Surgery
Sarah says she understand that Karl is hurting and would do anything to stop that. Karl says there's nothing she can do. She says that Karl said he cared about her - things can't have changed. Karl says that they have - at the time the "outside" part of him was talking, not the inside part. He tells Sarah that the outside part of him isn't there anymore because Susan made that part exist - without Susan, that part of him doesn't exist. In fact he's not any person at all - Susan was what made him real.

Outside Lassiters
Sarah walks across and Harold tries to make smalltalk with her. Sarah brushes him off.

Kennedys
Susan is cleaning and comes across an old photo of Karl and looks stricken. Joel comes in so she quickly replaces the photo. She tells Joel that he's walked into a bit of situation. He asks if there's anything he can do.
He tells Susan that his parents split up for a while - they worked it out but it took six months of them both crying. Susan sits him down and asks to tell her about it. Joel asks if she hasn't got more cleaning to do, but Susan says if she uses any more antiseptic, the house will blow up(!)
Joel says things were pretty bad - he was only nine and heard them fighting all the time. His mother didn't explain it to him so he imagined reasons instead. Susan is listening in rapt attention. Joel says that his parents patched it up and it could happen for Susan too. Susan looks doubtful.
Joel asks Susan again if there's anything he can do. She suddenly says that there is something and leads him off to her room.

The Coffee Shop
Madge is putting Beef Casserole on the Specials board much to Harold's displeasure - the Coffee Shop has vegetarian leanings(!) Madge is off to the police station to put in a claim for the money. Also she'll call into the warehouse and get some more coffee. Harold tells Madge he's a bit confused about Sarah - she was acting oddly earlier. Harold is waiting for Anne to come in - he's helping her with a school project.

Ramsay Street
Susan and Joel are carrying her bed out into the street. Susan says when you're clearing up a mess you should make a proper job of it(!)

The Coffee Shop
Anne comes in. Harold points an old man sitting at one of the tables to her. Anne is confused - her project is about "Realities of the Destitute." Harold says that the old man is the perfect subject but Anne doesn't want to embarrass him. Harold says that it will be fine - he's asked the gentleman in advance.
Harold introduces Anne to Fred. They sit down together to chat. Fred asks if he can have some more beef casserole!

Ramsay Street
Joel is finishing bringing out Susan's bed. Hannah comes up. She asks Joel if he knows anything about mould - she's thrown out some mould that Lance was keeping. Joel suggests that she asks Harold. Hannah asks Joel what he's going to do about the Kennedys - she's heard what happened. She says if he needs a time out he can come to her place - she'll even cook him dinner. He says that a break would be a good thing so agrees. This knocks Hannah off-balance momentarily but she quickly recovers and invites him round for 7.30pm tonight.

The Coffee Shop
Madge has been to the police station and they say that it looks like she has a very strong claim to the money. Harold tells Madge that Anne is interviewing Fred from the hostel.
Anne tells Fred that he doesn't seem very depressed or unhappy. He says it's been a rough life but there's no good crying over spilt milk at his age.
Anne comes up to Harold at the hatch and says Fred isn't really what she's looking for - he's happy with his life and keeps singing the praises of the Salvos. Harold suggests that Anne asks Fred about his past life which he assures her is quite dramatic. Anne is a bit embarrassed to ask him about his past, but Madge and Harold encourage her.

Kennedys
Susan is walking around the house looking devastated. The phone rings and the answerphone kicks in with Karl's outgoing message. She is distracted by a knock at the door and is pleased to see Ken. Then she hears Karl talking into the answerphone - he wants to work things out and begs her to talk to him. Susan erases the message.
Susan's old friend picks up on her tone and asks her what's happened.

Surgery
Karl is loitering around his office distractedly. He has forgotten to call a patient in.

The Coffee Shop
Anne is quizzing Fred about his past and he is answering her questions amiably. He tells her how he used to gamble and how his wife left him - he never saw her again. Gambling and booze ruined him. He says he'd like to see his wife again to make amends, but it's too late now.
In the kitchen, Madge and Harold are observing Anne interviewing Fred and comment that it seems to be going rather well.

Kennedys
Susan is ranting to her friend that she can't believe that it had been going on for six months and she never noticed! She says now looking back there were signs and her friend listens patiently. Susan is very intense and asks Ken about Sarah. He says he has a few questions, but she never let on to him. Susan rants that she can see trouble coming across the schoolground yet she doesn't see it in her own husband. She gets a bit crazy and tells Ken that she wants to blow up the house(!) Then she apologises for her crazy talk. Ken suggests that they go out for lunch. Susan says she's not very good company, but Ken says he doesn't need her to entertain him. She agrees, but first they need to go shopping for a new bed!

The Coffee Shop
Hannah raves to her friend Zoe that Joel is coming to dinner tonight - Phil is still away so they'll have the house to themselves!
Anne tells Fred that she wishes there was something she could do for him in return for the interview. She invites him back to the Wilkinson house for dinner.
Anne checks with Hannah if she's going to be home tonight because she wants to bring Fred home. Hannah lies that Zoe is going to stay over at her house so she'll stay there.
Harold asks how things are going with Fred and Anne says that Fred is appreciative - she's really appreciative.
Hannah and Zoe start to talk about recipes.

The Pub
Susan is enjoying Ken's company and smiling. Unfortunately Karl comes in and her smile fades.

Martins
Zoe is talking about recipes while Hannah panics about clothes.

The Pub
Karl asks Ken to excuse himself. Ken says he won't unless Susan wants to speak to Karl. Susan tells Ken that it's alright and he withdraws to the pool table.
Karl sits down. Susan is coldly furious and tells Karl it's not the time or the place. Karl says she can't just cut him out of her life. She tells him angrily that she doesn't want to talk to him - she's not ready to talk. Karl says he did a stupid thing but that he loves her. Susan tells him angrily that it's not fair of him to play that card. Karl asks Susan to have dinner with him to discuss things but Susan tells him in no uncertain terms that she doesn't want to. Karl gets up and leaves. Susan shakes with emotion.

Kennedys
Susan is still feeling a bit shaky - she feels like she's in freefall, everything is different and she doesn't know what's going to happen to her. Ken says things will get better.
Joel comes in and asks Susan if she wants to borrow his blow-up bed, but she says she's been shopping for a new bed. He goes off to Hannah's.
Susan says that Joel has been really sweet to her. She says it's easier to talk to Joel or Ken that to her own kids. Ken says that today is really painful, but she has to think of tomorrow and the big picture. Whatever happens, the pain will fade. He says what it comes down to is - does she want Karl back in her life. Susan says that at this moment, she doesn't.

Wilkinsons
Fred asks Anne why she's interested in him. She says Harold chose him, but she's glad. Fred says once you've let out your past problems they seem to weigh less heavily. Anne goes to pop the oven on and says she'll be back in a few minutes. Fred sits on the sofa and strokes Bonnie.

Martins
Zoe is helping Hannah to do her hair. While she is spraying hairspray, Hannah smells something burning and realises she's ruined the sauce. Hannah panics but Zoe tells her to get takeaway and pretend it was hers. She says there's a gourmet takeaway in the mall and you can get amazing things there. They run off to the takeaway.

Wilkinsons
Anne comes back from the kitchen to find Fred apparently asleep. She looks a bit closer, anxiously calling his name. Then she touches his hand and realises he has died.
