No 30
Sonya is talking to Toadie in the kitchen, and disputing the wisdom of his plan to help Steph use Philippa's affair as leverage in some kind of custody arrangement of Charlie.
SONYA: It seems wrong, and it seems risky.
TOADIE: Okay, yes, it is not my preferred tactic. But this is the way the legal system works, and you have to play the game (...) That's exactly what Max did to get custody in the first place.
Sonya continues to insist that it feels wrong. But Toadie says he just wants to see Steph get Charlie and Adam back in her life for good. Steph comes in with Charlie, having been kicking a footie about. When Charlie leaves the room, Steph tells the Rebecchis she's not going for custody rights - Charlie still doesn't want her to say anything to Max about Philippa's affair.
STEPH: But what I can do is talk to Philippa while she's here in Melbourne.
Sonya's Nursery
Piper is struggling with a massive box of apples while on the phone to Dipi; Piper is juicing the fruit for her for a footie team fundraiser. Cassius is lingering around distractedly, and gives Piper an odd look when she asks if she can help him - before eventually replying that he's looking for some potting mix. Piper sells him a bag, and as she goes to fetch his change, Cassius watches her curiously.
PIPER: Is the lack of shirt really necessary?
CASSIUS: I'm a gardener.
As he picks up the potting mix to carry it away, he knocks Piper's box of apples into a wheelbarrow full of manure! He apologises cursorily, but just walks off, leaving Piper gasping at his rudeness.
Harold's Café
Dipi, Shane and Mishti are setting up for the fundraiser for Yashvi's footie team. Piper turns up, with bottles of orange juice rather than apple, explaining that the apples Cassius knocked over fell in the manure and were unsalvageable! Yashvi is sitting at the counter looking miserable; from what she says about her latest game, it's clear her confidence has been knocked.
Once the family is out of earshot, Piper asks Yashvi if she's had any further run-ins with Marisa, the racist teammate. Piper suspects that Yashvi played badly on purpose in her latest game so Marisa wouldn't say anything - but Yashvi denies this. Piper encourages Yashvi to tell Dipi what has happened, but Yashvi insists it was just a one-off, before walking off. Piper looks unconvinced.
The Flametree Retreat
Piper arrives with a plant delivery, and encounters Xanthe in reception - Piper's caught her in the lie of claiming she was studying when actually she's been having a facial at the retreat.
XANTHE: Okay, full disclosure - Gran hired a new gardener and he is *hot*!
She provides a convoluted explanation as to how Cassius being hot is the reason why she originally intended studying and ended up getting a facial.
PIPER: I actually can't remember the last time I heard you gush about a guy who wasn't Ben, or a Hemsworth.
XANTHE: Okay, he literally could be a Hemsworth. He's so beautiful, and kind, and he looks like he has such a lovely personality!
PIPER: Seriously?!
XANTHE: If you have any sense, you will come over this afternoon and have a look yourself.
The Waterhole
Steph is confronting Philippa about her affair. Rattled, Philippa insists she made a mistake, and that she's committed to her marriage with Max. But Steph is concerned about the position Philippa's put Charlie in, by asking him not to tell his dad what he knows.
STEPH: That's just irresponsible - you know that.
PHILIPPA: It's such a mess. I didn't know what else to do. I can't lose my husband.
STEPH: Look - Charlie's asked if he can stay with me for a while, and I think it's a good idea.
Philippa objects strenuously, asking how she'd explain this to Max - he'd never let Charlie stay with Steph without good reason.
PHILIPPA: Charlie has to come back with me.
STEPH: Really? You want to force a boy to face his dad keeping this kind of secret, do you?
PHILIPPA: Please. Once we get home, and Charlie sees Max and me working it out - loving each other - then everything will be better. Time will heal this. Then it won't be a burden on Charlie anymore.
STEPH: I disagree.
But Philippa says there's no other option - she will protect her marriage, and look after Charlie.
Harold's Café
Dipi, Mishti and Shane are setting up for the fundraiser, but we can barely hear what they're saying as we focus on a troubled-looking Yashvi, sitting at the counter. She's received a text message, and is upset by its contents. Dipi notices that Yashvi's looking sad and assumes it's because of her lacklustre performance in the footie match. They try to cheer her up with talk of the fundraiser.
YASHVI: I'm not coming!
