The Waterhole
Leo calls David over in a panic to help Krista, who looks completely disorientated. Paul's angry, immediately assuming Krista has taken something but Leo says Krista believes someone spiked her drink. Sadie and Byron look on in concern, as do many other party goers, but Paul plasters on a smile and claims everything is fine, encouraging them all to keep enjoying themselves. David keeps trying to rouse Krista.
Erinsborough Hospital
David, Leo and Aaron wait in the hall while Remi shines a light into Krista's eyes and asks questions. Krista swears to Remi that she didn't take anything at the party. David feels guilty he didn't stay by Krista's side, and hopes she didn't actually relapse. Leo can't believe David would think that way, especially since Krista's been trying to get her life back on track.
DAVID: Maybe she was celebrating. Or she was self- sabotaging.
LEO: Or she was drugged.
DAVID: I just have to consider all possibilities.
Remi steps out of the room and tells them that Krista will be fine, but she wants a private word. Aaron heads back to work and Leo wants to stay, but Remi says only David is privy to the information.
REMI: I'll need tests to confirm but I think you're right. It's most likely this is the effect of some sort of opioid.
DAVID: And the baby?
REMI: Its heart rate is stable. We'll continue to monitor them both but now she just needs rest.
DAVID: And a better helper.
REMI: Hey. They'll both be okay.
DAVID: What about next time?
REMI: What? You don't believe she was drugged?
DAVID: I don't know what I believe right now.
Number 26
Andrew finishes breakfast and wishes Wendy a happy new year. Wendy says Paul wants her to head into work and make sure Krista didn't leave around any “paraphernalia”. She wonders if she should have said that in front of her cop husband but Andrew says he's not involved unless he gets called in. Wendy admits Paul's so annoyed with Krista - apparently she let in a bunch of underage kids to the party, including JJ. The Rodwells wonder if Cara and Remi are aware, just as Sadie arrives home. Sadie tiredly says that JJ was hanging out with her and Byron all night and definitely not drinking. Wendy is a little taken aback at the time Sadie has dragged herself home and reminds her she needs to open up her letter from Eden Hills Uni.
WENDY: I bet it's a reminder to take up your placement. I've got to go to work but I can help you later.
ANDREW: Wouldn't they have just emailed it?
SADIE: Yeah, I just forgot.
WENDY: Well, just open this now and start preparing for your first year. Toga, toga!
When Wendy leaves, Andrew quietly asks Sadie if everything's okay. Sadie nods and says she's merely tired from Holly goading her into partying all night.
Erinsborough Hospital
David is on the phone to Mel letting her know Krista's okay but not up for visitors right now. Leo sits by Krista's bedside, breaking into a smile when she starts to wake up. David joins them and they assure Krista that she and the baby are okay.
DAVID: Can you talk us through what happened?
KRISTA: I was talking to Leo and then Paul got stuck into me, and I suddenly felt really tired and heavy.
DAVID: And all you had was the mocktail?
KRISTA: Yes. But I knew straight away that something wasn't right.
DAVID: You didn't accidentally pick up someone else's drink or…
KRISTA: No. It was spiked.
DAVID: All right. Well, just get some rest and we'll talk later.
KRISTA: It's what happened.
LEO: Yeah. David's just trying to help.
KRISTA: (quietly) No, he thinks I'm lying.
DAVID: Just try to get some rest.
He guides Leo out into the hallway. Leo can't believe David still thinks Krista used something, but David points out there were no other cases of spiked drinks at the party.
LEO: It must have been targeted.
DAVID: Who would do that?
LEO: (angry) I can think of one person.
Lassiter's Hotel - Paul's Office
Paul speaks with Chloe on the phone, happy to hear she made it safely to Rome. He says she's missed in Erinsborough as there were certainly less disasters when she was around. Paul finishes his call as Leo strides in, all guns blazing.
LEO: I've seen you do dog acts before, but this is next level.
PAUL: If this is about me keeping Abigail up late, I didn't expect you to be out all night.
LEO: I'm talking about Krista!
PAUL: Oh yes, how is Erinsborough's favourite train wreck, hey? Taking up residence in her favourite hospital suite again?
LEO: Yeah because you put her there.
PAUL: Excuse me?
LEO: You couldn't handle her beating you over Belinda Jorgensen, so you went and spiked her drink.
PAUL: (scoffing) Leo the only person that caused Krista to behave like a footballer in Bali is Krista. If anybody should be angry it should be me.
LEO: How are you the victim here?
PAUL: Because I had to take on that unqualified basket case who can't be left alone unsupervised for more than five minutes before making a complete spectacle of herself at a crucial work function!
LEO: Yeah, right. So the same day you said she'd mess up, she did.
PAUL: I just know that you can depend on the Kristas of this world to always let you down.
LEO: Just like you.
