No 24
Hendrix carries Mackenzie over the threshold.
MACKENZIE: You're going to hurt yourself!
HENDRIX: Don't you know how incredibly strong your husband is?
But she insists he put her down, reminding him he can't afford to be injured right now.
MACKENZIE: But, I appreciate the gesture. It was the perfect end to a perfect night. Yeah, it was pretty amazing. Almost as amazing as being married to you.
They kiss.
HENDRIX: And, uh, the fact that we seem to have the house to ourselves.
MACKENZIE: On what is technically our honeymoon.
They kiss again, but at that point Toadie and Melanie turn up, fresh from the flight back from their holiday in the USA.
TOADIE: Hey, are you decent?
MELANIE: Only just, by the look of it! (seal-laugh)
Toadie promises they aren't staying long; they're just here to drop around a wedding gift. Mel is keen to stay and see them open it, but Mackenzie explains they're saving the unwrapping of their presents until after Hendrix's operation.
HENDRIX: It'll be like another party - a way to celebrate once it's all over.
MELANIE: (...) Well, as long as you tell us what you think of ours. Spoiler alert - you're gonna love it! (seal-laugh)
Toadie and Mel leave them to it. Hendrix then sees a note from Chloe with a pair of blindfolds, saying she and Kiri have arranged a surprise for them; they'll be home soon to explain.
MACKENZIE: Intriguing.
HENDRIX: Yeah, as are the blindfolds.
MACKENZIE: Well, I'm game if you are, husband.
HENDRIX: After you, wife.
No 22
Terese and Estelle are having coffee on the patio, as Terese tells her mum about yesterday's wedding, and what a happy day it was. Terese moves Estelle's handbag off the table, and the strap goes again - Estelle reminding her daughter it's because she refused to buy her a new bag! But the diamond bracelet from Paul has also fallen out. Surprised having not seen it before, Terese asks Estelle where she got it.
ESTELLE: It's from an ex, a horrible man. I guess I don't like being reminded of him.
TERESE: Well, maybe you should sell it. I mean, it's obviously expensive, and clearly it doesn't have any sentimental value. You could get some cash for it. Even get a new bag!
ESTELLE: Still against the idea of chipping in, I see.
TERESE: That's not what I said.
Lassiter's Complex
Chloe and Kiri convene in the courtyard, and Chloe remarks that Kiri is still in yesterday's clothes.
CHLOE: Don't tell me this is a walk of shame!
KIRI: The only person who should be ashamed is the one who convinced me to stay at the hotel and then ditched me.
CHLOE: That person sounds terrible!
Chloe hands Kiri a large peppermint tea, as requested, and it begins to dawn on us that Kiri is talking about Chloe herself.
Nearby at a table outside Harold's, Jane asks Nicolette how things went with Asher last night. Nicolette says they kissed, but adds that she still thinks she has a chance with Kiri.
NICOLETTE: We were totally vibing last night.
JANE: Are you sure, darling?
NICOLETTE: Yes, Mum, I wasn't imagining things! I just... don't know what to do about it.
Over by the pond...
KIRI: Why didn't you wake me up?
CHLOE: Well, you looked so adorable sleeping, I didn't want to.
Chloe gives Kiri a muffin! Kiri says she's going to head home to get changed, but they agree to meet back here shortly, sharing an awkward hug before she goes. Nicolette witnesses this from afar.
NICOLETTE: That's what Kiri wore to the wedding! (...) The only reason she'd stay at the hotel is if she was... staying with someone else.
JANE: Someone like Chloe.
Nicolette looks upset, but gets her phone out and says there's no reason now for her not to give Asher a call.
No 22
Estelle is in the living room, doing her nails and making a mess as usual. She's had a text for Paul inviting her to a fancy lunch, on him. But she puts her phone down as Terese comes in.
ESTELLE: I'll clean up after myself, don't worry.
TERESE: I'm not. What I am worried about though, is, umm... is the way we keep upsetting each other. It's like, one step forward, two steps back. And maybe I wasn't as clear as I thought I was when I told you I wanted things to be better between us.
ESTELLE: I want that too.
Glen appears at the top of the stairs, but doesn't descend - just listens.
TERESE: Look, I know that we can get past this. I know it's gonna take some time. So I was wondering if maybe we could talk about... you staying here long-term.
ESTELLE: Are you sure? I don't want you offering anything you'll regret.
