The Bush
Amber, Mason and Imogen rush to the base of the cliff where Josh lies unconscious; Amber screams at him to wake up. Josh is breathing, and suddenly comes around - but it appears he's in severe pain from landing on his back. Imogen tries to call an ambulance but there's no mobile reception. She goes to try and get a signal, while Mason runs back to the campsite for help.
As Mason runs in slow motion through the bush, Amber tries to get Josh to stay awake, but his consciousness is drifting again. His eyelids close, despite Amber's begging. Imogen returns, having been unable to get a signal, and joins the chorus of screaming for Josh to wake up.
The Campsite
Mason arrives back at the campsite - and who should he encounter dragging a canoe out of the lake but everyone's favourite ex-detective!
MASON: Brennan? What are you doing here?
We might ask the very same question - but there's no time for chat, or even for anyone to remove their shirt - as Mason frantically explains Josh's plight. Happily, Brennan just so happens to have a satellite phone on him, and he grabs it from his bag before following Mason back into the bush. In slow-motion, of course.
Lassiter's
Back in civilisation, Brad arrives at the hotel and tells Terese he would like to book a room for him and his wife! They flirtatiously talk about one another in the third person as Brad tries his utmost to tempt her upstairs. Terese checks to see if there are any vacancies.
The Bush
Josh regains consciousness again, just as Mason and Brennan arrive back at the accident site. They've called for help and there's a chopper on its way. Brennan asks Josh what his name is, and what day it is, which he answers successfully - but he's in a lot of pain, and is struggling to move his arm. Brennan tells him to stay still, as the helicopter appears overhead.
Lassiter's
Brad and Terese are just beginning to ravage each other (in the middle of reception) when there's an incoming call from Imogen's mobile. In fact it's Amber ringing, and she tells them the bad news about Josh.
Erinsborough Hospital
Brad and Terese have already arrived as Josh is wheeled in on a stretcher. Karl is on hand to explain that he's injured his back and neck, but that they need to do x-rays and scans to determine the extent. Josh is wheeled into an examination room.
Harold's Store
Lauren takes a call from Amber, updating her on the situation with Josh. Kate, who is randomly loitering about, asks how Amber is, and learns from Lauren that Mason was out abseiling too. Kate asks Lauren if she knows who it was that helped them, but Lauren replies that it was just 'some guy'. Lauren is planning on heading to the hospital when Margie arrives to take over her shift, and Kate offers to go with her - but Lauren says it might be best for Kate to wait till later, as there will be lots of people there hanging around.
Erinsborough Hospital
Imogen, Amber and Mason rush in, but Brad has no news about Josh yet. Brad wants to know what on earth happened in the bush, and why Josh was abseiling in the first place. Imogen says she and Mason were doing it too, and Brad demands to know whose idea it was. Mason admits it was his idea, and Brad lays into him, demanding to know what he was thinking. Brennan, who is still lingering around, intervenes, saying it was an accident and not Mason's fault. But in doing so he reveals that nobody was supervising the session except Mason, who has abseiled before.
BRAD: So this is your fault?
MASON: I'm sorry, Brad. I didn't mean for this to happen. I'm sorry.
BRAD: Well it's a bit late for that now, isn't it?
Later, a conversation between Mason and Brennan reminds viewers that Brennan used to run an abseiling school in the Blue Mountains (because that's the kind of rugged all-rounder he is). Mason is desperate to know how Josh could have suddenly fallen like that. He claims he knows how to set up a rig, though admits he's never been an instructor, and that he and Josh were arguing a little prior to the accident.
MASON: I'm in a bit of trouble, aren't I?
BRENNAN: ...
MASON: Brennan, come on, you used to be a cop. Level with me - how serious is it?
BRENNAN: It's really not for me to say, mate. And I don't want to get involved. I'm just sticking around to make sure Josh is okay.
MASON: What - you're not even sticking around to catch up with Kate?
BRENNAN: No, I don't see much point.
Having thus presented us with a rundown of Brennan's career so far (cop, abseiling wizard, Kate's ex), Mason admits to Brennan that his own relationship with Kate never recovered after the last time Brennan was in town. Mason goes to see if there's any news on Josh.
No 26
Kyle tells Sheila about a call he's just received from Chris, revealing that Georgia has checked herself out of the hospital (the examination room evidently being needed for the more pressing matter of Josh's injury!) Kyle laments to Sheila that Georgia won't let him be there for her, and didn't even tell him she was pregnant.
KYLE: Look, how can she be like this? She knows exactly what I went through with Dad - he wasn't around, and I hated it. I don't want to be like him. I want to do things right from the start, and that means being there for everything. But if she keeps pushing me away like this, I'm gonna miss it all.
