In the office, Terese is struggling to process what Harlow and Paul have told her about Jesse. She's shocked that Harlow has been pretending to be with Jesse to hide her continuing relationship with Brent, and that Jesse has been using this as a cover to conduct corporate espionage against Lassiter's for the Quills. Paul apologises, but says he didn't feel Terese needed to be involved.
PAUL: The Quills have caused you enough grief already.
HARLOW: We really didn't want to put you through that again.
TERESE: Why haven't you exposed him, though? And how could you bear keeping up this charade with somebody that you know the truth about?
PAUL: Because it is paying dividends. This is our chance to finally turn the tables.
HARLOW: We were feeding fake info through Jesse to the Quills. That's how we got them to back out of the film festival.
PAUL: Right now, they're scrambling to outbid Lassiter's on a dodgy piece of land.
HARLOW: It's a big financial hit.
PAUL: Look, we were going to tell you, Terese. As soon as the deal had gone through and we'd fired the boy.
TERESE (upset): Well, you can fire him right now. And I don't care about your little revenge fantasy. I don't want him anywhere near us.
PAUL: Oh, please, Terese. I know that this is painful for you, I do. But if we can just keep up the ruse until after the sale has gone through, we can strike a blow where it really hurts them.
Jane is telling Clive the plan for the surprise engagement party; Nicolette and Chloe think they are going for dinner at The Waterhole with David and Aaron, and don't suspect a thing.
Chloe and Nicolette come in. Nicolette is feeling tired and wonders whether they should reschedule their dinner for another time. Panicking, Jane intervenes.
JANE: What about Aaron and David?
CHLOE: Oh, I'm sure they'll understand if Nic's too tired.
NICOLETTE: We could see how I'm feeling closer to the time.
This is agreed upon, and Jane whispers to Clive that they can't let them cancel - she's already invited people to the party. Clive thinks they should let Aaron and David in on the plan.
Jane has come round to see Aaron and David, as per Clive's suggestion. She explains she hadn't told them about the party before so as not to risk the girls finding out, and tasks David and Aaron with making sure Chloe and Nicolette turn up at the pub. Leo is on the sofa, listening worriedly; and David and Aaron seem concerned too, given Chloe's recent doubts around the relationship.
AARON: She only just popped the question.
DAVID: Yeah, maybe it's best to hold off on the party for a while. Chloe was thinking of doing it after the baby's born.
But Jane insists people have already accepted their invitations, and that the boys should ensure Chloe and Nicolette come to the pub, without letting on about the party. They reluctantly agree. Jane leaves, and Leo also walks out without a word. David and Aaron look worried.
Harlow is telling Roxy about the earlier conversation with Terese. Harlow's wishing she hadn't let Paul talk her into keeping up the fake romance with Jesse. At this moment, Jesse himself walks in, and suggests Harlow join him for the engagement party tonight, which Terese had mentioned to him earlier. Harlow rather coldly replies that she doesn't know if she's going yet.
JESSE: Is this a bad time?
HARLOW: No, I'm fine. I'm just stressed with work, you know.
Getting the hint that he's not welcome right now, Jesse says he'll call her later.
Jane is putting up decorations for the party, while Sheila fills up glasses of champagne. Levi is at the bar.
SHEILA: Oh, could you move downwind? That cologne is making my eyes water.
LEVI: Yeah, well, lucky my plus-one happens to love it.
SHEILA: Who are you bringing?
LEVI: ... Amy.
SHEILA: Oh, you have got to be joking. I knew you two had a, you know, one-night fling, but I didn't know you were dating.
LEVI: Gran, you're the one that told me to make it into something more.
SHEILA: Yeah, but that was before I knew who the female was in question (...) She has two ex-husbands and a kid as old as you are!
LEVI: And? You dated Clive.
SHEILA: Uh, we are talking about *you* right now, thank you very much! And you don't need all that baggage. What you need is an uncomplicated girl of your own age.
At this point, Amy walks in, and Sheila forces a smile as Amy hugs Levi. Amy compliments Sheila on the engagement party decorations.
SHEILA: Yes, it's a reason to celebrate. The joy of *young* love, and all that!
Jane rushes over, saying Chloe and Nicolette are approaching. Jane, Amy, Levi and Sheila all hide behind the bar - then leap up shouting 'surprise!' when Chloe and Nicolette walk in with David and Aaron.
NICOLETTE (to Jane): Did you plan this?
JANE: Guilty as charged. I hope you don't mind?
NICOLETTE: Mind? I think I'm gonna cry!
Nicolette is clearly over the moon about the party, while Chloe is looking pretty horrified!
Terese sits at the table, deep in thought, and staring at a photo of her late son Josh on the shelf opposite. Paul comes in, ready to head to the engagement party, but Terese says he'll have to pass on her apologies.
TERESE: A party's the last place I want to be right now.
PAUL: Alright. Well, I don't have to go tonight either.