TERESE: I think we'll have regrets if we don't manage to sort things out. And I think living here will give us a good shot at it.
ESTELLE (happily): I agree.
From his vantage point at the top of the stairs, Glen looks less enthused!
Lassiter's Hotel
Chloe and Kiri have Mackenzie and Hendrix blindfolded and are leading them into one of the hotel rooms, which they've arranged for them as their surprise for the honeymoon. They take off the blindfolds.
CHLOE: Perks of being the assistant manager! It's not the honeymoon suite, but it's all yours for the day.
Mackenzie and Hendrix are thrilled and thank them. Chloe says it was mostly Kiri's idea.
MACKENZIE: You guys make a mind-blowing duo.
Kiri and Chloe look awkward, after their night together.
Lassiter's Complex
Estelle, Terese and Glen are walking towards Harold's. Estelle asks Glen how he feels about her moving in, remarking that he hasn't said much. Diplomatically, he says it's Terese's decision and that he'll support what she wants. Estelle sees Paul across the courtyard, and makes the excuse that she's left the phone in the car, telling Terese and Glen to go into the café without her while she retrieves it.
Once they've gone inside, Estelle makes a beeline for Paul.
ESTELLE: Apologies for not getting back to you. You must think I'm very rude.
PAUL: Oh, no, not at all. In fact, you can make it up to me over lunch. I booked us a table at the Terrace.
ESTELLE: That's lovely, but I'm having coffee with Terese and Glen.
PAUL: Oh, how about tomorrow then? I've got a couple of tickets for the state theatre, and you can be my date.
ESTELLE: It's been a long time since I've seen a live show, but I'd better not.
Paul tries to persuade Estelle with the promise of buying her a lovely new dress for the occasion. Glen pops out of Harold's and sees them talking together, unseen by Paul and Estelle.
ESTELLE: You're making it very hard for me to say no.
PAUL: Well, don't say no, then!
They both laugh, and Glen looks concerned.
Lassiter's Hotel
In their honeymoon room, Hendrix and Mackenzie are energetically playing video games.
HENDRIX: You know, I'm not going easy on you just because we're married.
MACKENZIE: Ha. I've been going easy on you since the day we met.
Meanwhile, Kiri and Chloe are preparing snacks and drinks for them nearby, then in their awkwardness together, spill some of the snacks on the carpet and have to clear them up. Chloe leads Hendrix off to Harold's on the grounds that he needs to show her where the limes are for her Chlojitos. Once they're gone, Kiri lets out a loud groan.
MACKENZIE: Is everything okay?
KIRI: Uh... something happened with Chloe last night.
MACKENZIE: Oh, my god, oh my god!
Mackenzie excitedly sits Kiri down and asks for all the details.
Harold's Café
Meanwhile, we learn that Chloe has really taken Hendrix out of the hotel room in order to tell him about her and Kiri hooking up last night.
HENDRIX: Scoring at our wedding - way to go, Chlo, that's awesome!
CHLOE: Well, I wanted it to be, and I really thought it would be...
HENDRIX: What's the problem?
Lassiter's Hotel
Back in the room, Kiri tells Mackenzie...
KIRI: Uh, it... wasn't good?
MACKENZIE: Oh...
Harold's Café
Hendrix asks Chloe...
HENDRIX: How not good are we talking?
CHLOE: On a scale of one to 'how do we both get out of this without mortally offending the other for life?'
HENDRIX: Yikes.
CHLOE: Neither of us was feeling it, and it was not for lack of trying.
HENDRIX: Maybe it was just first-night nerves.
CHLOE: But we weren't nervous. We were so into each other in the lead-up, and then...
Lassiter's Hotel
Kiri tells Mackenzie...
KIRI: Maybe my expectations were too high.
MACKENZIE: Maybe.
KIRI: I mean, we're so attracted to each other, I just thought we'd intuitively know what the other was into.
MACKENZIE: Would you be keen to try again?
KIRI: Yeah. I mean, it can only get better, right?
But Kiri looks unconvinced.
Harold's Café
As does Chloe, who's still talking to Hendrix, now in the kitchen.
CHLOE: I really like her, but maybe we're just not compatible in that way.
HENDRIX: Isn't it worth giving it another go to find out?
CHLOE: We're already so uncomfortable with each other. What if we just make things worse?
