Number 22
Paul is still reluctant to tell David anything, so David insists on talking to Terese.
PAUL: OK, ok. I spent money for the Quill investment on something else. And now, I have to try and make the repayments without Terese knowing what's going on.
DAVID: How much was the loan?
PAUL: A million dollars.
DAVID: What could you have possibly spent that on?
PAUL: I gave it to Nicolette.
DAVID: What?
Paul explains that he gave Nicolette the money so she'd stay away and David is appalled.
DAVID: How am I gonna tell Aaron?
PAUL: You cannot tell him.
DAVID: This is about our daughter, he has to know.
PAUL: No!
Paul worries that Jane will find out one way or another and insists that this stays between them. David looks conflicted but Paul asks for a chance to explain.
Number 22
Aaron and Harlow are playing with Isla as Terese arrives home with Jesse. She's invited him for dinner. Jesse explains that Terese is helping him out with a situation to do with his mum. Harlow follows them into the kitchen and asks what's going on; he says that hearing more about Josh recently made him decide to reach out to his mum and now she wants to see him. She was the one who cut contact in the first place as it was too painful for her to see him while being in prison. Harlow points out that she initially didn't have much contact with her dad but now she sees him once a month in prison. Jesse says he doesn't know how he feels about it himself, but Terese and Harlow say there's no rush into making a decision; it's not like Julie's going anywhere. Meanwhile, Paul's explaining what happened with Nicolette to David outside.
PAUL: I had to pay her. It was the only way that I could guarantee that she would stay away and not contact anyone.
David doesn't look at all happy.
PAUL: Please, you almost had a breakdown because of what she did to you. I don't want to see you going through that again.
DAVID: How exactly did this deal go down? Tell me word for word. Dad, we thought Nicolette gave up Isla because it was what she wanted to do, but if she was forced or intimidated...
PAUL: You honestly think anybody could intimidate Nicolette?
DAVID: Just tell me what happened.
PAUL: We met and she refused to return. So I offered her the cash. On the condition that she cut all ties...and she accepted. There was no struggle. She was prepared to walk away, walk out of our lives completely. Which kind of speaks volumes for her character, doesn't it?
DAVID: As long as there's nothing else I should know.
PAUL: Well, she's not in the States. As far as I know she's still in Canberra.
DAVID: But John Wong said...
PAUL: I told John to tell Jane that the trail had gone cold.
David looks conflicted as Paul continues to say all the reasons why this is for the best; that Nicolette would only cause havoc and heartache for everyone if she was still around. Aaron walks in, saying they need to take Isla home.
DAVID: Yeah, coming.
Paul looks worried.
The Waterhole
Levi and Evelyn arrive in the bar and order some hot chocolates. Ned and Amy are in the corner and Evelyn remarks again how messy it will end up for them. Sheila asks what she means and Evelyn says that there's an age difference between Ned and Amy, and she has kids.
SHEILA: Levi would never get into a situation like that (laughs).
EVELYN: It has been a while since you broke up with Bea, you might be ready for someone new.
SHEILA: Absolutely. And there are so many young, gorgeous girls out there who would love to go out with you. And while you're still young and sexy yourself, you need to take advantage.
EVELYN: I hope you're not encouraging Levi to play the field.
SHEILA: What? No, of course not. I was just pointing out that he'd be spoiled for choice.
Sheila says to Evelyn she wants Levi to be in a 'normal, stable, settled relationship' just as much as she does. Evelyn likes the sound of that.
Number 26
Levi and Evelyn arrive home and Kyle is munching on crisps on the sofa. She gives him a judgmental glance before heading off to bed. Levi sits with his cousin and says that while it's nice to spend time with his mum, he was just at the bar and can see that Ned and Amy are getting closer and closer, so he feels pushed out. Kyle offers to occupy Evelyn's time tomorrow so he can spend some quality time with Amy. Levi looks thrilled with the idea.
Number 32
The next morning, David walks outside, apologising to Aaron for over-sleeping. Aaron says he hopes he's not still worrying about Paul, as Chloe and Jane arrive.
CHLOE: Hi-diddly-ho, devoted aunty alert! I hope you guys are hungry because we've got breakfast goodies galore in here.
AARON: Alright, I'll go and get some plates. Hey Jane, can you do that special trick to settle her, please?
JANE: Try to keep me away from this scrumptious little muffin.
David gets a text from Paul. It reads: 'Please call me. I need to know what you're thinking'.
Number 22
At the Robinson house, Terese notices Paul checking his phone a lot.