TERESE: Please. Go. Even if it's for Jane's sake. I'm better off alone.
PAUL: See, this - this is why I tried to protect you from finding out about Jesse (...) The Quills robbed you of your son. I was doing this for you.
TERESE: You know, it's... it's you being in league with Harlow. That's what hurts. The lying, and the scheming behind my back - you know, it's not like her.
PAUL: She managed to fool the two of us when she wanted to keep seeing Brent.
TERESE: So, I suppose we shouldn't be surprised. She learned from the master himself... (coldly) Just go and enjoy the party.
Paul obeys, and Terese becomes tearful as she looks at the Josh photo again.
Clive has joined the engagement party and brought a cake along with him. Jane greets Paul, who makes an excuse for Terese, saying she's busy organising the film festival. Jane says she enjoys short films, so Paul suggests she enter one of her own to the festival. Karl, who has been lingering at the bar, overhears this and comes to join them.
PAUL: Lassiter's is sponsoring a special category for local talent.
KARL: What's the prize?
JANE: Oh, not that it'd be about the money.
PAUL: I dunno, five grand is not to be sneezed at.
Karl looks very interested! Chloe and Nicolette come over to join them, and Paul congratulates them, before excusing himself.
NICOLETTE: Thank you again, Mum. This is so great.
CHLOE (forced smile): It certainly took me by surprise!
David and Aaron have drifted over to join the chat too, and when everyone else disperses, they apologise to Chloe for their involvement in keeping the party a secret.
AARON: We didn't know until the last minute either, I promise you.
CHLOE: It's okay. I just didn't see it coming.
AARON: Alright. Well, now that you're here, you might as well just relax and celebrate, huh?
Chloe smiles without enthusiasm. Sheila bustles through with a tray of appetisers, and we follow her outside, to where Nicolette is having a chat with Ned. He confirms he's enjoying his new temporary manager role at Harold's, despite how busy it's been. Ned asks if Nic's planning to return after her maternity leave - she admits she hasn't decided yet, but says she'll let him know.
NICOLETTE: I just want to have the talk with Chloe first.
NICOLETTE: I kind of floated the idea about us starting our own family, and she hasn't shut it down, so...
Ned acknowledges this, but his attention soon turns to Amy and Levi, who are chatting and laughing together opposite.
LEVI: Ned keeps looking over here. Yeah, maybe he's not as cool with this as I thought.
AMY: Well, now that you mention it, umm... he asked me on a date. And I said yes. Are you okay with that?
LEVI: ... Okay!
AMY: I mean, you said that this was casual, right?
LEVI: Yeah, it's all good!
Sheila approaches them with a tray of cheeses.
SHEILA (pointed): A jaded palate might go for the overripe, crumbling cheddar. But for you, my young lad, may I suggest the fresh, sweet, creamy brie?
Sheila glowers at Amy, before heading over to Kyle and Roxy to complain about 'the nerve of that woman' in dating both Levi and Ned at the same time. Kyle tells Sheila that if Levi's okay with it, it's none of their business. But Sheila insists that Amy is 'shameless'.
Jesse turns up looking for Harlow so they can head to the party together, not realising that Terese now knows the truth about him. Terese says Harlow's not here.
TERESE: You can drop the act, Jesse (...) I know your relationship with Harlow is a sham. I know who you really are. And I know you took the hotel job as a spy.
JESSE: ... Does Harlow know that part? Paul?
TERESE: I mean, I'm assuming you're doing it for your mum. Wasn't killing my son and putting my husband in jail enough for her?
JESSE: That had nothing to do with me.
TERESE: You're her son. It has *everything* to do with you.
Outside the pub, Ned comes over to chat to Amy, saying he didn't want to earlier in order not to interrupt her and Levi.
AMY: So, what? You were gonna just stare at us all night?
NED: No. Just you.
Levi's headed back over to Amy with more drinks, but Sheila once again warns him off. Kyle intervenes, telling Sheila to give him a break, but to no avail. Kyle goes over to check in with Roxy instead, who's worried about how much Terese must hate her right now for not telling her about Jesse. Roxy's trying to muster up the courage to apologise, adding that she isn't good with guilt.
KYLE: Babe, it's not all on you.
Meanwhile, Sheila is telling Levi she doesn't want to see him heartbroken again. But he insists he's 'not putting it out there', and heads back over to Amy, giving her a drink.
LEVI: Bee sting martini. Your favourite.
AMY: Oh! Someone's paying attention.
LEVI: So, Ned - umm, Amy told me that you have a date lined up. What's the plan?
NED: She'll just have to wait and see.
LEVI: Oh. So in other words, you don't really have a plan.
NED: Why so interested, bro? You can't handle a little competition?
LEVI: From you?
NED: Ooh. Well, I won't be taking her to my gran's pub, that's for sure.
AMY: Okay, boys, stop, please!
Levi suggests to Amy that they head inside, and she agrees - so Ned heads over to congratulate Chloe on her engagement instead.
