- Terese is not impressed
Lassiter's Complex
We pick up where we left off; Terese is embarrassed and humiliated by Leo's public proposal, no doubt due in no small part to the sight of Paul lingering nearby, looking peeved.
TERESE: No - no. I'm sorry, I can't do this.
David and Aaron, who have been preparing to take pictures of the happy engagement, look sheepish. Amy has turned up to watch too.
Terese tells Leo to get up off his knee. He objects that it 'feels so right'.
TERESE: Leo, please!
LEO: I love you.
TERESE: We'll talk about this when we get home.
Terese stomps off, leaving Leo looking devastated. Paul looks concerned.
No 30
Sonya and Toadie are relaxing on the couch. Mark turns up; in true Mark style, he's written up a detailed and stringent itinerary of ways he can help Sonya as she undergoes treatment.
As he starts reading it out, his voice breaks and he becomes emotional. Sonya tells him they don't know what help they're going to need yet, but she's clearly very moved by his gesture, and concerned for his anguish.
SONYA: I'll pop the kettle on. I want to see how you are.
MARK: No, no - don't do that. Don't even think about me, okay?
SONYA: We're all in this together, Mark, okay? So please just sit - stay...
MARK: No, no - you know what? I should probably get going. You should rest.
Mark leaves, and Toadie and Sonya look at each other awkwardly.
Paul's Penthouse
David, Amy and Paul are chatting about Leo's awkward marriage proposal to Terese. David recalls his own failed proposal, his first one to Aaron.
DAVID: I was wearing angel wings. I understand humiliation.
AMY: Yeah, but you and Aaron got married in the end. Maybe that means that Leo and Terese will, too?
Yes, Amy, that's perfectly logical (!) Paul is worried about Leo hurting from the rejection. Amy promises to catch up with Leo tomorrow, and Paul says he'll do the same.
David goes to take a phone call, while Amy sounds out how Paul feels himself about Leo proposing to Terese.
PAUL: End of the day, Leo is my son. I don't want to see him get hurt.
David comes off the phone - it was Clive, on behalf of the hospital board. He's asked David to come in for a meeting tomorrow, to find out where he stands with the disciplinary process.
No 22
Leo is lying on the sofa looking mournful. Terese appears, and he's keen to talk.
TERESE: Look, Leo, I have been struggling to understand why you'd do this. I mean, we have never, ever talked about marriage! I mean, not once! And most people do that first.
LEO: Look, I guess it's cos it's Valentine's Day tomorrow, and we were under that big love heart. Emotions just took over.
TERESE: I know, but to do it in public!
LEO: You know I'd never try to embarrass you on purpose.
TERESE: Yeah, but that's just it! I mean, you're usually so good about the fact that I don't like over-the-top displays. This is not like you!
LEO: If I'm being honest with you... I guess I've been feeling some distance between us. And I was desperate to make us close again. When you found out Sonya had cancer, you didn't come to me - you just rushed off!
TERESE: Because I was in shock. And I needed time to think.
LEO: Well, that's okay, if you needed to be alone. But sometimes, I just wish you'd come to me. And now I've gone and messed up big-time... Do you think you can put this behind us? Pretend it never happened?
TERESE: ...
Lassiter's Lake
The next day, Toadie is by the lake with Hugo, when Amy shows up and asks if he has any Valentine's plans with Sonya. He says not, and they get talking about the fact that he's advertising for a new staff member at the nursery, to look after the place while Sonya is ill.
AMY: What kind of person is right for the job?
TOADIE: Uhh... you know, someone who's trustworthy.
So in other words, Amy - not Gary.
AMY: I was thinking Gary.
Sigh.
TOADIE: Yeah. Yeah, sure, if it means I don't have to advertise - absolutely!
Double sigh.
Toadie says he'll speak to Gary and offer him the job. Amy asks him not to mention her name, explaining that Sheila has been giving her a hard time about intervening with Gary's career. This would only give her more ammunition, Amy explains.
No 24
Aaron is telling Mark and Elly about his super-romantic Valentine's plans with David in The City™, since it's their first Valentine's Day as a married couple. Mark suddenly decides the roses he bought Elly seem inadequate by comparison.
ELLY: I only bought him flax linen PJs, so you're outdoing us all!
