The Waterhole
Karl comes in and is spotted by Dee, who's having dinner. She joins him at the bar as he orders a drink, and asks him if there's any work going at the hospital. He promises to check, and is thrilled when Dee admits she's staying in town longer because things have 'developed' with Toadie, saying it's wonderful news.
Karl admits he's escaped the house after a fight with Susan, which had been 'brewing for a while'. Dee asks if there's anything she can do to help; Karl asks if she would mind going round to see Susan, as she's out of sorts. Dee promises that she will.
No 30
Toadie is telling Dipi about his plans to take Nell and Hugo to the adventure park tomorrow. Dipi clams up when she learns Dee is going too.
TOADIE: Is there a problem?
DIPI: No. But if you guys want to spend time together, I can look after the kids.
Toadie says it's fine, but Dipi persists.
DIPI: Toad, do you think it might be a bit soon for you to be introducing Dee to the kids as your girlfriend?
TOADIE: Dee and I are serious about each other. And the more time that she spends with the kids, the more they're gonna get used to it - and I think that's a good thing. I know you feel like I'm moving too fast, but honestly, it doesn't feel that way to me. I think it's time that we press play on the rest of our lives.
Dipi forces a smile.
The Waterhole
Karl is still at the bar, when a familiar face comes in - it's Olivia Bell, a woman he briefly dated a few years ago while separated from Susan. She explains she's just moved to Eden Hills; Karl recalls that she was a writer, and asks if she's still doing it.
OLIVIA: Attempting to! Still doctoring?
KARL: Attempting to.
They recall how they had a date in the pub, and another at Karl's place, when he cooked her a 'Heston dinner'.
OLIVIA: It's still my favourite story to tell at boring parties!
KARL: Ouch, yeah - I haven't picked up a blowtorch since!
Olivia notices Karl's wedding ring, and he explains that he and Susan got back together.
OLIVIA: I'm happy for you.
KARL: Thank you. Me too!
Goodwood Prison
Andrea is talking to Patrice about being kept from their kids while in prison. Elly comes in and sits nearby, reading a book.
PATRICE: I'd do anything to see my son again. You've got to do what's right by you and Hugo.
ANDREA: Yeah, see? You don't think I'm crazy.
Patrice notices that Elly seems to be listening to their conversation, and goes over to give her a scare by shouting 'boo!'
ANDREA: Come on, back off.
PATRICE: Nah, she's a snoop.
ELLY: No I'm not, I'm reading.
ANDREA: She's alright. Come on. Let her be.
Patrice grudgingly rejoins Andrea, while a shaken Elly continues to read.

Bea tells Susan that she overheard her arguing with Karl before. Susan apologises, but says that since losing Aster, she and Karl have 'hit breaking point'.
SUSAN: Karl blames me for bringing Finn back into our lives. He never really believed that we could rehabilitate him, but I talked him into it. So now he blames me for what happened.
BEA: What, he said that?
SUSAN: No, no. Well, not in so many words. But I know - I know that it's true (...) But honestly, I blame myself. So, he's right, and I just don't know where that leaves us.
BEA: Well, you'll work through things. You just have to talk.
SUSAN: We can't really do that at the moment.
BEA: Well, why don't you talk to me?
SUSAN: No, no, sweetheart. I don't want to drag you into the middle of this any more than you already are.
Dee knocks at the door and comes in; she explains she's seen Karl, who suggested she could drop in for a cup of tea. Bea goes to fetch her a cuppa, while Susan and Dee hug.
SUSAN: I'm so sorry we haven't spent more time together since you've been back.
DEE: Oh, don't be silly - I'm here now.
SUSAN: Yes - yes, you are!
The Waterhole
Olivia and Karl are chatting over a drink; Olivia moans about the laziness of men on female-led dating apps.
OLIVIA: No-one wants to ask anything about me anymore - and when they do ask for something, I am not willing to send.
She implies that they ask her for naked pictures, and Karl is shocked this happens before they've even met her.
OLIVIA: No-one actually wants to meet up anymore. Hence coming here and getting a takeaway for one.
Karl checks his phone.
OLIVIA: Are you being summoned?
KARL: No, no, actually it's quite the opposite.
OLIVIA: Are you two in a rough patch?
KARL: Oh, there's just a bit going on, yeah. It's been a rough time for my family.
OLIVIA: Well, if you need a sounding board...
KARL: Oh, I'm not sure that would be appropriate...
OLIVIA: Come on, I can tell you need to vent...
Sonya's Nursery
The next morning, Dipi is at the nursery to check up on things. Shane is there too, doing some uni work; he makes a remark about wanting to keep on top of their finances, but Dipi's sure that when he's a qualified engineer, all his hard work will pay off. Shane is just heading off to uni, when Dipi sees Dee in the nursery examining some plants.
Dipi looks annoyed, and glances at the 'Sonya's Nursery' sign, the implication being that she doesn't like Dee encroaching on Sonya's turf...
