Lassiters Hotel - Reece's Room
Reece shows Byron a photo of her half- sister, Krista, on her phone. They're related via her father's third marriage and Reece wasn't allowed to tell anyone Krista was missing.
REECE: Krista's a wild child. Drugs, alcohol, you name it. She's gone off the radar before, usually to punish us. But she's never been gone for this long.
BYRON: So she's a missing person?
REECE: No, it's a pattern. She's probably off somewhere living it up. Finding new ways to create a scandal for our family. That's why we can't involve the police. I love you, but I love Krista too. It's taken me a while to remember that, but I do.
Lassiters Hotel - Paul's Office
Terese chides Paul for staring into space, then hands over the new contract for leasing out the old real estate office. Paul asks if Toadie's okay with everything and Terese says he's fine now it's all above board. Terese then finds out Paul is distracted because of Reece. He can't figure out what her 'market research project' is really about. Their chat is cut short when Terese receives a text message that leaves her happily stunned.
Harold's Cafe
Jane tentatively approaches Susan and asks if she'll forgive her over her paranoia about the school. Susan says there's no need, but in the interest of full disclosure admits that Harold's thinking about buying one of the apartments when they're built. Jane's a bit disheartened but then suggests they read some nice comments about the school on social media to cheer them up. Susan is concerned, though, when Jane appears to get an upsetting text message.
SUSAN: You all right?
JANE: No. No I'm not. It's the education department - they have accepted Terese's offer. The school will close at the end of the year.
Lassiters Hotel - Reece's Room
Byron wonders why it took Reece so long to realise she actually cared about Krista. Reece says it clicked when she found Krista's matching necklace - they're from her grandmother on her dad's side. "Krista was the sun, and I was the moon," Reece adds, showing Byron the jewellery. Byron also wants to know who the mystery woman was at the tram.
REECE: Her name is Tess. She's second- in- line at the Sincast Corp. She's here because I've been taking too long with my mission.
BYRON: And how do you know Krista stayed here?
REECE: Well, this was her last known correspondence. She asked me to give her more money and I said no.
Reece shows Byron the Lassiters Hotel postcard Krista sent her. The message reads: 'Thanks for nothing. You were never a sister to me anyway.' All Reece knows so far is that Krista was using a fake name, Kelly Miller, and that she used some facilities at the hotel. "I just want to know if she was okay," Reece sighs. "I'm really glad you told me," Byron replies, putting his hand over hers. "Because now I can be there for you."
Harold's Cafe
JJ and Dex freeze at the doorway when they see Andrew at the counter. Dex thinks they should go, but JJ wants to apologise for bailing on Andrew. Dex doesn't think it's a good idea but of course JJ doesn't listen and goes over to the counter. Andrew is kind with JJ when he says sorry, and understands that seeing the smashed car window would've left him unsettled. "But you could have told me," he adds with a wry grin. "I would have got it."
JJ: I'm fine now. I just wanted to let you know I'm sorry.
ANDREW: I get it. Maybe once the dust has settled I could take you for another driving lesson.
JJ: You'd want to?
ANDREW: Definitely. If something's working, stick at it. It's another one of my dad's lessons.
JJ smiles, while Dex looks quite unimpressed with the whole exchange.
Number 30
Cara shows Remi the security cameras she bought, one for the front of house and one for the back. Remi thinks it's lucky she married a handywoman, but Cara smiles and says she's the lucky one. "I can't believe you haven't once said I told you so," she adds, kissing Remi. "We don't know they're involved for sure," Remi says, reassuring her about the Linwell brothers. But Cara thinks it's highly likely they are given the WorkSafe hearing coming up. The boys arrive home and Remi and Cara remind them to be extra vigilant whenever they're out, just in case. This also means no more driving lessons for JJ for a while.
JJ: What about a police escort? (Off Cara's odd look) Andrew offered to give me some more driving lessons.
DEX: Which you turned down.
CARA: He was out of line doing that.
JJ: He wasn't interfering.
CARA: Sounds like he was.
JJ: It'd just be like parallel parking and stuff.
CARA: He had no right to suggest it after I told him to back off.
JJ: Mum!
CARA: The answer is no. We have nothing to do with that family, okay?
Lassiters Hotel - Reece's Room
Reece finds documents Tina from the day spa left her. Turns out Krista filled out a form before one of her treatments and left an email on there but no permanent address. Byron thinks they could show Krista's photo around the complex to see if anyone recognises her, but the last thing Reece wants is for Paul to become more suspicious. "Maybe I could make some subtle inquiries," Byron muses, "leave your name out of it." Reece gives him a fond smile, telling him how amazing he is. But Byron knows just how complicated families can be - he's wanted to lose Nicolette a time or two before. He asks Reece to go through every bit of information with him again.
Number 22
Toadie and Terese have a celebratory drink over the good news about the department accepting her offer. Terese still has to get the idea through the council, though, but Toadie says at least the first hurdle is done. The mood deflates when Jane (and Susan) stop by to see them. "Celebrating already," Jane says, noting the drinks. "Why aren't I surprised?" Terese knows this wasn't the outcome Jane and Susan were hoping for, but Jane says she's not there to rant and rave anymore.
JANE: I just hope that you know what it is that you have done. Fifty years of learning, of developing, of helping young people to become valuable contributors to our society. (She points at a sheepish Toadie) People like you. All of that is going to end.
TERESE: For the record I had nothing to do with the timing.
JANE: Well, you have won. And I just hope that you feel good about that.