Meanwhile, at a table, Toadie and Melanie are telling Amy, Terese and Glen about their trip to the states; apparently, Callum and Melanie got on very well. But Glen seems distracted, so Terese tells him he needs some caffeine and leads him to a separate table.
TERESE: Are you okay? Is it your back again?
GLEN: No, no, umm... I was thinking about your mum. Do you think you can handle her living with you?
TERESE: Sorry, I should've checked in before I invited her.
GLEN: No, it's not me I'm worried about. Do you trust her?
TERESE: Well, we've, umm, certainly had a rocky time, so I'm gonna have to set some boundaries.
GLEN: Yeah, but why now, after all these years?
TERESE: Well, we really connected when we went to see Josh's plaque, and it just reminded me how important family is. You know, I really want to give this a shot with her.
GLEN: Well, then - you should.
She goes to order coffees, just as Estelle comes in, and joins Glen at the table.
GLEN: Get what you need?
ESTELLE: ...?
GLEN: Your phone. From the car.
ESTELLE: Oh, yes. It had fallen under the seat.
GLEN: Hey, if I, uh, didn't seem keen earlier about you staying, it's just cos I'm worried about Terese.
ESTELLE: Because of me?
GLEN: I'm not sure I should mention it - she wants to keep it quiet while the divorce is still going through.
ESTELLE: Glen, I'm her mother.
GLEN: She's investing in a parking garage. She's secretly trying to boost her finances. And I don't think it's very wise, and it's risky. Ah, I shouldn't have said anything. Can you keep it to yourself?
ESTELLE: Of course. It'll be our secret.
Lassiter's Hotel
Mackenzie and Hendrix are cuddled up together on the bed, talking about their favourite moments from the wedding. Hendrix thinks they're all amazing.
HENDRIX: But I think my heart nearly exploded when I first saw you in that dress. You glowed.
Hendrix gets a video call from Pierce, who asks the pair of them if they've had a chance to consider where they're going to live. Mack says they're waiting until after the operation to decide.
PIERCE: Great. Because I was chatting to Lisa, and she came up with an idea that I'm on board with. We understand why you knocked back the honeymoon, but... we'd like to buy you both an apartment. As a wedding gift.
HENDRIX: Seriously?
MACKENZIE: That's huge!
PIERCE: I know. But the housing market is out of control at the moment. So, what do you say? Are you gonna turn down our gift?
HENDRIX and MACKENZIE: Hell, no!
MACKENZIE: We would have to be insane!
HENDRIX: That's amazing, thank you, Dad.
They end the call, and Hendrix and Mackenzie gape at one another in delight.
Harold's Café
Jane asks Nicolette how things are proceeding with Asher. Nicolette reveals they're meeting for drinks later, and Jane suggests she could drop Nicolette off so she can drink without having to worry about driving. Nicolette agrees and thanks her.
Meanwhile, Terese, Estelle and Glen are talking about their new status as housemates. Glen's back starts to play up again, so he decides to head out for a walk, telling them to stay without him.
ESTELLE: He always puts you first, doesn't he?
TERESE: Yeah, he's incredibly selfless.
Terese tells Estelle they need to chat about how their living situation will work; they will all need to contribute and pull their weight, which will perhaps mean Estelle getting a job.
ESTELLE: Pardon?!
TERESE: Well, you know, to pay the bills, and food, and...
ESTELLE: And handbags!
TERESE: Please don't be like that.
ESTELLE: How else should I be? My daughter wants to force her ageing mother out to work. Did you ask me to stay just so I could help keep you afloat while you don't have a job yourself?!
TERESE: No, of course not! You know why I asked, you know how I feel! Look, I might not be working at the moment but I can pay my way.
ESTELLE: How nice of you (!)
TERESE: Can we please not have this argument about money again?
ESTELLE: You're the one who brought it up!
TERESE: Okay, and I'm sorry I did! This is just silly!
ESTELLE: Oh, I'm silly?!
TERESE: Oh, my god, I... I didn't say that.
ESTELLE: It's clearly what you think. As well as cheap, slovenly, irresponsible...
TERESE: You know what, you're overreacting.
ESTELLE: For someone who wants a decent relationship, you're making a very poor show of it.
Estelle storms out. Terese looks frustrated.
Lassiter's Complex
Estelle sits down with Paul, who's at a table outside.
ESTELLE: I will be joining you at the theatre, and I'd love a new dress.
PAUL: That's excellent news! Is everything alright?
