Recap
Paul tells Elle he's made an appointment with Dr. Young, his new psychiatrist.
Izzy receives her latest test results and is in shock.
Cam tells Elle to go get a doctor as he's getting worse.
Cam's hospital room
As Cam's pain levels increases, Elle calls for help, then runs out into the corridor in search of a doctor.
Psychiatrist's office
Paul wants to keep his mobile phone switched on during the session but the doctor tells him it's non-negotiable, he needs to switch it off.
Cam's hospital room
Elle comes back in, grabbing her phone to call Paul, clearly ignoring the restrictions for mobile phone usage in a hospital (especially in the ICU where the phone may mess up the functioning of the machines that are keeping her brother alive).
Psychiatrist's office
Paul switches his phone off.
Cam's hospital room
Elle gives up as she can't get through to Paul. Cam is still hurting badly so Elle calls for help again. Carmella then appears at the door. Maybe then they include medical training when you join the sisterhood these days, why else would she come in when they need doctors to stop someone from dying?
Psychiatrist's office
Paul is talking to the doctor about his life.
PAUL: The thing is, I've been a sod for most of my life. You see, I look at a situation from what I can get out of it. But that's all about to change.
DR.YOUNG.: Why?
PAUL: Why? Because I made a deal with my son and I intend to keep it.
Cam's hospital room
Carmella tells Cam that she's there and when he tries to speak to her she shushes him as he's clearly in a lot of pain.
Psychiatrist's office
DR YOUNG: Are you really doing this for your son? To fulfil what you see as an obligation? And if that's the case, then no therapy in the world is going to work.
Paul looks like he's taking in what she has just said.
Cam's hospital room
Cam tells Carmella that he wants her to look after Elle and she says she will. He makes her promise that she'll be like a guardian angel and she says she will do everything that she can. It seems Elle has then finally found a doctor (I guess Carmella's medical training wasn't all that good after all) who walks up to check the machines monitoring heartbeat and breating which are frantically beeping away by now.
Psychiatrist's office
PAUL: The thing is, I almost lost my son who I love so much it scares me. Now if I'm here today because of him, is that such a bad thing? The point is, I do want to change. I *really* do want to change. Because it's killing me being the way I am.
Cam's hospital room
The doctors and nurses come back with a mobile bed to collect Cam.
Psychiatrist's office
DR YOUNG: Tell me about your time in prison.
PAUL: Piece of cake, really! Bed, clothed, no bills to pay, plenty of companionship, not a care in the world, really...
DR YOUNG: No?
PAUL: Now what do you think, doctor?
DR YOUNG: I think it would be helpful if you shared how it really made you feel. What you think it did to you.
And the dramatic music builds up as we switch back to the hospital again...
Cam's hospital room
The doctor asks Elle and Carmella to wait outside as the medics get Cam ready to take him away.
Psychiatrist's office
The dramatic music is still playing loudly in the background as we return for the next part of the 'Sessions with the Rogerian therapist in the semi-darkness with what looks like Lassiters when you look out the window'.
PAUL: I came out of there a different person.
DR YOUNG: In what way?
PAUL: Infinitely worse. You see, before I went into prison I was a good guy with a bad side. But when I came out, I was a good guy with maybe a shred of good left.
DR YOUNG: Perhaps your time in prison left you unable to form normal bonds with other people.
PAUL: And you're saying what? That everybody around me, my friends, family, lovers are all out to get me?
DR YOUNG: Is that really how you felt?
Paul has a flashback to Cam saying 'I've got nothing left for you, Dad' from last week.
PAUL: He had broken me. But I couldn't show that because he would have seen it. And all the while, I was surrounding myself with other broken people, they were loving me, suffocating me, like...
Paul has a flashback to kissing Izzy in the hospital last week and her pulling away from him.
DR YOUNG: Like...?
PAUL: ...Like Izzy.
