Number 28
Susan confesses to the rest of the household that she broke their agreement not to tell Claudia anything, so that she can try and make sense of it all herself. Much to Elly's relief, Susan confirms that she didn't say anything that would incriminate her.
SUSAN: She didn't show any interest in your case.
BEA: So, you trust her now?
After thinking for a second, Susan replies that Claudia's "grief was genuine" and when she is met by silence, reminds them that "she's lost two sons." Karl reiterates that they need to be careful, but Susan thinks they can do that and be "compassionate at the same time."
SUSAN: I'm not going to apologise for trying go give a grieving mother some kind of closure.
Number 26
Kyle leads Dipi out into the garden to see Sheila - she is being neighbourly and bringing round some food for them. Dipi wasn't planning on staying, thinking that they'll have been inundated with visitors, but Sheila explains that they've seen nobody (other than Dipi) since the funeral.
SHEILA: Everyone else seems to have forgotten that Gary's died.
Dipi tries to explain that it could be because folk don't know what to say and Kyle adds in that they "can't expect the whole world just to stop."
KYLE: We have to try and get back to normal too.
SHEILA: Being normal means Gary would be here.
"I didn't mean it like that," Kyle is quick to say back to his Gran but to her "there is no more normal for me." She is determined also not to let anyone forget Gary.
Lassiters hotel, Claudia's room
After introducing themselves, Claudia lets Mark and Sky enter her hotel room so she can be brought up to speed about the investigation. She is informed that now Elly has been charged, the investigation has finished as it gets handed over to the OPP, who will take things from there. Claudia admits that she didn't think Elly would be capable "of doing something like this" but their silence makes her believe otherwise? Sky replies to say that "there's enough evidence to support the charges," but she seeks Mark out to ask if he believed "Elly killed my son?" diplomatically, Mark replies that they've "looked at every angle, now it's up to the courts." Again, she tries to taunt Mark into dissing Elly, by remarking to him "of all the cases for you to be handing," having already confirmed earlier that he was married to Elly. Rather than engage Claudia further in conversation, Sky hands over her business card and the pair depart.
During the conversation, we hear that Mark will be staying put until the trial is over, but Sky will be returning to Queensland.
The Waterhole
Sheila is in a strop as the council knocked back her idea of a memorial for Gary, like the one for Sonya. Kyle points out that she was the Mayor once and Dipi explains that it's the Foundation wall and thus can do what they want.
Sheila then spots that Chloe and Pierce at a table and goes over to them to ask for a financial contribution to build a memorial to Gary - a statue in the middle of the complex or a plaque like the one for Josh Willis at Lassiters. "I think those circumstances were a bit different," Chloe diplomatically tries to say to Sheila and Dipi's suggestion for a tree, like Sonya's one, doesn't go down well either!
PIERCE: I'm not sure what you are asking for is possible.
SHEILA: My son died on your property, but I guess that doesn't mean anything to you because you two are just as bad as everyone else!
Harold's Café
Chloe follows Sheila to the café after she stormed out of the pub, to apologise for coming over as being insensitive. "As long as you didn't mean it," Sheila sarcastically replies. "You just caught us off guard," Chloe tries to explain to her and that they would like to do something to remember Gary by offers to shout Sheila a coffee so they can chat about it.
When Chloe goes up to the counter to get their coffee's, she runs into Bea. She asks how Elly is doing (not great) before apologising again for showing the videos to Elly (Sheila's ears pick up at this point!). Bea then says that Claudia is in town too and tells Chloe that this time, there is nothing she can do "to fix this."
After Bea hobbles out of the café, Sheila goes up to Chloe to ask what the videos about Finn she was referring to. "It was nothing," Chloe replies trying to get out of the tricky situation she's got herself into, so Sheila's comeback is that Chloe won't mind sharing!
CHLOE: It would only upset you.
SHEILA: I'm already upset! Why don't you tell me what you were talking about and then let me be the judge of that!
