Shack of Sintm
Karl is holding the crying baby, while Jack tries in vain to wake Paige up. Jack takes off his shirt for Karl to wrap the baby in, and Karl says they need to get Paige out of here. Jack picks her up and they all leave the shack, where they're met by two paramedics responding to Piper's call.
Harold's Café
Aaron's having back pain, which Mishti swiftly treats by pummelling him with her elbow! It's painful, but seems to do the trick, and Aaron calls her a miracle-worker. She offers to help him develop a new muscle programme, whatever that means.
David comes in and talks to Aaron, who asks after Will. David says he hasn't seen him in a while - it wasn't working out. Aaron makes out that he's disappointed for David.
DAVID: You were right about him, okay? Feel free to say 'I told you so'.
AARON: David, I would never -
DAVID: Sorry. I didn't mean for it to sound like that. Guess I feel like an idiot.
The conversation ends, having reached peak awkward. Meanwhile, Finn comes in just as Elly is leaving a voicemail for Susan - clearly she doesn't know yet about the unfolding drama in the bush. Finn asks Elly how her Sydney trip was; he'd 'heard on the grapevine' that she was there.
ELLY: I just had to get away.
FINN: So you weren't up there catching up with old friends?
Elly gets a call from Susan's phone, but it's Piper, telling her what's happened.
Erinsborough Hospital
The ambos rush a still unconscious Paige into hospital. Jack follows behind with the baby. Nurse Sandra Kriptic takes the baby away to run some routine tests - while Amy, who is already there on standby for no discernible reason, tells Jack he'll have him back in no time, and that Lauren is flying down from Queensland as soon as she can.
Amy asks if she can call anyone in Jack's family, or someone from the church. Jack doesn't answer, and instead gets tearful. Amy sits down next to him to comfort him.
JACK: On the drive in, Paige didn't wake up the whole time. I prayed. I just wanted her to open her eyes so I could show her our baby. That didn't happen.
AMY: Hey! Paige is young, and so strong, and they'll look after her.
JACK: She has lost a lot of blood. I've never seen her like -
He breaks down crying.
AMY: Paige loves that baby. She'll want to get back to him as soon as she can. She'll get through this. You both will.
Harold's Café
Mishti presents Aaron with his new workout plan, and a complementary diet for good measure.
AARON: How did you get into all of this?
MISHTI: When I left the force, I needed to... look after myself better.
He asks if she can talk him through it this afternoon, and she agrees, refusing his offer of payment for doing so. Tom Quill comes in.
TOM: Hello, stranger.
Surprised to see him, Aaron introduces Tom to Mishti as an 'old friend', and she goes to make him a coffee. Tom explains he's here to meet Paul about the settlement of his claim against the Quill Group, and says he might be here for a month - or maybe longer.
TOM: How much small-talk do we have to make before I can ask if you're seeing someone?
AARON: Well, I'm not. What about you?
TOM: No-one.
Tom has to go and call Paul, but hopes to see Aaron later. Aaron says he's still living in the same place. Mishti has been watching the exchange with interest.
Meanwhile, Finn is on the phone, apparently to one of his old Sydney friends.
FINN: Just wondering if Elly contacted you... What did you say? ... No, mate. No dramas. Just looking out for Elly, that's all...
Erinsborough Hospital
Elly is at the hospital to see Susan. Xanthe is about to start a shift at Harold's, so tells Elly she doesn't have time to join her (presumably Xanthe's already been to see Piper, who's Not In This Episodetm). But before she goes, Elly asks Xanthe if she's noticed anything strange about Finn recently.
ELLY: Like, erratic behaviour? Eating at odd times? Not eating at all? Irritable?
XANTHE: Why do you ask?
ELLY: When I was in Sydney, I ran into a friend of his, who said he changed a year ago. They were worried that maybe something had happened to him.
XANTHE: Like what?
ELLY: Like, a health issue.
XANTHE: How close a friend?
ELLY: His ex-wife.
XANTHE: Well, you know him better than I do. Have you noticed anything?
ELLY: No. That's why I'm asking you.
XANTHE: ... I don't really see him much at all. But I'll keep my eye out.
A little while later, Elly is telling Susan, who's in a hospital bed, about her adventures in Sydney. Elly says she buys Miranda's theory that Finn got into substance abuse.
SUSAN: Then we have to confirm it, and soon. I put everyone at risk today.
ELLY: It wasn't your fault.
SUSAN: But I feel responsible. I don't want to put the students at risk as well. I'm gonna have to take some time off because of this... illness. And like it or not, Finn is the most qualified to replace me as acting principal.
