover for as long as she needs.
KRISTA: Thank you.
PAUL: No thanks necessary. I'm just glad to have you back on the mend. And speaking of mending things - err, you and Leo. Dare I hope?
Krista smiles, but before she can answer, Chelsea turns up. Krista congratulates them both on their engagement - and also thanks Chelsea for helping her after her fall.
CHELSEA: You gave me a real scare. I'm just glad it all worked out.
KRISTA: Yeah, well, I'm sorry that you had to see me like that. Cos I heard that I was a lot. But I'm walking a straight line now.
CHELSEA: And I'll have your back all the way.
But as Paul and Chelsea prepare to leave to get organised for the party, Chelsea's last words trigger a flashback in Krista, of their confrontation in Chelsea's hotel room - when Chelsea also claimed that she had done nothing but 'have your back' since the sauna incident. Krista recalls telling Chelsea that she took her baby from her; and as Paul and Chelsea walk away, we zone in on a horrified Krista remembering all...