DIPI: What? You have to!
SHANE: Yeah, be a good sport.
YASHVI: No - I'm not coming, and that's final!
She knocks over a chair and marches out of the door, leaving everyone confused.
No 26
Cassius is trimming Sheila's foliage - topless, of course - while Xanthe ogles him from the patio. She starts asking him inane gardening questions. Cassius teasingly reminds her that she has homework to do. Xanthe says she's doing it by talking to him!
XANTHE: Do you not realise that plants are biology? Have you never heard of photosynthesis, the continuity of life? It's all interconnected.
CASSIUS: Well argued. Top marks.
XANTHE: Thank you!
Piper arrives to perve on the new gardener, but on seeing Cassius is unimpressed - realising they've already met at the nursery earlier.
PIPER (to Cassius): Yeah, the apples were completely ruined. Thanks for asking (!)
Cassius just continues trimming. Piper asks if he has anything to say.
CASSIUS: I said I was sorry.
Piper fumes, so Xanthe drags her inside before she has a chance to explode at him. In the house, Xanthe says Piper is going a bit overboard just for the sake of some apples. But Piper retorts that Xanthe didn't see how rude Cassius was earlier.
PIPER: You said that he was kind. He's the opposite of that.
XANTHE: He's still hot, though, right?
PIPER: Xanthe!!
XANTHE: You were checking him about before - I saw you!
PIPER: No, I wasn't - and stop it! I don't objectify people!
XANTHE: Why not?!
PIPER: Would you be okay if a man was doing this at a woman?
XANTHE: No, but you can't compare the two situations. I mean, a man will always be more privileged than a woman. It's the power imbalance that causes the problem.
PIPER: Well, that's just one opinion.
XANTHE: Yeah, yours - from your vlogs! I watch your stuff - that's how I knew that reverse sexism is a grey area! And that I can have the hots for Cassius!
PIPER: Fine. But you broke up with Ben so you could focus on studying.
Xanthe takes the point, and decides to head back to the library.
Lassiter's Lake
Yashvi is practising her kicking skills in the park, when Mishti approaches. Seeing Yashvi's still upset, Mishti asks if it's about the awards that are being handed out to the team at the fundraiser event - is Yashvi worried she won't get one? Yashvi replies that she doesn't want an award - she could do without the attention.
MISHTI: You deserve the attention.
YASHVI: But I'm just so new, and -
MISHTI: No, enough! You've well and truly proven yourself. And whether you get an award or not, you need to start owning your achievements if you want to go further with footie.
Mishti adds that Dipi and Shane have put a lot of effort into the fundraiser because they want to celebrate Yashvi's success - especially Dipi. Yashvi feels bad for snapping at Dipi before, and Mishti convinces her to come back and take part in the fundraiser/awards ceremony.
No 30
Charlie is watching TV, while Steph and Sonya quietly discuss how to play the situation with Philippa. Charlie gets a phone call, but ignores it. Steph correctly guesses that it was Max, and that Charlie doesn't want to talk to him as he's worried about being dishonest by not mentioning Philippa's affair. Charlie goes outside with the footie.
Steph points out to Sonya how affected Charlie is by Philippa's affair; Philippa clearly has no idea, says Sonya, or doesn't want to see it.
STEPH: But if Charlie is not her priority, then I go back to Toadie's suggestion. I use this to get a new custody arrangement going... You don't agree, do you?
SONYA: Look, I will agree with whatever you decide.
STEPH: But?
SONYA: But if you do this, and it goes to court, it doesn't mean that it's gonna work.
STEPH: But what if it does, Son? I could have both my kids! I'm going to have Adam back in my life, and to think that Charlie could be there too, it's just like - this is worth trying for!
SONYA: Okay, yeah - you could win Charlie back. But at what cost? All the adults in his life would be at each other's throats. I mean, is that really what you want for him? I'm just saying, don't do this unless you're prepared to deal with the consequences.
Harold's Café
Toadie arrives for the footie fundraiser, to find Dipi very upset that Yashvi has done a runner. What's more, Dipi's convinced it's her fault, worrying that she's overstepped again and that she should have checked with Yashvi that she was happy for them to host the event. But at that moment, Yashvi returns with Mishti, and apologises for being a brat before.
