No. 28 - Night
Tash lingers outside the front door, as Karl prepares dinner inside and Summer lays the table, unaware of her presence. She plucks up the courage to knock and barges in with her suitcase. She explains that the removal men have come and gone, and the only furniture left in the house are her belongings.
TASH: So, which room's mine?
KARL: I'm sorry?
TASH: "If you ever need a place to stay..."
Karl and Summer quickly twig on and welcome her in. Tash hopes that dinner isn't too spicy (looks like Karl will have to cook something else!) and heads to the spare room. Karl and Summer reassure each other that the situation will only be temporary, when suddenly there is a loud crash from the bedroom, much to Karl's horror.
TASH: (from bedroom) You don't mind if I move this guitar do you?
Community Centre - The Following Day
Kyle and Jade regret a big night out as they get ready for Jade's class. Jade gets a call - it's Toadie. Charlotte, Toadie's boss, appears behind her.
CHARLOTTE: Just wondering where I should set up...
JADE: Just hang on a sec, do you see a spare mat? Yeh, that's probably your safest bet.
Jade gets off the phone and tells Kyle that Toadie's got a client who's interested in franchising the 'Singles Boot Camp'. Jade takes her name and is very pleased with the prospect - apparently she's meant to be visiting today. Jade begins the class.
JADE: Can I just get your name please?
CHARLOTTE: Charlotte McKemmie
JADE: Right! Er, it's nice to meet you, I'm Jade Mitchell
CHARLOTTE: Do you usually take this long to start these classes?
Jade looks embarrassed and jumps straight into pairing everybody up, and having realised who Charlotte was, looks annoyed with herself.
Vanessa hands Kate a dry- cleaned dress - she's got something special planned. Kate bumps into Sheila who's in the city again to visit a friend. Sheila advises Kate to get things off her chest and tell Kyle how she feels about him on their prize date from the Bachelor Auction.
Sophie comes to see if Kate can help her revise for a test - Kate wants to get ready, but Sophie insists she needs to study now. She notices Kate's preparations.
SOPHIE: Kate, this is your best dress! Why are you going to such a big effort for Kyle? Unless you like him..
KATE: Oh not this again.
SOPHIE: Come on, admit it, I'm right.
KATE: I just want to look nice for the occasion
SOPHIE: Yes, an occasion alone with Kyle! Are you planning to pull a move on him or something?
Kate insists it's just a lunch date between two friends. To prove it's nothing, Kate switches off her phone and ditches her plans to get ready, and the two start studying.
Summer walks in wearing a bathrobe which Tash remarks as screaming 'given up on life.' The two bicker about Tash using up her environmentally friendly shampoo.
Karl explains to Susan about the new living arrangements and Michael selling the house. Susan is in disbelief at what Michael did and feels sorry for Tash.
Summer is annoyed that Tash ate her lunch but dismisses the problem.
The class is in full swing - the couples are about to engage in boxing, but Charlotte wants to swap her partner, Nick. He tries to engage in a little light flirting but Charlotte is having none of it! They begin the boxing exercise, but within seconds Nick has somehow smacked her square in the jaw! Nick apologises profusely, and Jade runs over to see if she's okay.
CHARLOTTE: Jade, I know Jarrod's told you why I'm here, so I think I might sit the rest of the class out. I think I've seen enough.
Jade looks terribly disappointed and runs to get some ice.
Jade leads the class into the bar so the couples can mingle. Charlotte and Jade take a seat, and she explains how she structures the class.
JADE: Look, I'm so sorry about today, I've never had an injury in any of my classes.
CHARLOTTE: I find that hard to believe. Now as a lawyer I-
JADE: How about another class, free of charge!
CHARLOTTE: I'm not interested-
JADE: Charlotte, please! Just, please don't sue me.
CHARLOTTE: That's not why I'm here. Whilst your class isn't my thing, it's exactly what my clients might be interested in franchising.
Jade is lost for words! Charlotte wants to offer her a business deal.
Karl and Rhys return from a jog to an absolute tip (thanks to Tash!) and Summer looks pretty smug about it. Before Summer can list off all the things that Tash has done to annoy her, Karl reminds her that Tash is going through a very tough time. Summer reluctantly agrees. Rhys has found the book he was looking for and leaves.
