LOU: Danni said what?!
CHERYL: That it was disgusting I'd even think about having this baby, especially if there's going to be problems. "Retard" is the word she used.
LOU: Why, that little...! And after what she said yesterday. I ought to...
CHERYL:(crying a bit) I already have, I even slapped her face.
LOU: Good.
CHERYL: It's the first time I've hit her.
LOU: Sweetheart, don't get upset, she deserved that.
CHERYL:(crying) I know she did, but I still feel rotten. Oh, Lou. I have to make up my mind, should I have this test or shouldn't I?
LOU: Well, whatever you decide is OK by me, you know that.
Newsagency

Lou sees Danni, just off to school.
LOU: Just a minute, Danni.
DANNI:(sullenly) What?
LOU: You overstepped the mark with your mother this morning.
DANNI: She asked for my opinion and she got it!
LOU: From what I hear, you were downright cruel!
DANNI: I don't care! I don't think you should be having a baby at her age! Any kind of baby! Anyway, what right do you have to talk to me like this? You may have got my mother pregnant, but you're not my father!
LOU: No, and I'm damn glad of that.
He opens the door.
LOU: I wouldn't claim a kid as selfish as you!
He slams the door behind her.
Pub
Mark is at his interview for the pageant. As he talks to the panel, Danni rushes up to him in tears asking to talk. He says he'd better take her to the Coffee Shop and is just walking off with her when the panel ask what's going on. Mark says that he'll have to leave the interview now.

BRETT: She'll come round, Mum. Just give her time, you know that.

PAM: So...it wasn't menopause with you after all.
CHERYL: No.
PAM: I see.
CHERYL: Well, you never know, Pam, if you keep up the practise...!
PAM: Oh, no, no, no way! I've done my share!
They laugh. Cheryl asks Pam for advice as a nurse - what does she think about the amniocentesis and the risk of miscarriage.
PAM: Well...there's a slight risk, yes. But you ought to find out. I mean, it'll help you decide if you want to terminate.
CHERYL: Oh, Pam, I'm not sure that I could, even if...well. What would you do.
PAM: As a friend or nurse?
CHERYL: Either...both.
PAM: Well, I suppose what you've got to consider is, whats going to happen twenty years down the track if there is a problem?
CHERYL: When I'm no longer around, you mean?
PAM: Or, when you're too old to cope. I know that sounds harsh...
CHERYL: It doesn't. That's the difficulty, trying to think that far ahead. But then, on the other hand, there mightn't be any problem at all.
PAM: That's right.
School
Brett catches up with Danni.
BRETT: I want to talk to you.
DANNI: You don't have to break my arm.
BRETT: I'd rather break your neck, the way you spoke to mum about the baby!
DANNI: Well...maybe I went a bit too far.
BRETT: A bit?! Danni, you told her to get rid of it!
DANNI: Well, she's got the choice, and if it's not going to be perfect...
BRETT: Then she'll love it anyway! Just like she loves you! And you're not perfect, are you?
DANNI: Excuse me, diabetes isn't...
BRETT: Think about it, Danni.

DANNI: Hi mum.
CHERYL:(coldly) Hi.
DANNI: Tidying up?
CHERYL: Well, someone's got to.
DANNI: Mum...
CHERYL: Yeah?
DANNI: I'm sorry for what I said about the baby. I didn't mean it. It was an awful thing to say.
CHERYL: Come here.
She hugs her.
DANNI: I just get so messed up sometimes.
CHERYL: I know.
DANNI: I didn't mean it, Mum. I didn't mean it.
CHERYL: I know.
DANNI: I feel so bad now. I don't know how you can bear it.
CHERYL: It's alright.
DANNI: I'm sorry.
CHERYL: It's alright!
Danni sobs.

No.24
Cheryl is talking to Lou, Brett and Danni around the kitchen table.
CHERYL: I just want to say that I have given this a lot of thought. It would be very difficult for the family if this baby was seriously disadvantaged.
LOU: Cheryl...
CHERYL: Let me finish, Lou.
BRETT: Go on, mum.
CHERYL: If I were ten years younger, then maybe I'd think different about it. But I'm not, well, neither of us are, Lou. And I don't think that I could bring someone into the world knowing that eventually, someone else would have to care for it. And what if important to me...is what I have here right now, with all of you.
DANNI: Mum...
CHERYL: No, no, I know, I know, I don't, darling. But I've made my decision and I've decided to have the test. And if the results aren't good, then I'll do what I have to do. (To Lou, through tears) It's the right thing, and you know it is.
Lou kiss her hand.
CHERYL:(getting up) But...that's a big "if" and I don't want us to be moping around a feeling miserable. What I want is for us to go out to the Waterhole and see the end of the Quest.
They all heads off.
