Jimmy is resting up on the sofa following his discharge from hospital. Paul has brought him a sugar-free muffin to cheer him up. He complains that Amy isn't letting him watch TV, but she retorts that spending too much time staring at a screen is what caused his accident in the first place. Paul looks out of the window and sees Ryan getting out of a car. Amy suggests Jimmy read a book instead.

JIMMY: Oh, come on, Mum. No-one reads books anymore. And if they did, they'd read it on a tablet.

Jimmy leaves the room, and Paul and Amy watch as Ryan pashes Terese in the street outside.

AMY: She stayed out all night with him?

Paul doesn't look happy.

Terese comes in, greeting Madison and Piper with a chirpy 'morning!' She enthuses about how great her date with Ryan was. Madison is concerned.

MADISON: So you guys stayed up talking all night, and that was it?
PIPER: I really don't want to know the answer to that! So let's keep this G-rated and daughter-friendly.
MADISON: It's just really fast, that's all. And you don't really know anything about this guy.
TERESE: I know enough. And Madison, the older you get, the better you are at judging people's characters (...) And it's just nice to be wanted!
PIPER: Eurgh! Daughter-friendly!!
TERESE: Okay - it's just nice to trust a man again. How's that?
MADISON: And you really think Ryan's that guy?
TERESE: I dunno. But I certainly hope to find out.

Terese goes to bring in the washing. Piper complains to Madison that Tyler hasn't replied to her text about being able to take her to the formal. Madison suggests Piper talk to Tyler in person.

Jimmy is having breakfast, while Paul mouths off to Amy about Ryan, still not realising that she used to work for him. He starts telling her about the story he gave Madison about Ryan, and Amy hurries Jimmy out of the room to get dressed. Jimmy comes back for some clean clothes, and overhears Paul saying that Ryan used to hire girls to clean for people in their underwear.

JIMMY: I don't understand why anyone would do the cleaning in their underwear anyway?
AMY: No-one would, Jimmy!

But Paul keeps talking about it, and says he thinks there's more digging to be done on Ryan.

AMY: Why don't we let Terese make her own decisions? She is a grown woman!
PAUL: I'm gonna make a few calls.
AMY: Do you really need to get involved?!
PAUL: Hey! She thinks he's Prince Charming. Well, I reckon there's something about him. And I'm gonna find out what it is.

Xanthe comes in with her dress for the formal, in a clothes bag. She's very excited.

Harold's Café
Aaron and Tom are at a table, discussing plans for the refurbishment of the Rebecchi Law office. He's roping Tom into helping him, and also flirting a little. They leave, so Aaron can show Tom the office.

Piper comes in, and heads over to talk to Tyler, who's waiting at the counter. Tyler tries to avoid the subject by mentioning a podcast Piper recommended, but she gets straight to the point and asks if he got her text. He admits he did.

PIPER: Tyler, this is massive. Mum said we could go to the formal together!
TYLER: I don't think that's such a good idea.
PIPER: ... Are you serious?
TYLER: I dunno how you got your mum to change her mind. But it's complicated. I know it's harsh, but I think we should just leave it the way it is.

The Waterhole
Amy has met Ryan, and is begging him to stay away from Terese. Ryan says it's none of her business, but she explains that Paul, who she says is still in love with Terese, is determined to dig up dirt on Ryan. If he succeeds, Ryan's dodgy past will be exposed and Amy's secret will be blown too. Amy says she can't tell Paul to back off, without revealing to him why.

RYAN: I like Terese. This might actually be something, I dunno.
AMY: Oh, come on!
RYAN: If everyone just keeps their big mouth shut, everything'll be just fine.
AMY: How do you think Terese will feel when she learns how you used to make your money?
RYAN: I'll worry about that when I come to it.

Ryan tells Amy that she and Madison should just back off and mind their own business. He gets up and leaves.

Jimmy is begging Xanthe for a peek at her formal dress, but she says no-one's allowed to see it. However, when Ben turns up, she immediately rushes to show him the dress! Ben unzips the bag and is suitably impressed by the dress. Jimmy sees it too, and says Xanthe will look really nice.

XANTHE: I know! Perfect dress, perfect date, perfect night.
BEN: Hang on? Isn't that the $600 dress you wanted? I thought your dad couldn't afford it?

Gary and Sheila appear from the other room, having overheard - and demand to know where Xanthe got the dress! She's lost for words...

