Erinsborough Police Station
Rafael is explaining his backstory to Mishti; he was born in England, but his mum was Brazilian so they returned to Brazil in the late nineties. His mum worked at a factory in São Paulo, owned by Paul.
RAFAEL: There was a fire one night - after hours. She was trapped. They tried to save her. She inhaled so much smoke... she didn't make it. The police said it was an accident, and nobody was charged. Then me and my dad, we went back to England; and then a year ago, my friend sent me a trunk. Old things from my mum. And there was a diary in it. She wrote a lot about Paul in this diary. About his dodgy workplace, and how she knew someone would get hurt. Then I knew it was him that was to blame.
The police in São Paulo said there wasn't enough evidence to prove anything, Rafael explains.
RAFAEL: So when I discovered he was here, I decided to come.
MISHTI: Why?
RAFAEL: To expose his shady dealings, so I could reopen the case. He was never gonna change. He's still doing wrong.
Rafael says he's been watching Paul at Robinson Heights, and has seen how slack his health and safety is. He claims he broke into the site to try and find proof. Mishti says he can't do that by trespassing.
RAFAEL: Look, this guy's a monster. He's the reason my mum's dead.
MISHTI: I am sorry for your loss. Truly. But it sounds like there's no hard evidence of any crimes being committed.
RAFAEL: Read the diary. Look at what happened in São Paulo; I'll give you the details!
MISHTI: It's not in our jurisdiction!
RAFAEL: Please! This man is dangerous. Everyone I ask has got a terrible story to tell me about him. Innocent people might die again. I can't live with that on my conscience - can you?
Paul's Penthouse
Paul, David, Leo and Jimmy are searching for the chess piece (which we know Rafael stole), thinking it must have been lost down the side of the cushions or vacuumed up by housekeeping. Amy comes in looking pretty awkward - and once Paul has taken Jimmy to school, David and Leo quickly guess that she didn't come in last night.
Amy claims she was with Elly, but David and Leo can tell she's lying, and tease her, asking who she was really with. When Leo spots the hickey on her neck, she looks horrified, before running out of the room! David and Leo laugh at her expense.
Ramsay Street
Steph is about to head to the backpackers' to return some of Jack's possessions. Toadie offers to do it for her, but she says it's okay.
STEPH: I promise I won't deck him with it!
Piper and Terese approach, and Piper gives Toadie a letter, asking if he could give it to Tyler when he sees him in jail. Toadie says he doesn't think Tyler's reading them and he hasn't changed his mind about breaking up with Piper, but takes the letter nonetheless.
Toadie explains that Philip Banks is still in solitary confinement, and that Tyler is still refusing a prison transfer so that Mark and Aaron can visit.
PIPER: But not me.
TOADIE: I'm sorry.
As soon as Toadie has gone, Piper bursts into tears, and Terese comforts her.
PIPER: If it wasn't for you, Mum, I'd be completely losing it.
Terese looks guiltily over Piper's shoulder as they hug.
The Waterhole
Mishti bumps into Leo. She says she's here for a coffee and to 'have a bit of a think'. She tells Leo in deliberately vague terms about the person she was interviewing this morning, saying their story could be unfounded but huge if it turned out to be true. Unaware she's talking about Paul, Leo tells her to go for it if that's her instinct.
MISHTI: The investigation involves some documents from Brazil. Did you say your dad spent some time there?
LEO: Yeah. Why?
MISHTI: Just thought I might get some insider info on the place.
Leo invites Mishti to dinner so she can talk to Paul about it then, but she shrugs it off and says she won't bother him with it. Leo says she should come to dinner nonetheless.
Gary and Terese come in. Gary empathises with Tyler's position; he never wanted anyone visiting him in prison either. But Terese is feeling guilty about Xanthe taking the blame for her having informed the police of Tyler and Piper's runaway - and says she wants to tell Piper the truth. Gary says things would have been worse if Terese hadn't told the police; Piper will understand.
TERESE: I just need to choose the right time to do it.
Harold's Café
Xanthe is getting a drink from the café, while on the phone to Sheila - assuring her that it's fine by her for Clive to stay over! Piper comes in to drop off an invoice before hurrying out again, but Xanthe stops her and attempts to talk. Xanthe suggests that she, Piper and Ben could hang out at the garage this afternoon. Piper doesn't even dignify this with a response.
XANTHE: So, I was just wondering... I think that you blocked me on all of your social media accounts. Is that...?
PIPER: ...
XANTHE: Look, I understand why you're upset with me, but there has to be something that I can do. You're my best friend, Piper, and I feel like I just want to make this better. I mean, can we at least talk about it? I really miss you.
PIPER: You should've thought about that before you betrayed me. There's nothing that you can do to fix that.
Shortly afterwards, Elly is having a coffee with Amy, and notices the hickey on her neck. Elly asks what happened.
AMY: It was so bad! He was all over the place, and wore too much cologne, and... he cried afterwards.