Lassiters hotel, Claudia's room
Claudia lets her lawyer into her room, intrigued by the comment on hiring her that she has a "personal interest in the case." "I used to live in the area. I'm familiar with some of the people involved," the lawyer replies and we then see who said lawyers is - Sam Fitzgerald, last seen in 2010!
CLAUDIA: Is that right?
SAM: Let's just say, I've had my fair share of dealings with the Kennedy's! I'm more than happy to take on a case against one of theirs!
Number 28
The household debate among themselves what the true motives are surrounding Claudia's visits - Bea thinks she is genuinely here to help whereas Elly feels she has to continually keep her guard up, which is causing her to stress out. "Claudia's fooled us before," Karl reminds them all although Bea is sure she is too late to influence the investigation.
SUSAN: It'll be fine Elly.
Lassiters hotel, Claudia's room
Claudia is wasting no time laying it on thick to Sam over how bad Elly is - "unemployed, about to face trial for murder" and therefore "simply can't give Aster what she needs." Sam is sure that Claudia could provide Aster with a stable home, although thinks if something were to happen, the Kennedy's would definitely step in.
SAM: Your granddaughter needs to be raised by the right people; the Kennedy's are not it.
Given the bitterness, Claudia asks what her history is with the K's - so she explains that her ex-husband Dan got together with their daughter Libby and believes that the K's exploited her mental health issues, thus causing her to leave Melbourne. "So what made you come back?" Claudia asks and we hear she's now a partner in the law firm she works at and was surprised to see this case land on her desk. Claudia seeks reassurance that Sam is happy to take the case on and gives her a resounding confirmation that she is!
SAM: Claudia, if you want to win this, you need someone who knows the people you are dealing with.
Police station
Sheila storms into the station, demanding to see Finn's video diary entries. "Those videos are evidence Sheila," Mark explains to her and he now finds out about Chloe passing them onto Elly "for their movie night!" Given Sheila's raised voice, its no surprised that Sky has overheard what was being said and wants a word with Mark in private!
Mark lands himself in it big time with Sky after he is forced to reveal that he gave David a look of the transcripts, hence how Chloe knew about them, but does say that he told Chloe she couldn't see them.
Sheila is still determined to see the videos, despite being told "it's against police protocol," and vents that everyone is so concentrating on Finn, that they have forgotten about Gary. "I can't imagine the hell you're going through right now Sheila," Sky says to her in a quiet soothing voice and doesn't blame her "for wanting answers" and would show her the videos "in a heartbeat" but their hands are tied.
The Waterhole
Over a beer, Pierce and Aaron are reassuring David that there is no need to rush back to work after he admitted reading the transcripts did help - the hospital have okayed him taking as much time off as he needs.
The newly arrived Chloe is about to tell the boys what happened during her meeting with Sheila when Mark rushes into the pub to have a go at his sister for the trouble she's caused! Chloe doesn't deny taking the video clips from Mark's computer and explains it was so she could help Elly "make sense of things."
CHLOE: If it makes you feel any better, it totally backfired, Elly was really freaked out.
"It doesn't make me feel any better," Mark tersely replies back and warns that it is "going to have serious consequences" for them both! Pierce stands up for his wife by saying she's apologised, but Mark angrily replies, "that sorry might not be good enough this time!"
Lassiters hotel, Claudia's room
While not directly answering Sam asking if she thought Elly killed Finn, Claudia is more concerned over who will look after Aster "when Elly goes to jail." "Most likely the Kennedy's," Sam replies back, which annoys Claudia as she is the grandmother. Sam enquires about Elly's parents - dad not present and her mum is not up to it, Claudia deduces that it would then be up to Karl, Susan and Bea.
SAM: Then it's our job to cast doubt on their suitability.
CLAUDIA: How do we do that?
SAM: We get on the front foot. We show that they've made plenty of mistakes. And they made their biggest when they took your son in and convinced everyone he was not a threat. Having said that though, the court do like give a lot of weight to the mothers wishes, so, we may need to help it a long a bit."
CLAUDIA: I'll do whatever it takes.
SAM: Good. We need to leave no doubt in anyone's mind that the Kennedy's are not fit for this job.
CLAUDIA: Well they're a family on the brink. I don't think it would take much to push them over the edge.