Hospital corridor
Elle leaves a message on Paul's phone saying she's at the hospital. She wants him to call him as soon as he hears the message since Cam's not doing too well. Conveniently there's a sign right behind her saying that mobile phones are prohibited in the hospital too, but maybe being a Robinson gives you special privileges, or something so she could still use her mobile...
Lyn enters and Elle asks her if she's seen Paul, Lyn says she hasn't. Lynnie wants to know how Cam's doing and Elle tells her that he's going in for emergency surgery. They decide that Lyn can be useful by trying to get hold of Paul so after a quick smile at the news that Paul's finally gone to see a mental health professional, Lyn heads off to track him down, leaving Elle and Carmella behind. Um, what about calling your good friend Gail too, Lynnie? From what we've seen Gail doesn't even know that her son is nearly dying and you'd think she'd like to know about it!
The nurses wheel Cam out from his room to take him to the OR right past Elle and Carmella so that they can exchange a few words.
CAM: It's always been us against the world, hey, Porky? Take care of Dad, ey?
Elle can't manage to form a reply so just watches him being taken away.
Number 24
Harry's back home again after his trip to visit TheWickedWitchOfTheWest™ aka. Svetlanka in Perth. (Um, when did he even leave for Perth? I must have missed this.) Sky's trying to convince him that Lou could be suffering from Alzheimer's, but Harry won't believe it- Lou's still got all his wits about him! Sky pulls out the age argument, Harry and Lou aren't as young as they used to be despite what they might think! Harold refuses to believe it, especially now that he's so refreshed after his holiday. Lou's simply suffering form a broken heart after Mishka rejected him, and now he's in denial so he's choosing to forget things, that's all. Sky's not convinced that Mishka would do that, and Harry simply says that Lou's never been lucky in love. Sky ensures him that this time it's more than just that though, she's really worried about Lou and so is Karl and Janelle. Harry says he'll talk to him, but he won't believe that Lou could be facing Alzheimer's until he sees it with his own eyes.
Harry tells Sky not to worry and asks how she's going. Sky ensures that the fills the episode quota for StomachRubbing™ while they talk about some DVDs by this Japanese anime artist called Miyazaki whose birthday it is today. The name Miyazaki doesn't exactly ring a bell with Harry though.
HARRY: ?
Sky tells him that they should watch some of Miyazaki's films later as she's sure her Granddad will love watching them. There's a knock on the door and it turns out to be Dylan who's now returned from cooking camp with a new hairdo and Harry's really excited about Dyl being back in town. (Apparently they also have hairdressers at these cooking camps these days, I just hope they make sure that no hairs accidentally end up in the food!)
DYLAN: Wow, you're full of bants (?) for someone's who's caught the red eye from Perth!
Harry's eager to know how the cooking course went and Dylan tells him it was good. Hmm, I wonder what Svetty did to Harry over there in WA, maybe it's those hair massages she used to give him that's given him all this energy!
Anyway, so Dyl's not come over to see Sky all empty-handed, oh no, he's even brought her a gift! It's a big soft toy which apparently is one of the chracters from Miyazaki's films. Apparently Dylan has an amazing memory for anything and everything Sky-related so he just knew today was Miyazaki's birthday. Wow, I wish I had a memory like that! Dyl reckons this koala-like toy could be the first one they give to the baby.
Number 32
Izzy's in the lounge going through old photos of her and Max at the beach as Max brings her and Steph some coffee. Izzy turns it down, excusing herself by claiming she had one before but she forgot to tell Max. Steph's asks Iz if she's feeling alright and she says she's just a little tired, that's all. Somehow she's still up for a shift down at the bar though, oh, and by the way, she has to leave right now before the questions get too probing! Steph suggests that maybe Max could do Izzy's shift for her and he says that's not a problem at all, in fact he's happy to do it. Upon leaving Max reaches down to kiss Charlie (who's sitting in Steph's lap) but all she gets is a 'Goodbye, sweetheart' before he heads for the door. Is it just me or does it suddenly feel cold in here? Clearly, Stax still haven't resolved their issues regarding Katya. Izzy's also picked up on it and points it out to Steph who just shrugs it off.