ELLY (laughing): Please tell me we're not talking about Jayden.
AMY: No, we're not.
Erinsborough High School
Jimmy and Kirsha are in the yard, when Wayne Baxter approaches and sits next to Jimmy!
WAYNE: Jimmy - Jimbo! What are you up to, mate?
JIMMY: (...) Am I in trouble, Mr Baxter?
WAYNE: No! Just having a yack.
Harold's Café
Amy admits that it was Wayne who she slept with!
ELLY: *Wayne* Wayne?
AMY (shamefaced): Wayne Baxter, Wayne.
ELLY: But - but he's a creep! And he's your son's teacher! Please tell me you were abducted by aliens.
AMY: But he was there, you know? And I'd had those dreams about Jayden, and...
ELLY: But it's Wayne!
AMY: Yeah, but it'd been so long, Elly.
ELLY: Babe, it's Wayne!!
Erinsborough High School
Wayne continues to make awkward conversation with Jimmy.
WAYNE: So how's your mum going?
JIMMY: She's good.
WAYNE: How was she this morning?
JIMMY: Fine.
WAYNE: Do you know what movies she likes? Love Actually? Strictly Ballroom?
JIMMY: Uh, I dunno...
Harold's Café
Amy admits to Elly that every time she's attracted to someone it ends in disaster, so she thought she'd try something different! But she made Wayne promise not to tell anyone so Jimmy wouldn't find out.
ELLY: Right. Because Wayne is the king of discretion (!)
Erinsborough High School
On the bench...
WAYNE: I was chatting to your mum last night. She's really nice!
JIMMY: ... Yeah?
WAYNE: I'm always looking out for you, mate. Make sure she knows that, alright?
JIMMY: Can I go now, Mr Baxter?
Harold's Café
Elly advises Amy to shut Wayne down as soon as possible.
AMY: I'll text him.
ELLY: No, no - texts can be misinterpreted. You have to do it face-to-face.
AMY: No. No!
ELLY: Amy, he is a stage-five clinger! You cannot negotiate with the stage-fives! Terminate immediately.
Erinsborough Backpackers
Steph unceremoniously hands Jack his bag of possessions.
STEPH: I think everything's in there - even your Bible. You might wanna read it (!)
JACK: Had that one coming.
STEPH: So, I will pay for anything that needs to be replaced.
JACK: Oh, look, it's fine - don't worry about it. I still want you to come to Gabe's naming day. If you...
STEPH (laughs): With you and Paige?! Oh, Jack. One day you're gonna realise that not everything can be fixed with the power of love and forgiveness. Okay, I shouldn't have done what I did - but I'll never be mates with you and Paige again. Life's too short, and you're both too selfish.
Steph walks out, and Jack heads into the dorm to drop off some clean sheets and towels. He sees Rafael changing his shirt, and notices the prominent scars on his back. Clearly rattled by his scars being seen, Rafael pulls a shirt on, and storms past Jack and out of the hostel. Jack looks confused.
Erinsborough High School
For some reason - possibly her own amusement - Elly has dragged Amy back to school with her so that she can have a face-to-face confrontation with Wayne. They encounter Jimmy and Kirsha first; and Jimmy immediately guesses that Amy is here about Wayne.
JIMMY: He's just been asking about you.
Wayne himself appears, and looks thrilled to see Amy.
WAYNE: I got your text.
ELLY: Oh, Wayne! New cologne, hey?
Elly herds the kids off to class, while Amy prepares to let Wayne down gently.
WAYNE: I don't want to be too forward. But just so you know, I don't normally do things like we did last night.
AMY: I got that impression! It's not my typical behaviour either.
WAYNE: So it meant something to you too?
AMY: Umm...?!
WAYNE: Great. I've got tickets to a screening of Gone with the Wind this weekend.
AMY: What - what?!
WAYNE: I thought we could go to dinner beforehand? You know, make a night of it?
Amy tells Wayne she can't be in a relationship right now, after too many bad experiences.
WAYNE: That bloke in prison? I was asking around.
AMY: Yeah - I just need to focus on Jimmy, and work, and... If the timing was different, I mean, who knows? But right now, I just can't. I'm sorry.
WAYNE: It's alright - I understand. I've been hurt too.
AMY: ... Right! Then I'll let you get back to work!
He goes in for the hug, but Amy shakes his hand instead. It's clear he hasn't yet got the message.
The Waterhole
A sobbing Xanthe comes in with Gary, explaining how Piper has decided to cut her off altogether. Terese is horrified, and decides this has gone on long enough. Despite Xanthe's objections, Terese says she's going to go and tell Piper the truth about who called the police on her.
Harold's Café
Jack comes in and finds Rafael at a table. He apologises for walking in on him before, and says that if he wants some extra privacy, he could upgrade to a private room at the backpackers'. Rafael says he can't afford it; and when Jack says he could do some odd jobs around the place as a quid pro quo, Rafael brusquely tells him he already has a job, and walks off.