No 28
Karl comes in, and says good morning to Bea and Susan. Susan immediately goes for a shower, unwilling to even speak to him. Bea asks where Karl was, saying Susan was worried last night.
KARL: Really? (!) I didn't get any calls or texts expressing distress.
BEA: Well, she was angry.
KARL: Did she say anything about me staying out?
BEA: Not exactly, but I could tell that she was concerned (...) I've seen you guys argue before, but nothing like this. You've never not come home before.
KARL: I stayed at the hotel, just to give everyone some space.
BEA: Well, don't mature people sit down and talk about their problems?
KARL: Yeah, that's my impression too. She's not interested! When Susan's ready to talk, I'm ready to listen.
Harold's Café
Toadie and Dee are hanging out at the Café with Nell and Hugo, who seem to be getting on like a house on fire with Dee. Dipi comes in and looks all aggrieved at the sight of them. She walks over to join them; Nell is about to draw a picture and when Dipi asks what of, Nell says she's drawing one of Dee. Dee is flattered, Dipi annoyed.
Dipi reports that the nursery was busy, but that 'Carlotta's organisational skills' require some work. Toadie gets a message about Elly's appeal; there are some more documents that require her signature, which means he'll have to cancel their adventure park trip so he can deal with it.
Nell is disappointed, so Dee offers to take the kids to the adventure park on their own; Toadie could join them later. However, Dipi isn't having this, pointedly suggesting it's best the kids are with someone they know, despite Dee's assurances that she's spent a lot of time around kids. Dee relents to keep the peace, and agrees Dipi can take the kids.
Toadie suggests Dee head to the hospital to see if she can sort out some nursing shifts. Dipi pipes up and mentions that Dee was at Sonya's Nursery earlier.
DEE: Yeah... I didn't want to say anything in case it was a bit awkward.
TOADIE: Bit late for that now?
He awaits an explanation.
Goodwood Prison
Elly is reading on her bed, when Andrea comes into the cell. Andrea asks if Elly has any visitors coming today; she replies that Toadie is coming with some documents for her to sign.
ANDREA: Oh! Say g'day to him for me. And thank him for my pic.
ELLY: Rather keep my visit about the appeal, if that's okay.
ANDREA: I'm not asking much, Conway. It's just good manners to say thank you. And it's what friends do, don't we?
ELLY: Sure.
ANDREA (menacing): Great. Then, thank him for me.
They smile at one another falsely, but Elly grimaces as Andrea leaves.
Harold's Café
Dee is explaining to Toadie and Dipi that she went to Sonya's Nursery to buy a plant for Elly to cheer her up in jail. She didn't want to make a big deal of going there for it, and now feels silly about it. Toadie thinks it was a lovely thing to do, and suggests Dee give the plant to Elly in person.
While Toadie takes the kids to the counter to get some food, Dipi grudgingly admits that buying Elly the plant was a lovely gesture on Dee's part.
DEE: Thanks. Hey, umm... I'm sensing you're not my biggest fan.
DIPI: It's nothing personal. Just, seeing you in Sonya's Nursery -
DEE: I get it. It was her place. I'm not trying to take her place - you know that? I couldn't, and I don't want to. I spent so many years of my life being Karen, the only shoes I want to fill are my own.
DIPI: I appreciate that.
DEE: And I'm not trying to take your place. I see how much those kids mean to you.
DIPI: Since Sonya died, they've been like my babies. I am really protective.
DEE: Of course you are! And, look, it's really early days for me and Toadie. But he's really special. And his family's really special. And I'd hate for you to think that I'm treading on your toes. We should have a coffee some time. Or a tea.
Ambivalent smile from Dipi.
No 28
Bea is still hectoring Karl about talking to Susan. He insists he's tried repeatedly, but it always ends in an argument. Bea admits Susan won't speak to her either, but says that seeing Dee really seemed to help her.
BEA: It's amazing how they had this bond even after all those years apart.
Karl looks like he's had an idea.
Lassiter's Lake
Dipi and Shane are at the rotunda with Hugo and Nell. Dipi admits to Shane that she insisted on looking after the kids when Dee offered earlier, and is now feeling bad about it.
DIPI: I just feel like it's too soon for her to play the stepmum figure, instead of...
SHANE: Instead of you?
DIPI: I guess. I've been feeling a bit jealous.
SHANE: Why's that, cos you've got the hots for Toad?
DIPI: Shut up, Shane! No, it's just the kids adore their auntie Dee, and I just feel a little left out.
Shane gets a text calling him into work, so they agree to talk about it tomorrow. Shane leaves, and Nell shows Dipi the picture she's been drawing. Dipi asks who the person is with love hearts around them, assuming it's Dee. But Nell corrects her - the figure she's drawn is actually Dipi! Dipi looks a bit humbled.