A few moments later, Xanthe tells them that she has only borrowed the dress, in exchange for giving the shop free publicity by posing in it on her Instagram account. Sheila isn't convinced, but Xanthe manages to talk them round.

XANTHE: It's a win-win for everybody!
BEN: Yeah, and the dress is totally hot!
GARY: ...
BEN: ... I mean, if she's hot in the marquee, she'll be well-ventilated!
GARY: ...
BEN: I should probably go!
GARY: Yeah, why don't you do that?

But Xanthe makes Ben stay and help her finalise their formal plans!

Piper comes in, and slumps on the sofa, depressed. Madison comes in to show off one of the new outfits she's bought for her new job at Lassiter's, but sees Piper has been crying over Tyler.

PIPER: He doesn't want to go to the formal.

Piper says she wouldn't normally be bothered, but it was about more than just the formal. Madison empathises by enthusing about her own formal, and how it was one of the most romantic moments of her life, with ex-boyfriend Logan. Piper doesn't understand why Tyler isn't bothered.

Ben is leaving, and he and Xanthe agree he'll pick her up at 4.30 for the formal, and to give her her surprise. Jimmy is sitting watching them grumpily, his arms folded, and suddenly coughs.

JIMMY (to Ben): I'd like to know a little more about your intentions.
BEN: ... I intend to tell you you're freaking me out a bit with those looks!
JIMMY: Alright. Just make sure you look after Xanthe.
BEN: I will. Don't you worry.
JIMMY: And no funny business, alright?
XANTHE: Very sweet, Jimmy.
JIMMY: And if it doesn't work out with him, you know where to find me.

Jimmy walks off to his room, leaving Ben and Xanthe bemused! Xanthe goes to get started on her fake tan, and before Ben goes, Gary accosts him. He tells Ben to make sure Xanthe has a good time tonight.

GARY: I know you're being paid to take her, but you make sure it's the night of her life.
BEN: Don't worry. I wanted to take her anyway.
GARY: Oh, now you tell me!
BEN: I'm gonna pay you back. I've got a job at the garage, so now just consider this a loan.
GARY: Loan or not, you still have to be on your best behaviour. Don't think you've got any room to move on that one.
BEN: You can trust me. I promise.
GARY: Good. I think we understand each other.

Ben leaves, and Gary smiles.

Amy has come over to ask Madison why she didn't run the story on Ryan. Madison claims she couldn't find anything on him.

AMY: You saw the pictures, didn't you? So you know what I used to do.
MADISON: Yes.
AMY: If Jimmy ever found out...
MADISON: Why do you think I killed the story? There's no way I was ever gonna put you through that.
AMY: So you lost your job because of me?
MADISON: It was the right thing to do.

They worry about Terese's burgeoning fling with Ryan, but don't know how to warn her off without risking her knowing about Amy's sexy maid gig. Plus there is Paul's interference to consider. Madison advocates just telling Terese the truth, but Amy insists no-one can find out about her past career.

AMY: I need to find a way to shut this down.

Rebecchi Law
Aaron and Tom are bringing in furnishings for Aaron's new position as Toadie's office assistant, including a giant exercise ball!

AARON: We don't want it to be a place we work. It's got to be somewhere we enjoy as well.
TOADIE: Aren't your legs going to get tired?
AARON: (...) The longer you sit, the quicker you die.

He gives the exercise ball to Toadie, who looks less than enthusiastic.

Amy comes in, and asks for a word with Tom. Amy tries to persuade Tom to use his position to stop Terese and Ryan from dating, since they're both his employees. She admits she's worried Paul will expose Ryan, and thus her secret. But Tom says it's not up to him to dictate to his staff about their relationships - there's nothing he can do.

The Waterhole
Madison is quizzing Tyler about why he doesn't want to take Piper to the formal. Tyler thinks Piper has pressured Terese into saying yes, and adds that it's all too complicated. Madison advocates not overthinking it, and says Tyler should take Piper to the formal if he wants to.

Harold's Café
Tyler comes in and finds Piper, who's still upset.

TYLER: I'm not trying to punish you. It's not about making you feel bad.
PIPER: Well, you're failing pretty badly in that case.
TYLER: I just wish you had've been straight with me, and your parents.
PIPER: Ty, how many times can I say sorry?
TYLER: Well, that's the thing - it doesn't change anything. I'm still the older guy who's going after their teenage daughter. I don't want your parents to think of me like that.
PIPER: Okay. I get it. I messed up. Can you just please stop rubbing it in my face, because you're only making it worse.
TYLER: You're not a bad person.
PIPER: So I'm just being punished for nothing?
TYLER: Pipes, I've been thinking. I really want to take you to the formal - if you still want me to. But I'm only gonna do that if I can speak to your mum, and have her blessing for real.