IZZY: Anything to avoid each other, huh?
STEPH: Don't be silly.
IZZY: Not very convincing, Steph.
STEPH: We're okay.
IZZY: No, you're not. You're pretending that everything's fine, but quite clearly it's a horrible mess. You're my family, I want you guys to be happy before I leave town.
STEPH: (shocked) What? Before you leave town? Wha'?
IZZY: Yeah, it's time to move on, I think.
STEPH: Really move on, or just say you're moving on so people chase you and move on.
IZZY: Fair enough. but if people chase me this time, which I doubt, I'm... I'm not coming back.
STEPH: When are you going to go?
IZZY: A couple of weeks...?
STEPH: Wow.
Steph tells Izzy she wants her to stay in town even though they've had their ups and downs in the past. Izzy starts laughing at the thought of the number of times that Steph's thrown her out, what is it now, two or three times? Steph says no one would be counting anyway so what does it matter. Um, I think you're forgetting the Stax and Izzy fans, Steph, I'm sure they remember and keep track of all the details! LOL
Number 24
Harold asks Sky and Dylan what's so special about this toy that Dylan brought, what's wrong with a good old-fashioned teddy bear? Nothing apparently, it's just that this koala-like toy is very special though as first of all it's a bit more 'cluey' than buying a normal teddy bear and secondly it helps restore faith in humanity.
HAROLD: (pointing to the toy) What, that's supposed to be human?
SKY: No, he's the spirit of the forest.
HAROLD: Arr, I give up.
Just as he's about to leave Harry remembers that Dylan's just come back from his cooking course and wants some development on the not very informative description of it that Dylan gave him before. Dyl says the course was good because he learnt a lot of new techniques plus he's also got a heap of new recipes now which will be good when he's cooking for Elle. Sky asks if he's been to see Elle since he got back home, but he says he hasn't yet, he wanted to hand over the present to Sky first. It turns out that Dylan hasn't heard about Cam being in the hospital yet and he doesn't seem too keen to go over there to support Elle, but Sky insists that he goes, Elle needs him.
Ramsay Street outside number 32
Izzy's standing outside number 32 waiting for Steph when Paul comes over to her. He tells her that the way he behaved at the hospital (last week) is unforgivable. I'm sure a lot of Pizzy™ shippers would agree with you there, Paul! He says he hasn't been himself lately so that's why he behaved the way he did, or rather, he has been more of a brute than usual. Izzy looks as though she's not quite sure what to think about this.
PAUL: You know, after all that's happened, perhaps even because of it... I never stopped loving you. I never will.
IZZY: (half-smiling) Really? Why are you telling me now?
PAUL: 'Cause I'm trying to better myself...
IZZY: Yeah, I've heard that before.
PAUL: No, no, no, I mean it. You see today I had my first session with a therapist.
IZZY: (smiling) Paul, that's... that's really great.
PAUL: Yeah, I want to mend some bridges.
IZZY: So do I, so do I...
PAUL: But, we bring out the worst in each other. We tend to hurt the people around us.
Izzy looks almost numb, it's as if she was hoping for Paul to take her back, but he's just crushed all hopes of that ever happening.
PAUL: So we both know we're going to be far, far better people if we're apart.
IZZY: Yes, you're right, and that's one of the reasons why I'm leaving Erinsborough.
PAUL: (shocked) Really? I didn't realise you were going.
IZZY: I need a brand new start and I've had one too many of those in this place so it's just time to move on.
PAUL: I guess this is goodbye then.
The 'I know I get it wrong sometimes and ice-cream I scream' song from episode 4546 when Susan found Tom praying in church starts playing and Paul and Izzy move in for one last kiss...
