As with the rest of this week's episodes so far, there is only a title card today, with no opening theme or credits.
The Penthouse
Paul is moaning to Leo about how Shane was supposed to be partnering with him, but now he's threatening to rip the entire hotel from under him.
LEO: It was pretty cheeky of him to do it over a game of blackjack.
PAUL: He knew I'd never go for it. And this is just his way of saying he wants everything or nothing. Terese obviously got in his ear. Here was me thinking that she was putting in a good word.
LEO: Yeah, he did do a bit of digging with me as well (...) I just said he should set some firm boundaries if you guys go ahead. Well, I thought it would help the both of you guys. So what are the options now?
PAUL: I dunno.
At this point, Lucy walks in! She's surprised by Paul's unenthused reaction to her arrival.
LEO: Yeah, look, there have been some developments.
PAUL: Let's call it a classic Ramsay move.
LUCY: Oh...
No 24
Mackenzie, Kiri and Freya are discussing the for-sale sign that's gone up outside the house, but none of them know what's going on. Chloe comes in, offering 'a zillion apologies' for what's happened, and confirming she does want to sell the house.
KIRI: So, this isn't a huge mistake, then?
CHLOE: No... but the sign was premature. I wanted to tell you first.
MACKENZIE: (...) I thought us living together was going well? What changed?
CHLOE: My outlook... When I was in Adelaide, I did a lot of thinking. And I decided I need to move on. I know this decision impacts all of you. I really wanted to tell you in person.
MACKENZIE: Does Aaron know?
FREYA: Yeah, have you quit your job?
CHLOE: No - and not yet.
Kiri asks if the decision is because of their almost-relationship, but Chloe assures her it isn't to do with that - cryptically adding that she has 'other reasons'. Visibly not too happy with the situation, Kiri gets a text from Glen and rushes off for dinner at No 22.
CHLOE: I hate doing this to you.
MACKENZIE: You've got to do what's right for you. I just don't know where that leaves us.
No 22
On the patio, Glen, Terese and Kiri are finishing dinner. Glen and Terese have told Kiri about the possibility of their buying River Bend; they wanted to see how she felt, as Glen says there's scope for her to be involved. Kiri's not sure how to take it, still knocked for six by the news that Chloe is selling No 24. Glen suggests they could all head for a day trip to River Bend tomorrow. Kiri and Terese agree.
At this juncture, there's another surprise arrival - Terese's one-time stepdaughter, Paige. Terese leaps up, thrilled to see her.
PAIGE: Guess who? Your face!
TERESE (squeals): What a lovely surprise!
Terese introduces Paige to Glen and Kiri; Paige explains she's come without husband Mark and the kids, for a work trip. Terese is intrigued as to what work has brought Paige here, but Kiri takes this moment to announce she's heading home, explaining about No 24 being sold.
PAIGE: Yeah, that sign was not supposed to go up until tomorrow.
TERESE: What? How did you know Chloe was selling her house?
Paige is about to explain...
No 24
Some time later, Paige has returned to No 24 with Kiri, for an exposition session, whereby Mackenzie, Kiri and Freya learn that Paige is Chloe's sister-in-law. Paige is now seemingly a real estate agent, and had arranged for the for-sale sign to go up tomorrow, but says the tradie she hired must have jumped the gun.
FREYA: Hey, were you guys on the same flight back from Adelaide?
CHLOE (evasive): No, uh, I was on an earlier one.
Paige gives Chloe a funny look. Chloe changes the subject, asking how David and Aaron have been doing while she's away, and musing that she needs to tell them about the sale. Paige continues to look suspicious.
The Waterhole
Paul and Lucy come in, discussing Shane's proposed bid for the hotel. Lucy's keen on the idea of Shane as a partner, so Paul tells her they need to try and salvage the idea, so that he can use the part-buyout to fund his divorce settlement with Terese. They approach Shane, who's alone at a table. He gets up to shake Lucy's hand.
SHANE: It's been a long time.
LUCY: Yes! Over thirty years.
SHANE: You look great - although, I have to admit, I wouldn't have recognised you (...) Little Lucy's grown up!
LUCY: So, how do we get you to reconsider a partnership?
SHANE: Sorry - it's not personal.
PAUL: You know, you can't just listen to Terese.
SHANE: I didn't. Tim Collins put together quite a report.
PAUL: Tim Collins! You know, you can't trust a word that comes out of that crook's mouth. Or his newspaper.
LUCY: Mm, I have to agree. Tim does have a vendetta against Paul.
SHANE: I spoke to other people, too. Credible, balanced sources.