Aaron is hoping David will have good news in his disciplinary meeting, which he's just left for. Elly reminds Mark that they need to do the seating plan for their wedding, but Mark says he's not feeling up to it today. Elly says that's fine, but looks a bit disappointed. She leaves the room.
MARK: I just can't think of much other than Sonya right now. Elly gets it - she understands.
AARON: As long as she doesn't end up doing everything on her own. Cos I've been there, and it is not fun.
MARK: it's just a bit hard to care about seating arrangements and wedding cake samples and 90s cover bands, when your best mate has cancer. In fact, I'm starting to think... maybe it's best if we postpone the wedding.
Aaron looks worried.
Ramsay Street
Sonya is having a deep-and-meaningful with Yashvi and Kirsha. Yashvi has been inspired by Sonya's bravery, and says it's persuaded her it's time to get her own act together. Yashvi explains she's thinking about resitting some Year 12 subjects, joining the Dolphins footie team again, and giving the Draft Combine another crack.
SONYA: I think your mum and dad are gonna be pretty thrilled.
YASHVI: Yeah. But I'm not doing it for them; I'm doing it for me.
SONYA: And that's the best reason to do anything.
Kirsha has to get to school, and hugs Sonya goodbye. As the girls leave, Elly approaches Sonya, and also hugs her - saying she's heard the news from Mark, and offering her help if she needs it. Sonya would rather hear about Elly's wedding plans, but is concerned to learn Mark's opted out of doing the seating plan today.
ELLY: Don't worry. I will look after him.
SONYA: I know you will... You'd better get back to it. And make sure you save me a good seat, alright?
ELLY: Of course!
Lassiter's Complex
Terese has her arm sling off from the shooting, but Piper is more interested in learning about Leo's surprise proposal. Piper guesses it didn't go well; Terese admits she turned him down in front of everyone - and sneaked out of the house this morning to avoid having to talk to Leo again.
PIPER: Mum!
TERESE: I know it's immature! But I don't know what to do. And I'm actually really upset that he embarrassed me like that. He said he did it because he was feeling insecure (...) but what if it's justified? ... When I heard about Sonya, I didn't want to talk to Leo about it (...) I went straight to Paul.
PIPER: Mum!
TERESE: He was there for me with my cancer, so I knew he'd understand.
PIPER: Does Leo know about this?
Terese concedes that he doesn't, and says that she needs to talk to Leo before their planned Valentine's weekend trip comes around.
The Waterhole
Sheila casually asks Gary if he got any Valentine's cards today.
GARY: Yes, Mum, as a matter of fact, I did.
SHEILA: Really?
GARY: Yes, and I know the secret admirer was you.
SHEILA: Don't be ridiculous!
GARY: If you didn't want me to know, you should've changed your handwriting.
SHEILA: I don't know what you mean! But I'm really glad that you did get something - because 'Mother Knows Best' says you have to make your child feel special.
GARY: Yeah. Nothing makes your kid feel special like being his mum's Valentine (!)
Toadie turns up and overhears this.
TOADIE: Am I interrupting a tender moment?
GARY: Oh, no, mate, please - I would pay you to interrupt.
Toadie offers Gary the job at Sonya's Nursery. Sheila quotes her self-help book again, saying Gary should weigh up the pros and cons.
GARY: Okay - pros; I get to earn some extra cash, and get a breather from you. Cons; nah, there is none.
Toadie says he'll drop the necessary paperwork over later. Gary looks chuffed.
Fitzgerald Motors
Sonya is telling Mark about her visit to Tasmania to see Andrea. But the real reason she's there is to find out why Mark's shunning his wedding planning duties today.
MARK: I told her I need a break from it.
SONYA: What's going on?
Mark struggles to keep his composure.
SONYA: Mark?
MARK (tearful): I'm having trouble dealing with what's happening to you. And I promised myself I wouldn't worry you with it. But nothing else seems important right now.
SONYA: Oh - not even your wedding?
MARK: I'm thinking about postponing it.
SONYA: No, don't do that.
MARK: I want to be around to help you.
SONYA: I know you do, but that's just - come on, that's just ridiculous, yeah? A wedding is joyous, and it's happy, and it's what you want. And I'm not gonna let you make me the reason for it not going ahead.
