Valda's Hospital Room
Lou has given Valda a book called 'Learning to say Mother'. It's about a woman who finds out that her aunty is actually her mother. "Oh, Carpenter. You're about as subtle as a sledgehammer." Lou says she should tell Lyn, and Valda tries to change the subject. Lou tells her about the country and western theme at the pub, and Valda is mortified. "That's been done to death!" Lou says the place hasn't been the same without her, and he hopes that she'll be back soon.
The Scullys
Lyn is looking at the photo of the baby that Valda left behind. Joe walks in the kitchen and says that he's made the nursery up for Valda to stay in for the time being. He's worried about apologizing to her, and Lyn says it'll just get harder as time wears on. Joe asks her if she's going to ask Valda about the photo. She looks unsure.
The Coffee Shop
Ruby and Harold are setting up to open in the kitchen. Harold asks Ruby if she wants to go to an investment seminar with him that afternoon. She looks a bit wary, and says maybe not. But, she says that he could go by himself, and hands him $10 to "invest". He laughs, but she tells him that she wants to give him $10 every week for 12 weeks until she repays him for the statue. "Ruby, that was a gift." But she insists. Ruby wants to prove she can be self-sufficient. Harold looks a bit downcast.
Number 30
The walls are stripped of all the posters. Toadie and Dee are surveying their work so far. Dee says it's rewarding, but Toadie reckons it's like a piece of history has gone. "Most of those were Lance's!" They banter good-naturedly. Dee starts to make coffee, and wipes paint on her forehead causing Toadie to crack up. They start to reminisce about their relationship gone wrong. Dee says, "I kept secrets from you because it was my way of staying in control. It's the only way I've known how to live my life." The phone rings and Toadie answers. It's Tim Collins saying when Toadie's meeting time is with Darcy. Dee feels bad that Darcy is in trouble, and wishes that she could have supported him like he did with her.
Court house/Jail
Toadie walks over to Darcy at the table. He says that Darcy's case may be better than he thought, and rattles off all the legalities. Darcy asks why Toadie is doing this for him. Toadie doesn't understand. Darcy wants Toadie to go and get Dee, and for the both of them to come back so he can speak with them together. He is escorted away, leaving Toadie sitting there confused.
Valda's Hospital Room
Valda is reading the book Lou gave her, when Joe and Lyn come in. She hides it next to her. Joe shows her the flowers that he bought her, and apologizes for what he said to her. Valda accepts. Joe goes out to the nurses station to get a vase. Lyn wants Valda to tell her the truth why she left so suddenly. Valda just says that Joe and Lyn needed space and time alone. Lyn brings out the photo, and asks Valda who it is. "Well it's you pet. I thought you could tell."
The Coffee Shop
Ruby gets off the phone, and tells Harold that she has a job interview at Grease Monkey's. Harold gets concerned that Ruby doesn't like working at the Coffee Shop anymore. Ruby says, "I'd like to earn a job on my own merits." He tries to be happy for her, but looks uncertain when she walks out.
Valda's Hospital Room
Valda tells Lyn stories about when Lyn was a baby. "You know, when you were born you looked like a little skinned rabbit. So fragile." Valda says how much trouble she was when she was a baby because she wouldn't feed properly. She tells Lyn she was loved so much. Lyn says, "Sometimes I feel like I had the best two parents on earth." Valda covers up the book beside her. Lyn says she feels just like her mum these days, all flighty. Valda looks sad.
The Coffee Shop
Harold is on the phone to Moe, the owner of Grease Monkeys. He's ringing up to give Ruby some good references.
Court house/Jail
Dee walks in with Toadie, and they sit down at the table. Dee's worried that Darcy is going to yell at her. Darcy walks out and greets them. Dee starts to apologise, but Darcy cuts in. He says that he loves Dee, and that he finally realises what he lost when he betrayed Dee with Tess.
DARCY: "I put every ounce of energy into winning you back.
DEE: "You broke into the Kennedys because you loved me?"
DARCY: "No. I broke up your relationship with Toadie.
Dee and Toadie look at each other in disbelief.
Court house/Jail
Dee asks how Darcy knew about Darren, and he says the marriage certificate. "I knew the effect it would have on you two, I just took advantage of it." Dee is getting more angry and upset by the minute. Toadie asks if he had anything to do with Sindi. "You were an easy target Toadie. And Sindi needed the money." Toadie is incredulous. "You paid her?!" Dee asks why, and Darcy says, "I saw what I wanted, and I went for it." Dee looks disgusted, and storms out. Darcy watches her go and whispers after her, "Goodbye Dee." Toadie looks at him pitifully, gets up, gathers his jacket and briefcase, and leaves. Darcy sits alone at the table.
Number 30
Dee and Toadie are in the kitchen, and Dee is really angry and hurt. Toadie is surprisingly calm. "Aren't you even angry, Toadie?" "Yeah, at myself." Dee says that Darcy was responsible for their break-up. Toadie says that Darcy played a major part, but ultimately it was down to them. Toadie asks Dee if she knows why he's called Toadfish. Dee says about Stonefish, Gemfish, "It's a family thing." He asks Dee if she's ever seen one. "They're small, puffy, ugly spotted things. And that's what I was at school." Dee sighs, "Well you were never that to me." Toadie says he was just waiting for the inevitable to happen, because it was just too good to be true. He thought he never deserved Dee in the first place, and just took Darcy's bait. Dee holds out her hand to him, and he takes it. "From now on, you'll only be Jarrod to me." They look at each other, a fresh chapter emerging.
Erinsborough Hospital
Lyn and Joe walk out of Valda's room. Lou sees Lyn looking happy, and goes into Valda's room saying how courageous she is. Valda didn't tell Lyn though, and wants Lou to take the book back. Valda says that she's fantasized about telling Lyn for ages, but she realises that it's been for her own selfish reasons. She can't bring herself to tell Lyn because Lyn would have to accept that her whole childhood was a lie.
The Coffee Shop
Lou tells Harold that Valda should be out of hospital in a couple of days. Ruby storms in and wants a word with Harold in the kitchen. Lou looks amused. Ruby wants to know why Harold gave the owner a reference. She tells him she got the job but, "because you spoke to him, I'll never know if I got the job on my own merits or not." She's angry, and Harold says he only wanted to help. Ruby says he needs to stop doing things for her. She starts to do the dishes, and Harold looks at her sadly.
Jail cell
Darcy sits on his bed, a broken and lonely man. Doors are shut tight around him, bolts are drawn, and a lock is placed over the door.