PAUL: Really? Who are we talking about?
SHANE: It's not important, Paul.
PAUL: Yeah, it is. If you're gonna back out of a contract that's great for both of us, I'd really like to know who's gotten in your ear.
No 32
Jane is sitting alone on the sofa, while Chloe sits with David, Aaron and Nicolette at the table.
AARON (to Chloe): You're leaving?! Just like that?
CHLOE: I know it's a shock. But honestly, it's been brewing for a while.
DAVID: We thought you were happy here.
CHLOE: I am... mostly. But work hasn't been the same since Terese left. And while I was away with the fam, I suddenly thought to myself, what am I doing with my life? Please don't be mad, big bro...
AARON: I'm not, I'm just... my loss is Mark and Ty's gain. I'm just... I'm gonna miss you.
Chloe hugs Aaron. David notices Jane's very distracted, and asks if she's okay. Nicolette explains to Chloe that Jane and Clive have split up. At this point, Paul comes in, angrily shouting Jane's name.
PAUL: What the hell is your problem?
JANE: I beg your pardon?!
PAUL: I've just heard from Shane what you told him about me.
NICOLETTE: Why don't you dial it down a notch?
JANE: No, it's alright, Nicolette. When Shane asked me if he should go into business with you, I was honest.
PAUL: Oh, well, thank you (!) Because of you, he is now seeking out every person in this suburb who has a grudge against me!
JANE: Well, that's a full-time job!
PAUL: Oh, hardy-ha-ha. You know what? He doesn't just want to be in partnership anymore - he wants the whole damn hotel! You know, Jane, I have been trying to repair our friendship. But I'm done. I can't forgive you for this.
Jane looks a little shaken as Paul strops off.
Ramsay Street
The next day, Terese is with Paige, looking at the for-sale sign outside No 24. Terese approves of Paige's new career direction; Paige says Terese has been her inspiration.
TERESE: I am so proud of you. And I'm sure Lauren will be, too.
PAIGE: (...) You and Glen, you're going well?
TERESE: Yeah, so far... What's that look for?
PAIGE: I dunno, I just... I thought that Paul was going to be your forever man.
Kiri appears, unseen by them, and listens to what's being said.
TERESE: Paige! Paul and I will always have a connection. It's just... it's just not healthy. Things are just easier with Glen.
PAIGE (pulls a face): Easier?!
TERESE: What?
PAIGE: Do you love him?
Terese doesn't answer, but at this stage, Glen himself appears, and asks if Terese is ready to head to River Bend. Terese and Paige agree to catch up later, and Kiri then moves down the drive, to join Glen and Terese for their trip. However, Kiri is now silently concerned by what she's heard between Paige and Terese.
No 32
David and Aaron are curled up in bed together. David begins to wake up. Aaron admits he can't stop thinking about Chloe leaving, reflecting he'll be the last of his family on Ramsay Street.
DAVID: Hey, you'll always have me and Isla.
AARON: Yeah, I know, I know. You know what I mean.
Aaron cuddles up to David.
DAVID: If this is what's right for Chloe, we can't stand in her way. Sometimes you have no choice but to move forward.
AARON: Hey, you know everything's gonna be okay for you, too, right?
We learn David's seeing a recruitment specialist, who's going to help him figure out what to do career-wise. Aaron strokes David's hair and kisses him.
AARON: You know, you have a brain the size of a planet. You could do anything. Or, you could trade on your looks. You really could - you could be an exotic dancer! You could be a life-drawing model...
This cheers David up. He turns to face Aaron and they hold one another.
DAVID: I think I'll save that for your eyes only.
AARON: Hey - I love you, Boo.
DAVID: I love you more.
They go in for a pash.
River Bend
Glen and Terese are looking out over the lake, while Kiri sits nearby. She's brought along some documents from her parents - plans to improve and expand the facilities at the retreat - and hands them to Terese. Kiri explains the development was all council-approved, but cashflow problems meant her parents never went ahead with the plans. Glen is buoyed as Terese seems impressed by the plans.
GLEN: Someone's sounding tempted.
TERESE: Yeah. Maybe...
Terese walks off to keep looking around.
GLEN: Is it weird for you, me being here?
KIRI: No, it's not that. If anything, that part's kind of healing.
GLEN: Anything else on your mind?
Kiri seems to hesitate, but then says no, and suggests they carry on the tour.
No 32
On the patio, Aaron is playing with Isla, while Jane is looking sadly at pictures of Clive on her phone. Nicolette comes out with a breakfast tray.
NICOLETTE: Don't tell me you've let Paul get to you?
