Waratah Heights
Sirens can be heard from up above and Elle reassures Josh that the paramedics are on their way.
Up above Lucas and Toadie have also arrived and Lucas tells the paramedics that Elle is also down there. The rescue team get to work. Down below Elle calls out to let the team know where they are and tries to get Josh to stay awake by asking him why he wanted to be a journalist. He wanted to get to the truth. Well doesn't everyone in Erinsborough? The paramedics arrive but Elle refuses to leave.
Charlie's
Libby, Susan and Karl are getting excited about Susan's first (ever) ultrasound. Karl wants to know if they're going to find out the sex of the baby but Libby says that although she'd like to Dan isn't keen. He wants the surprise. Libby thought it would be a chance for them to bond and get more involved, but she hasn't told him that. Dan comes over, he hasn't been able to get through to Lucas so maybe he should get over there. Everyone is like, "er, and miss the ultrasound so you can feel involved in the pregnancy?!" Karl smoothes things over by saying that Lucas will call if there is any news on Elle. Libby decides to choose the wrong moment to put forward her idea of bonding through knowing if they're having a boy or a girl although for some reason she says it's Susan's idea. Dan doesn't want to have this conversation now and thinks they should get to the hospital. Urgh, he's turning into a disinterested polar bear type of father. Someone get him on Jeremy Kyle!
Waratah Heights
While the paramedics get the stretcher ready Elle jokes that they can argue over whose by-line is going to go on the story. Josh tells her to tell his wife he loves her. Elle tells him to tell her himself, they'll be out soon. Josh is unresponsive and the paramedics start to administer CPR. Why don't they have any oxygen with them?
On ground level Lucas and Paul are getting concerned about what is going on down there. Just then the rescue team emerge with Elle. Josh hasn't made it. Probably because the paramedics were shockingly ill-equipped. Just then a police car rocks up and Josh's wife steps out. Elle goes to break the news.
Hospital
The Kennedy Fitzgeralds are sitting in stony silence. Steph spots them and reminds us all that she's on the council then promptly puts her foot in it by asking if they're going to find out the sex of the baby.
DAN: We're not finding out, Steph.
STEPH: I thought you wanted to know.
LIBBY: Oh we're not having that conversation right now.
SUSAN: It's worth discussing.
Steph senses the AWKWARD and offers to get coffees and Karl steers Susan away to give Libby and Dan some space. Dan reminds Libby that they made their decision and she agrees but thinks it would be nice to be able to decorate the nursery, tell Ben about it, pick a name. If only she hadn't said that Karl and Susan agree!
DAN: Let them pick it!
Elsewhere Karl is trying to stop Susan steaming in like a freight train full of hormones.
SUSAN: A freight train?
KARL: Well obviously not a freight train...
SUSAN: What kind of train?
KARL: Susan, you can be very co....you can be a little forceful at times.
And the look on Susan's face is well worth a screencap!
Back in the waiting room Dan is explaining that as this is the only biological child he's going to have he thought she understood that he wanted the surprise. He wants to know why the sudden change of mind. She blurts out that it's not sudden, she's spoken to her parents about it.
LIBBY: I just wanted to know what they think and they think it's a good idea.
DAN: But I don't.
LIBBY: Well that's fine. We can all discuss it.
DAN: No we cannot all discuss it Lib. This baby is ours and your parents don't get an equal say. And I don't want to debate everything. I'm so sick of it.
Dan goes to get a coffee and after the break Steph and Susan have rejoined Libby and are talking about having the choice to find out or not. In a shocking display of incontinuity (if such things are shocking these days) Steph says that if she had her time over she'd definitely find out as it just makes things so much more organised. She and Susan also agree that the surprise is really good too. Susan says that it is important that Libby and Dan make their own decision. Libby says they're definitely waiting - Dan has his heart set on it. Susan "casually" suggests that she could talk to him. (I feel like alarm bells should be ringing and lights flashing.)
LIBBY: I don't think so.
SUSAN: Oh come on. I can talk to people without railroading them you know.
LIBBY: Yeah, yeah I know I just don't want to make any more of an issue out of it. I've made my decision and I'm fine with it.
Karl joins them with the news that Lucas has just brought Elle in. They set off to find Dan who is sitting with his new bff, Paul. Paul says that she should be fine physically and explains that Josh died and she was there. Elle is discharged to get some rest, not that she thinks she could sleep. She blames herself for not getting any more help to Josh quicker. Dan offers to drive them home (again with the "Er and miss the ultrasound?!" Kennedy faces.) but it's ok, Paul has his car. As they leave Lucas also puts his foot in it.
LUCAS: Don't forget to tell me if I've got a niece or a nephew!
Karl regales Susan and Libby with a hilarious anecdote (about a baby in a bath, a Christmas card photo and a stark naked woman) while the grim reaper stands at the door. Karl and Libby go to find out what is taking so long leaving Susan and Dan alone. Susan apologises for interfering before and wonders whether Dan could reconsider as Libby has been so understanding of his concerns (well, she hasn't really).
DAN: Susan, this is none of your business. Libby and I are the parents, we will make the decision.
SUSAN: I'm just saying, there's room for compromise.
DAN: I've done nothing but compromise. Not one aspect of this pregnancy has been the way that I wanted it.
SUSAN: Including me being surrogate?
Thankfully Karl and Libby come back before it gets any nastier and Dr Olenski follows shortly after to take them in for the ultrasound.
Even Dan manages to smile at the sight of his baby on the ultrasound screen, in fact he might be welling up. Dr Olenski says that she can confirm the sex of the baby if they want to know and Susan says it's up to Libby and Dan, they're the parents. Libby says they've decided to wait, but Dan has a change of heart.
DAN: Nah, let's do it.
LIBBY: You sure?
DAN: If you still want to.
LIBBY: Are you absolutely sure.
DAN: There's be enough excitement on the day, what d'ya reckon?
DR OLENSKI: Congratulations. You're having a boy.
Everyone is all happy and huggily. Nice.
Number 22
Elle can't sleep. She cuddles into Lucas and tells him that she keeps seeing Josh's face. Lucas reiterates that there's nothing she could have done, but she thinks that's the worst part. They hold hands and Elle passes Lucas the memory stick. She tells him it's Josh's story that he won't finish because he had to chase her down a rabbit hole.
LUCAS: Maybe you need to finish it.
ELLE: No, I'm not half the journalist he was.
Lucas isn't convinced she can just leave it and gently coaxes into writing it. She begins her story about decisions and quickly gets into full flow. Paul comes downstairs just as she finishes writing and is interested to see what sort of angle she's taken on the story. She says she hasn't taken any angle, just told the story from beginning to end. He asks if he can have a read and Elle lets him.
PAUL: He knew he was dying didn't he? When he asked you to tell his wife.
Paul thinks that Elle must have been of great comfort to Josh and gives his daughter a big hug before going back to bed. Elle joins Lucas on the couch again and eventually falls asleep.
In the morning Paul comes down to find Lucas reading the story and Elle still asleep. Lucas thinks the story is great, Paul agrees, it's one damn fine piece of journalism. Lucas wonders if Paul is going to print it, but Paul thinks it is too good for the Erinsborough News.
LUCAS: You reckon she should be in New York.
PAUL: (Drinking from his "I Like Me" mug) What do you think?
After the break, Elle has woken up and Lucas praises her story. She thinks she might try and sell it to the broadsheets. She goes to take a shower and Lucas calls up the commissioning editor of the New York News.
