No 28
Nate is staring at Aaron's phone, when Ben comes out of his room. He says he's treating Karl and Susan to takeaway and asks if Nate would prefer Indian or Thai.
NATE: Indian.
BEN: Are you sure? Think very carefully about this decision.
NATE: Fine, Thai.
BEN: Good choice.
As Ben leaves, another text message pops up on the phone from the Mystery Texter™. 'Leave 10 Grand at Old Well this afternoon.' Nate looks smug, as the titles roll.
The Handywoman™
Paige and John Doe are walking into the former Dial-A-Kyle yard. He explains how Iris, the staff member from the hotel who came forward with an alibi for him, can't meet up with him for a few days - he wanted to speak to her to see if she had any more clues to his identity.
Paige has brought John Doe to see Amy, to propose him as a new assistant for her at the yard. Paige extols his skills as a handyman, saying he's great with a power drill. But Amy seems a little put off by his amnesia!
AMY: Do you remember working a trade?
JOHN DOE: No.
AMY: Do you have any qualifications?
JOHN DOE: No.
AMY: Can you drive?
JOHN DOE: I can try - that seems to be how I figure out if I can.
AMY: Well, thanks for stopping by, but I think I'll be right.
But Paige begs Amy to give John Doe a break. So she asks if he can sweep, and he says yes. She tells him he can do a shift this afternoon, and 'see how we go'.
Robinson's Motel
In the storeroom, Steph is chastising a mopey Paul for not pulling his weight with the motel duties, and instead sitting staring at his tracking anklet. Paul snaps back at her, saying her boyfriend is trying to stitch him up for the boiler sabotage. Steph insists Mark isn't trying to stitch him up, but Paul says it's a vendetta against him.
STEPH: You are the main suspect in a murder investigation, Paul. What else is he supposed to do?
PAUL: He's never forgiven me for what happened to Kate.
STEPH: Oh, come on.
PAUL: Oh no, seriously - you should watch yourself with him... It's pretty obvious he's only with you to get to me.
Steph says that's nonsense, as they were together way before the explosion. But Paul asks how long it's been since she and Mark last hung out.
PAUL: I don't mean all the times he comes round here questioning me - that doesn't count.
STEPH: ...
PAUL: Oh, Steph, I'm not trying to be cruel here.
STEPH: Oh, really? Cos that's not how it's coming across.
PAUL: Come on, I am trying to protect you. Which is why you should know - Kate is the only woman that Mark's ever truly loved. I mean, Paige and Naomi - they were just distractions. Which is why their relationships disintegrated. So what do you honestly think is gonna happen to yours?
STEPH: I am trying my best to help you here. But I am not gonna let you sit here and screw up the business, while you make up conspiracy theories about my boyfriend. Just do some work.
No 28
Nate is telling Aaron that he's deduced Julie Quill wasn't the one sending the blackmail texts - although he still thinks she was acting weird. But he shows him the text about leaving the $10K at The Well™. Aaron says now they can contact Mark and have him catch the culprit.
But Nate reminds him that if they tell Mark, they'll have to tell him why Aaron's being blackmailed - for hitting Tom Quill and leaving him for dead prior to the explosion. If Julie finds out, Nate says, she won't stop until Aaron is behind bars.
Aaron's upset about having to deal with this on his own. Nate puts a hand on his shoulder, insisting that he isn't alone.
NATE: We'll get through this. Together. I promise.
He pulls Aaron close to him.
The Handywoman
A fraught Amy is on the phone to Jimmy, whose chess club has finished early. She's too busy to collect him, but promises to call Sheila to pick him up. She then takes a call from a customer asking whether her garden bed is ready yet. Amy promises it'll be with her soon.
John Doe has finished sweeping, so asks her what's next to do. She asks him to wash the ute. He offers to help with the garden bed since Amy appears to be struggling. But she takes umbrage at this, saying she can handle it.
AMY: Just wash the ute!
JOHN DOE: Got it.
Harold's Café
Steph comes in and meets Mark. She asks how things are going; he says Paul's under house arrest, which is a start! Steph says that's a bit harsh, but Mark's convinced Paul is responsible for the boiler sabotage, saying the police are sure of it. Steph tells him about Paul's theory that Mark has a vendetta against him because of Kate's death.
MARK: That's such an odd thing for Paul to think, and to say to you.
Mark reassures an unsure-looking Steph that she shouldn't feel uncomfortable about what Paul said about Kate - Mark's with Steph now.
