Erinsborough Police Station
Piper and Aaron are in the waiting area when Tyler arrives - he doesn't understand what's going on. At this moment, his mum Fay comes in, with a police officer.
FAY: I'm sorry. I shouldn't have waited so long before coming forward.
TYLER: What? You're the one that confessed?
But the police officer ushers Fay away before she can say any more, despite Tyler's pleas for more information.
TYLER: There's no way she killed Hamish!
AARON: That's not what she says!
TYLER: Well, she's obviously doing it for me!
Piper tells Tyler to calm down - he won't know anything until he can speak to Fay properly.
The Waterhole
Mark is with Toadie, explaining that Fay drove off in Mark's car from Adelaide to 'sort some things out' with Tyler - he had no idea she was going to confess, although she did seem desperate. Mark says he couldn't call anyone as he lost his phone, so came back ASAP.
MARK: So you'll represent her?
TOADIE: I will see what I can do.
Toadie heads off to the police station just as Tyler comes in. He tells Mark that they can't let Fay take the blame for Tyler's mistakes.
TYLER: You don't believe she's actually telling the truth, do you?
MARK: I don't know what to think!
Erinsborough High School
Xanthe and Gary are with Elly in her office. Xanthe continues to protest her innocence, saying someone put the minibar bottles in her bag - and that she thinks it was Tia Martinez, as revenge for Xanthe telling on her for bullying Kirsha. Elly appears sceptical, but Xanthe's assurances that she didn't take the bottles are good enough for Gary.
XANTHE: I just came back to school! Why would I ruin everything for something so stupid?!
Elly promises to question Tia, but says she'll need to send Xanthe home until they have more information. Gary protests, citing innocence until proven guilty.
ELLY: I have to do it by the book (...) I will investigate this as quickly as I can.
Xanthe storms out. Elly tells Gary she can't play favourites; Gary retorts that in the meantime, Xanthe will be hung out to dry.
No 28
Susan and Karl arrive home from the UK, mid-argument! Susan is annoyed that Holly has once again been left with Mal and Catherine because Izzy wasn't back from her holiday on time to pick her up.
SUSAN: That is so typical of Isabelle, isn't it? God forbid she should face up to the consequences of her actions!
KARL: We don't know what happened yet! Her flight could've been delayed.
SUSAN: Oh, come on, Karl! She deliberately missed the handover with Holly so she wouldn't have to see us!
KARL: (...) Don't you think you're being a bit harsh?
SUSAN: Why do you always defend her?
KARL: Oh, darling - Izzy is Izzy! She's not gonna change however much you get worked up about it!
SUSAN: Great! So she just gets away with bad behaviour?!
KARL: Isn't the important thing that Holly got to spend Christmas with us? Yes? I think it is.
Sheila barges in uninvited, and Susan hugs her while Karl struggles to disguise his annoyance at the intrusion! Susan congratulates Sheila on her decision to sit Year 12. Sheila says Clive will be the perfect tutor.
SUSAN: Oh, I bet he will!
SHEILA: Oh, will you get your mind out of the gutter? He's only a guest tutor, you know - only a few classes. So I won't see him all that often.
KARL: Did Clive mention anything about the New Hospital Wing™?
SUSAN: I think that's a record, Karl - five minutes without mentioning the New Hospital Wing™! Not that I'm counting.
Susan and Sheila hurry out for a coffee, with Susan complaining that she is never flying 'cattle-class' again. Karl shouts after her that he bought her a pillow!
Lassiter's Lake
Xanthe is walking through the park with Ben and Gary; they assure her that the school will get to the bottom of what happened with the minibar bottles. But Xanthe is concerned that no-one will dob Tia in for framing her, as she's the 'queen bee'. Terese turns up; she says she's had a call from Elly at the school asking if any alcohol had gone missing from Lassiter's, and that she had to confirm it had.
TERESE: Listen - I'm sorry, but the amount of alcohol that's missing is quite substantial. And there were bottles found in your bag. Look, until we get a clearer picture, I'm gonna have to take you off the roster. I'm sorry, Xanthe.
Lassiter's Complex
Fay emerges from the police station and joins Aaron and Tyler, who've been waiting outside. She says that Toadie is still talking to the police inside; they want to check out her statement before charging her with anything.
TYLER: I know what you're trying to do, and I love you for it. But I can't let you cover for me.
FAY: I wish I was covering, believe me.
AARON: Mum, no-one is going to believe you killed Hamish. You are half his size!
FAY: He was already weak after Tyler hit him. He fell into the spa on his own! All I had to do -
TYLER: Stop - stop!
