Previously
- Ezra appoints Nate as trainee bar manager at The Waterhole, putting him in charge of Sheila
- When Clem acts distractedly in class after getting a text, Brad confiscates his phone
- Susan catches a concerned Brad going through Clem's phone to find out what's bothering him
- Following complaints from Ezra, Susan tells Brad she has no choice but suspend him
Harold's Store
Brad is telling Lauren about having been suspended by Susan. He realises now that he should have reported Clem's behaviour to Susan straight away, rather than getting involved himself; and admits he shouldn't have gone through Clem's phone.
Ezra arrives, all smug to find Brad hanging around Lauren again - before laying into Brad for snooping through Clem's private messages. Lauren weighs in to defend Brad, but Ezra quickly tells her to keep out of it.
BRAD: The fact is, Clem became agitated directly after reading that message.
EZRA: That's rubbish.
BRAD: It was from someone named Chloe. Does that mean anything to you?
Ezra suddenly looks rattled, and deadly serious.
EZRA: Keep away from my boy. Understood?
No 30
Toadie and Kyle are playing a football video game just as Sonya comes in, and decide to continue their competition with a table-football game at Off Air. Toadie explains he's given himself the afternoon off as he's finished all his casework, but with Nell at Judith the babysitter's, Sonya suggests they should spend the afternoon together. Toadie makes excuses, since he clearly has his heart set on going to Off Air with Kyle.
SONYA: Are you choosing foosball over your wife?
KYLE: ...
TOADIE: ...
SONYA: It's fine. Go. It's fine - I'll see what Georgia's doing.
But Kyle explains that Georgia is busy researching overseas cancer specialists to help her mum Rhonda. Toadie invites Sonya to come with them to Off Air, but she says she has plenty to do at home. She encourages a sheepish Toadie to leave, but looks annoyed when they've gone. On her phone, she opens the dating app, Ziva, then looks pensive...
The Waterhole
Georgia is doing her research at the bar. Nate serves her a coffee, but she whines that it doesn't have enough froth - he explains he's still learning how to use the machine. Meanwhile, Sheila is working on amending the roster to lower staff costs, as per Ezra's instructions. Nate says they'll have to work alternate shifts, despite Sheila's reluctance for him to work without her when he 'can't even froth milk'.
NATE: But don't take too long. We've got a lot of other jobs to get through today.
SHEILA: Yes, Sergeant Major, sir (!)
Once Nate's gone to see to the stock situation, Sheila explains to Georgia that she's been demoted, as part of an attempt by Ezra to push her out.
SHEILA: Don't worry, it'll take a stronger man than Ezra the Hun to rattle me.
With Nate back and Sheila out of earshot, Georgia asks him how his new job's going. He admits he's struggling to be Sheila's boss, since she doesn't see it that way. Georgia says that the trick is to find a way to make Sheila feel like she's in charge...
Harold's Store
When Susan comes in for a coffee, Lauren can't resist bringing up the situation with Brad and Clem, and challenges Susan's decision to suspend him. Susan insists she can't talk to Lauren about it, but says she has to put her students first, given that Ezra has challenged Brad's position. Lauren explains how she saw Clem being rude to Brad in front of Ezra, and how Ezra just laughed. Susan says the Hanleys have denied this, but Lauren tells her the situation is worth looking at more closely.
The Waterhole
Ezra is on the phone, presumably to Clem.
EZRA: Why were you texting Chloe? I thought we discussed this.
Susan comes in, and Ezra sees her.
EZRA: Hang in there, buddy. We'll talk about this when I come home.
He hangs up, and shakes hands with Susan, who's asked to meet him. She promises to get to the bottom of the situation with Clem and Brad.
EZRA: I know you've probably heard things about me, but they're not true.
SUSAN: I'm only concerned with Clem's welfare.
EZRA: Me too. And the truth is, I know I haven't always been the best father to him. I wasn't around for a lot of his childhood.
SUSAN: I see.