ESTELLE: No! My daughter has demanded I get a job in order to live with her.
PAUL (faking it): That's outrageous! I mean, if anything, you deserve to be looked after. Pampered, even (...) She's not crying poor, is she? I mean, I know that Terese is currently out of work but she's hardly destitute.
ESTELLE: Maybe she does need the money if she's investing when she shouldn't.
PAUL: What do you mean?
ESTELLE: Some parking garage she's planning to buy, apparently. Which is more important to her than her own mother! I'd better go before she sees me. I'll be waiting for your call.
Estelle walks off, and Terese then emerges from Harold's. Paul calls out to her.
PAUL: Just do remember that I have the best forensic accountant in town.
TERESE: What are you talking about?!
PAUL: Oh, in case you feel like doing a little investing on the sly while we negotiate a settlement. I will find out about it.
Paul walks off, leaving Terese looking baffled.
No 22
Glen takes a painkiller with some water. Terese comes in, and Glen reports he feels better after his walk. Terese tells Glen about her row with Estelle over money, saying she stormed off. Terese then tells Glen about her conversation with Paul, suggesting she was planning an investment.
TERESE: I had no idea what he was going on about.
GLEN: Uh, yeah... I might.
Ramsay Street
Kiri and Chloe are heading home; Kiri asks Chloe if she wants to watch a movie and have some wine later.
CHLOE: As in a date-type situation?
KIRI: As in a 'we don't need to label it'-type situation. We've felt this thing between us for a while now. It'd be nice to spend some more time together.
CHLOE: For sure! Movie date it is.
No 22
Terese is waiting to speak to Estelle when she comes in, having apparently summoned her. Glen retreats to the kitchen to let them talk.
TERESE: You told Paul about my investment. Which doesn't exist, by the way. Glen made it up to test you.
ESTELLE: That's so dishonest.
TERESE: And he specifically asked you not to tell anyone, and you went *straight* to Paul!
ESTELLE: Paul weaselled it out of me - you know what he's like! He even pressured me to go out with him again. I refused, but I wasn't myself after our argument.
TERESE: You did this to punish me! You know *exactly* what Paul has put me through, and Glen! And, you know, you say you're not spending time with him, but then when you do, you lie about it!
ESTELLE: Glen lied too!
TERESE: Yes, because he saw you talking to Paul when you were pretending to get your phone! He was worried that I couldn't trust you... I honestly thought that you'd changed. And I was really hoping that you wanted to build our relationship as much as I did. But all you wanted to do was be near Paul.
ESTELLE: That's not true.
TERESE: I want you to pack your bags and leave.
ESTELLE: But I've got nowhere else to go.
TERESE: Not my problem.
ESTELLE: I made a mistake. I'll make it up to you! We just need a bit of space and time to cool down.
TERESE: ... You're not welcome here anymore.
Terese is very upset as Estelle goes.
Francesca's Bar
Nicolette has been showing Jane around the bar prior to her date with Asher, who hasn't arrived yet.
NICOLETTE: You can tick going to a queer bar with your daughter off your bucket list - it's time for you to go.
JANE: I can stay for one drink, surely?
NICOLETTE: Hard no! No, it is bad enough that you organised my first date with Asher. If they turn up now and see that you're here, they're gonna think that I've got serious mummy issues!
Jane takes the point, and goes to leave. But Nicolette then gets a message from Asher, saying that their babysitter has bailed and that they're trying to find a replacement. Nic looks upset.
Lassiter's Hotel
Estelle is at reception, and has asked the staff to urgently call Paul, who now appears. She explains that Terese has found out they've been seeing one another behind her back; she's kicked her out, and is furious.
PAUL (intrigued): Is she? Well, I'm sorry that you had to cop the brunt of it.
ESTELLE: I knew you would be. Can I stay with you? I wouldn't ask, but I really don't know what else to do.
PAUL: ... Oh, Estelle, I would love to have you stay, really I would, but it's just, my place is so crowded at the moment. It wouldn't really be fair on you. Why don't I arrange for a room for you here instead? Well, free of charge, of course, and you can stay as long as you like!
ESTELLE: Really?
PAUL (disingenuous): When I told you that you should be taken care of, I meant it.
ESTELLE: You really are the most wonderful man.
She grabs him and kisses him on the lips; we fade on Paul's shocked and panicked eyes!
Coming up on Neighbours