Piper enthusiastically agrees, and grabs him by the hand, rushing him towards the door so they can go and see Terese.

Terese is laying out to Tyler and Piper her conditions for their going to the formal together. Firstly, Brad will be bringing Piper home, not Tyler; secondly, it's a chance for 'two friends to spend some time together, and that's it'.

TERESE: Nothing more. Nothing else will come of it.
PIPER: Even if it's in the air?
TERESE: Piper!
TYLER: I hear you.
TERESE: Not so much as even a kiss. Yes? Are we on the same page?
TYLER: Absolutely.
PIPER: 100%.

Terese says Brad is in agreement - as long as they stick to these rules, they can go to the formal together. Piper hugs Terese, but she warns them not to let her down. Piper and Tyler hug excitedly.

Lassiter's Park
We get a time-lapse shot of the marquee for the school formal being constructed.

The Waterhole
Terese comes in and finds Ryan doing paperwork. They're flirting, and Ryan suggests he give her a call tonight to arrange their next date. She agrees. Paul watches the exchange from the background, and accosts Terese once she's parted from Ryan.

PAUL: Little word of warning. Lover-boy over there - just not worth it.
TERESE: You know, what I do and who I see has got nothing to do with you.
PAUL: Just trying to stop you from making a mistake.
TERESE: No, you're being petty and jealous. And I don't have time for this right now. Look, Ryan's a lovely man. And it's been a long time since I felt like this about somebody. I'm sorry if that'll be hard for you to hear.
PAUL: Well I guess you're just gonna have to find out the hard way, aren't you? Who you're getting involved with, and how they're making their money.

Terese looks rattled as Paul walks off.

Meanwhile, Gary is at the bar. He tells Sheila he's heading home to see Xanthe all dressed up for the formal. Sheila is still suspicious about Xanthe's claim that the shop loaned her the dress for free, but Gary tells her to stop thinking the worst.

Piper and Xanthe are squealing with excitement at the news that Tyler is taking Piper to the formal after all. Xanthe is concerned by the state of Piper's cuticles. Xanthe shows Piper her dress, but Piper sees the label, which says $600.

PIPER: So where did you get the money from?
XANTHE: ... Dad's cash jar. I tried to get the dress in exchange for a photo on Instagram, but they wouldn't go for it.
PIPER: Xanthe, he's gonna notice the money's missing.

But Xanthe explains her plan; she's going to wear the dress to the formal, then take it back for a refund the next day, claiming that it doesn't fit her.

PIPER: You're bad!
XANTHE: As long as I look stunning, I don't care.

The Waterhole
Aaron and Tom are having a post-work drink. The flirtation continues, as Aaron suggests that Tom give him a foot massage.

TOM: Was that just what I think it was?
AARON: Hopefully an attractive offer.
TOM: Are you sure?
AARON: Gee, I don't know. What part of our short, tragic history would make you think that?
TOM: Erm, probably all of it.
AARON: Hey. We're in the friend-zone at the moment, right? And I'm totally fine with that. But I'm okay if it's more. Even though there is that saying - when you do the same thing over and over again, and you expect a different result...
TOM: Apparently that's the definition of insanity.
AARON: I don't mind being a little crazy. Let's get out of here.

They leave, still flirting.

Terese is at a table, on her mobile phone.

TERESE: Look, I need you to do some checking up on someone for me... His name's Ryan Prescott... He's from Sydney, he owns a cleaning business... I need you to get anything you can get on him...

Terese comes in, and calls out for Piper, but she's not home. Piper's phone is on the table, however, and it bleeps as a message arrives. Terese looks at the phone - it's from Tyler, asking about the dress code for the formal. (The clue's in the name, Tyler.)

Terese keeps snooping on the phone, and eventually discovers Piper's special vlog that she recorded for Tyler. To which his response is 'WOW!!!' and a load of approving/lovestruck emojis. Looking around furtively, Terese decides to play the video.

PIPER (on the video): Hi. Welcome to a very special episode of Pipe Up, a private video for one person only. Hi, Tyler. I've been thinking about you all day, and I keep thinking about how much I like you. And I want you to know how-

Increasingly uncomfortable, Terese stops the video, and looks worried.