Then the hearts of all the Pizzy™ shippers are broken in an instant and the Plyn shippers Elise and I, start cheering when Lyn shows up in one of Lassiters's snazzy grey cars, interrupting what could have been the last opportunity for a Pizzy™ kiss ever if Izzy leaves town soon. Lyn pulls over to tell Paul that he needs to come with her to the hospital to see Cam and he gets in the car. After a quick manoeuvre around the cul-de-sac (in a fashion we haven't seen Lyn act since the RamboLyn™ sequence when she saved Izzy and Charlie from the leaking gas in episode 4952! ) she and Paul take off to the hospital leaving a distraught Izzy behind.
Scarlet Bar
Sky and Harry have made it to the bar and Sky's still carrying that soft toy that Dylan gave her. Oh well, I guess that will keep her from rubbing her stomach 24/7 if nothing else! Harry orders some Tazzle raspberry cordial, apparently it's very special as it fills him with energy! He learnt how to drink it when he was over in Perth with Svetty. Max and Sky seem a bit sceptical as to the magic of the Tazzle.
Izzy enters with Steph in tow and both Max and Steph look a bit uncomfortable as they realise that Izzy's set them up for a meeting without them knowing about it.
IZZY: Max Hoyland, have you met Stephie Hoyland? Same name, fancy that, what a coincidence. Maybe you should buy the lady a drink and get to know each other?
Izzy offers to take over from Max at the bar so that Stax can go home and have a nice quiet dinner together and work through their problems which they agree to do.
Cam's hospital room
Paul, Elle and Lyn are waiting around for news regarding Cam's operation. Elle's getting impatient as it's taking so long for the doctors to give them any news, but Paul assures her that Cam will make it through, he just knows it.
Hospital corridor
Carmella's sat waiting outside Cam's room when Dylan shows up, asking how Cam's doing. He's still in theatre though, so no news. Cam's destiny is in God's hands now.
Cam's hospital room
Cam's doctor comes into the room with a sad look on her face and before she has the chance to say anything, Paul realises what that look means- Cam didn't make it through the operation alive. Paul and Elle start to cry.
Cam's hospital room
Paul is pacing back and forth going on and on about different things relating to the funeral arrangements. He talks to himself about whether Cam had a will drawn up or not, and how he wants to take Cam back to Tasmania, and that they need to post a notice in the paper... Only when Elle tells him to stop, he does and Lyn tells him that there's plenty of time to make arrangements later. Right now though Paul can go and see Cameron if he wants to, Paul doesn't reply, he just pulls Elle into a hug and holds her as tight as he can as he breaks down crying.
Scarlet Bar
Harry orders another Tazzle from Izzy hoping to have another shot of cordial before Sky returns from the toilet, but she's too quick, so ha! Busted! Sky suggests that Harry's become addicted to the Tazzle, but he insists it's only cordial so how could he possibly get addicted?
SKY: We all know how people get hyper off it.
IZZY: You'll be dancing on the bar before the end of the night.
SKY: Yeah, you could sell some tickets, Izzy. Pump up the music.
IZZY: (to Harry) Yeah, you'd look pretty cute in a pair of flares!
Harry's not amused by the girls' teasing, but Sky insists that they're not laughing at him, but with him! Besides, it's not every day that Sky and Izzy share a laugh anyway, as Sky correctly points out.
Dylan enters with a grave expression on his face as he tells the others about Cam dying. Sky asks him how Elle's doing and Dylan says it was weird and that he didn't know what to say to her. Sky tells him to go and try again as his place right now is to be with Elle to support her.
Number 32
Max has just served up dinner in the living room (since the kitchen at no. 32 seems to have gone AWOL) when Steph emerges from the bedroom after checking up on Charlie. Dinner's gone a bit cold, but Steph doesn't want Max to reheat the meal, it's fine as it is and looks delicious! After an awkward silence they both start speaking at the same time and decide that Steph will go first as Max's part will take longer.
STEPH: The last two weeks have been... really difficult for me.