TASH: How often does he come round? Wouldn't mind checking out some hot doctor action - oh don't worry Karl! You are so not the hot doctor material!
Karl and Summer exchange a glance as Tash makes herself at home with some chocolate on the sofa.
Kate and Sophie are mid- study session. Sophie glances at Kate's dress and her phone and is clearly distracted. She asks Kate why she's going on the date with Kyle, and why she picked him of all people.
KATE: You think I actually want to hurt Jade?
SOPHIE: I think you don't care anymore. No, it's just like you said. Nothing wrong with being selfish right? No matter what you think, it doesn't mean you can hurt other people. Just like what happened with Noah.
KATE: Sophie, that's completely different!
SOPHIE: How? Because Jade's your friend, and not your sister?
KATE: Because I never actually liked Noah!
Kate realises what she's said - she admits that she does like Kyle. Sophie reiterates that Kyle and Jade are happy together. She says she doesn't want to get back to hating Kate again and pleads Kate not to go through with it. Kate is left staring at her dress.
The pagoda is all dressed out for a fancy lunch date as waiter sets up. Kyle appears wearing a suit. They both complement each other and sit, and Kate takes Kyle's hand.
KATE: I don't really know how to say this, so I should probably just come out and say it. I'm in love with you. You're the one I want to be with, and I know that now. Look, I know you and Jade... but you had feelings for me once. If there's even the slightest chance...
Kyle gets up, and takes Kate's hand. The two passionately kiss....
Kate turns around to look at the dress again - the date was all in her imagination! She heads to her room with the dress.
Tash presents Karl with a list of household things that need to change and shampoos to be bought! Tash and Summer argue over the ecological impact of the products she's chosen and they agree to buy their own cosmetics. Tash turns to Karl and address his dress sense. Karl notices a phone message note that Tash left for him whilst he was out. He's upset that he now missed his appointment.
TASH: I'm sorry, I didn't think it was important.
KARL: No that's the problem, you don't think! Not when it involves other people.
TASH: Sorry.. I'm, I'm sorry.
Tash rushes out and Karl looks like he regrets what he said.
Tash walks into an empty house. She begins to cry, and Karl follows her in.
TASH: It's just a stupid house.
KARL: Tash, I'm sorry.
TASH: No don't be, I know I'm a pain to live with. That's probably why Summer didn't want to move in with me in the first place. I'll find somewhere else.
KARL: No. No you're staying with us. No matter how much of a pain you are to live with. I want you to stay.
Karl tempts Tash with lunch, and she takes one last look at the empty living room.
Sheila suggests that Kyle wears a suit. Jade rushes in and tells Kyle about Charlotte's proposition. Sheila congratulates her, and Jade explains that she has to go to Sydney straight away and invites Kyle along. Sheila reminds Kyle of his date with Kate, but Jade insists that she needs Kyle. He agrees to go and pack, and Sheila doesn't look best pleased!
Kate finishes doing her makeup and misses a call from Kyle.
Kyle tries to leave a voicemail but Sheila says he should speak to her in person. Jade tells Kyle they need to leave urgently.
SHEILA: You made a date with Kate. And Canning's don't go back on their word.
Sheila suggests that Kyle flies the next day, and tries to persuade him not to let her down.
The scene is set exactly as in Kate's imagination from earlier, although Kyle is very reluctant. Kate takes Kyle's hand.
KATE: Can I just get this out. Ok, I don't know how to say this, so I should probably just spit it out-
KYLE: Kate, I can't stay.
KYLE: I've got to cancel. Sorry. I tried calling but you didn't answer and I didn't just want to leave a message. Jade's about to fly to Sydney for a meeting, it's a long story but I've got to go with her.
Kate's confused, but Kyle explains that he's only dressed for business and he's got to get to the airport.
KATE: Fine, it was nothing, really.
KYLE: Another time yeh? Sorry you got dressed up and everything.
KATE: Don't worry about it, you should go, you've got a plane to catch.
KYLE: Thanks, call me when you get back?
Kyle makes a speedy exit, and leaves Kate looking heart- broken.