TERESE: Expecting to hear from someone?
PAUL: No, just checking the weather forecast.
Harlow walks in.
HARLOW: Jesse told me he's decided not to visit his mum.
TERESE: Well, isn't that his choice?
HARLOW: It would be, if he made it himself without anyone persuading him.
Terese points out that she's not had anything to do with Jesse's decision. Harlow thinks they could be more supportive; saying that Paul thought it was a bad idea when she wanted to see her dad, but Terese supported her. Terese doesn't want to sway Jesse one way or the other.
TERESE: And anyway, I'm not as involved in this decision as you think I am.
The Waterhole
Levi arrives and Sheila's surprised to see him.
SHEILA: What are you doing here? I thought you were taking your mum to the Botanical Gardens.
LEVI: I was, but now I'm taking Amy out on a date.
She doesn't look impressed. Levi says he's told his mum he's been called in to work, but Sheila disapproves of the constant lying.
SHEILA: Perhaps you should respect your mother's presence more and steer clear of your "girlfriend".
LEVI: You'd like that, wouldn't you? Look gran, the other day you weren't very subtle when you said that I needed to find a new girlfriend. And I know that you're hoping that this break with Amy will split us up.
SHEILA: I'll be honest. I do wish you were dating somebody else. And if your mother knew the truth, I'm sure she would feel exactly the same way.
Amy arrives which cuts the conversation short and she and Levi head off. To their surprise, Kyle and Evelyn walk in. She says she's just been to the station to drop off some food for Levi but they said he wasn't working.
LEVI: I am working.
EVELYN: Then why aren't you in your uniform.
LEVI: I'm not in my uniform because...I'm undercover today, mum. And Amy is involved in my case.
EVELYN: Really?
AMY: Yeah, yeah...
EVELYN: Wow, you better take these then. It sounds like hungry work.
She hands them some croissants. He gives his mum a kiss and they leave.
Number 32
Aaron goes to put some more coffee on.
DAVID: You two haven't mentioned Nicolette this morning. How are you feeling? Is it getting any easier?
CHLOE: I guess a little bit. Today's ok, but...it doesn't take much to set me off. I was watching TV last night and this ad came on. Nicolette used to always change the jingle into something dirty (laughs)...
She apologises to Jane.
CHLOE: I guess it's a dumb thing to miss, but... I guess it's a good sign if I can laugh, instead of it being so unbearable.
JANE: I just wish I knew that she was alright. So far away, all on her own.
Jane says that talking to Chloe and the boys helps though; and so does seeing Isla settled. David looks guilty.
The Waterhole
Kyle says to Evelyn he's now got to go to work.
KYLE: Perks of being the boss, I can give myself the best shifts and the extended lunch breaks.
EVELYN: Is that what you'd say is being a good boss?
KYLE: I was just joking.
EVELYN: Oh, sorry. I guess I haven't always seen the best examples of Canning work ethic.
KYLE: (awkward) Fair enough. I'll see you later.
Kyle leaves and Sheila says that Evelyn's being a bit hard on them.
EVELYN: Sorry?
SHEILA: Well, first you accuse me of encouraging Levi to be promiscuous and now you're calling the whole family a pack of bludgers.
EVELYN: I think you're being a bit sensitive.
SHEILA: Maybe...look, I know you've got a very good reason for being upset with our family, especially with me, and I'm sorry about that but fair's fair.
EVELYN: It was just an observation.
SHEILA: I think it was a lot more than that.
EVELYN: I believe in honesty and calling things how I see it.
SHEILA: Do you now?
Number 22
Jesse arrives to see Harlow, saying she text him, asking him to drop by to talk about his mum. Terese encourages Jesse to follow his own feelings about whether he wants to go and see his mum, before he goes outside to see Harlow.
PAUL: I have to say, I do wonder about your stance on this.
TERESE: Excuse me?
Paul points out that Terese reacted differently when he went to see Robert. She wasn't telling him to follow his own feelings then. He suspects Terese might be biased on whether Jesse should visit his mum because of her hatred for Julie.
PAUL: I think that you just need to ask yourself the question.
TERESE: Ok, fine...you're wrong.
PAUL: Alright, well, if that's your answer. I am gonna go and see David. I just hope you're being honest with yourself.
Terese looks pensive.
The Waterhole
Sheila and Evelyn are still arguing. Evelyn says that it's clear the Cannings have different values to her but Sheila wonders why she would have handed Levi over to them as a baby if they were so bad.
