Number 28
Susan's listening to the radio in the morning when Karl comes out and switches it off. He turns it back on for her. They talk about Lou leaving, then Karl says he'll try and get back the annual leave he's just booked with the hospital. He's annoyed that Paul won't let Susan have the time off, but gets out his diary so they can agree some dates.
Susan's reticent: she needs to check with Paul first, and things are really busy at work. She asks to sort it out later and, despite Karl pushing, manages to get him to let it go. Karl invites her to lunch later, but Susan's just too busy...
Rhys Lawson's flat
Kate is trying to find evidence of the name of the man she just slept with last night. She has no idea. He appears in the doorway and offers her breakfast, but she declines, so he puts his number into her phone before leaving for work. He leaves the name 'unknown'.
After he goes, Kate continues to hunt for evidence of his name, and Lou calls her. She suddenly remembers Rhys' name, gather her shoes and bag and leaves.
Ramsay Street
Kate returns home, but runs into Paul, then Susan, then Jade. She's mortified. Jade can't believe that she's been out all night and invites her for coffee.
Number 26
Jade's pouring coffee for them, and can't believe that Kate forgot Rhys' name; she wonders if Kate will see him again. Kate emphatically says no. Her phone rings and rings, and eventually goes to message bank. Kate sees the missed call was from him, and she admits to Jade that she's a horrible person: she only used him to get over Mark.
Despite the fact that she agreed to have coffee, she now says she's late for work and quickly leaves.
Erinsborough Hospital
Susan leaves the hospital with Jim and they decide to go to lunch. Doctor Lawson runs into them and asks how Jim is. Jim says he knows Rhys doesn't approve of his decision, so Rhys cattily asks if he's made 'arrangements' yet. Jim is a bit shaken by the question.
Charlie's
Jim tells Susan that Rhys is right - he hasn't made arrangements for his death or the last few days of his life. He needs to figure out where to stay, what to do. Susan says they should speak to the Peter Macmillian people, and she can suggest a good lawyer.
Susan questions Jim about the time he does have left: what would he like to do with his time? He throws the question back at her, and she says she'd like to learn how to meditate, go rafting, plant a garden and go to Paris. Jim doesn't really know where to start, and Susan feels sorry for him.
Harold's Store
Jade is still teasing Kate about her night out, and the fact she's got a message from Rhys. Kate serves Karl and Mal coffee, and Karl introduces his son to her. Jade watches her, and then teases her about her flirtatious manner. She reminds her friend that it's good to let off steam with a guy, sometimes - but Kate doesn't want to be that person. She's just grateful she'll never have to see him again.
Outside, Kate is clearing tables when Rhys appears. He asks after her day, but as she leaves, she tells him to stop calling her and following her. Their relationship isn't going to work out, and she doesn't want to pick up guys and stay out all night. Rhys is rather surprised: he had no idea she worked here, she told him she was a student teacher. He just wants coffee, nothing more.
Lassiter's
Susan sits on a bench when Paul approaches and asks where his patient advocacy article is. She promises it will be with him soon, then asks what he'd do if he only had a few months to live. Cue music montage of Susan interviewing different people:
Paul says he'd buy a TV network and make sure Lassiter's was in safe hands, Christmas with all the family. Jade: nothing, hang out with the people she cares about. Mal: bungee jump, skydiving, all the risky stuff, spend time in Erinsborough with family.
Mal comments that his mum is getting pretty involved with Jim, and asks Karl what he'd do if he only had a few months to live. Karl says he'd spend time with family, that would be the important thing. Susan isn't impressed with his remark, taking it personally.
Charlie's
Susan presents all the ideas to Jim, and tells him that 'family' kept coming up. Jim says the only relatives he has are strangers, but he wouldn't mind checking out the house he grew up in when he was a child, down in Anglesea. Susan's happy to help him find out - more than happy.
Jim's also checked out hospices so he won't be alone when he dies, but Susan promises that he won't be alone. Jim's unsure about this - he doesn't want to be a burden, nor take her from her family, especially when her son's over from London.
Susan takes his hand and promises that whatever happens, she won't let him go through it alone.
SUSAN: I'll be there. I promise.
He puts his other hand on hers and thanks her.
Harold's Store
Kate tells Jade that she rates the overall experience with Rhys a D minus. She used him, made a fool out of herself, insulted him then had to make him coffee. Jade points out that he called her, he was friendly, and obviously likes her. Her theory about Kate has been confirmed.
KATE: What theory?
JADE: That you overthink everything.
KATE: No I don't! I analyse!
JADE: Oh, right. So were you 'analysing' when you went home with him last night and had a good time?
Kate walks off. Jade reminds her that it was only after she got home then started to think about it that she made all the mistakes. Next time, she should just enjoy herself and stop analysing.
Kate's phone rings, and it's Kyle. Jade is a little jealous that he's called her. Kate asks Jade not to tell Kyle or Sonya what happened last night; she doesn't want them thinking badly of her.
KATE: I mean, it's fine for you, but people don't really expect that from me.
Ouch.
Ramsay Street
Paul pulls into his drive, just as Karl arrives home. Karl approaches Paul, and asks whether or not all the work he's got Susan doing is really necessary. Paul, of course, has no idea what Karl's talking about, nor about the time off. He denies cancelling the annual leave.
PAUL: Karl, I have absolutely no idea what you're talking about. Susan can take a trip whenever she wants. Why Peru, anyway?
KARL: It's somewhere we've always wanted to go.
PAUL: She can have the holiday. I'll actually look forward to the peace and quiet.
Karl is left shocked, and glares towards his house.
Number 28
Susan's on the laptop as Karl walks in, and he immediately confronts her. Paul says she can take leave for as long as she wants, whenever she wants.
SUSAN: I can't.
KARL: Why not?
SUSAN: Because of Jim.
KARL: Jim is not your problem!
SUSAN: Oh, Jim is dying! He has no- one!
KARL: Well why lie to me? What is going on here?
SUSAN: What?! What exactly are you accusing me of?!
KARL: I just don't get why you wouldn't tell me the truth!
SUSAN: I didn't tell you because I knew you wouldn't understand.
KARL: Well that is great, isn't it. Is that how much faith you have in me? Do you even want to go to Peru?
SUSAN: Of course I want to go to Peru, but right now Jim needs me here! I WON'T abandon him.
Karl walks towards the bedroom, rips the Peru map off the wall (rather ineffectually) and throws it on the table next to his wife. Karl walks away and Susan stares at the map in horror, realising the impact her words have just had...