STEPH: Just not that often, huh?
She complains that Mark's always working and never has time to spend with her. Mark says he's dedicated to his responsibility to finding out what happened with the explosion, and isn't going to neglect that. He has to get back to the station, but kisses her and says they'll speak later.
The Handywoman
A bloke called Gazza turns up, asking Amy if 'KC' (Kyle) is about. Eagle-eyed viewers will remember him as the shonky character from Episode 7236, who sold Aaron a truckload of likely-stolen fertiliser after Kyle and Amy turned down the offer. The fertiliser was then a major catalyst of the school fire.
AMY: What do you want, Gazza?
GAZZA: I've got this bloke who'll give us a good deal on some varnish.
AMY: Not interested.
GAZZA: Nah, it's cheap as.
AMY: Why, cos it fell off the back of a truck?
Gazza scowls and is about to wander off, promising to talk to 'KC' when he's next in. But Amy says this is her yard now.
GAZZA: KC gone back to his missus? He has, hasn't he!

John Doe, who has been listening in, intervenes, telling Gazza to give it a rest.
JOHN DOE: You have five seconds to get out of here, before I call the police about your cut-price varnish.
Gazza takes the hint and leaves, but an angry Amy has a go at John Doe, accusing him of taking over and being the 'big hero' because he thinks women can't handle themselves.
AMY: This is my business. And I do things my way. If you don't like it, you can go as well.
She tells John Doe to get back to cleaning the ute.
No 28
Nate and Aaron emerge from the bedroom, Aaron putting his watch back on.
NATE: Well, that felt like old times.
But Aaron looks despondent.
NATE: Sorry, did I do something wrong? Did you not want to...?
AARON: Yeah - no, I did. It's just - Nate, what are we doing?
Aaron says that what just happened was 'nice', and it's been good to reconnect with Nate again. But he reminds him that he disappeared on him for months, and cut him off completely.
AARON: Nate, you broke my heart. And maybe you can go straight back into pretending we're normal and nothing ever happened. But I don't work like that... It's just gonna take a while for me to learn to trust you again.
NATE: Okay. But I'm prepared to do whatever it takes to get you to trust me. I'm not leaving again. At least give me a chance.
Aaron seems to assent silently.
NATE: Thank you.
Another text comes through on Aaron's phone. The blackmailer wants the cash by 5pm, or they're going to the police. Aaron wonders where he'll get $10K from - but Nate has a plan.
The Handywoman
John Doe is still cleaning the ute. Steph comes by to see Amy, complimenting her on the new business name. Steph sees Amy's busy and offers to come back later, but Amy says she can spare five minutes. Steph repeats what Paul said to her about Mark's motives for being with her, and admits she's starting to wonder if Paul might be right. Amy advises that Steph should talk to Mark.
Steph thanks Amy for her wisdom, and leaves. Amy then sees what an amazing job John Doe has done cleaning the ute, and finally softens towards him, apologising to him for losing her temper with him before. She explains she's 'super-sensitive' at the moment, and is juggling too many balls, what with Jimmy and the break-up with Kyle.
AMY: It's taking everything for me to keep my head up. I have no idea why I'm telling you all this. Here I am, banging on about my love-life, and you've had this horrible accident.
JOHN DOE: Yeah, but I can't remember that, so it doesn't really count. That's the good thing about having no memory, is that I've got nothing really to say. I just listen.
AMY: What do you think about a bit more work?
JOHN DOE: I'd like that.
AMY: Noted.
They get to work on the garden bed for the customer.
Robinson's Motel
Steph is doing some admin in the One Motel Room™ when Mark arrives - she's summoned him urgently. Mark's itching to get back to work, but Steph convinces him to stay.
STEPH: I'm worried. I feel like there's a gap between us... It's all this Paul stuff. And I know we're on different sides of that, and I know that upsets you...
MARK: That doesn't upset me.
STEPH: Well I know you don't like it. Things aren't always as simple as good and bad, and yes, we're gonna disagree on that...
Mark isn't sure where any of this is coming from.
STEPH: If you're losing interest in me, or you're using me to get at Paul, then that's fine. But just tell me, because - I'm just gonna say it - I like you. I really like you.
Mark's still confused, so Steph explains that Paul said Mark was only still with her in order to gather evidence for the case against Paul.
MARK: Who cares what Paul says? He's not part of this relationship. The only thing that should matter is what I say. Now, when I say that I'm busy at work, it means that I'm busy at work. And when I say that I really like you, it means that I really like you. And I do. And one other thing. I am hopeless with picking up signals - I just, I miss them, okay? And if you think that there's a gap, then say there's a gap. Otherwise I'm not gonna pick up on it.
