Note: I am privileged to summarise for the 30th anniversary of the show in the UK - and for the the occasion they have put some "Union Jack items" in the episode.
Previously
- Karl tells Lauren the tattoo hasn't made Brad sick.
- David suggests to Karl that they put Brad on dialysis while Nurse Eve listens in.
- Simone introduces herself as Jack's childhood sweetheart.
- Jack says he needs time to process it, and Paige tells him to get out.
- Simone tells Paige to accept it's never going to happen. (If only)
- David is assaulted by Bradley, who may be his father
- At the hospital, David tells Bradley he may be his and Leo's father, and later they find that he has run off, leaving the room in a mess.
Hospital
Leo starts clearing up the mess. David checks to see if he can find him in the corridors, but no luck. Leo advises him not to risk his residency, which he could lose if someone finds out.
DAVID: I can get another job, Leo, but we've only got one dad.
David wants them to go and look for him, saying he might need treatment. Leo angrily refuses.
LEO: I'm not letting you lose everything you've worked for on some random who may or may not be our loser father.
He stomps out... and credits roll.
Waterhole
David wanders in looking for Leo. Paige says she hasn't seen him. Jack comes in with Simone, talking about past times. Mark goes over to Paige, and offers to "move them along". She says it's fine - she just wants Jack to be happy.
Ramsay Street
Aaron goes to pick up the paper. He waves to Paige and Lauren, who are off to see Brad with some wedding planning magazines. Terese comes over, saying she assumes Brad must be getting better. Lauren hopes he'll be home by the end of the week.
David asks Amy if she's seen Leo. She says not since he was late for their date. He tells her it wasn't Leo's fault, and he's really worried about him.
Power Street Bric a brac
Leo is putting up posters for a Melbourne Cup event. He asks her to put up some brackets, and she tells him David is worried. She asks if he wants to talk about it, but he says he's forgotten the guy already.
Hospital - Brad's room
David tells Brad he's not responding to dialysis as well as he hoped. He wants to take a biopsy... Lauren and Paige arrive, and Brad tells them David is just being thorough. Lauren and Paige say that everything is under control. Brad says he was supposed to supervising a "tertiary application class". He asks Paige to fill in, on the grounds that she got into Uni. After they have gone, he picks up his phone, and finds Terese in his contacts.
Lassiter's reception
Terese is not impressed with Leo's menu, and tells him to rework it. She gets a call from Brad, and leaves straightaway. David arrives, annoyed because Leo didn't text him back. Leo, meanwhile, is annoyed that David told Amy about their father.
LEO: Is there anyone else you've told our less-than-awesome origin story?
David says he would like to talk about family stuff, even if Leo doesn't. Leo agrees to talk, if David agrees to keep it private. He agrees, but says he needs to come this afternoon to meet Bradley's ex-wife.
Blaze
Simone and Jack bring some chairs in for the Halloween dance, and they chat about a previous Halloween. Paige arrives for her (or Brad's) class. Jack asks about Brad, and she says they are trying to stay positive. He and Simone leave.
Hospital - Brad's room
Toadie tells Brad he will sort out the paperwork. Brad thanks him, and they shake hands. Toadie leaves, and Terese arrives. Brad tells her that he's finalised his well. She thinks it's a bit Unmissably Dramatic™.
BRAD: Terese... I'm getting worse... and they have no idea what is happening to me.
He says the doctors are doing their best, but he has to be practical.
BRAD: Should my condition deteriorate, I need you to ensure that a weekly payment continues to be processed from my bank account.
TERESE: Can't Lauren do this?
BRAD: Lauren doesn't know about this... and it needs to stay that way.
Blaze
Paige talks to a reluctant applicant:
PAIGE: Have you ever been to a campus?
NICK: ...
PAIGE: OK, well I have...and let me tell you, it is full of hot girls! Tell me you're not interested in that.
NICK: (smirks)
PAIGE: Now imagine being in a class with all those hot girls, training to do something that actually earns you stacks of cash. Legally.
NICK: You can't make me.
PAIGE: Right. I forgot. You want to spend the rest of your life hanging out with your loser gang mates, don't you?