JANE: No, I'm just feeling sorry for myself.
As Jane and Nicolette go inside, Paige turns up, and immediately starts fussing over Isla, her niece. Aaron jokes that Paige has come to steal Chloe from them and take her back to Adelaide.
PAIGE: No stealing, I swear!
AARON: So, Mark and Ty didn't go and put the hard word on her?
PAIGE: Nobody did. I was surprised she made the decision, too.
AARON: You have no idea what she's planning to do over there?
PAIGE: ... Look, if you want details, you're gonna have to ask her yourself.
Lassiter's Hotel
In the office, Lucy is meeting with Shane for a second time. He makes it clear he doesn't intend to change his mind about going into a partnership with Paul. Lucy says that's not why she's asked him here.
LUCY: As much as I love my brother, I respect your decision.
Meanwhile, Paul and Leo are heading towards the office along the corridor outside. When they enter, Paul demands to know what Lucy and Shane are meeting about.
LUCY: I am just having a very preliminary chat to Shane in case you decide to sell, just to save me another trip.
PAUL: Sounds like jumping the gun.
SHANE: I want to keep this friendly. (to Paul) But you know that you won't find anyone else to partner with, if they do the same digging that I did. And I assume you still want the money.
Paul looks worried as Shane walks out.
River Bend
Terese is still talking relatively enthusiastically about the business opportunities at the retreat, saying there's certainly room to build a hotel and villas. Glen makes enthusiastic contributions, but Kiri still seems worried, presumably about what Glen is getting into, having overheard Terese talking to Paige.
TERESE: You know what? I'm getting ahead of myself. We're hours away from home.
GLEN: But we wouldn't have to be, if it *was* home.
TERESE: What, are you suggesting we move here?
GLEN: Well, it doesn't make sense to commute.
TERESE: Hold on, whoa, whoa. There's one thing to propose buying a business, but to pack up our whole lives and move to the bush? ... I mean, that's not on my radar.
GLEN: But it could be. A lot of people make a tree change these days. It could be a whole new lease on life.
Glen suggests they continue with the tour, but Terese now looks far less enthusiastic - and Kiri even more concerned than before. As Terese walks on, Glen asks Kiri again if everything's okay.
KIRI: Yeah, I'm just thinking about our jobs, and Nicolette.
GLEN: That can be sorted out.
KIRI: ... Do you think you're rushing this? Maybe it's got something to do with Terese and Paul? (...) You were uncomfortable with her helping him out. Is this move about getting her away from him?
GLEN: No, it's just a great opportunity for Terese - for you, for us. That's all there is to it.
But Kiri looks unconvinced.
The Penthouse / No 32 / New York
Leo has summoned Paul urgently, and asks him to take a seat in front of the computer, while Leo goes out onto the balcony, where he has his phone set up on a tripod. Paul soon sees that Leo has set up a group video chat, and greets David, who is at home, and the third participant in the chat along with Paul and Leo themselves.
PAUL: Is there something wrong? I mean, you could've just come over?
LEO: Well, we've got a few others joining us.
One by one, three of Paul's other four surviving kids pop onto the screen.
ELLE ROBINSON: Surprise!
PAUL: Elle?
ANDREW ROBINSON: What's up, Dad?
AMY WILLIAMS: G'day from New York!
PAUL: Amy, Andrew - what's going on? It's not my birthday!
ANDREW: No, but Leo sent out an SOS.
ELLE: I thought you might've been trying to get hitched again, so I'd have needed another intervention.
PAUL (laughs): Yeah, no chance of that.
AMY: We heard things are up in the air with the hotel.
ANDREW: Yeah, Dad, we just wanted to put a little smile on your face.
PAUL: Well, you've certainly done that - thanks, guys.
Paul asks what's going on with all of them.
PAUL: Andrew, how's Tash?
ANDREW: She's awesome. We just spent a weekend in the Hamptons together.
AMY: So fancy.
ELLE: Oh, you can talk, Ames. This one just landed the contract to an Upper East Side redevelopment.
PAUL: You didn't! Amy, that is brilliant news - good on you!
AMY: I mean, the apartments will be super-glamorous. The construction process - hmm, not so much!
ANDREW: Neither's driving Jimmy and Maya around, but you're happy to do that.
DAVID: What? Can't they just catch the subway?
AMY: People get mugged in the subway.
ELLE: That's what I keep saying!
Paul laughs, very much buoyed to be able to check in with all his kids.