ELLY: No, no - we will go to The Departmenttm before that happens.
SUSAN: And tell them what? Some vague feeling, or suspicion? No - they're gonna want hard proof. We need to find it.
Harold's Café
Finn is still at a table when Xanthe comes in. She's on the phone to Sheila, telling her about the drama at the Shack of Sintm.
XANTHE: Susan didn't deliver the baby - Karl did... No, I already told you - they will not need to amputate Piper's legs!... Okay, I'm here now - bye!
FINN: That sounds exciting?
Xanthe then tells Finn the full story - about Paige going into labour and Susan collapsing. Paige is now in surgery, she explains.
FINN: Why did Susan collapse?
XANTHE: No-one knows. It's kind of scary.
FINN: The poor baby. And Paige...
XANTHE: You don't need to worry - it's not your fault. You need to focus on your own health. Especially now.
Xanthe goes on to reveal what Elly told her, about speaking to Finn's ex in Sydney and his behaviour changing about a year ago. Xanthe says Elly was asking about Finn's health, but that she didn't tell her anything.
XANTHE: I was thinking - maybe it's time you came clean about your condition? Everyone would understand.
FINN: They'd try to stop me teaching.
Finn says they might not be able to sack him directly, but they'd find some other excuse. Xanthe accepts this, saying that with Susan ill, Finn will need to take over at school - but adds that she doesn't think Elly's going to give up, and suggests he talk to her.
Erinsborough Hospital
We see Paige lying in a hospital bed, still unconscious - while the baby lies in the monitoring room, with Jack watching him through the window. Karl turns up, and tells him Paige is stable, while the baby has been checked out; he seems to be fine, but they're keeping him in the baby unit as a precaution to ensure he's breathing and feeding properly.
KARL: He's a fighter. Just like his mum.
No 24
Tom turns up to see Aaron. Aaron's waiting for Mishti to turn up for their training session, but invites Tom in in the meantime.
TOM: One of the reasons I insisted on coming back and doing this in person was because I wanted to see you again. I know it was me who called off last time. But I wasn't in a good place then - you know, with all the mistakes I made at Lassiter's.
AARON: Yes, I remember.
TOM: So I've been doing a lot of thinking. About where I'm going. And I want to get serious with my work life - my personal life. And I'd be interested to know if you wanted to be a part of that.
AARON: I'm kind of interested in someone.
TOM: You said you were single.
AARON: I am - I am. But I thought this guy was seeing someone, and now he's not. And I just - if I'm in with a chance, I want to see how it goes.
TOM: Does he like you?
AARON: Yeah. I think so.
TOM: You think?
AARON: I know it's all a bit sketchy. But I actually think this guy might be the one.
TOM: I hope he's worth it!
Tom awkwardly leaves.
Later, Mishti is making Aaron do laps of the pool - he calls her a sadist!
AARON: How come you left the police force again? Was it because of excessive force, maybe?
MISHTI: Have a cup of concrete and harden up.
It's clear Aaron has other things than fitness on his mind, and admits he's conflicted over two guys - but doesn't mention Tom and David by name. Leo then shows up, fishing for information about Tom Quill from Aaron, and how 'above board' he is. Aaron admits Tom hasn't always been the most ethical person, but has more recently turned things around.
LEO: Apparently you guys used to date?
AARON: Do you really need to know that? Or are you just turning into Sheila Canning?
Aaron says Leo should talk to Amy about Tom; he nearly lost his job once, trying to look out for her. Leo thanks him for the advice.
LEO: That's alright - Sheila!
Lassiter's Lake
Finn bumps into Elly, explaining he's heard that Susan is ill and asking if there's anything he can do to help. Elly says it's too early yet, and carries on walking. Finn tries another tack.
FINN: Elly - I miss our old relationship.
ELLY: Really? (!)
FINN: I keep getting the feeling that you're keeping things from me.
ELLY: Like what?
FINN: Like chatting to my ex-wife? You forgot to mention that before. How was she?
ELLY: She thought something had changed in you. About a year ago.
FINN: I found a lump on the back of my neck. It turned out to be nothing. But it did make me re-evaluate everything. I didn't love her. I loved you, Elly.
ELLY: You know if you were more upfront with people, people might actually believe you?
FINN: I've always said I loved you, and I always will. I hate all this fighting. I have put in so much to make things work here at the school. Susan will need help. And it'll be a lot easier for everyone if we can do it together.
