The Waterhole
Terese tells Gary that she knows he didn't steal the crown but Jasmine Udagawa and her grandfather won't be impressed if she doesn't deal with the situation properly. She says she'll have to suspend him from work, pending a police investigation, which doesn't sit well with Gary what with him being out on parole.
GARY: I didn't do this, I wouldn't. Not to Lassiter's... and not to you.
They share a silent moment before Terese walks off to make a phone call to Paul, asking him for a favour.
Harold's Café
Elly sits with Mark and checks in on how he's doing and if there's any "stuff" he wants to talk about. Mark isn't too keen on sharing his feelings, especially when he sees Steph walk in and proceeds to lose his appetite for lunch. Steph asks Mark if they could just sit down and have a civil chat but he says he has only one thing to say to her: Sonya has agreed to step up and help raise the baby with him so now she's off the hook, just like she wanted.
Number 32
Piper joins Brad, Lauren, Paige, Ned and David for breakfast on the back patio and says if they invited her there for another lecture, she's out. But Ned says he asked her over because he has an announcement to make: he's moving to Queensland to open up a tattoo parlour. They all say they'll miss him but they're proud of him. Lauren asks Ned if this means the end for him and Elly but Ned says he's hoping she'll still figure into his plans somehow.
Lassiter's Complex
Paul makes a quick phone call to Terese to let her know the Udagawas are here before greeting Jasmine and her grandfather, the one and only Mr Toshiro Udagawa. Paul smiles and asks Mr Udagawa if he wants to take a tour of Robinsons Motel (Mr Udagawa used to own it back in the day), to give Terese more time to hunt for the crown. Jasmine is insistent they head to Lassiter's but Mr Udagawa says he'd love to see the motel, "there's always time for old friends". Before they leave Paul introduces them to Amy, who is passing by, but Amy is more interested in spying on Leo, who is skulking around in the background with a box in his hands.
Amy follows Leo to where the dumpsters are behind the buildings and watches him attempt to clean his fingerprints off the cardboard box. Sprung, Leo says he knows it looks dodgy but he's just helping out a mate. Amy does a Brad Pitt 'what's in the booooox?' opening it to find the stolen crown and Gary's missing keys (and thankfully not someone's head). She then proceeds to make a citizen's arrest on Leo and haul him to the police station.
Police Station
Leo protests his innocence to Mark, Amy and Terese and says he didn't steal the crown - Father Jack is his alibi. Amy scoffs and says he probably paid someone off at the rec centre to do his dirty work again. Mark asks Terese if she wants to press charges and she says yes when Amy jumps in with her two cents and says Leo obviously stole it to get one up in the hotel wars. Mark tells Leo he's going to be charged with theft and if there's anyone else involved, now's the time to say something. Leo gives Amy a sidelong look but keeps quiet, so Mark takes him away for questioning.
Number 26
Amy has informed Gary, Sheila, Xanthe and Jimmy about Leo's arrest and tells Gary that Terese felt awful about accusing him. The more Amy rags on Leo and says that she hopes the cops "throw the book at him", the more squirmy and guilty Jimmy looks until he finally blurts out that he was the one who stole the crown from Lassiter's.
Lassiter's Complex/Lassiter's Hotel
While Paul chats with Jasmine and Mr Udagawa outside, Terese performs her best Mission Impossible routine to hastily put the crown back in its cabinet just as the Udagawas arrive. Jasmine compliments her on the exhibition and Mr Udagawa jokes about Terese getting bonus points for stealing the display from Paul's motel.
PAUL: What can I say? Terese outplayed me.
TERESE: And for once I'm thankful to Leo Tanaka.
MR UDAGAWA: Leo Tanaka?
TERESE: Yes, do you know him? He runs the local backpackers.
MR UDAGAWA: He has a twin called David?
PAUL: Yeah, yeah he does.
MR UDAGAWA: His mother lives here?
TERESE: No I think she lives in Sydney.
Mr Udagawa looks thoughtful before walking away. Terese asks Jasmine what all the questions were about, but Jasmine says she isn't sure.
Number 26
Amy and the rest of the Number 26 crew are trying to figure out why Jimmy stole the crown. Jimmy eventually admits it was for Xanthe, "she hasn't been noticing me much since she got back with Ben". Xanthe facepalms at Jimmy dropping the Ben-bomb while Amy tells her son that stealing isn't exactly the best way to impress a girl. Meanwhile Gaz and Sheila are all like, 'hold up, what's this about Ben?' but Xanthe turns the conversation back to Jimmy.
XANTHE: You know I was joking about wanting the crown, right? Why would you take that and roll with it?
SHEILA: It's the Canning curse. I've got it, Naomi had it, now Xanthe's got it. We are irresistible to men.
Amy asks Jimmy what Leo's role was in all of this and Jimmy says Leo caught him with it and offered to handle it so he wouldn't get busted. Amy looks chagrined and says she'll talk to Leo to sort things out. Sheila gives Xanthe a pointed look and says that's not all that needs sorting out today.
Number 28
Xanthe and Ben stand before Karl, Susan and Sheila and admit they're seeing one another again. They only kept it a secret because "you guys were feuding worse than Taylor and Katy" and they didn't want to cause more trouble. But now everything's out in the open everyone can play nice again. Karl and Sheila are still on the fence about that, but things take a turn for the amenable when Sheila says Gary only put himself on the line as a reoffending crim because he values the Kennedys respect and wanted to pay back their money. Xanthe tells Ben she thinks it's romantic their families are trying to work things out for the sake of their relationship. Susan proposes a solution to end the feud - a Kennedy/Canning BBQ.