EZRA: That's why I moved here. To give Clem a fresh start, and the chance for us to rebuild our relationship. But no sooner did we get here, and this starts. It's obvious that Brad's not happy with the situation, and he's taking it out on Clem.
Susan suggests a mediation between Ezra, Brad and Clem, but Ezra says he's already tried to extend an olive branch to Brad, and that he refused. Susan seems sceptical about this - but Ezra says that as long as Brad remains at Erinsborough High, Clem will suffer, and that he plans to move him to Eden Hills as soon a spot opens.
Lassiter's Complex
Sonya meets a woman called Clara outside The Waterhole. It's clearly an arranged meeting, but they haven't met before - and both of them are friendly, but nervous.
SONYA: I almost feel like we're on a first date! I haven't really done anything like this before.
Georgia passes by, while talking on the phone to her dad, Patto, and notices Sonya sitting talking to the stranger.
The Waterhole
Nate is enacting his plan to make Sheila feel like the boss again. He summons her to talk about Ezra's list of jobs that need doing, and asks for her opinion on which jobs should be given priority.
SHEILA: Why ask me? I'm just the lowly dogsbody.
NATE: Yes - technically, Ezra put me in charge. But we both know what the reality is.
SHEILA: Which is?
NATE: Since I took over...
SHEILA: Since you started training, you mean...
NATE: Yes, but the point is, service has been suffering. And customers are unhappy.
SHEILA: Really? (!)
NATE: And you're the person who knows how this place runs. So it would be good to have your input, you know - on what you think should be done.
Sheila doesn't waste time in spouting off a reel of items that need addressing - while Nate scribbles down notes of what she's saying.
No 22
Brad is lifting weights in the garden, when Lauren turns up with shopping bags. She says she wants to cook the Willises dinner, after all the family has done for her lately. Brad says she doesn't owe them anything, but she insists, and says it might help distract him from the Ezra/Clem situation.
Brad admits he hasn't told Terese (who is still in Canada with their daughter Piper) yet about his suspension - or about Josh possibly being the father of Amber's baby - as he doesn't want to ruin her holiday. Imogen isn't around either, but Brad says Josh will be home soon. Lauren says Paige is spending time with Tyler, and Amber is out with Daniel, so it will just be her, Brad and Josh for dinner.
Off Air
Toadie and Kyle are having a frantic game of table-football, which Toadie wins. Georgia comes in, so they stop for a break. Georgia mentions that she saw Sonya outside The Waterhole hanging out with a 'girlfriend', which surprises Toadie as he'd thought she was staying at home. He asks who the friend was, but Georgia says she didn't recognise her. Kyle and Toadie go back to their game.
The Waterhole
Ezra lays into Nate for not having delivered on the list of tasks he gave him, but Sheila intervenes - saying that she told Nate they had more important things to do than the items on the list.
EZRA: Maybe I didn't make myself clear. It's my orders I want you to follow, not hers. The whole reason I hired you was because I didn't want the place run in the same inept way as before. So if you can't manage your staff, this won't only be your first week. It'll be your last.
NATE: Understood.
Sonya comes in just as Susan is leaving. Susan apologises for not returning Sonya's calls - she's been flat out with work. Susan wants to catch up soon, but is just too busy at the moment. She bustles out, leaving Sonya looking disappointed.
No 22
Brad is laying the table for dinner, while Lauren looks pensive. When Brad asks what's wrong, she admits that seeing the barbecue has reminded of Matt - because he always used to do the barbie. These little things keep upsetting her at random moments, she explains, such as her bike tyres going flat because Matt no longer checks the air once a week.
Brad gets a text from Josh - he won't be home till late, so it will just be the two of them for dinner. He says he'd understand if Lauren would prefer to eat at home, but she says they may as well keep each other company. Brad pours them some wine, and Lauren admits she couldn't face another night alone at No 32, which was why she came round in the first place.
As Lauren goes to fetch some plates, Brad gets another text - this time from Terese. It says: 'How are things going at home? Miss you. X' He replies without reference to Lauren being there, saying: 'Good just having a quiet night in. Miss you too. I'll call you later X'. He puts his phone away, looking worried.