Just as Rafael is leaving, David comes in - and asks him if he's okay after walking out on their drink the other night. David asks if it was something he said; Rafael unconvincingly replies that no, he was 'great', and then leaves. David explains to Jack about how Rafael cut short their date, and that he can't figure out what he did wrong.
JACK: I don't think it's got anything to do with you. I think he's just got issues.
Jack looks concerned.
Paul's Penthouse
Paul, Leo and Amy are having a business meeting. Leo wonders aloud whether the health and safety check on the construction site was really spontaneous, or if someone reported them.
LEO: You have made a few enemies over the years.
PAUL: No, I don't think that's in play here at all.
LEO: Do you have any disgruntled ex-employees?
PAUL: Leo, I think you're jumping at shadows.
Meanwhile, Amy gets a text from Wayne - the fifth in the last hour! He's pestering her to come downstairs so he can talk to her, and she decides to go and sort it out.
Lassiter's Complex
Amy finds Wayne waiting in the courtyard, with a rose and a note for her. Elly, David and Shane, who are hanging out near Harold's, sit down to watch the show!
WAYNE: I've written you a poem.
AMY: ... Ah.
WAYNE: And I'm gonna stand here while you read it.
AMY: ... Okay. (reading) 'Let me choke the fear from your heart; we are two halves of the one part; when our eyes meet, nothing but bliss; every moment I crave your kiss; the brightest sky has nothing on you; you make me sing, I hope you feel this too.' Wayne, what are you doing?!
WAYNE: I just wanted to show you that you don't have to be afraid of being hurt by me.
AMY: By writing me a poem?!
WAYNE: It's romantic!
AMY: No, no, no - Wayne, it's...
WAYNE: But I thought you liked me!
AMY: I, erm... I was being nice. When I said something could happen in the future, I lied. I'm not into you, Wayne; I had so much to drink, and I'm sorry if you feel like you've been used, but it shouldn't have happened, and it's not gonna happen again.
WAYNE: So you just used me for my body?!
David, Elly and Shane snigger in the background, as a mortified Amy apologises to Wayne! He grabs the rose and poem, and walks off. Amy joins the other RSRs, and Elly notes that some of Wayne's poem sounds suspiciously like the letter he sent to Elly when he was pursuing her.
AMY: I'm gonna be a villain in his next self-published novel, aren't I?
ELLY: Welcome to the club, baby!
The Waterhole
Mishti is updating Rafael; she's spoken to the police in São Paulo and has looked at Paul's file, but hasn't been able to find anything supporting his claim. Rafael asks her to keep digging - but as a closed case from another country, there's a limit to what Mishti can do. She says she can't use police resources without at least interviewing Paul, which would mean revealing Rafael's complaint.
RAFAEL: No. Not yet. You can't do that.
MISHTI: Then I'm sorry - I'll have to stop.
RAFAEL: If you respected my mother, you'd keep investigating.
MISHTI: And you're obviously still dealing with that trauma. I can sympathise; trust me. There are some excellent counsellors I can put you in touch with.
RAFAEL: I don't want a counsellor. I want justice. Look - you listened to me because you know that on some level, Paul Robinson is capable of this.
MISHTI: ... There's nothing I can do.
RAFAEL: Then I hope for your sake that more innocent people don't die.
Harold's Café
Terese joins Piper at a table. Piper's been thinking of strategies to try to get to see Tyler, including asking Fay to put pressure on him to see her. Terese announces that there's something Piper needs to know.
TERESE: I need you to try and stay calm and talk to me before you react, okay?
PIPER: Okay...
TERESE: When you went missing on the day of the trial, I forced Xanthe to tell me where you'd gone. I was terrified about your safety. Look - I know you think that it was Xanthe who called the police. But she wasn't the one that told them where you and Tyler were. I did.
The Waterhole
David, Leo and Paul are all having enormous fun at Amy's expense over Wayne and his poetry, while she sits there cringing. Rafael watches them broodingly, and takes the stolen chess piece from his pocket, before snapping its head off with menace.
Jimmy turns up, and Amy asks if anyone gave him a hard time at school. He says not. Mishti then arrives, and Paul acknowledges that Leo had said she'd be coming for dinner. Perturbed by what Rafael has told her, Mishti announces that she might raincheck after a heavy day at work.
MISHTI: Someone said something that got to me, that's all.
She glances at Paul, who appears to notice the odd look she gives him, before making an exit. Rafael grimaces from behind the bar.
Ramsay Street
Mishti joins Shane, Kirsha and Toadie in the street - just in time to see fireworks emerge between Terese and Piper, who storms out of No 22 with bags of possessions.
TERESE: Please, just slow down - let's talk about this properly!
PIPER: (...) No, Mum - no! You led me to believe that you were the one person I could rely on - when actually, you're the one that stabbed me in the back! You're the reason Tyler got arrested, and you're the reason that we can't be together! I want nothing to do with you!
Terese looks upset as Piper walks towards No 24.