Police Station
Amy's taken Jimmy to apologise to Mark for wasting police resources and he says that he'll accept any punishment or charge Mark thinks is necessary. Marky Mark puts on his best stern police voice and says theft is a serious crime (and if anyone is wasting resources it's probably him because he got his cop badge out of a Cornflakes box). Mark says that he's going to make sure Amy thinks up a good punishment for Jimmy.
Ramsay Street
That punishment turns out to be gardening with Gary out the front of Number 26. The Kennedys approach Gary and Susan nudges a reluctant Karl into having a cordial chat with him about Ben and Xanthe. Karl actually apologises for any misunderstandings between them and Gary looks surprised but pleased.
GARY: I guess we're going to have to try to get along. We might be in-laws one day!
Karl nearly has a conniption and Susan's smile freezes in place before she's all, "... anyway! Come over for a barbecue!" Gary smiles and says he'll be there and the Kennedys make their awkward goodbyes, only to run into Ned out the front of their place. Ned has a bouquet of flowers for Elly but the K's say she's not home. He explains he's leaving soon for the Gold Coast and Karl wonders if they're "farewell flowers" Ned's holding.
NED: Not exactly. I want Elly to come with me. (Susan gives him a WTF look) I know I've let Elly down - twice now - but I want to see if there's a way we can get things back on track.
Ned says if he didn't at least ask before he left he'd regret it, so Susan says she'll put the flowers in Elly's room.
Erinsborough Backpackers
Leo is trying to nail a shelf to the wall, and failing, so I guess it's lucky Amy comes sauntering in with a tool belt and an apology for arresting him earlier. She thanks him for trying to protect Jimmy and Leo says he did it because Jimmy shouldn't have got in trouble for trying to make a romantic gesture.
AMY: I shouldn't have come down so hard on you. I suppose I get a little passionate about things.
LEO: It's one of the things I like about you.
Then there's some weird, cheesy slow-motion action where Amy drills the shelf into place for him before sauntering away with a grin.
Number 26
Xanthe finds Jimmy weeding the garden in the backyard (or just pulling out random vegetables and flowers, the kid's got no clue). Turns out his punishment is to get rid of all the weeds in Ramsay Street, so you've been warned Brad. Xanthe says what Jimmy did was very flattering but he's knows she's with Ben - plus she thinks of Jimmy like a little brother. Jimmy watches Xanthe walk away with a sad look on his face and Amy brings him a drink, asking him if he's OK.
JIMMY: It's hard when you like them and they don't like you back.
He tells his mum that Leo's a cool guy, he was wrong about him, and that Leo thinks she's amazing. Amy takes this news in with a hint of a smile.
Number 28
Terese is at the Kennedy/Canning BBQ, because why not. She's also there to apologise to Gary for temporarily suspending him. Terese says she should have defended him more and that he's a good man. Gary gives her a faint smile and says that he tries. Susan, Sheila and Karl join them at the table with the BBQ meat and salad and Karl and Gary get into a back-and-forth about cooking styles and techniques.
SHEILA: You should listen to Gary because the Canning men really know their sausages.
TERESE: You know what, I have to agree. I have had a lot of sausages in my time, but Gary's... wow. Just takes it to a whole other level.
SUSAN: Oh well then you need to try Karl's he's been perfecting his for years.
TERESE: I mean look, admittedly I've only tried Gary's sausage once...
(insert record scratch sound effect here)
TERESE: ... For breakfast!
Gary says they should follow up this lunch with one at his place next week so they can compare their sausages. Of the barbecue variety, behave would you.
Number 24/Harold's Café/Ramsay Street
Elly pops over after a text from Mark only to find him nice and drunk. She says she's worried about him but Mark's like, 'dude I am fine and alright and chill and mega-OK and not sad at all even though this beer bottle is filled with my tears'.
Meanwhile, Steph chats to Lauren in the kitchen about the break-up. She says the cracks started to show in their relationship when talk turned to marriage and kids, but Mark didn't want to see it. Lauren asks if she regrets pulling back from the baby but Steph says she's made the right choice. It would have been worse to live a lie because the baby needs a stable home.
Mark plays around with Steph's engagement ring and says he never should have bought it; there were way too many signs things weren't going to work out between them. He tells Elly that Steph broke his heart.
Steph says she isn't proud about hurting Mark but she's frustrated that he doesn't want to hear her out, and that she's sorry. Lauren says that Mark might change his mind in time but Steph thinks the best solution is to go and see Mark right now.
Mark says he's going to throw the ring in the bin, or the lake (come on, bro, save it for your next engagement in five months time), but Elly's like, 'dude you're not the old lady from Titanic throwing away her necklace, gimme that thing for safekeeping'. She tells him he's had enough to drink and that it's naptime now, directing his drunken butt towards his bedroom.
Elly tucks Mark up in bed, just as Steph appears at the open front door looking for him. She warily eyes all of the empty beer bottles on the bench, but her mood quickly changes when Elly emerges from the hallway. Steph zeroes in on the ring Elly's holding and scoffs at her all, "you sure as hell don't waste time do you?" Elly tries to explain that it's not what Steph thinks but Steph just leaves in a foul mood, slamming the door.
Outside the slow motion makes a reappearance as Steph angrily kicks over an innocent recycling bin. Ned sees her and approaches with caution, lest he be kicked in slow motion too.
NED: Have you seen Elly? She's not at home.
STEPH: You'll find her in Mark's bedroom actually wearing my engagement ring. Good luck with that.
Steph hops on her motorbike leaving Ned staring at Number 24 like, 'damn I know that Brennan kid loves collecting fiancées but this is crazy even for him'.