Lassiter's Hotel - Exterior
Paul catches up to Leo as he's leaving and says he doesn't get to make accusations against him without hearing his side. Leo sneers that he's not in the mood for fiction, but Paul retorts that he didn't drug Krista. Leo doesn't care what Paul has to say, however, which makes Paul realise Leo's in quite deep.
PAUL: She has really done a number on you hasn't she. Well I suppose that's to be expected. I mean, drug addicts know how to turn on the charm when need be.
LEO: She says she was spiked and I believe her.
PAUL: Really? All right, what's more likely? That I would take such a risk, or that a party girl who happened to find out that she isn't being extradited decides to celebrate, embarrasses herself because her tolerance levels are so low and then lie?
Number 32 Backyard
Hungover Haz and Byron are chilling with their sunnies on after their big night out. Byron comments on how weird Holly was acting last night, but Haz points out she wasn't the only one. Byron admits that when he saw Krista collapse his first thought was to call Reece, but realised it wasn't his job anymore. Sadie arrives with her uni letter and says she needs advice from the boys.
SADIE: Did you mean it when you told your mum you hated law so much that you'd rather go back to escorting?
BYRON: Hundred per cent.
HAZ: What? Are you getting back in the game, mate?
BYRON: Hypothetically speaking, Haz.
SADIE: When did you feel that way?
BYRON: It's not so much that I hated law, it was the idea of doing it for the rest of my life.
SADIE: That's how I feel about childcare.
BYRON: I thought you loved babysitting?
SADIE: I do, but I don't want to spend thousands of dollars and three years studying it.
HAZ: Why did you apply then?
SADIE: I had to put something down.
HAZ: Easy. Don't do it. Problem solved.
SADIE: Not easy. Mum has her heart set on me going to uni and getting the degree that she never got.
Byron asks Sadie what she actually wants to do with her life and Sadie says she'd love to be a makeup artist.
SADIE: You know, weddings, formals, things like that.
BYRON: Hell yeah. TV, movies, prosthetics. I mean, you've got enough wedding work on Ramsay Street alone. Or just Toadfish himself.
Haz repeats that the solution is easy - just tell Wendy the truth. But Sadie says her mum will lose her mind. Byron tells Sadie that she can't go through life living it for others, she has to do what's right for her.
Number 24
Nicolette tells Aaron to stop stressing about what happened to Krista - it wasn't his fault she was drugged, it was either Krista or her spiker. Byron walks in and hesitantly asks if anyone has told Reece what happened with her sister. Aaron says no, and Krista wants to keep it that way so they're going to respect her wishes. Byron then says he found a key at the front door sticking out from underneath the mat. It has a keychain on it with an address: 721/9 Cypress Dr Essendon Fields 3041. Nicolette looks slightly shaken by the info but says it's not hers.
Number 26
Sadie is nervous when her mum gets home, but she's written out a spiel on the back of her uni letter and reads it out loud to Wendy before she changes her mind. Wendy remains unmoving while Sadie tells her that she doesn't think the childcare course is for her and doesn't want to go to uni anymore, before Wendy lets out an incredulous “What?!” She can't believe Sadie wants to keep nannying for the rest of her life, or take up some other job that has no prospects like her own.
WENDY: Most employers won't even look at someone without a degree.
SADIE: Isn't it important that I enjoy what I do for a career?
WENDY: Like what?
SADIE: A makeup artist.
WENDY: A what?
SADIE: A makeup artist. There's courses for it.
WENDY: That is not a real job.
SADIE: Don't be prejudiced, mum.
WENDY: Excuse me, I am not prejudiced. Some of my best friends are makeup artists.
SADIE: Like who?
WENDY: Like some really good people. And bless them for the work they do. But why do you have to be one?
SADIE: Well I've been thinking about it for a while, and when I got my makeup kit at Christmas it just hit me. That's what I really wanna do.
But Wendy just believes Sadie's tired and isn't thinking clearly. She encourages her to go and have a rest and they'll talk again later.
Harold's Cafe Exterior
Haz brings Nicolette a coffee just as Byron walks over. He's finishing up a call with Sadie, telling her that she'll have to try harder to make Wendy see her side. Nicolette quickly slips the key from earlier into her handbag and tells Byron she needs to borrow his car to go grocery shopping. Byron says he's between job interviews right now and can drive if she wants, but Nicolette wants to go alone.
Erinsborough Hospital
David and Aaron are in the waiting area with Andrew when Remi steps out and says Krista gave her permission to let them know there were definitely opioids in her system. Andrew says that drink spiking is really hard to prove, especially, and he's sorry to say, with Krista's track record. Remi wonders if they kept the glass Krista drank from, but Aaron says everything has been cleaned. Andrew then asks if there was anything unusual about the drugs, but Remi says they were commonplace. Leo arrives and tells them he spoke to Paul about everything, and as much as he hates to admit it, he believes that Paul had nothing to do with it.
ANDREW: Could anyone else have spiked her drink?
REMI: Who would do that?