Sheila tells Kyle that Georgia knows deep down he'll be a great dad, but that at the moment she's just protecting herself from being hurt, given Kyle is moving on with Kate. Kyle admits he's been meaning to break up with Kate, as they'll never be more than friends.
KYLE: I love Georgia. She's the only one I want to be with.
Sheila tells Kyle that Kate deserves to know how he feels.
Paul's Penthouse
Paul feigns interest in the plight of the Willises, but really he's just worried about how Terese's assistant will cope with the additional workload if she's not around. Kate dryly promises to pass on Paul's regards when she goes to the hospital later to lend her support. Conversation moves to Kyle: Kate admits that he's been busy lately.
PAUL: Doing what?
KATE: I dunno.
PAUL: ...
KATE: Don't look at me like that.
PAUL: Like what?
KATE: With pity in your eyes.
PAUL: No, this is concern.
But at that moment, Kate gets a message from Kyle, saying he wants to meet, and she's all happy again, despite Paul's scepticism. She decides to ask Kyle to meet her here, deciding her hospital visit can wait.
Erinsborough Hospital
Terese and Brad are at Josh's bedside when Amber comes in, asking if she can come in. Terese suggests later, but Josh tells Amber to stay. Karl arrives soon after with the results of the scans: Josh is suffering from mild concussion, and a fractured thoracic vertebra, but it won't affect his spinal cord. He also has a broken arm and a tear in his shoulder, which will require internal fixation surgery to repair.
BRAD: And will he be able to swim competitively?
KARL: That's difficult to know until after the surgery.
Karl says there's an orthopaedic surgeon on staff who could operate in hours, but Brad insists that they need a proper sports surgeon to repair the damage. Karl warns this could take quite a while, and Terese is keen on getting Josh into surgery as soon as possible - but Josh agrees with Brad that they should wait for a sports surgeon, despite the pain he's in. Terese looks annoyed with Brad.
Paul's Penthouse
Kyle arrives to see Kate, and she proudly announces that they have the place to themselves. But he sombrely tells her to sit down.
KYLE: I really like you. I think you're great, and I'm not just saying that. But this - you know, you and me - it doesn't feel right.
KATE: Yeah, well we've had a pretty rough start.
Kyle says it shouldn't be this hard, and that although they have fun together, it's not really clicking for him. Kate says they haven't been together long enough to judge, but Kyle disagrees.
KATE: I think it's way too early to be making a decision like this.
KYLE: I'm sorry. But I don't. I'm in love with Georgia, and I always will be.
KATE: Right.
KYLE: I am so sorry, Kate. Look, you're such a great girl -
KATE: No, don't. I think you need to go.
Kate tears up as Kyle leaves.
Erinsborough Hospital
Lauren joins Amber, Imogen, Mason and Brennan in the waiting room, where Amber is blaming Mason for Josh's accident. Imogen defends Mason, but Amber insists Mason was egging Josh on.
Brad comes in - they're still waiting on news on the sports surgeon. He thanks Brennan for all his help, but when he learns Brennan used to run an abseiling school, he tries to probe him for information on what might have gone wrong. Brennan remains tight-lipped, and the others say they didn't see anything either. Imogen, Amber and Lauren go in to see Josh, and Brad invites Brennan to join them - but he says he has to go. Brad follows the others in to see Josh.
Before Brennan leaves, he asks Mason if he's sure he did everything right with the abseiling equipment.
MASON: Yeah. At least I think so.
BRENNAN: Yeah, well you'd better know so.
Paul's Penthouse
Kate reveals to Paul that Kyle has dumped her, and she's cursing herself for being such an idiot. Paul tries to comfort Kate, but she is adamant that her life is a complete mess. She decides to go to the hospital to take some flowers for Josh, but bursts into tears before she can leave the apartment - and cries on Paul's shoulder.
Erinsborough Hospital
Karl tells the Willises that the sports surgeon can't get here until tomorrow morning, which means Josh will be in pain overnight. Terese is unhappy about this, but Brad is adamant that waiting one night could save Josh's swimming career.
TERESE: No, but you're bullying him into it.
JOSH: No he's not.
BRAD: Are you sure?
JOSH: Yeah, I'm sure.
Terese and Brad go off to sign some forms, and Amber tells Josh she'd like to stay the night at the hospital. However, Josh suddenly goes off on one, and tells her he doesn't want her here.
JOSH: Just go!
Amber leaves, and Josh looks distressed.
Outside in the corridor, Brennan has returned to drop off Imogen's bag which she left in his car. He asks Imogen to pass his regards to Josh, and is about to leave - when of course Kate wanders in, with her bunch of flowers, and walks right into Brennan.