FAY: Look - I went over to Sheila's to warn her about Hamish and Louise. And when I got there, he was in the back yard and I confronted him. When he confessed, I just - well, I just lost it! I wanted to hurt him for everything he'd done! I know I should have said something sooner, but I didn't want to believe I'd done it. And then you were charged. And I should never have let you think that you were responsible. I am so sorry.
Tyler and Aaron glance at each other, not knowing what to think.
The Waterhole
Paige comes in and finds Mark sitting at a table. They hug; it's clear Paige has now been filled in on the situation with Fay. Mark expresses surprise that Paige went to Adelaide to find him; she says she was worried because he wasn't returning her calls. He explains that he picked up another phone on the way home, and apologises - but Paige isn't satisfied.
PAIGE: I can't help but think that if you really wanted to contact me, you could've. I hate it when you go quiet on me like this!
MARK: I know. And I promised I wouldn't do that anymore. But you'd just gone through all that stuff with Gabe, and I didn't want to dump more stuff on you.
PAIGE: Babe, your stuff *is* my stuff. We're in this together.
They kiss and hug. Mark feels guilty for having stuffed everything up, both with keeping Paige in the dark and not realising what was going on with Fay - she had been quiet and not eating, but he assumed she was just depressed about Russell and Tyler.
PAIGE: Do you really think she did it?
MARK: It's hard to believe. Really hard. But... she confessed.
No 22
Piper is at home when Tyler and Aaron arrive; they explain Fay is having some time to herself at No 24, and is still avoiding answering their questions. Tyler says he still doesn't believe her; she's not strong enough to kill Hamish and wouldn't do it anyway.
PIPER: Well, she did say that Hamish was weak and off-balance... Ty, this means that you hitting him on the head didn't kill him!
AARON: No, sorry Pipes - can I just point something out here? This either means that Ty gets done for this, or Mum does. There are no winners here!
PIPER: Yeah, I know, Aaron!
AARON: Are you sure about that?!
PIPER: Hey - I didn't make your mum come forward and confess!
Annoyed by Piper's attitude, Aaron leaves. Tyler tells Piper not to worry; he's just upset. Piper says that if anything can stop Tyler from going to jail, that's a good thing - but Tyler says not if it's his mum. He appears to have a sudden realisation, and says he needs to go and take care of something, before leaving.
Harold's Café
Jack is telling Steph about his adventures with Paige in Adelaide, and Gabe calling him 'Dada'. Steph recalls how happy her ex-husband Max was when their son Charlie first called him 'Daddy'.
JACK: It's funny. I never even thought about having kids until Gabe. I just shut the door on that when I took my vows. But now, I can't imagine life without him.
Tyler comes in, and asks to talk to Steph outside. They leave together.
At another table, Sheila and Susan are having a coffee. Sheila remarks that Susan doesn't look as if she's had a happy holiday in London. Susan says it's been wonderful to see Holly, but that she's frustrated by the way Karl is always compensating for Izzy - and that Susan always has to bite her tongue. (Not that they even saw her on this trip, because Izzy didn't want to look her in the eye.)
SUSAN: I just wish that Karl would stand up to Isabelle sometimes! (...) I complain, he defends her, we argue, nothing gets resolved.
Conversation moves to the new hospital wing, as Sheila tells Susan about the major new donation that is kickstarting the project...
Paul's Penthouse
In the lift, Jimmy guiltily eyes the wad of money he's earned from selling the stolen alcohol to Gus Martinez. He stuffs it in his bag before entering the penthouse.
Paul is at home, talking to Karl about the new hospital wing, and telling him it will be named after Helen Daniels, Paul's late gran.
KARL: Don't get me wrong - I had a lot of respect for your grandmother. But, you know, this naming rights thing - it's a big issue!
PAUL: This coming from the man who wanted to call it the Karl Kennedy Wing?
KARL: Oh, that was just a thought - just in recognition of all my hard work.
PAUL: Yeah, a bad one at that. You should be grateful that this wing is going ahead at all!
Karl asks why Paul's getting involved, saying he's no philanthropist. Paul says maybe he's changed. Karl says that putting Helen's name on the hospital wing won't make up for all the bad things Paul's done - he can't buy respect!
PAUL: Karl, I'm sorry if I stole your thunder. But it was never yours in the first place! Don't worry - I'll make sure you get an invite to the opening!
Karl storms out, as Terese arrives. She tells Paul she's had to suspend Xanthe over the missing alcohol, since it's now shown up at school and Xanthe has been accused of selling it. Jimmy listens to all this, now feeling even guiltier than before...
Harold's Café
Jimmy is coming clean to Xanthe and Ben. He explains he was just trying to pay for Kirsha's smart watch to make life easier for her, but Xanthe is not impressed that he stole from her housekeeping cart. Jimmy didn't think the minibar bottles would be missed, and says he didn't mean to get Xanthe in trouble. He promises to fix this by telling everyone what he's done.