No 30
Toadie comes in, calling for Sonya. She comes out of the bathroom in her dressing gown, and Toadie asks what she's been up to today.
SONYA: Erm, not a lot.
TOADIE: You just hung out here?
SONYA: Yeah, pretty much. Oh, I did go to The Waterhole for a bite, so...
TOADIE: Oh, good for you. Did you run into anyone?
SONYA: Yeah, I saw Susan...
But Sonya doesn't mention her meeting with Clara. They move onto a conversation about Toadie and Kyle's table-football game, but it quickly dries up. After a brief awkward silence, Sonya says she's tired, and heads to bed. Toadie tells her to sleep well, but looks confused once she's gone.
No 22
Lauren and Brad have finished dinner. Brad suggests opening another bottle of wine, but Lauren says she needs to get going. As they head to the kitchen, Lauren sees Josh's photo album from his time together with Amber. She reflects on how strange it is that they might be having a child together.
A little later, Lauren and Brad have opened another bottle of wine after all, and they look through the photo album together. Brad wonders how he'd have reacted at Josh and Amber's age had he known he was having a baby.
LAUREN: Yes, but you didn't get the chance, did you?
Lauren asks how Josh is handling it; Brad admits Josh wants to be the father, but doesn't think it's about coming between Daniel and Amber for him.
BRAD: And if this child turns out to be his, I don't want history to repeat. I want him to be a part of this baby's life.
A bit later still, Brad and Lauren are now lying close together on the couch, still drinking wine.
LAUREN: I know I've said this before, but you have to know I wanted to tell you I was pregnant. There were so many times I wanted to pick up the phone and just call you.
BRAD: I know things were complicated.
LAUREN: Complications that brought us Paige.
BRAD: Hmm.
LAUREN: You know, for all the pain at the time, it really did turn out for the best.
BRAD: I think things will work out for Amber and Josh too.
LAUREN: Do you really think they can make a go of it? Being parents together?
BRAD: Yeah, I do. Which means we're gonna be grandparents. Here's to Nana Turner and Grandpa Willis.
They touch glasses.
The Waterhole
Nate announces to Sheila that he's going to quit his job, as he'll never make both her and Ezra happy. But Sheila tells him he can't quit on her, insisting that Ezra's the problem, not Nate.
SHEILA: When you signed up for the military, do you think they'd have taken you if they'd known you were a quitter?
NATE: No.
SHEILA: Well, you're not quitting on me. We are gonna fight this.
NATE: We?!
SHEILA: Yes. We are gonna fight Ezra on this ridiculous working arrangement. He's only doing it to see me grovel, and the joke is on him.
Sheila passes Nate a piece of paper, listing all Ezra's ideas for revamping The Waterhole to bring in a younger clientele, in order to compete with Off Air. Nate agrees with Sheila that they need to concentrate on securing the patrons they already have - so they agree to fight Ezra's plans as a team, and shake on it.
No 30
Toadie is having a bedtime cuppa when he sees a text message appear on Sonya's phone, from Clara and headed 'Ziva Dating'. It says 'Had fun meeting you - lets do it again soon.' Toadie looks confused.
No 22
Lauren and Brad have both fallen asleep on the sofa, Lauren resting her head on Brad's shoulder. Terese is calling Brad's mobile, but neither of them wake up.
The following morning, Lauren awakes, still with Brad on the sofa. Trying not to wake him, she grabs her bag and creeps out of the house.
Ramsay Street
Susan is collecting the mail, and sees Lauren leave No 22, hurriedly trying to get her shoes on as she walks down the drive. Lauren sees Susan watching, and waves at her sheepishly. Susan waves back, but looks suspicious.
Unmissable Drama
- Susan asks Brad if he's going to tell Terese something
- Lauren tells Susan to butt out, saying she has no idea what it's like to lose a husband
- Flirtation and water- fights with Paige and Tyler