NED: Look at you getting so serious so quick! First this, then a family?
NED: Yeah, Nic said you were thinking about planning.
Chloe pretends this hasn't come as a surprise, but Ned can tell she's been wrongfooted, and promises to 'keep it on the down-low'. Once he's gone, Chloe looks panicked and immediately chugs a glass of champagne!
Jesse is trying to explain his motivations to Terese. He claims that his stepbrother and sister, Tom and Shay, who run the Quill Group, forced him to spy on Lassiter's, threatening to cut him off if he didn't.
TERESE: You're asking for my sympathy?
JESSE: This isn't me. I'm not a spy! I hated doing this to you.
TERESE: You can return your uniform first thing in the morning. And after that, you stay away from my business, and my family. Do you understand?
Jesse tries to say he's sorry, but Terese simply tells him to get out of her sight. At this point, Harlow comes in.
HARLOW: So, I can stop pretending to like you now.
JESSE: How long have you known?
HARLOW: Longer than you think. This whole time you thought you were playing us, we were really playing you.
Terese shows Jesse the door, and he leaves. Harlow tries to apologise to Terese, but she doesn't want to hear it.
Jane and Clive are chatting through ideas for a short film for the film festival, when Karl joins them. Jane's keen on entering, and Karl announces he's keen too.
JANE: When have you ever shown the slightest flicker of interest in film-making?
KARL: I could ask you the same thing!
JANE: Well, back in the day of being a substitute, I taught an entire semester of media studies.
KARL: Oh! Hate to think how much technology's moved on since way back then!
CLIVE: Don't drag me into it.
But Jane wants Clive on board, as he 'knows his way around an editing suite', she claims.
CLIVE: I've done a PowerPoint or two...
Clive slinks off to get some more drinks as Karl and Jane get increasingly competitive. At the bar, he encounters Paul glued to his phone, and suggests he put it down and join the party. But Paul explains he's in the doghouse with Terese, saying that it's a long story. As Terese won't answer her phone, Paul goes off to give Harlow a try instead. Nearby...
CHLOE: Why were you talking to Ned about us starting a family?
NICOLETTE: Because we're getting married. People will ask.
CHLOE (strained): Isn't getting engaged momentous enough?
NICOLETTE: I'm just so excited about our future together.
CHLOE: I know. I just think maybe we should take things one step at a time.
NICOLETTE: Okay, wifey.
Jane calls Nicolette over to talk. At the bar, David and Aaron are worried that the party has had an adverse effect on Chloe's mindset, noting that she looks miserable - while oblivious Nicolette is on cloud nine.
DAVID: I think it's time we checked in on your sister.
AARON: Yeah, that's a good idea.
But when they turn around, Chloe is nowhere to be seen.
Chloe is chugging more champagne at the gazebo, and Leo comes to meet her, apparently at her request. She says she didn't know who else to speak to, and asks why he didn't warn her about the party plans. Leo says he wanted to tell her. Chloe is visibly upset, and Leo hugs her. But at this point, David and Aaron show up, and David is none too pleased to find Chloe in Leo's arms.
CHLOE: I asked him to come meet me. I didn't want to ruin the party.
DAVID (tersely, to Leo): Thanks. We've got this.
Terese has come to the party after all, and has brought Harlow with her. While Terese stops to chat to Clive and Jane, Harlow goes to the bar. Paul is with Roxy there, and asks Harlow if she's managed to talk Terese around.
HARLOW: I wouldn't get your hopes up. We're still very much in the freezer.
Terese comes over to join them.
ROXY: Auntie T, if you want to yell at me, feel free.
TERESE: This is probably not the place to talk about it. I'm here for Chloe and Nicolette.
ROXY: Copy that.
TERESE: Though you should know, I fired the boy. Effective immediately. I told you I didn't care about your pathetic revenge scheme, or the money. I don't want that family in my life.
Leo has gone, and Chloe tells David and Aaron that she just needed a minute away from the party.
AARON: Chloe, Jane meant well.
CHLOE: I know! And I was trying my best! But then everyone started talking about the wedding, and then Nic was going on about us starting a family. And I just felt like I was suffocating, and I... I had to get out.
DAVID: Are you talking about out of the party, or out of the relationship?
CHLOE: Please don't overreact.
DAVID: Are you thinking of breaking up with Nic again? Because you said that was a blip.
But Chloe says she just needed a bit of space. Nicolette now appears.
NICOLETTE: What's with the splinter party?
CHLOE: Hey! I... I just needed a minute. All that attention was getting way too much.
NICOLETTE: Says the girl who celebrated her eighteenth birthday with a three-day open house.
CHLOE: Maybe I was getting a bit emotional.
NICOLETTE: Oh, baby, you should've said!
CHLOE: All good, I'm okay now.
Nicolette and Chloe head back to the party.
DAVID: Are you buying any of that?
AARON: I really don't know.