MARK: Son -
SONYA: No, no. I'm not gonna let you do it to me, I'm not gonna let you do it to Elly, and I'm not gonna let you do it to yourself, okay? So if you really want to help me, you'll find Elly, and you'll work out that seating plan. And you will make this the happiest day of your life, okay?
Mark nods tearfully, and hugs her.
Paul's Penthouse
Leo comes in to see Paul; he admits he hasn't slept much, for worrying about how things are with Terese. Paul admits it probably wasn't the best time for a proposal after all Terese has been through lately. Leo's aware of this, and thinks he might have stuffed things up permanently. He gets a message from Terese.
LEO: She wants to meet up.
PAUL: So go! And Leo - I hope everything works out, mate.
LEO: Thanks.
The Shed
Mark comes to see Aaron. He tells him to forget what he said earlier about postponing the wedding - it's all going ahead as planned. Aaron is relieved to hear this. Mark admits Sonya read him the riot act.
David turns up, having just come out of his disciplinary hearing. His suspension has been lifted, but the bad news is he's no longer on the surgeons' programme. Aaron hugs him, but David says he'll come to terms with it and tries to be upbeat.
Aaron tells him he's got something organised for Valentine's Day; but David just wants to get takeaway and watch TV. Not mentioning the lavish night out he's arranged, Aaron tells David that's exactly what they'll do, and kisses him.
Lassiter's Lake
Terese and Leo are walking and talking. She apologises for keeping him waiting; Leo hopes they can still go away for the weekend together.
LEO: We can use the time to work on us. Because, babe - you and me, we've got something good here.
TERESE: ... I know.
LEO: Great. Then let's go. Let's work things out.
Terese puts on a strained smile. Leo kisses her, and rushes off to pack for the weekend. Terese looks worried.
Harold's Café
Amy is pleased to learn from Toadie that Gary has accepted the nursery job. But Sheila comes in and catches them talking about it. She's grateful to Toadie for giving Gary the opportunity.
SHEILA (to Toadie): Thank you for recognising his talents, and not acting like he needs looking after!
Amy bites her tongue!
SHEILA (to Amy): Because, like I told you, love - there's no need for you to get involved. He's managing perfectly well on his own.
Sheila walks off, and Toadie commends Amy's restraint.
Lassiter's Lake
Terese is looking pensive, when Paul turns up. He's heard from Leo that they're still going away for the weekend.
TERESE: We're trying to get past, the, umm...
PAUL: The proposal, yeah. Ah, Terese, don't be too hard on him. We all do stupid things in the name of love.
TERESE: Hmm. Especially the two of us.
PAUL: Hmm. But you obviously still have Feelings™ for him. And he certainly loves you. He sees a future with you. Just promise me you won't break his heart.
Paul walks away, leaving Terese looking conflicted.
No 30
Toadie tells Sonya about having secured Gary's services at the nursery. Sonya seems inexplicably pleased. She says they need to fill out some health insurance forms.
TOADIE: You know what? Can we just chill for a bit, and relax, and enjoy this cuppa? And we can talk about some of the neighbourhood gossip!
SONYA: Ooh, is there something to tell? What it is?
TOADIE: Well, it involves Sheila and Amy, and what sounds like a very bad self-help book.
SONYA: Intriguing! What else, what else?
TOADIE: I also heard about a very public marriage proposal that didn't go as planned!
SONYA: Ooooooh!
Ramsay Street
Leo is loading up the car, and when Terese turns up, he starts telling her about all the romantic things he has planned for their weekend away. During the course of the conversation, Leo admits he'd propose to Terese again - not another ambush, but sometime in the future. Terese looks uncomfortable.
LEO: I see us being together forever. Soulmates.
TERESE: Wait - stop, stop, stop! I'm sorry - I can't do this!
LEO: You don't want to go away?
TERESE: No, I can't do any of it. You and me, it's not just a timing thing... it's... I don't think it's working anymore.
LEO: ... But you agreed. You agreed we had something good. We were gonna try and work on it.
TERESE: When I said that, I really wanted to believe it. But I can't ignore the truth. I'm sorry, Leo... It's over.
Leo looks forlorn.