Number 26 Backyard
Andrew is cleaning the BBQ when Cara comes to see him. He was just about to call her with an update on the Linwell brothers - turns out they're extremely worried about the WorkSafe hearing, and Cara's family haven't been the only ones on the receiving end of intimidation tactics. Wendy loiters around the corner when she hears them talking and becomes very concerned when she overhears that the Linwell brothers are the main suspects for the car vandalism. While the news is worrying, Cara says she's still not going to take her name off the witness list for the hearing. Wendy scurries back inside.
ANDREW: I've organised regular patrols of the street and I'll keep an eye out too.
CARA: Thank you.
ANDREW: I really am trying to help.
CARA: I know, which makes it hard for me to say what I came over to say.
ANDREW: Let me guess. JJ mentioned my offer.
CARA: I asked you to back off.
ANDREW: I'm not trying to overstep, but he's a good kid and our families got off to a really bad start. And if there's anything I can do to fix things, I seriously would love the chance.
Cara gives him a brief nod before heading back home.
Lassiters Hotel - Reece's Room
Byron asks if he can use Reece's laptop to check on something he found in a document. He says he can log into the hotel's booking database using his work ID. Reece is intrigued when Byron looks up a specific code, which means at one stage Krista paid for parking. They need CCTV footage. Reece admits she already asked Cara about it, but found out it gets erased after three months. "No, not the garage," Byron smiles, "they keep it for longer." The only way to access it is via Paul's computer, but Byron has Paul's login and thinks he can do it.
Number 26 Backyard
Andrew isn't pleased when he finds out Wendy overheard some of his conversation with Cara, but Wendy just wants to know how bad the situation is. Andrew makes her promise to keep everything a secret, then tells her about Cara calling in unsafe work practices she'd witnessed from the Linwell brothers. Wendy looks nervous when Andrew says that he thinks they're the ones harassing the Varga- Murphys. "There's still this question of how these guys tracked the family down," Andrew adds. "How dangerous are they?" Wendy asks. "And are they going to be safe?" She doesn't look too relieved when her husband promises her it'll all be okay.
Number 30
JJ is chuffed when Cara says she let Andrew know the driving lessons were back on, but Dex looks angry. JJ promises his mum he'll take the lessons seriously, then heads out to the sunroom with his brother. Remi chuckles and asks what changed Cara's mind. "I might be coming around on Andrew a tiny bit," Cara admits. "He's really making an effort with our situation." Remi smirks and calls Cara a big softie.
In the sunroom, Dex glares at his brother. JJ says the driving lessons are no big deal, and neither is getting to know Andrew a little more. But Dex is angry and says if this blows up their family, it's all JJ's fault.
Number 24/Scotland
Sam tells Jane she's sorry about the school news, and Susan says she put up a good fight. Jane's upset that she thought being principal was her chance at redemption, but six months into the role and the school's about to close. Susan promises that Jane will find a new chapter somewhere - she believes it for herself too. Jane gets a video call from Mike, so Susan leaves her and Sam to some privacy.
Mike's in Scotland somewhere and cheekily asks Jane how her hangover was after the vineyard incident. He then informs them that when he took his motorbike back he was offered a job as a tour guide for the next three to four months. Mike of course said no, though, as he's keen to get back to his wonderful fiancee. This makes Jane start to cry and she says she's got some news for him about the school.
Lassiters Hotel - Paul's Office
Byron looks at footage on Paul's laptop while Reece double checks no one is in the corridor. Byron has bad news for her - the footage from the garage only dates back eleven months. While he tries something different, Reece picks up a framed photo of Jim Robinson on the desk, giving the man an intrigued look. Byron then sighs in frustration after hitting another dead end, but Reece says at least they know Krista had a car at one point.
Number 24/Scotland
Jane finishes telling Mike about the school situation and how she'll soon be unemployed. She then thinks Mike should reconsider the tour guide offer, which surprises him. Jane believes the months will go quick and perhaps her and Sam could join him overseas for Christmas, which excites Sam. Then they could stay on while Mike finishes the job and see some of his great granddad's old haunts. "It does sound like a pretty good plan," Mike concedes. "I'm just going to miss you a lot." Jane says she'll miss him too but she's not much fun to be around at the moment and wants him to live out one of his dreams.
Lassiters Hotel - Paul's Office
Paul returns to grab his laptop and notices the photo of his dad is at an odd angle. With a brief look of confusion, he fixes it and leaves.
Number 32
Byron and Reece watch TV on the couch together.
Number 24
Sam flicks through a magazine on the couch while Jane sits and contemplates the heavy day she's had.
Number 22
Toadie gives Terese a cuddle on the sofa when he sees her mulling over the day's events.
Number 30
JJ looks guilty when Dex can't stop glaring at him across the room.
Number 26 Backyard
Wendy stares into the night sky, upset over her role at bringing the Linwell brothers back into the Varga- Murphys lives.
Ramsay Street
The next morning Byron emerges from Number 32 with Reece, both pleased she decided to stay the night. Reece says it was the best sleep she'd had in weeks because she was so relieved to have shared her Krista secret with him. Byron asks about Tess and Reece knows she'll be back soon to harass her.
REECE: Makes me wonder what it would have been like growing up here.
BYRON: Yeah, Ramsay Street isn't as peaceful as it looks. After all, Paul used to live here.
REECE: Enough said.
They wave at Remi who is out collecting the mail. "It really has a great sense of community though," Reece says. "I thought that the first time I came here." Byron smiles then says they should resume the search for Krista.
Number 30
Cara is chatting with the boys in the kitchen when Remi comes back with the post. Remi's excited that they've received their first bit of mail with their new address on it. She accidentally gives herself a paper cut on the envelope as she opens it, then her blood runs cold when a heap of white powder spills out onto the table. Remi urgently calls for Cara, who also becomes alarmed when she surveys the scene.
REMI: Get the kids out of the house now.