AARON: You know there were those young kids who snuck in last night. Remember, they were hanging around the bar area.
LEO: Yeah, it could have been a prank gone wrong, or Krista kicked them out so they may have been getting payback.
ANDREW: Okay. Well who are these kids?
AARON: I didn't recognise them, but JJ might. He was there.
REMI: (surprised) JJ was at the New Year's Eve party?
Number 30
Cara has waited for Remi and Andrew to arrive before calling JJ into the kitchen so they can gang up on him together. JJ's nervous when he sees Andrew with his mums and tries to deny being at the NYE party at first before Cara points out half of Ramsay Street saw him there.
REMI: And before you suggest it, no we don't think you have a doppelgänger.
Cara thought JJ was at his mate Spencer's place having a low- key night because that's what he told them. JJ admits he went to the party but only had lemonade to drink. Andrew says he's not interested in that part, he more so wants to know who JJ was hanging out with. When Remi explains that they think Krista's drink might have been spiked by one of the teens there, JJ mumbles that he was actually hanging out with someone else (which causes Cara and Remi to exchange a curious look) but he recognised one of the kids who hassled Dex previously, Noah Dawes. Andrew gets a text from Wendy (‘Our daughter about to ruin her life. Pls call') so he excuses himself and leaves. JJ tries to skedaddle too but Remi and Cara want to know who he hung out with last night.
JJ: I was with Sadie.
REMI: Why are you hanging out with Sadie?
JJ: I don't know. We're mates.
CARA: You two aren't… together?
JJ: (awkward) No, but like down the track who knows?
CARA: No. Negative. She's too old for you. And you used to think that she was your sister! That is all kinds of wrong, mate.
Remi then takes his game console away for two weeks as punishment for lying about the pub.
Erinsborough Hospital
Leo tells Krista about the theory of the underage kids spiking her drink. Krista smiles and wonders if everyone believes her now, and Leo says they do - the people who count, anyway. Sincere, Krista thanks him for believing her. She knows it's not always the easiest thing to do.
LEO: I have to admit I did have some doubts after I spoke to dad. But I thought about it and I know you'd never put your baby at risk.
KRISTA: How can you be so sure?
LEO: Well, I'm a psychic.
KRISTA: How really?
LEO: I just am.
KRISTA: (sharing a soft smile with him) Thank you.
Number 26
Wendy rants to Andrew about Sadie's decision and promises him she's not frustrated because of her own life choices, she's just concerned about their daughter. Andrew feels as though they need to let Sadie make her own choices, which Wendy agrees with - provided they're the right ones! Otherwise they need to step in and make them for her!
WENDY: Do you really want our daughter to pursue a profession where there are hardly any jobs?
ANDREW: There are jobs.
WENDY: She just likes the idea of there being ‘artist' in the title. It is a pipe dream.
ANDREW: I think there is a lot more to it than that.
WENDY: Well why take the risk?
ANDREW: Look, are you sure this isn't just a little bit about you and what you told me of how you feel like you've never had the career that you wanted?
WENDY: No, it's not about that. I just don't want Sadie to make a huge life- wrecking mistake.
ANDREW: We want her to be happy, right? And to be honest I think she feels like getting herself locked into something for three years is really scary.
WENDY: Well what do I do?
ANDREW: Talk to her. But maybe try a different approach.
Essendon Fields Apartment Exterior
Nicolette parks out the front of an apartment building that the mystery key belongs to and makes a call to someone on her phone named Sasha McLain. But the call doesn't go through as the number is no longer connected. Nicolette decides to go into the building anyway.
Number 26
Sadie is relieved at first when Wendy apologises for how their conversation went earlier. But then she panics when her mum says she's decided to help by enrolling Sadie into herself - Sadie can choose her own electives though.
SADIE: No.
WENDY: Oh, well I can do that for you.
SADIE: No, I mean I'm not going to uni.
WENDY: Sade, I get that you're scared, but our role as your parents is to make sure that you have a wonderful and a successful life. And you can only do that if you go to uni.
SADIE: (incredulous) You can't make me go, I'm not a child!
WENDY: Well you're not a real adult either, and… Until you go out into that real world, you don't know how tough it is.
SADIE: But what about what I want?
WENDY: This is why I've waited for you to select your electives.
SADIE: (frustrated) I can't do this right now.
So Wendy takes it upon herself to choose the electives for her. Sadie panics and tells her to delete it, but it's done. Wendy assures her she'll be thanking her in a few months, but Sadie begs to differ.
SADIE: If you can't respect me being an adult, then I have no business here! (She rips up her uni letter) I'm moving out!
Essendon Fields Apartment
Nicolette uses the key to get into a room. She calls out but the room is empty save for a black shopping bag sitting on the bed. When Nicolette looks inside she finds red lingerie and looks concerned. Nicolette rushes out of the building carrying the bag and heads to the car. A woman lurks by the building and watches her leave with a smirk on her face.
