No.28
Susan calls a taxi to take her home. Karl switches off The Right Prescription music.
KARL: It's a mystery to me that no record company ever picked it up.
SUSAN: Yeah...not really one of the *great* mysteries, though...(!)
Apparently the other guys used to call Susan "Yoko"(!).
KARL:(taking her hand) Thank you for today. I don't know if I would have got through it on my own.
SUSAN: You underestimate yourself.
KARL: And thank you for coming round tonight and letting me bore you with my woeful old music.
SUSAN: You've never bored me, Karl. That's one thing you've never done.
KARL: This is the point that you say, 'and your music really wasn't woeful'.
SUSAN: But it really was.
Karl laughs.
KARL: Kick a man when he's down!
The taxi arrives and they hug goodbye. Karl shuts the door behind her, sadly.
Hospital
Jessica comes to see Karl wtih a coffee.
KARL: Thank you for being so understanding about me bailing on your last night.
JESSICA: Figured you needed some time alone.
KARL: Yeah, just...to let things sink in.
JESSICA: It's not a problem.
They chat about their gallery trip tomorrow to see Monet pictures.
In the corridor, Aidan and Rhys observe Karl and Jessica talking. Rhys rolls his eyes.
Jessica comes over and asks tells Rhys he can take tomorrow off, as she'll be off too.
RHYS:(to Aidan) What was that?!
AIDAN: That's the power of love!
Harold's Store
Rhys comes in. He calls his mother on his mobile, and leaves a message that he'll come and take her out tomorrow. Aidan comes in and invites Rhys to a party tomorrow night. Rhys says he already has plans for a hot date. Kate overhears this. Rhys tells her that it's not worth the effort to crack on to Jade. Kate tells him to let the bet go.
No.26
Jade is dancing around the kitchen while cleaning up. She tells Kyle she's really looking forward to Aidan's party. Just then, Callum comes in with a bag and Kyle tells him to put it in his room. Jade is staggered to hear that Kyle has invited Callum to stay.
KYLE: This'll be way more fun than any party!
JADE: Have you met Callum?! (!)
(Later)
Kyle and Callum are playing Dragon Prophecies on the computer while Jade watches TV on her own(!) Kyle tells Jade to get involved in the game. She decides to go and do laundry instead(!)
Harold's Store
Susan and Paul are having a coffee when Jessica comes in. Susan asks her if she's seen Karl this morning. Jessica is surprised to hear that Susan was at the funeral. Susan inexplicably goes on to dig Karl in deeper by revealing that they spent the evening together, reminiscing.
Hospital
Jessica takes Karl into a room.
KARL: Is everything OK?
JESSICA: You tell me. You bailed on our dinner date last night to spend the night with Susan.
KARL: well, first of all, it wasn't the night...
JESSICA: No, it was apparently the day *and* the night!
KARL: Look, I was going to tell you, but...I thought you might read more into it than there actually was.
JESSICA: Which was...?
KARL: A shoulder to lean on. I was worried you might not understand.
JESSICA: Karl...I'm too old for this! I thought you were interested in a mature relationship.
KARL: I am!
JESSICA: I'm not interested in being a re-bound fling.
KARL: A fling?! You are more than...don't you think we have somethign a little more substantial.
JESSICA: We have fun.
KARL: We do.
JESSICA: And then, when something more serious happens, it's back to Susan!
KARL: This was a one-time thing, it was the death of a friend.
JESSICA: If Susan is still the shoulder you want to lean on...
KARL: Am I supposed to pretend that we're strangers?
JESSICA: No! My ex and I get on fine, you know, look, but we don't live in each other's pockets. Separated is separated. But you can't have her, *and* have me. It doesn't work that way.
She is clearly upset and walks out.
Harold's Store
Susan is still having coffee with Paul when Karl comes in. She goes over to talk to him and say she hopes she hasn't got him into trouble with Jessica. She apologises. She goes on to tell him that "Free As A River" has been stuck in her head all day, and they get reminiscing about the band again.
KARL: Was there anything about our band you actually liked?!
SUSAN: Well, I had quite a thing for the lead singer!
KARL: Pretty devastating, wasn't he. In a kind of unassuming sort of way.
SUSAN: How do you reckon he's coping today?
KARL: Pretty good, actually.
SUSAN: Good.