MAX: I know.
STEPH: It's not your fault, Max. I've been really hard on you and just let everything build up, and up, and up until I'm just so angry... It's really stupid.
MAX: No, look Steph, the whole thing was stupid. Really, why would someone like Katya want me?
STEPH: Are you attracted to her?
MAX: No!
STEPH: ??
MAX: Well, she was fantasising about me, I was just dreaming about playing for Collingwood. I didn't find out about it until we got back!
STEPH: (getting annoyed) And then you're flattered, huh?
MAX: Well, of course I am, I'm only human! Yeah, alright, I should have told you, but... I don't know, she was still so fragile and I kind of felt responsible...
Steph can't believe what she's hearing.
MAX: ...I didn't want anyone to judge her.
STEPH: Well, hello, what about me? I've been feeling pretty fragile myself!
MAX: I know that, Steph, I know! But nothing was ever going to happen with me and Katya. Seriously, it was just never going to happen, Steph! I'm not going to be unfaithful to you ever, I love you! Look, the big mistake that I made was assuming that you knew that, but I love you, Steph.
Just as Steph is trying to take all of this in Izzy comes barging in with a serious look on her face...
Hospital corridor
Lyn is sat talking to Carmella and tells her she's really worried about Paul who's still somewhere in the hospital seeing Cam. Carmella says she reckons Paul has got a lot to say to Cam so that's why he's taking so long. Being the expert analyst and mind reader that you become after taking one introductory psychology course at university, Lyn says that Paul always pretends that he's coping when he's not really doing so. Ooh, her insight into his soul is amazing, it's not as if people who have no training is psychology could work that out as well! Anyway, Lyn says she'll stick by Paul even after Cam's death. (insert major 'Aww's from the Plyn shippers Elise and I here) Carmella tells Lyn about how she promised Cam to look after Elle. Hmm, I wonder if this means that they'll be good mates now? They did stand on the little bridge down by the Lassiters lake the other week holding hands, maybe that was a sign of things to come?
Dylan appears wanting to see Elle. She's now sitting in Cam's old hospital room all by herself. When he enters the room she's surprised to find that he's come back and he says that Sky told him to go back to the hospital. Elle says that Sky shouldn't have done that. Dylan asks if Elle's been to see Cam yet, but she says she hasn't, it's all so unreal that she can't take it all in.
DYLAN: If you like I'll come with you.
ELLE: Dylan, I'm not sick. I made it up.
DYLAN: Why?
ELLE: To keep you. Just go back to Sky, that's where you belong.
Elle asks him to leave her alone as she's got things to do then pats the pillow on the bed next to her, the pillow that Cam's head once rested on.
Number 32
Max is starting to freak out now as he's realising that he will now be held responsible for Cam's death. He's pacing back and forth asking himself why he had to do what he did and how will be able to live with this? Izzy tells him it's not his fault, it was an accident! When Izzy can't calm Max down, Steph has a go at calming him down, but it has the opposite effect. Max pushes her away and screams at her instead.
MAX: STEPH, I WAS DRIVING THE CAR!!! I made a choice, it's my fault!
Clearly, they must all have forgotten about poor Charlie now then, he must have woken up from the screaming yet no crying is heard from the bedroom. Hmm.
Ramsay Street, the next day
A hearse is parked outside of no. 22 as Paul, Elle and Carmella walk down the driveway with packed suitcases, closely watched by Max who's standing outside his house across the road. Paul looks at the coffin inside the car with a blank look on his face. Elle tells him that everything is ready and that Gail phoned (it's about time she was mentioned!), she's not happy that Elle and Paul are coming to visit.
PAUL: He's my son too. I will take him home and I will be at his funeral. It's my right, so she can just go to hell.
Carmella reminds him of his promise to Cam that he'd stop being angry and full of hate. Paul looks over at Max and meets his eyes.
PAUL: I made that promise to a living son, not a dead one.