Rebecchi Law
Dee is with Toadie at the office, and Karl has come to tell her that he's spoken to the hospital, and they have some casual nursing positions available; they're going to call her, as they're very understaffed. Dee is thrilled, and thanks him.
The three of them leave the office together, and Toadie asks how things are at home. Karl admits that's another reason he's here, and asks Dee how she'd feel about moving into No 28 if she's thinking of staying around for longer.
DEE: I don't want to intrude.
KARL: Oh, no, it's just that... I'm struggling to help Susan at the moment, but you being there might. Couldn't make things worse.
Dee asks how Bea would feel about it; Karl admits he hasn't mentioned it to Bea or Susan but thinks they'd be fine with it. Dee says that if that's the case, then she'd love to move in. Karl is pleased, and Toadie and Dee walk off hand-in-hand to go and visit Elly.
Goodwood Prison
Elly's surprised to see Dee in the waiting area with Toadie, and asks if she's here to see Andrea. But Dee confirms she's here to visit Elly too.
DEE: To be honest, I haven't been able to stop thinking about you since we met the other day. I've never been locked up, and I'm not a mum, but I know what it's like to be separated from the people you love, and it's torture, so... I bought you something.
Dee passes Elly the plant she got at the nursery. Elly immediately recognises it as an aster, the flower her daughter is named after.
DEE: I know you're gonna have photos, and of course Claudia will bring her in to visit. But I just thought it might be nice to see it growing.
Elly is moved by the gesture, and thanks Dee. Dee's about to leave them to it, to see if Andrea's about, but Elly stops her, and gestures for her to sit back down.
ELLY (whispers): I don't think you should see Andrea. She's been saying stuff about Hugo. I think she might be trying to manipulate us all into getting him back some day.
TOADIE: She's got zero chance of getting custody! She's in here for ten years - more, if I've got anything to do with it.
ELLY: I don't think lawyers are involved. I overheard her talking to a friend about some kind of plan.
Dee looks worried.
The Waterhole
Karl has called a family meeting with Susan and Bea at the pub; Susan is being very passive-aggressive as he talks to them. He asks how they'd both feel about Dee moving in with them. She's 'practically family', he says - they have the room, and he thinks they should help her out. Susan's stony-faced, but doesn't present any objection.
SUSAN: I think it's a lovely idea.
KARL: But...?
SUSAN: No buts.
Relieved, Karl goes to fetch them some drinks - but finds Olivia at the bar.
OLIVIA: Twice in twelve hours! Lucky me.
KARL: Ah, yes! Just doing a bit of family bonding.
OLIVIA: How's it going?
KARL: Well, better than twelve hours ago, but still not great. I'm sorry I burdened you with all my problems last night.
OLIVIA: No, don't be - I loved catching up. I mean, if I didn't, I would've ducked out without giving you my number (...) If you ever needed to talk, I'm here, okay?
KARL: Alright, thank you (...) I'll keep that in mind.
Karl looks a bit conflicted as Olivia leaves.
No 30
Toadie and Dee are talking about what Elly said about Andrea; evidently, an upset Dee has decided that Andrea has been playing her for a fool.
DEE: Can't believe I fell for all that 'twin connection' stuff. I really thought she wanted a relationship.
At this point, Dipi comes in from the adventure park with Nell and Hugo. She asks how things went with their visit to Elly, and Dee becomes tearful. Dipi notices, and sends Nell to go into her room and read a book with Hugo. Dee bursts into tears over Andrea.
DEE: I just feel like such an idiot for letting her back in my life again, you know? I should've known that she can't be trusted.
DIPI: Don't be so hard on yourself. We have all been fooled by her.
TOADIE: More than once.
DEE: Yeah, well, at least I'm amongst good company.
DIPI: Don't let her harden you against the world. You are one of the good guys.
Dipi gives Dee a hug, and Toadie looks pleased to see them bonding.
Goodwood Prison
In the communal area, Andrea approaches Elly menacingly.
ANDREA: Thought we were mates, Conway?
ELLY: What?
ANDREA: You think you're better than me, dontcha? Hm. Think you're better than I am, cos, what, my sister gave you some daisies?
ELLY: I didn't know she was coming.
ANDREA: ... I know everything you told 'em.
ELLY: We were discussing my appeal.
ANDREA (aggressive): Liar, liar! Pants on fire!
Patrice and her buddies nearby are amused by this.
ELLY: Andrea, you weren't even there.
ANDREA (laughs): Honey, I've got ears everywhere.
Elly now looks more worried.
ELLY: Umm, okay, I'll... I'll call Toadie. Tell him I made a mistake.
ANDREA: Nah. Don't worry about it. Didn't like you that much anyway.
She steals one of Elly's biscuits and licks it theatrically, before putting it down again.
ANDREA: Good luck making mates in here. They love a snitch.
Andrea walks out, giving Elly a glare as she goes. Patrice glares at Elly too.