EVELYN: My parents convinced me to hand him over while I finished uni, you know that.
SHEILA: Yes, but once you did, you had your own place, you had a job. You could have done more than just a few weekend sleepovers.
EVELYN: I wanted to, but Levi was happy and settled where he was and the last thing I was gonna do was drag him away and have him resent me.
SHEILA: And the reason he was so happy is because we are a loving, happy family!
EVELYN: Levi would have been happy and turned out beautifully no matter who he was living with.
Sheila looks shocked.
EVELYN: He would have, he's kind and respectful, gentle, well-mannered...
SHEILA: Well, you might find out that he's not quite as pure as you think.
EVELYN: Care to elaborate?
Number 32
Jane, Chloe and the boys are singing the Incy Wincy Spider nursery rhyme as Paul arrives, asking if David has a minute. They walk in the house as the others continue singing to 'Isla'.
PAUL: I'm guessing since nobody tried to attack me then that you haven't said anything. And seeing how everybody's so happy and content, I hope it's going to stay that way.
DAVID: I hate being put in this position, dad. But yeah, you're right. Nicolette's put everyone here through hell in one way or another.
PAUL: Exactly.
David agrees that they don't need any more trouble.
DAVID: But this isn't going to fix all your issues, dad. How on Earth are you going to pay back that loan without Terese noticing?
PAUL: You just let me worry about that, ok? All you need to worry about is taking good care of your family. Because that's the most important thing son.
David is still clearly troubled by the situation.
Harold's Café
Levi and Amy walk in the Café.
AMY: Well, that was fun. Driving round with the sun shining, tunes, and spending time with you.
LEVI: Look, I appreciate you seeing the bright side in things but come on, you can admit it. That was the worst, right?
AMY: Ok, look, it wasn't exactly the worst, but you know, you did seem a little distracted.
LEVI: I'm sorry. I don't know, I was just on the edge you know. I thought my mum was gonna jump out and catch us.
AMY: Well if you knew that you weren't gonna relax, we don't have to force this. I'm ok with keeping some distance for a while.
LEVI: I'm not, ok, this break sucks.
AMY: I know.
Ned walks out of the kitchen.
NED: Hey!
AMY: Hey, I thought that you'd be home by now.
NED: Yeah, I'm running a bit late. You ready to go now?
LEVI: Are you guys going out?
NED: Yeah, Amy's got the day off, no point in wasting it.
AMY: We're not doing anything super fun, we're just hanging out, you know?
NED: I thought your message said we were gonna go to the city.
Amy awkwardly tries to get Ned to hush, not wanting to upset Levi. Ned and Amy leave after Levi tells them to have fun. He looks pretty deflated as they go. Evelyn walks in and Levi says he's just finished work, asking if she'd like to now go to the Botanical Gardens.
EVELYN: Would you like to go with me? Or would you prefer to go with Amy?
LEVI: ...Who told you?
Evelyn is upset by Levi's lies and admits she doesn't understand his relationship with Amy. He tries to explain but she says she's not interested and leaves hastily.
Number 22
Terese and Jesse walk in from the garden and Harlow asks what's going on.
JESSE: Terese helped me see I should go and see mum.
HARLOW: That's great!
PAUL: Yeah, what brought that on?
TERESE: Well, you know, at the end of the day people have made some good points. And for Jesse, seeing his mum's gonna be difficult but it's something that he needs to do.
HARLOW: Yeah, absolutely. And if you need support I'll come with you.
JESSE: Thanks, but Terese has already offered.
PAUL: You're going to the prison? To visit Julie?
TERESE: Well you pointed out yourself; I've been making some unfair decisions based on my feelings towards her. Jesse needs my support so I'm happy to help him.
Paul doesn't look too pleased.
Lassiters Complex
Kyle and Sheila are talking about Evelyn casting judgement on the Cannings' work ethic.
KYLE: Don't worry about it, gran. I know how hard I work, so I didn't take it personally.
SHEILA: You better not.
Levi exits Harold's looking pretty angry.
LEVI: You're unbelievable! Gran, I get it, you don't have to like my relationship, but to snitch on me to my mum is out of line!
SHEILA: What?
LEVI: You told her about Amy.
SHEILA: I didn't say anything!
LEVI: But that's what you do though, you open your mouth even though people ask you not to.
SHEILA: Levi, I just told you that I didn't say anything!
LEVI: Well, I hope you're happy. Because you've not only ruined things with Amy, you've ruined things with my mum as well!
Kyle and Sheila both look shocked.