River Bend
Kiri, Glen and Terese are by the lake. Terese is now thinking about a space for open-air concerts here. Kiri heads off to thank the current owners for letting them look around, leaving Glen and Terese to talk. Terese remarks that she thought Kiri would be keener than she seems on a return to River Bend. Glen tells Terese that Kiri just doesn't want to get her hopes up, in case it all falls through.
TERESE: True. I mean, I don't even know if it's feasible.
GLEN: (...) I know you love Ramsay Street, but you've lived other places. Darwin, Perth... this could be your next home.
TERESE: Yeah, maybe. I guess I've just got to weigh it all up.
GLEN (sighs): Yeah, of course you do.
TERESE: Why are you so keen?
GLEN: I love you. I just want you to be happy.
TERESE: Hm. Well, you've made a strong case.
But Glen looks despondent that Terese isn't yet fully convinced.
The Penthouse / No 32 / New York
Paul's video chat with his kids continues, as he asks what else is going on with them.
ANDREW: Has Amy told you about her new man yet?
PAUL: No! Kept that one under your hat, didn't you?
AMY: Because it's all very recent.
ELLE: Very steamy, from what I hear.
AMY: Stop, I'm blushing! Why don't you tell them about your new feature article, Elle?
ANDREW: (...) Look out for her on next year's Pulitzer's list. Guarantee it.
ELLE: Don't go overboard. I went to the Met with Donna the other day, and she said to say hello.
PAUL: Ah, that's lovely! Always a bit of a firecracker, that one.
ANDREW: I went too. It was good to see her.
LEO: You went to the Met? Since when do you like going to museums?
ANDREW: Art. I like culture (!)
AMY: Don't be coy. Tell Dad the real reason.
ANDREW: I went to put a tender in for their rooftop bar.
LEO: Well, that's amazing! We always love going there for cocktails.
DAVID: Wait - it seems you guys catch up a lot?
AMY: Yeah. Since we reconnected, we all try to catch up when we can?
ANDREW: Family's the most important thing, right, Dad?
PAUL: Oh, hear, hear.
LEO: I miss you guys. And I miss living in New York. I mean, no offence to Erinsborough, but it really is the best city in the world, by a mile.
AMY: Would you ever consider coming back?
LEO: Oh, yeah, in a heartbeat. I'd love Abi to see where her roots are.
ANDREW: We can reinstate Robinson's Cocktail Fridays if you want?
ELLE: Woohoo!
AMY: Yes!
DAVID: What, that's a thing? I feel like I've missed out on so much.
PAUL: Tell me about it.
ANDREW: Hey, Dad - look, call me crazy, but if you're thinking about selling the hotel... why don't you just move here?
ELLE: What's stopping *all* of you from moving here?
DAVID (laughs): Could you imagine? The whole Robinson clan in the Big Apple?
PAUL: I don't think New York would know what had hit it.
AMY: You know, it's not the most insane thing I've ever heard.
DAVID: Except for the whole job thing - we've got lives here.
LEO: And responsibilities.
DAVID: I have a husband and a daughter...
ELLE: Who might love a fresh start!
DAVID: It would be huge...
PAUL: Guys, I grew up here. I mean, my community's here.
ANDREW: Community's not really about the place, though, is it?
AMY: Yeah, it's about the people you share it with.
ELLE: (...) Manhattan could be a great place to retire.
ANDREW: I promise you, I will keep your favourite Scotch at the rooftop bar. Promise.
Paul looks like he might be seriously beginning to consider what his kids are suggesting...
Lassiter's Complex
Outside the hotel, Paul surveys his waning empire in slow motion, looking very pensive as he walks around the courtyard. As the slow-mo fades, he encounters Glen and Terese, who tell him they're just back from River Bend.
PAUL: Ah. Bit of a short getaway, wasn't it?
GLEN: Oh, it was more of a fact-finding mission.
Terese looks uncomfortable, before eventually telling Paul that she's considering buying River Bend.
PAUL: Ah, I see. Putting the settlement money to good use. Mind you, it's a bit of a long commute, though, isn't it?
TERESE: ... Well, if it goes ahead, I'll probably move out there.
Both Paul and Terese try to play down the import of this, but both look regretful.
PAUL: Right. Yeah. Well, I mean, you should do it. It sounds absolutely perfect. I'm thinking about a bit of a change myself - you know, selling the whole hotel to Shane, and joining the kids in New York.
TERESE (disconcerted): I... I thought you were gonna be partners with Shane.
PAUL: Well, it turns out he doesn't want to work with me. And the kids want me over there, so...
Terese and Glen go on their way, but neither Terese nor Paul look pleased about what they've learned about one another's plans - and glance back wistfully at each other as she departs with Glen...