Nick starts writing, and Paige gives him a few suggestions. Simone comes back to "lend a hand". She tries to talk to Nick, but Paige sends her to do some photocopying.
Hospital - Brad's room
Terese asks if Lauren knows that Ned's in trouble.
BRAD: Ned's my son, he's my problem. I don't want her being dragged into it.
TERESE: So it's OK to drag me into it.
She says she knows he feels guilty about Ned, but he can't make up for it like this.
BRAD: I would do this for any of my kids. And so would you. Can I count on you? Please?
Terese asks if Lauren knows he's settling his affairs, saying that Lauren thinks he's getting better. Brad doesn't want to worry her while she's still recovering.
Waterhole
Lara says she was married to Bradley for 7 years, although he was chasing woman during the marriage. David asks if any of the women got pregnant, and she says they could have done. She tells them he was very charming and successful.
LEO: What happened?
DAVID: What my brother means is that Bradley doesn't seem very stable. Does he have any history of mental illness?
LARA: Just drinking.
She's upset. Leo asks her why he threw it all away, and she says he wasn't as together as he made out. Leo looks a bit shaken, but tells David it was just unexpected. David leaves and Leo looks pensive.
No 28
David admits to Karl that he admitted Bradley outside the system, and that he's been paranoid about someone else finding out. Karl asks if he's sure nobody saw him.
KARL: I think we both know there are some nurses on staff who like to make examples out of doctors.
DAVID: Have you worked out why Eve has it in for you?
KARL: No, but at least being on leave, she can't sling any more mud at me before the inquest hearing.
David promises to come forward. He tells Karl that Bradley was a long way from what his mother led him to believe his father would be like.
Lassiter's complex
Leo is working outside. Amy apologises for earlier. He tells about meeting his "maybe-father"'s ex-wife...
LEO: ...and she pretty much described him as shallow and untrustworthy, the same words Hiibaachan and Mum use to describe me. No wonder David's the favourite. I remind them of my scumbag father.
Amy tells him he's "not that bad", because he clearly loves his brother.
AMY: And it takes courage to go looking for answers... Not all children turn out like their parents.
She invites him for a drink, but he says he has to figure things out alone.
Blaze
Simone is playing a videogame on her phone, while Paige is telling Nick that his application is really good. He's distracted and wants to know what game it is. Simone tells him he can have a go, but Paige tells him to carry on. Then she tells Simone that she can go (since she's done the photocopying).
SIMONE: Do you mind if I just finish this level?
(Paige does, and snatches the phone.)
SIMONE: What is your problem?
PAIGE: You are. You said that you were going to come here and help, and you're just distracting the whole class.
SIMONE: Well, if that's the way you feel, I'll leave.
PAIGE: Great, I didn't want you here in the first place.
Jack comes in just at the end of the conversation and wants to know what's happening. Simone says she doesn't know why Paige is upset. Paige tells her not to play dumb, and tells Jack that Simone has been "like a useless idiot". Simone goes off, pretending to be upset, and Jack turns on Paige. She's annoyed, telling him he wasn't there. He says that he knows things are difficult, but she must take things out on Simone.
Harold's
Amy tells Aaron she finally saw the "real Leo". He's going through a difficult time and needs help. He groans and asks if the help is coming from her. She says she could be there as a friend.
AARON: He does not want to be friends with you. I can be certain of that.
He says that Leo will disappoint her or hurt her or both.
AARON: You know, we had it right when we decided to steer clear of the Tanakas. Amy...?
AMY: Fine. You're right. From now on... no more Tanakas.
Waterhole
Lauren bumps into Terese, and asks if she's going to see Brad this evening. Terese says she's already been. Lauren says he's doing well... but when Terese doesn't react, Lauren asks what's wrong and Terese tells her that he was finalising his will.
Lassiter's car park
Simone is in Amy's ute. Her phone rings - it's Jack. She throws the phone on the seat, then she tries to hotwire the car. Mark knocks on the window. She claims she's lost her keys, so she had to "be creative". Mark tells her he knows the owner of the vehicle, who looks nothing like her.
MARK: So, do you care to tell me what you're doing?