SAM: You know, I think you and I are going to work very well together.
Number 26
Out in the backyard with Dipi and Kyle, Sheila still isn't letting it go having been refused permission to watch the videos. Kyle tries to explain that whatever is on the videos, "it's not going to change what Finn did." Dipi begs her to "let it go," but Sheila can't, "not while I still need answers." Sheila then has a brainwave over who she can talk to - David!
Number 28
Everyone is bonding with Aster (Bea is determined her name will be the first the wee toot says!) when Claudia calls round. She personally wanted to tell them all that she is donating Finn's body to the university and to reassure Susan that she'll "never be responsible for my son again." Susan thanks Claudia for her gesture and invites her into the house.
Immediately, Claudia makes a beeline for Aster and Bea hands her over (Aster objects!) and admits that she "never imagined myself as a Grandma" but now "can't get enough of it." Elly asks how long she is going to be in town for and Claudia's reply is she isn't in a rush and wants to spend time with Aster too. Subtly, she also volunteers her services since she knows they will be busy on Elly's case.
CLAUDIA: After all, she's the only family I have now.
Police station
Sky is serving Mark a bollocking, but he simply replies that he saw it as a way of helping David and his family. That remark gets him another reminder of keeping work and home life separate and Sky warns that he is treading a very close line to "screwing things up for the OPP."
MARK: It was an error of judgement; it won't happen again.
SKY: I hope not.
Number 26
"Please David," Sheila begs David with after he and Aaron come round after she texted them. David begins by saying that Finn filmed the videos over a few weeks, and they show him regaining his memory. "How does Elly come into it?" Kyle asks but David refuses to go there, despite Sheila saying it will all come out at the trial, to concentrate instead on Finn. David continues by saying Finn was struggling with what was happening to him, his memory return was "the last thing that he wanted but he was too afraid to ask for help."
KYLE: Because he knew he'd go to jail.
Continuing, David tries to explain that Finn felt he'd worked hard to become the person he had.
DAVID: He didn't want to go back to being who he was before. He didn't tell anyone the truth. It got to a stage where it was too late.
Sheila is now angry that everyone "is going to feel sorry for him." David is quick to say that isn't what he got from the transcripts.
DAVID: I realise that no-one could have known what was going on, which helped me because I was worried I'd missed warning signs.
SHEILA: Well you did! I mean you can tell yourself whatever you need to, to make yourself feel better, but there were signs and you missed them.
DAVID: I took my responsibilities as part of his medical team very seriously Sheila.
SHEILA: Oh fat lot of good that did!
Kyle tries to stop the incrimination's, but Sheila accuses David of missing the signs that there was something wrong with Finn. "I wasn't even his doctor then," David reminds her, and Aaron tries to halt their meeting.
DAVID: Sheila, I'm sorry.
SHEILA: My son is dead because a lot of people made a lot of stupid mistakes and I for one am not going to let anybody off the hook!
The Waterhole
Even though she is in the bar as a punter (to keep herself busy), Sheila spots that Sam needs a refill and goes over to ask, but she is fine. Just at that, Sheila spots the #28 residents enter the bar and Sam hurriedly tries to put away her files.
SHEILA: Good to see you all out on the town, happy as Larry!
"Come on, that's not fair Sheila," Karl replies back and Bea chips in to point out that they too are "devasted about what happened."
SHEILA: Yes, you look really torn up coming here for a big family dinner.
(Turning to talk to Susan directly)
SHEILA: I thought you'd be too ashamed to show your face in public! You clearly don't have a leg of remorse.
SUSAN: Sheila, there's not a moment that goes by where I don't think about what I could have done differently.
SHEILA: Well it's too little too late isn't it.
Karl has heard enough and leads the family out to eat elsewhere. One person has been earwigging very closely to their exchanges... Sam!
Number 28
The family arrive home to find that their house has been ransacked. Karl orders everyone to stay put by the door while he checks to see if the intruder is still in the house. He reports that he doesn't think anyone is there, "but the whole house has been ransacked" and gets his phone out to call it in.