Dipi apologises for being all gung-ho about the event. Yashvi tries to assure her that wasn't what it was about, but Dipi isn't listening, and promises she'll play it low-key at the awards later; Shane can do the presentations, and Dipi will just serve food in the background. Yashvi looks at a bowl of samosas that Dipi has prepared, and looks worried.
YASHVI: Is that what we're serving? What about the sausage rolls from before?
Dipi assures her they're on the way too. But we soon see why Yashvi was looking worried; Marisa has arrived, and when Dipi offers her a samosa, she replies...
MARISA: No, thank you. I don't eat those.
Marisa gives Yashvi a mean look.
The Waterhole
Steph is meeting with Philippa again.
PHILIPPA: How can you do this? Use my private business to manipulate me? It's not right.
STEPH: I don't want to, Philippa. But I have to think about what's best for my son.
PHILIPPA: He's our son too. We're his family.
STEPH: I know that.
PHILIPPA: Then why are you trying to take him away from us?
STEPH: There is one more option - a compromise (...) You go back to Fiji alone, you tell Max about the affair yourself, while Charlie stays here with me - then you and Max can sort out your issues before Charlie returns.
PHILIPPA: No - no, you're playing me. All of us. You know how this will end.
STEPH: Again, I'm only thinking of Charlie.
PHILIPPA: Well, you don't have any rights! Max and I are the ones with lawful custody over him, so you don't get to call the shots here.
STEPH: Oh, except you've just gone and put Charlie in the middle of your personal mess. So you're not exactly in a position to be calling any shots either. You made a mistake, Philippa - so now you have a choice, right? You can either take responsibility and have a go at trying to fix this, or you can fight it and risk losing everything.
Philippa has no choice but to agree that Charlie can stay with Steph for a while.
Sonya's Nursery
Piper is handing over to Sonya at the end of her shift. She's just telling her about the apples that 'a super-rude customer' ruined, when they walk around the corner and find a new crate of apples waiting for them! Cassius has left a note on them, saying, 'I really am sorry'.
SONYA: Maybe the super-rude customer wasn't that rude after all?
PIPER: Maybe.
Harold's Café
The footie fundraiser is now in full swing - and the Eden Hills Dolphins and their parents (and Toadie) are all gathered expectantly as Shane prepares to announce the team awards, preluding it with some dad jokes! Marisa sneers as Shane thanks Dipi for all the work she's put in - and then makes a beeline for the bathroom, where Yashvi is trying to calm herself down with deep breathing.
Without saying a word, Marisa walks right in front of Yashvi, and studies her own hair and face in the mirror with satisfaction - her body language clearly designed to psych out Yashvi and make her feel inferior.
MARISA: Good luck (!)
Marisa walks out of the bathroom, leaving Yashvi even more upset than before. Shane is just announcing the winner of the Rising Star Award (which has been chosen by the coaching team, not him!) - and it's none other than Yashvi! Marisa looks annoyed, but Yashvi is nowhere to be seen. She can hear everything from the bathroom, where she's crying...
No 30
Steph is filling Charlie in on what's happened with Philippa - he can stay a while, and by the time he gets back to Fiji, Max and Philippa will hopefully have sorted everything out. Charlie is relieved, and also excited to get to spend some time with his half-brother Adam in Sydney.
CHARLIE: And I guess spending time with you isn't too bad, either!
STEPH: Aww, gee, thanks!
Sonya looks pleased at how things have come together as she folds the washing, as Steph and Charlie prepare for a Jurassic Park movie marathon. As Charlie fetches some snacks, Sonya tells Steph that it seems she made the best choice for everybody.
Harold's Café
Yashvi is still crying in the bathroom when Dipi comes in looking for her.
DIPI: What's happened? What's wrong?
A tearful Yashvi doesn't reply, and Dipi hugs her.
DIPI: What is it, darling?
YASHVI: It's Marisa.
DIPI: Marisa? What's she done?
YASHVI: I just - I thought it was over, but it just keeps happening and I don't know what to do anymore!
DIPI: You thought what was over? What's this girl doing to you?
Yashvi takes out her phone to show Dipi.
YASHVI: Mum, can you please just stay calm and not fly off the handle, and make everything worse like you usually do?
DIPI (reading the phone): She's a bigot.
YASHVI: Mum, please!
DIPI: No - this cannot continue! We've got to do something about this.
