Lucas comes in to talk to Vanessa about ideas for the lounge at No 32, but she's in a rush as she needs to get to Rhys's rehab session for his injured hand. They agree to catch up later. Sonya comes in; she doesn't believe Lucas when he says he's over Vanessa. Sonya questions whether it's really a good idea for Lucas and Vanessa to be living together, considering his feelings for her. He insists that he wants to live with his baby when it's born, and that he can handle his feelings for Vanessa.

Hand rehab expert Karl has poured some rice into a bowl, and is making Rhys move his hand around in it, with little effect. He then gets him to try squeezing a rubber ball, but Rhys struggles even to achieve that. Karl tells him not to give up, and says he's booked him in for a test in a couple of weeks to check his progress. When Vanessa comes in, Rhys gets frustrated and lashes out, saying he's done with rehab.
Later, Vanessa cooks minestrone to cheer Rhys up, but it's a struggle. She gives him some carrots to peel, which he appears to be managing, but she's forgotten the celery and rosemary, so heads back out to the shops.

Vanessa has got her celery, and apologises to Karl for Rhys's behaviour earlier. Karl prescribes gentle encouragement, and Vanessa tells him Rhys is back at home peeling carrots. Karl thinks this is ingenious. He tells her Rhys is lucky to have her support.

Done with the carrots, Rhys starts cutting up the lamb for Vanessa's recipe, but slips and drops the knife before hurling the entire piece of lamb onto the kitchen floor.

Lucas puts a picture of a car on the mantelpiece, and Vanessa comes in. Seeing it, she tells him off for turning the house into a 'man-cave', and unearths a load of brightly-coloured pictures which she suggests he put there instead. Vanessa leaves the house again.

When Vanessa walks in, Rhys is watching TV and won't even speak to her. She finds the lamb on the floor and Rhys tells her that her experiment was a waste of time, and to leave the rehab to him from now on.
VANESSA: Rhys, I was just trying to help you.
RHYS: And that's duly noted. See ya.
Vanessa grabs her bag and marches out, furious.

Kyle and Jade come in for coffee and muffins. Kyle's rambling on about what his new duties will be as the godfather of Sonya and Toadie's baby - but Jade, aware Sonya never said anything about Kyle being involved, warns him it's not a done deal yet. Jade tells Kyle that it probably wouldn't involve taking the kid to church, but would be more of a mentoring/advisory role. But she tells him not to worry about it until Sonya speaks to Toadie.
Lou comes in, and is shocked to learn Kyle may be the baby's godfather, as he says he's not really qualified. Lou brags that he's been godfather to Libby and Drew's son Ben for years, and that he was chosen because he has 'the genuine wisdom only age can bring'. Jade says Sonya and Toadie are looking for more youthful energy! Lou nominates himself as the perfect choice to be godfather to Lucas and Vanessa's child, which amuses Kyle and Jade.

When Vanessa comes home, Lucas has put her pictures on the mantelpiece as she suggested, and has also reserved a spot for a framed photo of the two of them with the crib. But she doesn't seem as delighted about it as he evidently imagined she might, because she spontaneously bursts into tears!
Vanessa tells Lucas she had an argument with Rhys, and Lucas says she can talk to him about it if she wants to. She doesn't want to lay all that on him, but thanks him for being in her corner and gives him a hug. At which point, Sonya bursts in and offers to help with the decorating. While Vanessa makes them tea, Lucas explains Vanessa was upset and needed his support.

Kyle comes in and moans to Rhys about the state of the kitchen. Rhys denies all knowledge, and tells Kyle to clean it up himself. He says he's fed up of being hassled and patronised, and storms out of the house.

Sonya lectures Lucas about his behaviour with Vanessa, warning him he can't start thinking he's in with a chance every time she argues with Rhys. Lucas tells Sonya he can handle it and tells her to butt out. When Vanessa comes back in, a flustered Sonya makes an excuse and leaves them to hang the rest of the pictures up.

Lou asks Karl's advice on being a godfather. He says all he's done for Ben is to send him birthday cards and speak to him on the telephone, as that's all Libby seemed to expect. Lou points out that since being a godparent is no longer all about religion, he can't quite understand what it is about. Karl suggests it's about offering guidance, support, and backup in an emergency, which seems to satisfy Lou.
Rhys is at the bar, drinking alone. Karl reminds him about the effects of alcohol on nerve regeneration, before warning him it's hard to come by the sort of support Vanessa is trying to provide him - and that he ought to think about whether he can afford to lose it.

Lucas and Vanessa admire their new décor. Vanessa admits she likes the framed photo of them, although Lucas thinks he needs a haircut. He suggests they start on the nursery, but a knock at the door interrupts them. Rhys has come round to apologise, while Lucas eavesdrops. Vanessa is unimpressed: she doesn't want to get mauled every time she tries to help Rhys. He explains he's not good with failure, and that surgery was all he ever wanted to do. He admits he's scared, and asks her not to give up on him. She says she won't, but that he needs to talk to her. He promises he'll try.

Rhys and Vanessa are back in the (tidied) kitchen, happily cooking dinner. They kiss, and Kyle and Jade come in: Kyle's got a new nickname for Rhys, 'Captain Happy Pants', following their row earlier! Jade and Kyle are invited to join them for dinner, and everyone is happy...

... except Lucas, who is sulking on the sofa at home. Lou comes in; he tells Lucas that he takes his responsibilities seriously, and starts shamelessly auditioning for the role of godfather to Vanessa's baby. Lucas says they haven't talked about godparents yet, but Lou advises him they ought to! Lucas isn't sure they need godparents at all, as they're quite old-fashioned. Lou won't let it rest, so Lucas snaps at him, telling him they're not up for it. Lou goes off in a mood.
Later, Sonya comes back to stick her beak in again. Lucas tells her she was right: Vanessa's made up with Rhys, and he was an idiot for thinking he had a chance with her. Sonya comforts him, but he says he can't do anything other than be the best dad possible to the baby. Sonya suggests he ask Vanessa to live somewhere else, but he doesn't want to end up being a weekend dad, and says he'll just have to deal with it.