Jimmy explains that Tia had the bottles because she was helping him sell them to her brother and his friends. Xanthe is even angrier now.
XANTHE: But mostly I'm Disappointed™. I thought we were buddies, Jimmy. You've really let me down.
JIMMY: I'm really sorry.
Jimmy saunters off looking contrite, as Xanthe rants to Ben about how annoyed she is. Ben reminds her that Jimmy was trying to do a good thing for Kirsha.
No 24
Tyler has brought Steph around to talk to Fay about her prison experience, apparently in the hope that Fay will change her mind about her confession. Steph paints a pretty bleak picture of prison, and says that her experience was in minimum security - Fay would be in a maximum-security facility for murder.
STEPH: That's a whole other world. Everything you know - everyone you love - will be gone. The worst thing about being in prison is being alone.
Tyler wants to take a worried-looking Fay back to the station to retract her statement, but she's not so easily swayed.
FAY: It's not your choice, Tyler. I killed Hamish - I will face the consequences (...) You can't change what I've done. Nobody can.
Erinsborough High School
Xanthe, Gary and Terese are back in Elly's office - Elly apologises for what Xanthe has been through and tells her she's no longer suspended from school. Terese also apologises, and adds that Xanthe can have her job back at Lassiter's now everyone knows the truth. Xanthe also wants to be involved in the Dream Event competition, and Terese agrees to this.
Xanthe asks what's going to happen to Tia. Elly says she'll be suspended, but that there will be other repercussions too. Xanthe doesn't think it's fair that she won't be expelled, but Elly says it's Tia's first offence - and that she'd prefer to work with her parents to improve her behaviour, rather than casting her off. Xanthe asks what will happen to Jimmy.
Paul's Penthouse
Amy is reading a very contrite Jimmy the riot act, and Paul is backing her up. She says she'll have to ring Elly to see how she wants to handle it.
AMY: Go to your room! I need to calm down before I decide what even to do with you!
Once Jimmy's gone, Paul tells Amy not to blame herself - this isn't her fault. But Amy feels that it is, because she's the one who should've taught Jimmy right from wrong. Paul says Amy isn't a bad parent - Jimmy's a teenager and it's part of his job description to make mistakes.
PAUL: He is a smart kid. He'll learn from this, and he won't do it again.
AMY: Well, I hope you're right! You know, it seems like just yesterday when he was... learning to ride a bike. Where's my sweet little boy gone?
Harold's Café
Dipi is giving Kirsha a hug following her ordeal at school. Xanthe comes in, and Dipi is super-grateful to her for helping Kirsha through her first period.
DIPI: Thank you. Knowing she had someone to turn to makes me really happy.
She promises to get Xanthe something from the menu on the house, and goes to serve a customer. Xanthe somehow discerns that Kirsha hasn't told her mum about the part about being bullied by Tia.
KIRSHA: They're already worried enough. I can handle it.
XANTHE: There's something that I need to tell you. It's about Jimmy.
As they sit down to talk about it, Paul comes in and sees that Susan is back in town. He asks her to sit down with him, and explains that as the major donor to the new hospital wing, he's been asked to nominate people to sit on the steering committee. They're looking for someone to head the committee, with strong fundraising abilities.
Susan thinks that Paul is talking about Karl, and says that she's sure he will want to be involved. But Paul tells her she's mistaken - he actually wants Susan as the head of the committee!
Paul's Penthouse
Jimmy is shining shoes as part of his punishment for stealing the alcohol. Amy comes in with Kirsha, who has something she wants to say.
KIRSHA: Xanthe told me what you did. I know you were trying to help me, but I don't want you doing that kind of stuff for any reason.
JIMMY: I won't. I promise.
Kirsha shakes her head disappointedly, and leaves. Amy comforts a visibly upset Jimmy.
Erinsborough Police Station
Tyler is also visibly upset, in the waiting area. Mishti emerges, and Tyler asks if she's checked out Fay's confession yet. Mishti says they're still looking into it, but that there's still a lot to cross-check - alibis, witness statements, forensics and so on.
Lassiter's Lake
Fay sits on a bench, looking sadly at a photo on her phone of Tyler, Aaron and Mark.
Erinsborough Police Station
Tyler continues to speak to Mishti.
TYLER: You know she didn't do it, right?
MISHTI: That's not my call to make.
TYLER: She's just trying to protect me. She thinks she owes it to me. There's no way she killed Hamish. Look - I've already told you what happened. Now if there's anything I can do to help my mum, please tell me. I'll do whatever it takes.
MISHTI: What are you saying? Are you changing your statement? You know, if her confession doesn't check out, you're back on the hook.
TYLER: Yes, I know. But I'm not gonna let her go to jail for something I did. I won't let that happen.