No.26
Kyle and Callum are still playing a game on the computer. Jade moans that Callum should get some exercise. Kyle suggests that they do "The Noodle Challenge". Callum is doubtful that he will enjoy it.
There follows a musical montage of Jade doing various exercises and Callum attempting to copy her, and mostly failing miserably. Next they have a fight with long rubber poles. Callum does enjoy it, despite himself!
Hospital
Karl calls Jessica into a room.
KARL: I thought about what you said. Jessica, you are an intelligent, attractive and terrific woman. And you deserve to be treated with a lot more honesty than i gave you, and I'm sorry for that.
JESSICA: Accepted.
KARL: I don't want to get of myself, but it's not impossible that we could have something.
JESSICA: It's not impossible at all.
KARL: I've had a very lucky life. I've been blessed with some wonderful friendships. One of those friendships is my ex-wife. And I'm not prepared to sacrifice that.
JESSICA: It sounds like you're trying to have a bet each way.
KARL: No, no, no, it's over.
JESSICA: Then don't you think it's time to move on?
KARL: But I am! When we've busted up before it's been ugly and destructive, it's much better this way.
JESSICA: Karl...since we're being honest with each other. you should probably know, I like you. I like us. But do I want to get into a relationship with a third wheel? Life's too short.
KARL: Well, I, uh...guess there's nothing left to say then. We have to stop seeing each other.
JESSICA: Well, that's a little difficult when we work together.
KARL: Jessica, I'm sure that...
JESSICA: Oh, Karl, please don't tell me we can still be friends. I'm not your wife.
She walks out, leaving Karl standing sadly on his own.
(Later)
Jessica gives Karl a form to sign. Aidan comes over and gives Karl a package from Susan - it's an old video of The Right Prescription in 1983. Jessica sees this and looks upset. She gives Karl his pen back.
KARL: You can keep it.
JESSICA: It's fine, I don't need it. Thanks.
Aidan is about to update Rhys on the gossip when Jessica marches over and tells Rhys he'll be working tomorrow after all - at 6am! He is not amused.
Charlie's
Rhys calls his mother to cancel their plans. Kate comes over to talk to him. They observe Kyle, Jade and Callum playing happy families at a table.
RHYS: You know what? Your dare. It's back on.
KATE: Rhys, don't do this.
RHYS: Why not? Perfect way to let off a bit of steam! I get to have a bit of fun with Jade and you get to do whatever you want with Kyle. It's a win-win situation. It's almost too easy.
KATE: Rhys, don't.
RHYS: You're actually powerless to stop me. Unless you want me to tell her about your infatuation with Kyle. Didn't think so.
He goes over to Jade.
RHYS: Having fun yet? I didn't think having babies was high on your agenda.
JADE: Since when was any of that your business?
RHYS: Just making an observation. You seem right at home playing happy families.
JADE: Yeah, we're just babysitting.
RHYS: Like a trial run? Smart idea, see if you're cut out for it. Still, looks like someone's ready for fatherhood.
He looks over at Kyle.
JADE: Rhys, you have no idea what you're talking about.
RHYS: I have a good instinct for these things. What do you reckon, Kate? Don't you reckon Kyle would make a great dad? Kind of like the Brad Pitt of Erinsborough.
Jade just walks off. Rhys giggles nastily to himself.
(Later)
Rhys is playing darts. Callum tells Kyle and Jade that he's had a great day and thinks they're awesome. Kyle and Callum decide to play pool. Jade says she's going to head home early. Rhys overhears this and smirks. Kate looks worried.
(Later)
Kate comes over to talk to Rhys.
KATE: Why are you doing this?
RHYS: Cos it's therapeutic. And, I'm really good at it!
KATE: I'm not talking about darts.
RHYS: I know.
KATE: Can you just drop it?
RHYS: Thought you'd be happy!
KATE: Jade's my friend!
RHYS: Oh, come on, don't be naive. What do you think Jade would do if she liked someone that *you* were with?
Kate doesn't know what to say.
RHYS: Exactly. You either play, or you get played. I know which I prefer.
KATE: This is going to come back to bite you one day.
RHYS: I sincerely doubt that. I should go. Don't look so worried, nothing's going to happen tonight! I need to give her a bit of time to think about what she wants(!) You know, she probably wants someone to talk to. Floor's all yours. Unless, of course, you want a game of pool?
Kate looks over at Kyle, who is playing pool.