STEPH: There's a gap between us.
MARK: Then let's close it.
They kiss passionately, as Mark decides he can spare a few minutes before he goes back to work after all...
Harold's Café
Paige is on the phone, searching for potential rooms to rent for John Doe. But the one she's enquiring about has already gone. John Doe comes in, with Amy, who hangs behind. John Doe tells Paige that he thinks he's got himself a job, and she's delighted for him. He thanks Paige for setting it up for him.
Paige says she hasn't found a place for John Doe to live yet, but at that moment, Amy says that she's called Sheila, and that they're going to make some room for him at No 26. Sarah will be gone soon anyway, she says, and in the meantime Jimmy can stay in Amy's room, so that John Doe can have his room. She's also got him a cheap rent, on the proviso that he helps Sheila with chores.
Paige looks a little put out that Amy has stolen her thunder - and looks a bit left out when Amy and John Doe high-five, like they're suddenly best friends. John Doe invites Paige to come and help him settle in, but she says she has to work. Amy and John Doe leave Paige looking sour. Ben, who has been sitting at a table in the background, comes over to Paige.
BEN: I didn't know Amy had a new boyfriend?
PAIGE: She doesn't!
The Well™
Nate looks around furtively as he slides what we presume is an envelope of cash into the grate at the top of The Well™. Then he hides in the bushes with Aaron nearby, to wait for the blackmailer to arrive...
Robinson's Motel
Steph is lying on the bed in a bathrobe, while we can hear the sound of the shower from the bathroom. There's a knock at the door - Paul has brought Steph afternoon tea, by way of apology for not pulling his weight earlier. He quickly gathers from the shower noise and bathrobe that Mark and Steph have been canoodling.
STEPH: Let it go - it's fine. We're together. We're happy. Pull your head in.
PAUL: Oh. You know, I was only trying to help before?
STEPH: Yeah, I know. And I appreciate it. But I don't need it.
PAUL: Alright. Well, enjoy your scones.
STEPH: We will. Thanks.
But when Steph goes into the bathroom, Paul rushes to grab Mark's notebook from the table, to see if there are any clues as to the boiler investigation. The top note reads: 'Glen Darby - claims he saw Tom Quill threaten step-mother Julie Quill before explosion.' Glen Darby, viewers may know, is a Lassiter's staff member.
(Lower down the page, Mark also has a note to 'look into potential enemies of Citizen of the Year nominees', and something about the hospital and following up with witnesses.)
Having absorbed this new clue, Paul sneaks out of the room.
No 26
In the garden, Amy and John Doe are drinking beers in the spa. Amy's warning John Doe never to criticise Sheila's cooking!
AMY: If you don't like bacon, and she puts bacon on your plate - just suck it up and eat the bacon.
JOHN DOE: Maybe I'm a vegan!
AMY: Don't joke about it. Kyle put this tiny bit of salt on his casserole once, and she didn't feed him for a month.
JOHN DOE: You're joking, right?
AMY: I wish. She'd put an empty plate of food out every night, make him sit there while we all ate, and think about what he did.
JOHN DOE: He would've went hungry!
AMY: He did. He had to sneak out and get himself a pie. Don't risk it - you'll be homeless.
Paige appears, and tries not to look perturbed that they're hanging out in the hot tub together. She's brought John Doe an odd present - a pillow, so he can have a good night's sleep - since presumably Sheila doesn't have spare pillows?
PAIGE: Is there anything else that I can do?
JOHN DOE: No, I think I've taken up enough of your time.
PAIGE: It's really no problem.
JOHN DOE: I actually think I'm alright - aren't I?
AMY: Yeah, as long as you eat bacon!
They laugh, and Paige looks left out. John Doe thanks her for everything and Paige leaves - but looks back jealously as she goes.
The Well™
Nate and Aaron are still hiding in the bushes, waiting for the blackmailer to show up. Sure enough, a hooded figure appears, and walks towards The Well™, retrieving the envelope that Nate has left there. The figure opens the envelope, but realises it's stuffed with newspaper rather than real money. Aaron and Nate rush out of the bushes to confront him.
Nate goes to grab the figure, but gets winded for his troubles - so Aaron goes to grab the blackmailer instead. He soon sees who it is.
AARON: It's Tom Quill!
But Tom is already making a dash for it.