ELLY: Not gonna happen.
Elly walks away from him.
FINN (shouting): I'm sorry to hear that.
Harold's Café
Leo and Tom are talking about Paul's settlement; Tom says the funds will be cleared by tomorrow. David turns up, and Leo introduces them. Tom shakes David's hand.
TOM: You've got a strong grip there.
Sensing flirtation and an opportunity to match-make, Leo suggests they all go out for dinner together. While Tom's at the counter, Leo admits he's trying to set David up.
DAVID: Why?!
LEO: He's not a bad guy! He helped out Amy once, and seemed to like you. Cos no offence, bro, but you do not have a strong grip. It's only dinner, and I'll be there to chaperone. Unless you don't want to come?
DAVID: Well, I guess dinner couldn't hurt...
Erinsborough Hospital
Karl tells Susan that any number of things could have caused her illness - they'll have to wait for the tests to come back tomorrow. But Susan's worried that it's her multiple sclerosis flaring up again. Karl admits it's a possibility. Finn arrives with a bunch of flowers, and Susan doesn't look pleased to see him - but grudgingly allows him to come in, despite Karl's protestations.
FINN: The Departmenttm asked me if there was anything I could do to help.
SUSAN: You've been speaking to them already?
FINN: Well, I mentioned there was a chance you mightn't be coming back over the next few days. Is that the case?
SUSAN: Yes.
FINN: They've just asked me to help out.
SUSAN: As acting principal?
FINN: Just keeping your seat warm till you get back.
SUSAN: I would have thought they'd have preferred someone with more experience.
FINN: This is only gonna be a short-term thing. They figured it would be easier if I did it.
SUSAN: Well, it's very, umm... very generous of you to offer.
FINN: Anything to help out my mentor.
SUSAN: I'll be back as soon as I can.
FINN: I wouldn't expect anything less.
Susan scowls as a smirking Finn puts the flowers on the side, and leaves.
Meanwhile, Jack is still looking at his newborn son through the window of the baby unit. Amy asks if he wants to go for dinner, but he says he can't leave.
JACK: When I became a priest, a big part of that was giving up the idea of ever having my own kids. It was kind of an abstract notion for me. And it didn't bother me, cos I knew plenty of people that lived wonderful and productive lives without them. And I've seen the damage that bad parenting can do, and people who don't want kids - who neglect them. I can't say I have the best role models as parents.
AMY: But you won't be like them.
JACK: I don't want to be. But seeing him lying there, all I want to do is just, you know, look after him. And Paige. But I can't be a priest and a dad. I can't give myself to God and my son. I thought I could. But after holding him, there is no way.
AMY: What do you mean?
JACK: I've got to leave the church.
The Waterhole
Finn finds Elly nursing a glass of wine between hospital visits. He sits down to join her, uninvited; she's already heard that Finn is taking over as acting principal till Susan gets better.
ELLY: It won't be long.
FINN: Well, hopefully not. But you never can tell with MS, can you?
ELLY: ... I didn't know you were aware of that?
FINN: Didn't realise it was a secret. Someone around school must have mentioned it.
ELLY: But we don't even know what's wrong with Susan, anyway.
FINN: Still, The Departmenttm will want to make sure she's been thoroughly checked out. Especially after she almost caused Paige to lose the baby.
ELLY: That is not what happened.
FINN: Hey - I wasn't there. That's just what people are saying.
ELLY: Well, you shouldn't always listen to rumours.
FINN: Like the rumours about you?
ELLY: Are you talking about Donald Cheng's investigation? Because I'm pretty confident I'm gonna be cleared.
FINN: Really? That seems optimistic. But then you have managed to dodge allegations of bullying and inappropriate relations with students in the past. Susan went easy on you for a reason.
ELLY: Why are you telling me this?
FINN: So you'll resign. I'm about to start a new job. I don't need to be undermined by someone running around trying to smear my name. I'd fire you, but it's too hard in this day and age. So I'm forced to performance-manage you out of a job. It'll be completely within the guidelines, completely defendable, relentless and unpleasant. That little photo I slipped into your slide presentation - that'll be nothing.
Until now, Elly has been maintaining a smile. Her face drops.
ELLY: You did that? You are absolute scum, Finn.
FINN: If you quit today, I'll even write a glowing reference. Stay - oh, stay, and things will be very, very unpleasant.
ELLY: Everything you've said is grounds for instant dismissal.
FINN: Prove I said it. Remember - you started this.
He gets up and walks out, leaving Elly looking worried.
